Jordan: OU Women's Studies student intern Spring 2006
I am currently interning at SuBAMUH as part of a
women*s studies course I am taking at Ohio University.
Initially, we were given a list of options from which
to choose our desired internship. After reading
SuBAMUH*s description, I felt as though it was the one
for me. I was familiar with the idea of intentional
community and had even briefly lived in a communal
setting before. I thought that SuBAMUH would give me
the opportunity to experience the dynamics of a
women*s only community and spend some time outdoors.
As a student, I have found it necessary to live within
the city limits. Therefore, my internship at SuBAMUH
provides me with the chance to escape the chaos of
town and embrace the outdoors. As I drove out 550 to
Hooper Ridge the first day, and enjoyed the green
rolling hills, I knew I had made the right decision.
As I pulled up to SuBAMUH, I thought to myself, *I*m
going to love it here.* And I do. The 151 beautiful
forested acres, with a swimming pond, garden, and
multiple hiking trails is enough to make anyone fall
in love with SuBAMUH. The women that I have worked and
talked with at SuBAMUH are all wonderful and have
added their own unique element to the internship. I
have already gained so much from the experience.
During my time at SuBAMUH, I have learned how to cut
down an invasive tree with a hand-saw and an ax, use a
chainsaw, drive a small tractor, use a tiller, and
identify a few native plants. In addition, my
spirituality has also been nurtured through the
avenues of planting vegetables and conversing about
Buddhism. Initially, I imagined my internship
consisting of learning job skills that would be
applicable to the non-profit sector, such as
grant-writing or computer proficiency. Although my
internship is much different than I expected, the life
skills I have learned and the memories I have made at
SuBAMUH are irreplaceable and I am very thankful for
the experience.
