As you all know, I no more own the characters in this continuation than I am Santa. They belong to Fran and her Husband etc, etc, (so don't sue me, all I can offer is a history book, a spanish book, an english book, and five cents)

[For those who don't remember, this is the episode where Nigel proposes, and if she accepts she has to be on the ferry by Midnight. She trips, hurts her ankle, and misses the boat. ]

Pain etched its way up Fran's ankle as she stood watching the boat that held a waiting Nigel. "Wait! Oh, ouch, wait!" She moaned as the boat went out of sight. With that boat went the hopes of being a Sheffield. Pain tugged at her heart, if she couldn't have Mr. Sheffield, couldn't she at least have had Nigel? Fran swiveled on her good ankle and limped her way to the street. She hailed a cab and collapsed into the backseat, allowing the cab driver to put away her travel case. "Where to, Ma'am?" the cabdriver asked. Fran gave the directions to her mother's apartment and watched the buildings speed by. Fran blinked away a tear, whether it was from heartache or her aching ankle, she wasn't sure. "Here you are, Ma'am."

"Thank you," she said, her voice heavy with pain and emotion. She got things and headed towards her parent's home. Fran knocked on the door. "Coming!" She heard her mother yell. But suddenly, Fran realized something, she couldn't quit, she couldn't live her life with her parents, she couldn't stay 29 forever. She quickly limped away with a sudden burst of energy and hailed another cab. Her place was not at her mother's home, but at the Sheffield masion, with Maggie, Brighton, and Gracie, and, yes, Mr. Sheffield. Even though she was sure that his work came before her and she doubted he even loved her, she loved him, and needed him. When the cab arrived at the mansion, she jumped (as well as her sprained ankle would allow) out of the cab and hopped on her good foot to the door. She let herself into the dark house. She slowly got herself to the couch, where she collapsed, propping her injured ankle on the couch.

At that moment an exhausted Mr. Sheffield came home. He hung up his coat and went into his office, some papers in his hand. When Max re-entered the living room, the papers were replace by a newly tear-stained letter from Ms. Fine. He stopped near Fran, his own tears stoppng him from seeing her lying there, sleeping. " Oh, God, why? Why did I have to be a bloody fool, and be too busy for the love of my life? Why did I have to lose another love? And to Nigel of all people!!" he blinked the tears out of his eyes and his heart skipped a beat with joy, there was Fran, she hadn't left him! "Thank you, God. Thank you for giving me a second chance to love." He said his voice heavy with feelings.

He scooped his sleeping love into his arms and brought her to her bed, laying her gently down. He slid off her boots and pulled the covers over her. He smoothed her hair and kissed her forehead. Suddenly, a thought came to him and he ran out of her room, down the stairs, out the door and hailed a cab.

The next morning, Maxwell was out of bed at dawn, still in the clothes he had worn the night before, and went back to Fran's room, where he gently woke Fran. She opended one sleepy eye, "Mr. Sheffield? Oy, did I over sleep? Where am I?", she asked groggily.

"You're in your room Ms. Fine, and no, you didn''t oversleep, I just has a question to ask you." Mr. Sheffield said, smiling at her.

"Eh, I don't know how Maggie got her hickie..." Miss Fine said, slowly wakening.

"No, Miss Fine. Somthing else." Max, pushed away the hickie comment, resolving to talk to Maggie when she woke up, later.

"Oy. What did I do?" she asked.

"You made me fall in love with you." he said, looking lovingly into her eyes.

"WHAT?!" She asked, pinching her arm, was she still sleeping? She rubbed her arm, apparently not.

"Ms. Fine, I want to end this game of cat and mouse, and ask you to give up your role as the nanny---"

"You're firing me?" she gasped.

"Hardly. Ms. Fine - Fran - Will you marry me?" Max asked as he pulled out the dimond ring he had bought in wild excitement just a few short hours ago.

Fran began to cry happy tears. "Yes! Yes! Oh, Mr.Sheffield, I love you so much and I'm so sorry about Nigel, I could never leave you. Never. Oh --" But before Fran could happily babble anymore Max swept her up in his arms and they shared their first engaged kiss.
