It had been a long day and CC was very tired when she came home. She just wanted shower and go straight to bed. But she had to look through her mail and she had to eat. She had only bills in her mail and a few letters. She put away the mail except for this one letter. She didn't know what it was, but something was telling her that this letter was important. She sat down with her TV dinner and opened the letter. It had no return address on it so she wondered who it was from. It was written on an ordinary piece of paper. It read:
She looked at the envelope if it really was for her. But all it said was 'to Miss CC Babcock'. Not even an adress. She wondered if it was a joke. Maybe from that no good butler. When she tought about it she got sad. Because it looked like a love letter of some sort. And she wanted it to be a love letter. The last few weeks she had started to think about her life, and which direction it was heading. She came to the conclusion that it was empty. The past few years she had been satisfied with her business life. But as Maxwell grew closer to his kids and especially to their nanny, she grew more alone. She wanted to love someone, but the problem was that she never learned to love. She was thaught that love was unhandy. Being cold and heartless was better for business. This was true, but it wasn't who she really was. She wanted to love and be loved. But it seemed love wasn't made for her. She went to sleep.
The next day she got another letter. She paid extra attention to Niles to see if he was the one who sent her the letter, but their was nothing which made him suspicious. She opened the letter. It read:
If this wasn't a love letter, she didn't know what was. She loved it. But she couldn't stand not knowing who sent it. Then she got an idea. Maybe the doorman saw who delivered the letters. She asked it and he described the man. He was a little small and fat. He had grayish-red hair and started going bald. She knew someone who fitted in the description, but it couldn't be him, it couldn't be Niles. He hated her, he could not be the one who loved her. He probably did this as a joke. She was going to pay extra attention to him tomorrow.
She did notice something strange about him. He acted almost shy around her. She didn't let him know that she knew it was him, but she was almost sure. She was actually looking forward to the next letter. So when she didn't find a letter between her mail she was a little dissapointed. She sat down with her dinner when the doorbell rang. When she opened it she door there was nobody there. She looked down and saw a little package. She didn't bother to look around or go after the delivery person, because she did not want to know. Besides she was almost sure it was Niles. She opened the package and found an audio-cassette. She put it in her stereo and played it. It was a song sung by a male voice. The song was beautiful but the voice was wonderful. She wondered if Niles could have sung it. At the end there was a message for her. It said:
CC had tears in her eyes. Someone loved her. And it was Niles. It was his voice. Did she love him? She didn't know. She knew she was supposed to hate him. But she got tired of hating him. There was no room in her life for hate anymore. She loved the times when they accompanied each other to various events. And then there was this one time. The kiss. She often wondered what had happened if Maxwell and Nanny Fine hadn't interrupted. She didn't know. All she knew was that she felt like she was going on a first date.
When she started to look for Niles the next day, she couldn't find him. She asked Maxwell where he was but all he said was that Niles had taken a few days off and he left this morning. She actually felt a little disapointed. She left the house a little early, because she wanted to make sure she was on time. She looked through her mail and found anther letter. She quickly opened it. It said:
She loved Niles. She was sure of it. He was so sweet and romantic. After a while it was finally eight o'clock. She grabbed her coat and went down. She found the promissed limousine and she got in. It took her to central park. When it stopped someone opened the door. It was a man in a suit, clearly a servant. He took her to a table with candlelight near the water. There was another male figure standing nearby. The servant led her to her seat. The male figure came and sat down at the table. It was Niles.
"So it's you. You are the one who sent me those letters. Those beautiful letters. You are the one who loves me. And I'm the one who loves you. Yes that's right I love you."
"Well yes I love you. And I couldn't tell you right in your face. You wouldn't believe me. So I sent you those letters, and I sang you that song. You have no idea how hard it was. Thinking that you hated me. That you would never love a poor butler. Did you know that I've loved you for over five years? But I couldn't say it. I was afraid I would get hurt." He looked away. CC took his hands.
"When I realised it was you who sent all those letters, I started to think about my feelings for you. I've loved you all along, but I guess you didn't fit in this picture I had of the ideal man. I wasn't supposed to involve myself with the help. But I need you. And I don't care if you are the butler. I love you"
Two waiters came and served them dinner. They ate in silence. They didn't know how to act. They hated each other for so long, that they didn't know how to love each other. After dinner came a little orchestra which played lovely music.
"Would you join me in this dance?" Niles said while he stood and took her hand.
"Yes, I would." CC said while they started to dance. She felt so good in his arms. She didn't know how she could have lived without love. His love. After the dance he took her face in face in his hands.
"I've waited so long to do this." He said before he kissed her. If he knew it would be like this he would have done it a long time ago.
"What do you want do now?" She asked.
"Your are in charge."
"Let's go to the limousine." They went back to the limousine. CC whispered something to the driver and the limousine left.
"Where are we going?"
"Now I'm going to take you somewhere." She said with a michievous smile. They drove for a while and then the car stopped. They went outside and Niles found himself in front of CC's appartment. He looked questionibly in her eyes, but she just smiled and took him to her appartment. She wanted to prove to him how much she loved him. She wouldn't let go of love now she had found it.
The End
