The royal fern is one of the most anciently recognized ferns. It is said that it was in a patch of royal fern that Osmund, who gave the genus its name, hid. The royal fern prefers to grow in open swamp conditions, often forming large fibrous hummocks from its roots, and even sometimes growing trunks up to about two feet high. It's easy to grow in the garden, as well.
