Part of
Quilt National 1999
Artists Name, hometown John w. Lefelhocz, Athens, Ohio
How and why have you chosen to express your creative energies in the medium of layered fabric?
The sculptural quality was inviting to me. I was also drawn to the challenge of using non standard materials as I have in previous works.
What part of the process of making a quilt gives you the greatest pleasure?
The very beginning and the very end of the process of making a quilt gives me the greatest pleasure. I enjoy the early planning stages when anything is possible. The real toil is making the possibilities into reality. Of course, I enjoy when you see the finished product, but I tend to nitpick my work and I need to have distance from the final outcome in order to truly enjoy it ( usually about a months time settles me down).
What do you consider to be your greatest challenge in working in this medium?
As with any medium for me the greatest challenge is overcoming self doubt
Approximately how long does it take you to create a work like the one in Quilt National 99?
This quilt, counting the planning, took about three months of my spare time to make .
Approximately how many hours a week do you devote to quilt making?
When I am not pushing a deadline, I will spend somewhere between five and ten hours per week . As a deadline gets closer, I will dedicate up to twenty to thirty hours a week to a project.
How long have you been making quilts?
I completed my first quilt in August of 1998.
How has your work changed during this time?
My quilts are less abstract in form than most of my other works. The quilts are not exactly about one particular thing, but they are about the feelings I associate with all the materials and subject matter. This is new to my work.
What led you to making art?
My mother left some markers out when I was little and I proceeded to draw on the furniture. I got in trouble. My mom still uses a dresser with some of my early work on it and I am still getting in trouble.
Do you now, or have you earlier, worked in another medium?
I have worked in metal, wood, cement, clay and other media in the form of sculpture. I have also drawn and painted traditionally and by using a computer. I am currently doing some experimentation with glass beads.
What is your goal in creating art?
My number one goal is to create what I want to create.
What is your studio like?
My house is my studio. I have worked on art in every room of my house. The space is adequate, the atmosphere is mostly nitrogen, and the noises are tolerable.
What other activities do you enjoy?
I enjoy riding my bicycle and
fooling friends into not believing me when I tell them something that is
true.
