The Boyfriend

C.C. looked in her bathroom mirror, starring at all the wrinkles that had started to develop on her face. “ How could I have gotten this old?” she thought to herself. How would she ever be able to get a man with her looks? Then her mind started to shift towards Niles. She knew that she had secretly liked him ever since she saw him for the first time many years ago, but because of his status she had always told herself that it wouldn’t be practical. But, lately she had been thinking more and more about him and was starting to realize if she really wanted him she had to act fast. Just then, C.C. thought of a brilliant plan.

“Hello, Hello!!!” she exclaimed as she walked into the Sheffield home with even more enthusiasm than she usually did. “Why are you so cheery, a flying house bypass your apartment?” Niles said as he put her coat in the closet. “Nope,” C.C. responded, “I’ve got a really hot date tonight!” “Well, that’s great C.C. but we’ve got to get to work! Those costume designers are not going to hire themselves!” Maxwell chimed in. “Alright but its going to be hard to concentrate with thoughts of Paul in my head.” C.C. said as she left the living room. As soon as she left the expression on Niles face changed. Very rarely did C.C. have a boyfriend but what was even more rare was the mood that she was in. “She’s never been this happy before.” Niles said silently to himself. “Guess she must really like this Paul.” And on that note Niles shuffled up the steps to sulk in his room.

That night C.C. could hardly sleep. Her plan had worked brilliantly! Not only was Niles jealous but he also a bit depressed. Every time that he made a crack at her that day it wasn’t as good as it usually was. C.C. had thrown him off his game. She let out an evil laugh as she drifted off to sleep.

During the course of the next few weeks C.C. continued to torture Niles with talk of “Paul” and what they did together, how attractive he was and how much she liked him. Although it wasn’t that obvious C.C. could tell that she was starting to ware Niles down. His comebacks were worse, he wasn’t eavesdropping as much, and he seemed deeply upset. It was heart wrenching for C.C. to see him like this but she had no choice. This was, at least in her mind, the only way she could bring the two of them together.

After a month of teasing Niles C.C. pulled the biggest prank she possibly could. “I’m engaged!” she screamed as she entered the Sheffield home. “What?” exclaimed everyone. “But C.C. you’ve only known the man for a month how could the two of you possibly be engaged?” said Max. “Well, he loves me, I love him, why wait!” “So, when’s the big day?” Fran asked being the yenta that she was. C.C. quickly blurted out a date. “May 15th”, she squealed. “That’s in two weeks!” shouted Niles. “Yes, we’ll we didn’t want to have a long engagement.” “Well, congratulations but we need to get to work.” Max said as he dragged C.C. off to his office.

The Wedding

Somehow C.C. was able to carry this charade out until May 15th. She went through all the required motions to keep this locking legitimate. She even hired two actors to play the roles of the priest and Paul. Of course the whole Sheffield family was invited, including Niles who looked more depressed than ever.

“Do I have to go in there sir?” Niles pleaded as the limo approached the church. “Yes, Niles you do.” Niles turned and gave Max a puppy dog pout. “C’mon man look I know you hate C. C. but she invited all of us to her wedding and the least we can do is support her.” “But sir…” “No ‘buts’ Niles you’re going to go to that wedding and your going to like it!” Niles reluctantly left the limo and walked into the church, fully knowing that the woman he loved was about to marry another man.

“How long are you planning on keeping this charade going?” asked the actor who was playing Paul. “Just until the guy I like starts to like me.” “And how long is that going to take?” “Don’t worry Mike you won’t have to pretend to be ‘Paul’ for very much longer. And besides, the longer it takes the more you get paid.”

Ten minutes before the wedding Niles didn’t think he could stand it any longer. “I’ll be right back”, he told Max. “But the wedding’s starting soon.” “I know. I’ll be brief.”

Without even giving a second thought, Niles burst into the bridal room. “Marry me!” he begged her. “What”, she said pretending to be shocked at his outburst. “Look, I know this comes as a bit of a shock, but I’m in love with you. I’ve been in love with you ever since I first saw you and have not been able to express my feelings for you until now. I know you really love Paul but I just can’t see you with anyone else but me.” “MIKE!” C.C. screamed. “You’re free to go, but before you do tell everyone there’s a new groom.” “You mean to tell me that this was all a setup!” Niles said slightly bewildered. C.C. nodded her head yes. “God, you’re amazing!”

And the lived happily ever after.
