Bad Day

It was one of those days that everyone has but never wants to get. For Nanny Fine, nothing seemed to go right. This bad day began the moment when Maxwell Sheffield screamed for her from his office.

"Miss Fine!" he said, his face turning different shades of red, faster than C.C. could count.

"Oh this should be good," C.C. stated in her sly voice.

"Oh would you just shut-up!" Niles screamed at her.

Quietly, so only Niles could hear, "Afraid that your gossip friend going to be fired?"

Niles just stared at her. He stared at her until he heard the door to Maxwell’s office slowly open.

"Ah, yes, Mr. Sheffield?" Nanny Fine asked in a quiet tone.

"Do you know what you have done?" Maxwell raised his voice towards her.

Knowing that this wasn’t going to be pleasant, Fran figured that it would be best to get it over quickly. "No, Mr. Sheffield. I’m not sure what pain I have caused you now."

"You said that your cousin Toddy would create the costumes necessary for my latest production."

"Yes, I know I said this."

"Well I called the bloody chap and you want to know what he said to me?" his voice raising with each passing word.

"No, but you’re going to tell me anyways," feeling uncomfortable of where this conversation was going.

Trying to keep his blood pressure in check he said, "Miss Fine, he claims that he never got the request to do the clothing in the first place."

Suddenly, Fran was outraged. She knew that this production was important to him and wouldn’t let something that important be forgotten. "But, Mr. Sheffield…." she tried to begin but Mr. Sheffield cut her off.

"No buts about it, Miss Fine, you’re fired! I’m sick and tired of all the situations…" Mr. Sheffield started yelling at her. When she heard the words "You’re fired" she raced out of his office, tears in her eyes and ran up to her room slamming the door.

So upset, he screamed at the two on-lookers to leave his office immediately.

Knowing this would not be the greatest time to say some smart remark, C.C. and Niles left the room quietly and as quickly as possible.

Fran didn’t know exactly where to start. She wanted to scream her head off at him, but knew that would help the situation. All she knew was that she needed to get the heck out of this house before she killed some, mainly Mr. Sheffield. Not that she would ever go to that extreme, she loved the man too much to do any harm. But sometimes… UGH!!!

After a few minutes of starting this or that she made up her mind. She was going to march into his office and tell him what she thought of his little episode! "Yeah, that’s what I’ll do," she quietly told herself. "I need to tell him that I did tell my stupid cousin Toddy about the costumes. I wish there was a way to prove it to him. I guess he just sees failure in me. I’ll show him. I’ll tell him how lucky he was to have me around. Let’s see if he can deal with his three kids without me."

Fran marched down the stairs. She caught both Niles and C.C.’s attention. They just followed her with their eyes and watched her disappear into Maxwell’s office. After Fran went into Mr. Sheffield’s office, Niles and C.C. made a mad dash into the kitchen and clicked on the intercom to listen in on the conversation.

Max was facing the back wall when Miss Fine slammed the door to behind her to announce her arrival.

Quickly spinning his chair around, he yelled, "Miss Fine!"

"Don’t use that tone of voice, mister. I’m sick and tired of all the baloney that you have put me through. Its always my fault when something goes wrong – blaming me for every little mishap that happens with your plays, your business dealings, even with your children."

Mr. Sheffield didn’t know what to do. He was stunned by Miss Fine outrage. He thought that it was very unprofessional of her to act in the manner she was doing right now, which was yelling at him. "How dare she speak to me in this tone of voice," he thought to himself. He became lost in his own thoughts about her rudeness when suddenly she spun on her heals and walk out of his office door for what he felt would be the last time.

Niles and C.C. just stare at each other in horror. Niles was afraid that his best friend suddenly would disappear out of his, Mr. Sheffield and the children lives forever. C.C. knew she should be the happiest woman in the world, now that the threat of Miss Fine was gone, but something told her that this could be the doomsday for the production company. C.C. knew that under all that British stuffiness was a man in love with the nanny and she also knew that for him to ever concentrate on work again, she somehow had to get these two to reconcile.

Miss Fine didn’t know what next step to take. Should she pack? Should she just ask Niles to have her stuff shipped to her mother’s? The only thing she knew was that she couldn’t stay here. She had to leave the ever crushing walls of this house. Get away and have time to think and re-evaluate her life. Miss Fine ran quickly upstairs to her room to grab her purse. Knowing that he had to do something Mr. Sheffield walked out of the office to knock some sense into the woman. She began her descent and looked down. There was Mr. Sheffield waiting for her. She didn’t know what to do. Should she start screaming at him? Should she try and go down the back way and out the back door, running like a chicken. She breathed a deep, cleansing breath to regain her composure.

Calmly, Miss Fine said, "Excuse me Mr. Sheffield you’re in my way."

"You’re not going anywhere. There’s more to discuss!" he said in a firm voice.

"No, I have said my peace. I’m leaving and you can not stop me."

Mr. Sheffield thought for a moment to restrain her, prevent her from going, but what could he really do? She was a grown woman and could come and go as she pleases. He wished that he could take her by the shoulders and walk her to the couch and just show her what his heart feels for her, but he was English. Proper English gentleman don’t force their way on a woman, no matter how much in love they are.

"Yo, Mr. Sheffield," Fran snapped her fingers at him, coaxing him out of the trance, "I’m leaving. I don’t know where I’m going or where I’ll be tonight. You may think that I’m a total ditz, but I didn’t forget about your costumes."

After calmly saying her peace, she walked past Mr. Sheffield, ignoring the eyes of Niles and C.C. who had cautiously came out of the kitchen and out the door into a rainy April day in New York.
