Ellen von Unwerth, one of the world's most original and intimate fashion photographers,
pays homage to the most delectable women walking the earth right now. "Fraulein" features
over 1000 provocative photographs of icons such as Claudia Schiffer, Penelope Cruz,
Natalie Portman, Kate Moss, Vanessa Paradis, Britney Spears, Eva Mendes, Lindsay Lohan,
Dita von Teese, Adriana Lima, Carla Bruni, Eva Green and many many more. The images
combine beautifully crafted scenarios, high production values with a joyful spontaneity.
Von Unwerth's color and immaculate black and white photographs celebrate sex, femininity,
romance and the sheer joy of living the moment. And if that moment features a riding crop,
handcuffs, maybe a very flimsy negligee, or some black stockings and a brilliant smile,
then so much the better. Sometimes the subjects willingly flaunt and delight in their
intimate fantasies. Other times, it seems as if we are voyeurs who have stumbled into
these very private and guarded moments. The images were shot over the last 15 years and
many of them are unpublished. Sam Shahid, one of New York's top designers, who
collaborated with von Unwerth on the book says "Fraulein" is 'like a very entertaining
movie that hits you in all kinds of ways'. Like all great movies, it requires repeated
viewing.

Before turning to the camera, Ellen von Unwerth was a model. The background
lends well to her chosen subject, beautiful women (being one herself) and
Fräulein is testament to an unquestionable skill set. 15 years of
work are collected in the book, some of the images previously unpublished,
and feature a veritable who's who of super models. Complementing the imagery
is an essay from Ingred Sischy, Contributing Editor for Vanity Fair.

Von Unwerth, Unearthed
Ellen von Unwerth doesn't pick and choose. She loves all women. "There are many
who are my favorites, from Claudia Schiffer to Eva Herzigova to Elizabeth Hurley
to Lindsay Lohan," said von Unwerth last night at Sloane Square's Michael Hoppen
Gallery during a private viewing of Fräulein, a collection of her rarely seen or
published photographs. Von Unwerth continued, "They are all fun and they give a
lot."
That was evident in the sexy, girly photographs of von Unwerth's array of
beautiful subjects, all in various stages of undress with lots of lingerie, toys,
and even the odd vegetable thrown in. There was Claudia with big hair in her
underwear--an image eventually used for a Guess campaign; Kate Moss making
horn-rimmed glasses sexy; and Monica Bellucci in nipple tassels. In "What
recession?" news, several prints of Heidi, Kitzbuhel, the photographer's racy
take on the Alpine Miss in red stockings and garters, as well as Nadja Auermann
in a mask, have all but sold out.
It was von Unwerth's friend Ingrid Sischy who prodded her to dust off these
favorite images for a new book to be released in December by Taschen. Sischy,
of course, authored the coffee-table tome. Last night's event was a cheeky sneak
preview. "The book has been in the planning for three years," said the Teutonic
blonde, standing amid a crowd that included Suzy Menkes, Serena Rees, and Nick
Rhodes. She continued, flashing that famous grin, "The title Fraulein came to mind,
and I thought it was great to do a kind of retrospective with this theme, my
favorite subject, women."
Despite the London-centric nature of the art world, von Unwerth told us that she
plans to spend more time in New York. As for upcoming projects, the photographer
coyly hinted, "Maybe something in the film direction." Although, as she left us
staring up at a picture of Moss holding a cucumber, we had to wonder what kind
of films she was talking about.

Who better to capture the carnal beauty of some of the most stunning
women around than Ellen von Unwerth? She has been one of the world's
premier fashion photographers for many years and Taschen is publishing
a collection of her photographs. A former model, before stepping
behind the lens, she worked in front of it for 10 years and it shows
in the sensuality she elicits from her own subjects. Her photos have
been featured in the editorial pages of Vogue, Interview
and Vanity Fair and she has been hired to create many
advertising campaigns for some of the biggest names in fashion from
Chanel to Guess and Victoria's Secret. Her work has also been shown
in numerous exhibitions internationally including at MoMA in Queens.
This collector's edition features sexy photographs of Claudia Schiffer,
Kate Moss, Eva Mendes, Lindsay Lohan, and too many more to list. The
images are in both black and white as well as color and present a very
different impression of women as sensual beings than the stereotypical
"men's" magazine. While the photographs often feature their subjects
nude or in lingerie the women are never objectified but rather seem to
be expressing some aspect of their own femininity. Many images are
previously unpublished and have been part of the photographer's
personal archive for the past 15 years.
The limited edition series of 1,500 numbered and signed copies is a 482
page hardcover book in a clam shell box and retails for $700. Taschen
will also be releasing 100 Art Editions which include one of two silver
gelatin photographic prints by Ellen von Unwerth and will retail for
$1,800 each.
