Let the music take
you where it will...to the plains of Africa... to the cold chill of Canada
...to the strains of the Middle East...go with the flow.....listen to
the music all around you....
Musicians and Groups
Mike
Oldfield - Long known for his "Tubular Bells," Mike Oldfield has an
amazing body of work - from movie scores to pop to "new age-ish" music.
My very first album, "Platinum" was lovingly brought back from a trip
to Europe. After its unfortunate demise (my college roommate did not understand
what happens to vinyl records when left in direct sunlight) it took another
year to find a place that could import it. It took only 7 long years to
finally get it in CD form. Of course, I have since collected a number
of his other works - and thoroughly enjoy them!
Deep
Forest - A group from France that uses instruments, drums and voices
from all over the world to create a multicultural tapestry of sound. They
do this by MIXING different sounds together. In one song you have a Hungarian
singer with the chants of Buddhist monks with drums and voices from Africa.
If you listen closely, you can hear the heartbeat of the world. Here is
the Sony (France) Deep Forest
Website. It comes in both French and English.
Angelique
Kidjo - Angelique Kidjo has a powerful voice. Combine it with the
complex rhythms and harmonies of Africa and you have really something
special. Most of her songs are sung in her native language but there are
translations in the jacket. Her songs are very much about social conscious
and justice. Some of her albums use instruments and drumming recorded
in Benin.
The
Tea Party - This group from Canada combines Zepplin-esque rock with
the sounds of the Middle East. I think you have to hear them to appreciate
them!
Great
Big Sea - This band is from Newfoundland. What this group has been
able to do - successfully, I might add - is to take traditional songs
and make them modern and accesible to present day audiences. That they
are able to do it without compromising the original material is what makes
this band a "great".
Unfortunately, I never
was able to get their first three CD's here in the US - but don't worry,
just go to their web site and order directly! It may take a month, but
it is well worth the wait! They have recently had their first US release
called, Rant and Roar. I was able to order this locally - but you
can also order it through their webpage! Another interesting link:

Enya
- Whenever my students have to take a test, I play Enya as a soothing,
relaxing accompanyment. They even come into class asking that I play them.
That's a pretty big compliment right there.
Buying Music On-Line
I enjoy shopping on
the web and I found a really interesting place to buy music through the
net. The coolest thing about this site is that you can download and listen
to samples from the cds/tapes BEFORE you buy them. Just enter the realm
of World Wide Music!
I also found this
great site for buying records and CD's related to Theatre productions
and Movies! I ordered from them and found it to be really quick and painless!
Try Footlight Records.
Midi Sites for Web
Pages
The
USS. Andante - Ultimate Sci-Fi Midi Page is a really great place to
go to find midis from science fiction television shows and movies. This
is an excellent site!
The
Ultimate Midi Site is a great place to find midis of all types as
this page is nothing but links to pages with midi files. I can't believe
that you won't be able to find some cool music for your web pages!
