Stories are an integral part of our lives. Maybe you choose to read your stories or perhaps you view them in the local movie theatre or throw in a favorite videotape/DVD or just watch the TV.  Here is a look at some of our favorite stories and the people who create them.

Books and Authors

Sonja is an avid reader and spends as much time as possible with books. Unfortunately life has other plans and she doesn't get nearly as much time to read as she would like. However, when that rare moment does come along she is either reading anew or re-reading a favorite novel.

Science Fiction

Robert A. Heinlein -- I own nearly every book and story that he wrote. My favorite is "Number of the Beast" but then again, I love "A Princess of Mars"!

The Bujold Nexus -- This is the homepage for Lois McMaster Bujold. Her work is not to be missed. Whether you are a fan of science fiction, romance, mystery, military or adventure, you will find this and more. She is in my opinion one of the best science fiction writers out there today. Her characters are fabulous, the plots great. She tells a wonderful story. She can be serious or humorous. To me, if I actually chuckle during a book, it is quite the compliment. It hardly ever happens. So what if I tell you that not only did I chuckle during a read of her latest Miles novel, A Civil Campaign, but laughed uproariously for over twenty pages, tears streaming down my cheeks? And on subsequent rereads it is the same! She has a rare gift and you are only denying yourself by not checking her books out.

There is quite the division in the fan ranks if you should read her works in the chronological order of the series OR if you should read them in the order that she wrote. But don't worry about this -- just read them! And how about this interesting interview done by The Romance Reader?

Edgar Rice Burroughs - He is most well-known as the creator of Tarzan, but for great pulp science fiction, you can't beat the "Mars" books! I cut my teeth on these and love them as an old reread! Try the ERB World site complete with biography. Or how about trying one of his novels? Twenty of them are available for reading on-line for FREE! Go to The On-Line Literature Library. This link takes you straight to the ERB page.

Fantasy

The Unofficial David Eddings Homepage - I own everything this guy has written - in hardback! What else can I say? My favorites? The twelve book series which includes the five book Belgariad set, the five book Mallorean set and, of course, the Belgarath and Polgara books. If you are a really hard core fan, then you will also want The Rivan Codex, which explains the background of that series. You can go check out some reviews on his books at Science Fiction and Fantasy World or you can even try The Mallorean Tavern.

Mystery

The Judge Dee Books by Robert VanGulick are really fascinating! Based on true crimes and older mystery stories in China, the Judge Dee books give the reader a fascinating look at China from 630AD-700AD. Van Gulick did his own book illustrations. You can see some here.

Can't have this list without the Grande Dame of Mystery, Agatha Christie. Visit her official homepage. For me, she remains one of the best mystery writers of all time. David Suchet's portrayal of Hercule Poirot, in the British Poirot series, is not to be missed.

Shopping for Books

While I think that it is important to support local businesses, I have found that shopping for books on-line can be quite fun. It can be especially useful when you are looking for that strange and usual author or title. If I do shop on-line, I usually go to Amazon Books which boasts over a million titles on-line. Also, Baen Books lists their new titles along with sample chapters.

Stories on the Stage

    Lights! Curtain! Action!

Sonja, along with her cohort, Kizzi Elmore-Clark, are the drama advisors for the Federal Hocking Theatre Club. This spring, be on the lookout for an abridged version of A Midsummer's Night Dream. Our past productions have included, The Importance of Being Earnest, The Gazebo, You Can't Take It With You, and Harvey. We have an established chapter of The International Thespian Society - a theatre honor society. Keep a lookout for new FHHS Theatre pages coming soon.

 Stories from the Silver Screen

Harold and Maude - This is a great movie and one of our favorites. We have seen it at least...oh, 20 times or more. Pretty soon we will have to get a new copy of the movie because we are wearing ours out. I could summarize the plot, but then again, why do that when there is already a wonderful web site available?

The Spinal Tap Fan Page - "Tap Into America!!" What can I say except that I have watched this movie over 40 times. I know that it is kind of sick to watch the same thing over and over, but in this case it's a good kind of sick If you have no clue who Spinal Tap is, then I say..."GET THEE TO THIS WEB PAGE ANON!" You can also visit The Spinal Tap Homepage.

South Park, The Movie - Now, I really love musicals. So, when they took a great cartoon and made it into a movie, musical extravaganza, what isn't there to like?

Singin' in the Rain - I just love Gene Kelly, so I guess any movie by him would do. However, the songs from this film are so much fun. The entire movie is just plain fun. And what's wrong with that?

Stories from Television Land

South Park -  Those lovable scamps! What can I say except, "hahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!" You'd have to see it to understand! My favorite episodes have to be the ones with the great music.

Babylon Five - All Hail, Owners of TNT for saving this wonderful show! I was a hard-core trek fan, and I must admit that I watched the beginning of Bab5 without really being hooked. Then the syndicates messed with the program's schedule - enough to kill just about any show - and we lost track of it. But one day...towards the end of the second season, or was it the beginning of the third...well, anyway, we ran across it again and got totally hooked. We despaired of ever seeing those missing episodes and were even more upset to hear that it had been cancelled at the end of four seasons...and it had been planned as a five season show! TNT picked it up,  made a prequel movie, along with the creation of the fifth season! If you missed this through its earlier trials and tribulations, don't worry. The SciFi channel is running it every night!

Bewitched and Elizabeth Montgomery Site - You know, we tried once to do a Bewitched answering maching message, and we just couldn't do it justice. Ah well, maybe someday. You probably don't need any introduction to this site, but let me tell you - IT IS AMAZING!

The Official SciFi Channel Farscape Site - An original series created by the SciFi channel, Farscape is another wonderful show! It is the story of an astronaut who is sent through a wormhole while testing an experimental craft. He gets picked up by a ship full of escaped prisoners and the fun begins. Very cool! You can also try The Official UK Farscape Site too.

Andromeda - Not to be eclipsed by Gene Roddenberry's earlier Star Trek universe, Andromeda is the brand new series based on one of Roddenberry's visionary television ideas. Gene's widow, Majel Barrett (Nurse Chapel, Lwaxanna Troi), is the executive producer of this great new show and stars Kevin Sorbo (of Hercules' fame) as the Andromeda's captain who has been caught in the temporal disruption of a blackhole. He is "rescued" 300 years later, to find the vast civilization of the Commonwealth gone. He is a single man determined to rebuild that vision.

Poirot - Agatha Christie's prime detective brought to life by superb actor David Suchet. Such great fun. It can currently found somewhere on the A&E channel.

Sherlock Holmes - Many Sherlocks have been tried, but I favor Jeremy Brett's portrayal. As with Poirot, you can find it somewhere on the A&E channel.

BBC in America

These shows are just too much fun. If you are lucky enough to get the BBC in America Direct TV station, then you are missing out if you don't try these. When I get time, I will finish writing the description. In the meantime, go directly to the BBCA website.

Hamish MacBeth - Kind of like a Scottish version of Northern Exposure, only with a much darker tint.

Changing Rooms - Watch as neighbors redecorate a room in each others' houses. And they don't have any say what is happening in their own! There is a new US version of this program which really sucks.

Ground Force - The Ground Force team, Alan, Charlie, Tommy and Will, come in and make over a garden in just two days. It is a surprise to the owner.

Jonathan Creek - Mystery with a twist. Jonathan solves mysteries of seemingly supernatural origin. Of course, they aren't.

The Official Doctor Who Website - I started watching Dr. Who 13 years ago. I didn't realize how lucky I was that I actually started watching with Doctor #1. It was campy and silly and the special effects...well, AWFUL! But it was a great show and we watched it faithfully every week. We became so enamored of it we started taping it. However, the evil summer and high humidity of Southeast Ohio took it's toll. Imagine our dispair to find that many of our old tapes were destroyed by mildew and mold. We also gave up supporting Public TV, because the year we called in to pledge to support Dr. Who, they took it off the air! SHAME ON THEM! We want our Dr. Who back!!!!! So where do I go now for my Dr. Who fix?? The BBC in America, of course!
