About the state: Missouri is a midwestern state, bordered on the east by the Mississippi River,
while the Missouri River, which flows west-east through the middle of the state, forms the
northern half of the western boundary. North of the Missouri River, the state is principally
prairie converted to farmland with remnant woodlands and gently rolling hills. South of
the river, there are ancient igneous mountains to the east, prairie in the center and west,
and the hills of the Ozarks in the south. The state largely overlays thick strata of
limestone, with many caves and man-made lakes in the southern half.
