A Political World Gazetteer: Africa

by John Knouse

This is an outline of the world's political divisions, organized by 1) continent; 2) area of continent if relevant; 3) nation; 4) national subdivision (province, state, department); 5) further subdivisions if they exist.

AFRICA

Africa is the world's second-largest continent. However, every other continent but Australia has higher mountains. Africa features the world's largest waterfall and the world's largest desert. Most of Africa is either desert, savannah, or rainforest. There are currently a total of fifty-three nations in Africa and nearby islands, plus foreign possessions.

Africa is split by the Sahara into two very different areas, Mediterranean Africa north of the Sahara, andsub-Saharan Africa south of the Sahara. The northern area is generally Arabic and Islamic. The southern area is generally Negro, with a variety of religions and languages.
