This family is heavily represented in the temperate zones, including eighteen species in eastern North America. It might be called the lady fern family, after the lady fern, Athyrium filix-femina. It includes both petrophilic and soil-dwelling specie s. Many have apparently delicate leaf tissue, with some dying down in hot, dry weather. Sori may be either slanted or round. The genus Athyrium was formerly included in the genus Asplenium.
