Fran woke up feeling the pain she had growned used to since she had left the Sheffield’s home. She looked at herself in the mirror and aked herself once more ‘why?’. Why had she left the place? Ok, she did have her reasons but... Had it been the best option? She now had her own place, her own bussiness and her indipendance but... she would trade it all to be back home. She missed New York, her family her friends... she even missed the noise! Living in L.A. had been fun at first, even in the state she arrived in, the weather was perfect, the beaches were great and her clothes shop had been a success from the very begining... however she was starting to ask herself if it was worth it.
Back in New York, Maggie had married, Brighton was travelling through Europe, Gracie was about to enter college and Maxwell’s carrer was starting to take a new turn. He was about to go for sitcoms in L.A. None of them had heard from Fran since she’d gone, Niles had tried to find out were she was but her parents had stayed quiet, for a change... He and C.C had gotten married and were happy with the idea of moving into L.A., nevertheless, they all wished she was there to celebrate their happiness.
------ ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ------ ----- ----- ----- ----- -----
The Sheffields had moved to L.A. for over a month now and were getting ready to spend their first Christmas at the new house. Maggie had come with her husband to spend the holidays with them and Brighton had decided it was time to settle down and move back to his life, he would start college in L.A. and their father was happy to have them all together like in the old times... or almost.
Maggie and Gracie took off a day before Christmas to actually do some shopping, they had spent the entire day going from mall to mall and down every single shopping street in town when they got to a clothes shop which somehow reminded them both of some one.
"Maggie? Don’t you think this is the kind of clothed she would wear?"
"Yes... just looking at them takes me back in time..."
Their thoughts were interrupted by a unique laughter, they looked at each other. Could it be? They ran to the entrance and saw her. She was at the phone with her back towards them but they knew it was her.
"Do you think we could meet?... Perfect, I’ll make the arrangements...." the door bell arang anouncing new customers and she turned arround. She couldn’t believe what her eyes saw... "Mike... I’ll call you later... yes yes.... ok bye..."
"Hello Fran...."
"Hello girls...."
"Long time no se uh?"
"Yes, it’s been quite some time...."
Fran walked arround the front desk and walked towards them...
"So... you still have the habit of using your boss’ phone for private conversations...." they all laughed at Maggie’s joke and huged before the magic of the moment was gone, they had missed each other.
"Actually I’m the boss, so technically I’m using my own phone and that was not a private conversation it was bussiness..."
"You own this place?"
"Yeah..."
"Wow!"
"You like?"
"Sure its great..."
"What are you girls doing here anyway?"
"Dad lives here now, he’s gone into sitcom producing... Brighton has just moved back in after spendind several months in Europe and I have come to spend the holidays with the family..."
"You no longer live with your dad?"
"Well I got married and I..."
"Congratulations!"
"We would’ve called you but it was imposible..."
"Don’t hate me for dissapearing like I did..."
"We could never hate you... Maggie only wanted for you to know you would’ve been invited had she known how to get to you..."
"Yeah Fran... I think we make choises throughout our lives, some we regret and others we enjoy... you made your choise and we are happy to see you’ve done so well..."
" Thankyou girls...."
The three of them chatted for hours untill it was time for Fran to close. The girls stayed behind to help her and she offered to give them a lift home. She knew that meant she would probably be invited in and she really couldn’t tell wether she was looking forward to it or not.
"Here we are!"
"Fran... please come inside... Dad will love to see you... Brighton will hate us if you don’t and Niles and C.C. will be very sorry you didn’t..."
"Besides I’d really like you to meet Tom..."
"I.... I don’t know..."
"Please...." they both pleaded in unison.
"Ok..."
The girls opened the door to find a very worried group in the main hall. Maxwell was pacing the floor, Tom was watching his watch and Brighton was just sitting down looking blankly...
"Where have you been?"
"We were worried sick!"
"We are sorry guys but we ran into some one.... she brought us home and is waiting outside to see you all..."
"Some one? Who?" just then she came into the room.
"Hi.... sorry I kidnapped them for so long but... we had a lot to talk about..."
"FRAN!" Brighton ran towards her and huged her.
"Hi ‘B’..."
"Hi Mr. Sheffield...."
"My god... Fran..." he walked towards her and much to her surprise huged her. "Oh how I’ve missed you..."
"I’ve missed you guys too..." After getting their greetings done with and after she was introduced to Maggie’s husband she was asked to stay for dinner. She accepted and throughout the meal they shared their stories about their time apart and remembered old stories from their time in N.Y. Later they all excused themselves and left Fran and Max alone to talk. They sat in the terrace by the swimmingpooll.
"I think I owe you an appology..."
"No you don’t... you were right to leave... maybe the way you left was not the best way but at times like that I guess you just do things the way you can..."
"I still feel like I need to tell you why I left like I did..."
"Fran... I was coward. I played with your feelings and took you for granted... you waited longer than most would have done..."
"Yes, but I should have never left... I loved you so much...."
"You don’t now?"
"Now it’s different..." She stood up and walked towards the pool looking away from him, "Now... It’s been so long Max! I’ve got my own place, my shop... I can’t say I love you... I don’t know if that feeling will ever be a part of my life again..." She was now freely crying.... "You hurt me so bad.... but... that was not..." Maxwell walked to her and as he was standing right behind her he whispered softly...
"I always loved you and still do..." To that she turned arround and held on to him for dear life. He softly comforted her, he carresed her back reasuring her that she’d always have him...
"Max, I really can’t promise anything to you right now..." she pulled apart and looked into his eyes... "I’m sorry." With that she left running out of the house and leaving a thoughtfull Maxwell behind.
------- ------- ------ -------- ----------- ---------- -------- ----------- --------- ---------- -------- ---
"Hello? May I come in?"
"Since when do customers ask for permition to go into a shop?!"
"Well you see... I’m not really a customer, I’m more like a guy who has trouble understanding some things and would like to talk to his mother..."
"Oh ‘B’... come in..."
"Fran, I can understand why you left but what really bothers me is... well why did your mother keep the secret? I mean dad even told her of his intentions of proposing..."
"It was better that way, you guys had already..."
"Already what Fran?"
"You had already lost a mother and wife and... ‘B’ what I’m about to tell you is very hard for me to say..."
"Please Fran, I need to know why you thought it would be best to leave and stay away... I think you owe us just that much..."
"I’ll tell you what... I close for lunch break in about 10 minutes... why don’t you stick around and we’ll head over to your father’s house... I think that if I’m going to tell.. well that should all hear it together..."
"Fine with me..."
For the next ten minutes they made small chatter and got the place ready to close. Fran drove yet once again up to the mansion and sighed as she thought of how they would take it.
"Fran! Your here!"
"Yes ‘B’ and I have been talking and well... would you mind calling the girls, Niles and C.C. to join us... it’s time for you all to know the real reason I left like I did..."
Maxwell could see her struggle, this was hard on her as it was so he decided not to ask any more questions and simply did as she had asked. When the whole family was sitted down she looked arround, Maxwell stayed standing up.
"First of all I want you all to know your father’s lack of comitment was not the reason I left, I understood his fears far better than what you all thought, in fact I understood so well that you could say that was the reason that pushed me to leave and not say where to..." She looked around, they were all listening to her, "A week before I left I was told I had cancer...."
"What!" "Why didn’t you tell us?!"
"I was scared, I knew if I told you I could die, you would feel it was like when Sara had gone and I loved you all too much to let you go through that pain again, I thought perhaps I could go away for a while untill I had finished my treatement and was fine... but things complicated. I came here ‘cause I was told the sunshine would help. By the time the doctors said I was fine... well I already had my shop and I had been away for so long... I really didn’t know if you’d had me back so... I just hid here and prayed for the cancer not to come back..."
"You do realize that had you died we would’ve known sooner or later... and that it would’ve hurt just the same?"
"That’s not true Margaret, it would’ve hurt worst because we wouldn’t have been there to support you..."
"Maxwell I never meant to hurt you I just wanted to protect you all...."
"Fran? Are you really ok now?"
"Gracie, cancer is always there for some one who’s had it once... I’m ok today but tomorrow.... there’s no saying of tomorrow... which is why I can’t allow myself to love you Max... supose it came back and suppose I wasn’t as lucky as last time... I could never hurt you like that..."
"Children, Niles, C.C.... could you give us some privacy please?"
They excused themselves and Maxwell sat down as she stood up.
"If the cancer comes back or if it dosen’t has nothing to do with what you feel for me, I want, no, I need you to tell me how you feel about me... don’t protect me... not this once... I want you to be selfish..."
"The truth is I never stopped loving you and I think I’ll love you untill my dying day but..."
"No. There are no buts allowed now... I want you to listen to me Fran Joy Fine... I went through a lot of pain when Sara died but the pain would have been worst had I not spent every single moment I did with her.... If the cancer came back and I knew you loved me like you do but couldn’t spend the rest of your life with you... I wouldn’t be able to take it... you showed me, showed us all, that life had to be lived enyoing every day, you taught us how each moment was important... I want to spend every moment from today by your side and I want to be there when your scared, when your ill, when you are happy, sad or simply sleeping."
"Maxwell I can’t ask you to risk your heart again..."
"But my heart is already at risk... if you died tomorrow the pain would be there wether we were or not together... please Fran... please..." he stood up and kissed her as if to prove his point. Fran fought the kiss at first but he felt so good... she had missed him so much... she simply had to give in... "I love you... please don’t deny the love I have for you..."
"I love you too..." Maxwell kissed her once again, this time he made sure she knew it was more of a passionate kiss than just a love one. He darted his toungue into her mouth and played with hers. Fran felt her knees getting week and held even tighter to him. As they broke apart they looked into each others eyes.
"I must go... I must open the shop..."
"May I pick you up tonight... I’d like to take you out..."
"Sure... here’s my card... I close the shop at about 6 so... is 8 ok with you?"
"Perfect...." they shared a couple of pecks and she left feeling new... her whole world had changed in no time and she was happy... she had finally made peace with herself and it felt great!
---- --- ----- --- ----- --- ----- --- ----- --- ----- --- ----- --- ----- --- ----- --- ----- --- ----- --- --
Fran took a last look at herself in the mirror before opening the door. He looked nervous, happy and oh so handsome. Maxwell himself could not remember having ever seen her that beautifull. She was wearing a long, strapless blue silk dress, her hair was curly and softly pulled up, her make up was, as always, perfectly applied and her face was the pure image of happiness.
"I’m not too early am I?"
"No, just on time..." they left with no more words said. Fran was nervous ‘cause she wasn’t sure what the night would bring and Maxwell was just as nervous because of what he was hoping it would bring. The ride in the limo was quiet and uneventfull. During dinner at the restaurant they were happily chatting, every ocation he had, Maxwell would carress her hand or arm. They shared dessert, feeding each other, allowing themeselves the joy of couplehood. When they were done they went dancing and later Maxwell took her home. He walked her to her apartment and as they were at her door he leaned forward and kissed her. She was happy to accept the kiss and deepened it. She wasn’t sure of how she wanted the night to continue but she knew she didn’t want it to finish so soon. Maxwell felt her need and deepened the kiss too, slightly carressing her back.
"Come in..." she whispered the words as a plead... he noodded and she turned around to open the door. They got in and as he closed the door she pulled him in for a more passionate kiss. She was in overdrive... she needed him... Maxwell knew he needed her just as much as she did him. He scooped her up and she pointed in the direction of her room. Not breaking the kiss they were so much enyoing, Maxwell layed her down on the bed laying himself on top. They slowly undressed each other and made love for hours before falling asleep holding the others body.
Fran woke up to the sound of her alarm clock and turned around to face her lover. She slowly carresed his cheek and placed a sweet kiss on his lip. She got up and got one her robes on, she then slowly left the room to make breakfast. Maxwell woke up a couple of minutes later to the smell of coffee, he looked around and saw he was alone, he smiled at the memmory of the night before, got his boxers on and went to look for the love of his life.
"There you are..."
"Good morning sweetheart, I’ve just finished breakfast..."
"Smells great!"
"Listen I have to leave in twenty minutes or so... I’ve got to get the shop opppened..."
"You open Saturdays too?"
"Just untill 2’30..."
"Oh...." Maxwell sipped on the coffe as and idea popped his mind, it would be christmas eve the night after that... "Have you got any plans for christmas eve?"
"No, not really... why?"
"Well I was just thinking... why don’t you pack a small bag and stay with us untill tomorrow night? You could spend Christmas with us..."
"I really don’t want budge in... I mean..."
"Nonsense, I really want you spending it at home..."
"What about the children?"
"They are grown ups... what? You think they don’t know why I selpt outside the mansion?"
"Well I would think they have an idea but..."
"Please Fran..." she looked into his eyes and knew she wanted this as much as him.
"Ok... I’ll go and get a bag packed..."
"Perfect! I’ll take it with me... you can drive to the mansion straight after you close your shop..."
They finished breakfast and they both left. Fran spent the morning daydreaming, about the wonderfull night she had spent with the love of her life. She couldn’t wait to see the childrens faces when she got there that afternoon, she was really looking foward to spending these days with them... she had really missed spending Chrsitmas with them. She looked at her watch.... there hadn’t been much work today and it was just about time to start getting everything sorted. She counted the cash, locked the money into the safe and began to switch off the lights. Just as she was closing the main door, her cell phone rang.
"Yes... Fran speaking"
"Hi... just wanted to make sure you remember you are supposed to come home today..."
"Of course I remember... have been thinking about it all day long..."
"Is that a good thing?"
"Yes darling it is... I’ve just closed the shop and I’m on my way..."
"See you soon then..."
"Sure...."
"Oh Fran...."
"Yes...?"
"I love you...."
"I love you too..."
Fran drove up to the mansion and parked her car. She came down and went to the front door. Niles opened it for her and welcomed her in...
"Does Mr. Sheffield know you were coming?"
"Didn’t he tell you..."
Right from next door he came...
"No... I wanted it to be a surprise....." he walked to her and kissed her on the lips then held her by the waist and spoke to Niles... "She’s staying with us for a couple of nights... she’ll be spending Chrismas here..."
"That’s great!"
The children were just as thrilled as Niles had been... this would be a like in the old times... Fran felt like she was right where she belonged but somehow, being there, made her remember how much she had hated to stay away for so long... Maxwell was finishing a couple of papers in his office and she sat on the couch of the livingroom thinking....
"Am I interrupting something?"
"Oh Miss Babacock.... no I was just thinking...."
"Oh please! Call me C.C......"
"Only if you call me Fran.."
"Deal!..... Listen I’m really glad Max finally found you... I mean he has been looking for you since day one...."
"I’m glad to be here with all of you too... but... why are you telling me this now...?"
"I just... oh this is difficult... I need I friend..."
"You Need a Friend! Why me?"
"I don’t know but.... I always thought you were... you know friendly..." Fran could see she really needed some one...
"What’s wrong?"
"I’m pregnant..."
"But that’s great!"
"I know and I should be happier than ever but...."
"But you’re afraid he wont be as happy..."
"How did you...."
"I know the feeling... knowing you want to tell the one you love something but afraid of the reaction you may get..."
"It must have been hard for you... to have left them all... I mean you loved them so much... were you really that afraid?"
"Yes... terrified... but when I look back I wish I had been braver... The ones we love and love us will always be ther C.C. Niles will be thriled with the idea and once you tell him you’ll understand that hiding should never be an option..."
"You’re right.... thanks..." she hugged Fran and left to do what she had to do. Fran sat there and just driffeted into a needed sleep.
An hour later Maxwell found her fast asleep and knew she needed it. He picked her up and took her to his room, where her thing had be arranged earlier on. As he placed her under the covers she stired a bit and softly opened her eyes...
"What...?"
"Ssshhh... you just sleep I’ll call you when dinner is ready..."
"I’d rather you layed down with me..."
"Petition acomplished..." He took his shirt and shoes off and layed beside her holding her to his body... "Beter?"
"Hmmm" she fell back to sleep and before he knew it Maxwell fell asleep too.
Maxwell woke up to a soft knock on the door.... he lifted his head and saw Grace at it.
"Sorry dad, just wanted you to know dinner is ready..."
"Thankyou sweetheart we’ll be down in a couple of minutes..."
"Ok..." Grace left the room and Maxwell turned to face Fran. Slowly he caressed her cheek and kissed her lips. She stired and opened her eyes smiling at his atentions.
"Hi...."
"Hi sleepyhead.... Grace has just come in to let us know dinner is ready..."
During their meal the main subject was C.C.’s pregnancy, Niles, just as Fran had predicted, was thrilled with the idea of having a baby. They all discussed possible names and joked about what parts of the two parents would it have... Maxwell was happy to see his family like this, together, laughing, joking... simply being a family. Little by little everyone began to head off to bed. Fran and Maxwell were the last to leave.
Fran began to get ready for bed as Maxwell did the same. When she came out of the bathroom he was taken aback... she was wearing a purple neglegee with ribons in the right places, her hair was caught up in a pony tail and she looked like a godess....
"What are you staring at?"
"You... you look stuning..."
"Well thankyou... that deserves a kiss..." she walked close to him and kissed him slightly. It was meant to be a light kiss but when she began to part he pulled her in for a deeper one.
"Maxwell?... If you continue your assault I think this neglegee will have to go off..."
"Fine with me..." those were the last words spoken. Slowly and tenderly they undressed eachother and made love for hours. They explored eachother’s body and enjoyed every new feeling, every new discovery... Fran could not believe how tender and passionate he could be at the same time... Maxwell enjoyed the way in which she responded to his every move... After hours of lovemaking, they fell asleep spooned.
The day after was full of runing arround, they all wanted the house to be perfect, thay cleaned, checked on decorations and spent the day preparing for christmas eve. Dinner was served just on time, they had all dressed elegantly and were enjoying small conversations. Just then the phone rang and Brighton rang, he wanted to make sure he answered it. He came back with a smile on his face.
"Everything ok ‘B’...?"
"Yeah... just the call I was expecting... from some friends you know..."
"Oh yeah?"
"Fran I think he’s got a girlfriend...." Maggie joked.
"Shut up!"
They all laughed for a bit longer and left to bed with the promise of their presents the morning after that.
Early the next morning every one had gathered arround the christmas tree. They were happily openening presents.
"Fran this is for you... Gracie and I got it when we saw you at your shop..."
"Thankyou girls...." Fran opened the box to reveal a heart shaped frame with a picture of the three Sheffield children, there was a small note engraved on the silver frame which read: ‘We love you’, "Oh girls this is beautiful... thankyou so much..." just as they were hugging the bell rang and once again Brighton ran up to be the first to answer. He came back with a smile on his face.
"Who was it Brighton?" his dad enquired.
"Fran here’s my christmas present..." he stepped aside and in came her mother, her father and Val. Not saying a word she ran to hug them. She hadn’t seen them in a very long time.
"What are you doing here?"
"Well... Brighton called us and booked us three tickets and hotel rooms...."
"B!"
"Well Fran... I just wanted to give you something you really needed and I know you needed to see them and hug them so... here they are." Fran smiled at the boy and huged him.
The rest of christmas day was spent together. Fran took her friend and parents to see her shop, her apartment and spent the afternoon with them. She had acepted to stay at the Sheffield’s home for another night but she wanted to spend some time alone with her family, Maxwell had understood completly. They were having a cup of chocolate at her place and chatting when Sylvia brought up the subject.
"How are you feeling?"
"What?"
"I mean I know you told us you were ok but..."
"Mum the cancer is gone... I can’t say its for gone for ever but I’m enjoying life..."
"Does he know?"
"Who? Max? Yes, and so does the whole family... they know I’ve got to be in alert but... as I said I’m going to enjoy life to the fullest... Maxwell has finally come around and we are sharing the love we have for one another... that’s all that counts right now... I’m happy..."
"We are glad you are...."
------------ -------------- ------------ ----------- ------------- ------------- ----------- ----------- ---
Fran and Maxwell got married the following year and before they knew it Brighton had finished colledge and gotten married, Gracie had chosen to do her last year in Europe and Maggie had given them a grandchild. The whole lot had gone from the house and Fran and Maxwell were left to enjoy their privacy.
One morning things changed though. Fran had been having terrible headaches but hadn’t told anyone. She had thought they would disapear but they didn’t. Everyday they got worst and worst untill they were just too much to hide. Maxwell had noticed them and had tried to convince her to visit a doctor, but she had refused. That morning Fran woke up and just as she stood up she fell on the floor. Maxwell phoned inmediately an ambulance and she was rushed into hospital. She was examined and doctors of all kinds ran tests.
"Mrs Sheffield, my name is Doctor Johnson... we have bad news..."
"It’s back..." she stated it with no hesitation. She knew this day would come.
"I’m afraid we have found a malignant lump in your brain which is growing too quickly to be operated..."
"What does that mean?" Maxwell still understood nothing.
"It means I’m dying..." soft tears fell down her cheek as she spoke, "I’m right, aren’t I Doctor?"
"I’m afraid so...."
"How much time...?"
"There’s no way to know, three months... six at the most" with that he left the room, understanding the couple would need some time to digest the news.
Maxwell looked at her. He could not believe what he had just heard, Fran was dying. The cancer was back. He always knew this day could come, but he had prayed and hoped it wouldn’t.
"Maxwell?" she looked at him, "Maxwell I want you to listen to me."
"Ok."
"We both knew this day could come, I want you to know you have made me the happiest woman on earth, I want you to know I’ve never regreted the time we’ve spent together and I need you to promise me something..."
"What?" He was freely crying now, she whiped the tears from his cheeks and continued.
"I need you to promise me you’ll carry on when I’m gone, promise me you will not hide, promise me you’ll live life to the fullest."
"Fran.... This is so difficult.... so unfair... so wrong!"
"But its they way it has happened and I need to know you’ll survive..."
"I promise..."
The weeks turned into a 2 months and Fran had become weaker, she no longer left her bed and she could hardly talk anymore. The time was coming. She was going. The children were all brought to the house at her request
Brighton came in first. He walked into the room and sat on the bed beside her.
"Hi B...."
"Hi..." he tried to hide the tears...
"B.... when I’m gone I need you to do something for me..."
"What ever... just name it."
"I need you to look after your father... he is so fragile some times... I’m afraid he wont look after himself properly."
"I promise Fran but... who’s gonna look after me?" he was already in tears.
"I will, and your mother will still be looking after you, just like she’s done all along... I’m so proud of you B, look at you... married, independant, mature... I know you’ll be ok..."
"I’ll miss you...."
"When you do... just remember the times we spent together and you’ll see how close to you I still am..."
"I love you..."
"And I love you..." Brighton huged her and left the room. Maggie came in next.
"Maggie... come... sit here..." she did so and looked at her.
"Are you scared?"
"No... because I know you will all be fine... I know you have enough memories of our time together to last you a life time..."
"I am... I don’t know what will be of us when your gone..."
"Maggie? You are all here today because this may be the last time we will share together but... I asure you this wont be the last time you see me... every time you watch a picture of all of us, or simply listen to Barbra song just close your eyes and I’ll be there..."
"Fran?"
"Yes?"
"I love you....." they shared a hug and she left, allowing Gracie to step in.
"My baby... come sit with me..."
"Fran? Before you say anything I’d like you to know I’ll never forget you..."
"I know baby... but I have a special assigment for you..."
"What is it?"
"I want you to glue this family together... don’t allow them to withdraw from one another... you’re so smart..."
"I promise Fran... but please... Fight!"
"No fighting will do now baby... its the end... would you tell your dad I’d like to see him now?" the girl nodded, huged her and left in tears.
"Grace said you wanted to see me..."
"It’s the end Max... I feel it and..." her words began to fail her once more.... "and I need you to hold me..."
He quickly held her as tears rolled down his cheek. He heard her breath slowing down untill it simply stopped. He still held her for what seemed like ages. Finally he laid her on the bed kissed her pale lips and left the room. Outside, the whole family could see in his face she had finished her suffering at last and cries were heard all over.
--------------- --------------- ------------- ------------- ----------------- ----------------- ------ -----
(One year later)
Maxwell stood infront of her grave and looked at the sky.
"Fran... my love... This past year has been harder than I thougth it would be but lots of good things have happened too... I guess you know... I even think you’re responsible for some..." he softly chuckled and bent down carressing the stone with her name on, "Gracie is getting married... can you imagine it? Our baby is getting married! Brighton and Melissa are having a little girl and they are calling her after you... you would be so proud of little Sara... Margaret says she taked after you... so smart and outgoing... C.C. and Niles are back in New York... and me... I’m just surviving... like I promised you I would... I’ll always love you me darling... for ever."
The End
