Why it Pays to Recycle...

In 2000, 8,454,921 pounds, or 4,227.46 tons, of recyclable materials were collected. These materials generated $335,406.33 in revenue.

Had these materials gone to the landfill......

They would have cost $120,482.61 to dispose of (at the going rate of $28.50 per ton), and
They would have taken up 12,682.38 cubic yards of space, (figured at three cubic yards per ton).
The 2000 net financial benefit was $455,888.94.

In 1999, 8,359,429 pounds, or 4,179.72 tons of recyclable materials were collected. These materials generated $287,385.21 in revenue. These materials would have cost $119,122.02 to dispose of in our local landfill. This savings created a net financial benefit of $406,507.07.

In 1998, 8,317,918 pounds of recyclable materials were collected, and $251,679.28 in revenue was generated from the sale of these materials. These materials would have cost $118,530.33 to dispose of in our local landfill. This savings created a net financial benefit of $370,209.61.

In 1997, 8,300,350 pounds of recyclable materials were collected. Once marketed, these materials generated $271,777.50 in revenues. These materials would have cost $118,279.99 to dispose of in our local landfill. This savings created a net financial benefit of $390,057.49.

In 1996, 6,866,621 pounds of recyclable materials were collected which generated $179,989.59 in revenue. These materials would have cost $97,849.35 to dispose of in our local landfill. This savings created a net financial benefit of $277,838.85.

In 1995, 5,875,582 pounds were collected and they generated $360,051.89 in revenue. These materials would have cost $83,727.04 to dispose of in our local landfill. This savings created a net financial benefit of $443,778.93.

This is a total six-year diversion of 46,174,821 pounds.

Had, over the past six years, these materials gone to the landfill...

They would have cost $657,991.34 to dispose of,
They would have taken up 69,262.23 cubic yards of landfill space. This is equivalent to standing in front of a football field, seeing it filled from goal post to goal post and stacked 39.21 feet deep with trash.
The six-year net financial benefit is $2,344,280.89, all of which stayed in our district, provided jobs, and helped to create a self-sufficient nonprofit corporation which does not require any public funds to operate.
