Setting up your Sega Dreamcast Game System
If you have a keyboard for your Dreamcast unit, it is recommended that you use it while going through these setup instructions. The setup I have found to work is to have the regular controller plugged into the first port and the keyboard plugged into
the second.
Setup Layout
When the Dreamcast is running, if you hit the start button, you will see a 9-option cluster that resembles this layout:
| Search | Mail | Favorites |
| Back | Home | Forward |
| Addresses | Stop | Options |
Setup Walkthrough
If you press the start button and choose options (bottom right corner), you will see a menu with two required settings (Internet Connection and Email Account) and one optional setting (Display Settings).
- To start, click Internet Connection and hit the A Button to select it. A three-panel menu will then come up.
- The first panel is Basic Info. You will see the following fields:
- Name: This should be your name, as you want it to appear on outgoing messages.
- User Login: This is the account you have with your provider. It's usually the first part of your email address.
- Password: You should have received this when you started your account. It will show up as stars on the screen.
- Dialup Number: The first section is for the area code, the second is for the number. Click here to view FrogNet's dialup numbers.
- Backup Number: Only fill this out if your provider gives you a backup number.
- DNS 1: Enter up to three numbers in each of the four sections. For FrogNet, the DNS is 204.192.96.20
- DNS 2: Enter up to three numbers here, if your provider has two DNS servers. For FrogNet, this number is 204.192.96.18
- At the top of the screen, click "Dial Options". You will see the following options:
- Area Code You're Dialing From: Enter your area code here.
- Long Distance Call Prefix: For most areas, this is just the number 1, unless you have to enter a calling card number.
- Call Waiting Prefix: If you have call waiting, your phone company should give you a prefix to dial (usually *70) to shut call waiting off for the duration of the call.
- Outside Dial Prefix: If you need to dial a number to access an outside line, enter it here.
- Dial: Select either tone or pulse, depending on which your phone line can use.
- Dial Area Code: Only choose yes if you know you're dialing a long distance number to get connected.
- Blind Dial: Choosing on will show the modem communications as it dials in. Choosing off will hide the terminal window.
- At the top, choose proxy setting. You will see three fields:
- Use Proxy: If your provider uses a proxy server, choose yes. (FrogNet does not currently use a proxy, so choose "no")
- Proxy Server Name: This would be the name of the proxy server. Since FrogNet does not use one, leave this space blank.
- Proxy Port: This is the proxy port. Again, FrogNet does not use this, so leave this line blank.
- When you've entered all of this information, hit the OK sign and press A to return to the options menu.
- The next area to configure is Email Account. Choose it and hit the A button to adjust the settings.
You'll now see a one-panel display with five fields and two other options.
- Email Login: This would be your login name (the first part of your email address).
- Email Password: This would be your password. If you don't enter it, the system should ask for your password each time you check for mail.
- Email Address: This would be your full email address.
- Incoming Server (POP3): This is your incoming mail server. For FrogNet, use pop.frognet.net (all small letters).
- Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): This is your outgoing mail server. For FrogNet, use smtp.frognet.net (all small letters).
- Show email header when getting mail: Check this if you want to see the email header information in the message body.
- Include original message in replies: Check this to include the original message when you reply to it. It is recommended that this is checked.
- When you've entered all this, choose OK and click the A button to save the settings.
- Choose Display Setting, and click A to adjust the settings. (These are optional settings)
Here, you'll see six different options.
- Show Screen Saver: It is recommended that you choose yes for this.
- Hide On-screen Keyboard: If you have purchased a keyboard for the unit, you can choose yes to hide the keyboard that appears on the screen.
- Sticky Keys: If you answer yes, the shift key will stay on while using the keyboard (click it again to turn it off).
- Anchors Underlined: It is recommended that you choose yes here. This will underline all links on web pages.
- Play Sound Effects: This is for sounds as you click things in the menus.
- Show Verbose Modem Messages: Choosing yes will give more detailed modem messages.
- When you've entered all of this information, choose OK and hit the A button to return to the options menu.
- At this time, you are finished. Choose SAVE and click the A button to save these settings. You should now be able to get connected and browse the Internet (or play some games online!).
