Dryopteris is a large genus represented in most of the climate zones of the world. Some members of the genus are even sub-arctic. Generally, Dryopteris species have rather substantial frond tissue, and round, peltate indusia over round sori.
Many Dryopteris species are highly desirable garden plants. Some of the favorites are D. erythrosa, D. marginalis, D. filix-mas and D. intermedia.
The chromosome counts of ALL Dryopteris species are based on n=41, which is probably a reduction from n=42.
