Maxwell was in his office working. C.C had taken some days of. The kids were at school and Niles was in the kitchen. Fran walked into the office.
"Mr. Sheffield, I don't think we can have dinner tonight. Niles and Miss Babcock have canceled and kids forgot about it and all made plans for tonight." Fran sat down on the love seat, a little depressed about the dinner. Maxwell looked up.
"We still could go, just the two of us." Fran looked up, a little happier.
"Maybe he's finally going to make his move." She thought. She started to smile. Maxwell was happy she was happy.
"So, I pick you up at eight." He said while he planted a little kiss on her cheek. Fran just said "Yes." and exited very happy. She immediately called Val.
Maxwell stayed in his office, thinking about a lot of things. First he thought of Sarah and about how much he loved her and the kids. Then he thought about his feelings for Fran. How hard it had been for him to admit to himself that he loved her. He thought about how hard it must have been for her and about the men she had dated and how she had almost been married to some of them. Then he thought about how it would make him feel if she left. So after all these toughts he decided that it was time to make his move. He walked out of his office and went to the kitchen to talk to Niles.
Fran was in her room later that day. All of her clothes were pulled out if her closet and piled up in her room. Val came in. "What's the matter Fran. You sounded so..so.."
"Happy? I know. Me and Mr. Sheffield are going out for dinner. Just the two of us. No kids, no Niles no nothing."
"That's wonderful. Ooh, what are you wearing?" Fran fell down on the bed, almost desperate. Val looked at all the clothes. Then she took the red valentine's dress and gave it to Fran.
"Why don't you wear this one? You know he likes it." Fran looked at it.
"I didn't he liked that one" she said. Val looked at her and said, "Come on, the way he looked at you when you wore that dress, are ya blind?" Fran looked at her with a "Like I didn't know" look. She quickly put on the dress and they both started working on her make up.
When they were finished Val left down the back stairs and Fran stayed in her room.
When it was almost eight o'clock she came down the main stairs.
Maxwell was already down stairs and when he saw her he could do nothing but stare. She was so beautiful. His feelings for became even stronger. He just wanted to tell everything he had in his mind right now, but he knew it was better to wait a few hours.
Fran saw him stare and loved him more with every second that passed. He took her hand and led her further down the stairs. They looked in each other's eyes expectantly and almost kissed but Maxwell backed out at the last moment to get her coat. Fran was a little disappointed but thought, "The night is still young, it could still happen."
They both sat in the front seats of the Town car. Fran talked on and on about the kids, her mother and her day. Maxwell was just listening, thinking how typical talking on and on was for Fran.
They arrived at the restaurant and the waiter led them down to a romantic table. The table was lit by candles and was a little separated of the rest of the restaurant. Fran was completely taken by surprise and looked at Maxwell with question marks in her eyes, but Maxwell said nothing and led her to her seat. Maxwell ordered some food and wine for the both of them, while Fran looked at him with expecting eyes.
Then he started to talk. "Miss Fine" Fran interrupted. "Please, Mr. Sheffield, we've know each other for over four years, you can call me Fran." Maxwell felt a little uncomfortable, but he realized that it could only make what he had to say a lot easier.
"OK, but then you must call me Maxwell or Max."
"Max will just do fine." The waiter arrived with the food and the wine. When the waiter left, Maxwell took Fran's hands. "Fran I've know you for over four years. And although I've denied it at first, I've fallen in love with you." Fran's hands started to squeeze Max's, but when she looked into his eyes she knew there was nothing to be afraid of. At least not tonight.
"Ooh Max" she said and she kissed his hands. Max started talking again.
"At first I denied it because I felt like I was cheating on Sarah. When I finally figured out that she would have loved for me to go on with my life, I got scared and searched for another excuse to deny it. So I said to myself that it would hurt the kids if it didn't work out. But they already love you like a mother, I think I would hurt them more if I let you walk away." He looked into her eyes and saw she listened with tears in her eyes. He saw all her fears and doubts for the first time. She wanted to say how she felt but she just couldn't find the words to express herself and to express her love for him. "Don't talk." Maxwell said while he stood up and led out the restaurant to a limo in front of the restaurant.
Fran sat down besides Maxwell in the back of the limo and looked at him. "I have a small confession to make." He said with a little smile on his face. "I send the kids away and gave C.C. the week of because..." He paused and took her hands. "I rented a private jet and we're flying to Paris tonight." She looked at him in surprise. "Don't worry, everybody knows about, even Sylvia and Val. I had to promise them some theater tickets but they kept silent." She looked completely lost. Max put an arm around her and she just snuggled up to him. He kissed her face very gently. The limo arrived at the airport and they got to the plane very fast because they had no luggage. Then Fran regained her senses and spoke for the first time since they left the restaurant. "Oh my god, Max we don't have any luggage. No clothes, nothing." She said, a little panic in her voice. "Don't worry. I let Val pack some clothes and Niles brought them to the plane before we left the restaurant." He said to her with a smile.
They sat down in the plane and Max opened a bottle of champagne. He filled two glasses and toasted to the trip. They drank something and put down their glasses. They looked into each other's eyes and almost kissed, but this time it was Fran who pulled away. "Ooh Max, I have some things to say too. I was also afraid and my biggest fear was that my feelings for you weren't real. That's why I dated so many other men. I know it's a lame excuse but I just... I don't know." She looked at Max who could do nothing else than hug her. "I love you so much." He said before he kissed her. For the first time that night Fran felt al the fears leave her body to be replaced by immense love for Max. "I love you too" was al she could say between kisses.
The plane landed in Paris and the got into a limo. They didn't speak during the ride to the hotel. Fran thought "Ooh my god, I can't believe this is happening. He admitted he loves me and we're in Paris. I finally am sure that I love him too. And when we're back I need to have a good talk with Mom and Val. I can't believe they kept this from me. Well it doesn't matter 'cause it's wonderful."
Meanwhile Max is thinking, "Well this was a lot easier then I thought it would be. I am glad everybody kept it a secret. Now let's hope that she likes the rest of the holiday too." At the same time they looked at each other and they kissed. They arrived at the hotel where Max had the hotel prepare a romantic suite. When they arrived, Fran was completely surprised. The suite was filled with roses and candles, and the bed was made with silk covers. Maxwell took Fran's hand and led her in the room. The bellboy put down the suitcases and left. Fran looked expectantly at Max who started kissing her. She kissed him back and pushed him gently on the bed. He started kissing her neck and took of her dress while she undressed him. They just kept kissing each other until the jetlag kicked in and they both fell asleep.
When Fran woke up the next morning she felt she was alone in the bed. She got up and put on a robe. Then she saw the tray on the table. On the tray stood a vase with a single red rose with a note besides it. The note said:
She felt happy. She opened her suitcase and could not believe what Val had picked out. These were all the clothes she knew Max liked very much. She put on a short black skirt with a white turtleneck. She thought about last night. "It all went so fast. One moment I'm depressed about dinner, the next I'm in bed with the man I love in Paris. Which reminds me, he's probably waiting for me."
When she arrived at the restaurant the waiter showed her the table where Max sat. He seemed all lost in thought so she decided to get him out of it with a kiss. He looked up and kissed her back. He stood up and led her to her chair. Max knew she wasn't she wasn't so scared anymore, because she immediately began talking. Max let it come over him with a smile on his face. "So, what are we going to do today?" she asked. "I hired a boat for this afternoon, and I have a special surprise for tonight. And I thought that while you are in Paris, you would like to go shopping." He answered. His thoughts were right read because she sat there with a big smile. They finished their breakfast very quickly.
Max and Fran went shopping and Max picked out a beautiful nightgown for the night. When they had had lunch they went to the boat Maxwell hired. It was a small yacht with a small cabin. They sailed over the channels and they had a wonderful time. It was lovely, and Fran enjoyed every second of it. Max asked Fran to change in her new nightgown, because they weren't going to stop by the hotel. She did. When they returned to the harbor, Max took Fran to a limousine. "Where are we going?" "It's a surprise." Max answered with a smile on his face when he realized Fran couldn't take the suspense. He put his arm around her. The limo stopped and they got out. They were beneath the eiffeltower. Fran looked at him for answers but he just silently led her to the entrance. When they got to the top Fran saw a table with two candles and two plates of dinner on it. Fran thought it was wonderful, but there was one problem. Ever since she was a kid she had been afraid of hights. But Maxwell looked so happy and proud that she didn't want to ruin this moment. It could still be romantic. She just had remind not to look down.
They sat at the table and talked about all kinds of stuff. After dinner Maxwell turned on a radio and they danced to the music. Fran loved it, but could no longer deny the fact that she was cold and scared. She shivered a little to let Max know.
"You cold?" He asked.
"Yes. I'm sorry. It was a wonderful dinner, but could we please go back to the hotel?"
"Sure. Besides I know some fun ways to get you warm." Fran smiled and they went back to the hotel where they shared their hearts and their souls.
After they had made love Fran and Max laid 'spooned' against each other. Fran felt Maxwell's bare chest against her back, and heard his regular breath, indicating that he was asleep. She on the other hand was wide-awake. She was thinking about the last couple of days.
The dinner, the trip, the day in Paris. But she decided that he admitting he loved her was the most important thing of the past week. He had finally committed.
The End
