She had never felt this way before. As they kissed good-bye that morning something tugged at her heart. She had a sudden feeling that something terrible was going to happen. Some how when she returned from shopping that day all would not be well in the Sheffield household.
Max: Darling, are you all right?
Fran: Yeah sorry I ...um...was just thinking.
Max (smiling): Is that a first?
Fran: Ah hah!
As she looked at him now she could still hardly believe that he had finally married her. She had waited forever to marry him and now it had finally come true. After she chased him to England he had come back to the states, specifically to LA. That is where he had finally proposed to her and she had willingly accepted. Fran couldn't stand the distance between her mother and her so eventually, actually after a few hundred more productions of CATS, Broadway had enough money to swing open its doors once again and they invited Max back with open arms.
Max: Fran?
Fran: Oh I'm sorry.
Max looked at her awkwardly and then shrugged it off.
Max: Brighton, lets go!
Brighton, now 21, rushes down the stairs. He hadn't liked Oxford much and had dropped out after 1 semester. He was now looking into Harvard, which is where Max and he were headed to for the weekend.
Fran: Oh B. How many times do I gotta tell ya? Shave that thing off.
Brighton: Hey some girls like goatees. Let's go dad.
Max: Bye sweetheart.
He leaned over and kissed her gently. Just then a horn sounded.
Max and Fran: Val.
They smiled and hugged.
Max: I love you.
Fran: I love you more!
As she lets go of his hand her feeling of dread increases so much that she almost wants to tell him not to go. She knows she's just being ridiculous. It's probably just because they were always together since they had gotten married. Still she couldn't shake that feeling and when she and Val were in the mall it hit her like a ton of bricks. She tries to call home but no one answered.
Fran: Something's wrong! We gotta get home!
Val: Ok. Just let me find my keys.
When they got to the car Fran could cry.
Fran: You locked your keys in the car again?! Oy! I swear if your neck didn't connect your head to your body it would fly away.
Val agrees! Then she realizes what Fran has said and makes a weak dirty face. She runs to the locksmith place in the mall. 55 dollars and 20 minutes later they are in the car and on their way home.
Fran bursts through the front door and immediately knows her worst fears has come true. Everyone looks solemn and staring off into space. Maggie and Grace had come home from the college party Grace had attended. Niles' face is red and C.C. still scorned from Stephen Spielberg turning down her idea of a partnership is there, face red and tear stained.
Fran: What's wrong?
No answer.
Fran: Please don't do this. Tell me! Is it Max...Brighton? Are they ok?
Niles grabs her arm and leads her toward the kitchen. Fran is now in hysterics.
Fran: Niles PLEASE!!!
Niles slowly turns his head toward her and begins to speak.
Niles (holding back tears): Master Brighton was driving towards Harvard when a...a...car swerved. He...um...came into their lane..but..Brighton had no time to react....Head on. Driver...may have been drunk....
He can't say anymore and grabs Fran towards him. She begins to wail into his shoulder and they cry together.
Meanwhile Max and Brighton are being pried out of the wreckage. The jaws of life needed to be brought in. Brighton is brought out first and laid on a stretcher. He is mumbling and bleeding as they shoved him into the awaiting ambulance. Max is harder to remove because, like any other parent, when the car hit them he dove over to Brighton to keep him from going in to the windshield. Due to the impact of the crash, Max's head had hit the windshield, cracking it, and the rear view mirror, breaking it off. He then ricocheted into Brighton's lap. They had to be very careful when they lifted Brighton out because of Max's injuries. They place a neck brace on him and realizing that his back isn't broken they slowly lifted him so they can remove his son.
Paramedic 1: I don't think this guy's going to make it.
Paramedic 2: Don't say that. The minute you think that will be the minute we give up and he will to so just SHUT UP!
The first paramedic stands up, soaked in blood, and gawks. He is the senior partner and as far as he is concerned the one who knows more about what went on. He had seen cases like this before and even if they did live they were never the same again. Sometimes they were in a coma and never woke up. He bends back down and tries again to free Max.
After 10 minutes of cautiously trying to lift Max out of the car they finally do and to the first paramedics surprise he is still breathing. However the paramedic is still skeptical because of the amount of blood already lost. Loading him on the stretcher was a delicate task as well. They put him into the ambulance and start to drive away. The second paramedic looks back out the window at the wreck of what was once a car and lowers his head. It seemed like even though they were going as fast as they could they weren't going fast enough. Half way to the hospital they hve a scare as Max's heart stops and they couldn't restart it. Just as they are about to stop CPR his heart makes a slight murmur.
Paramedic 2 (under breath): Hang in there.
The second paramedic is more sympathetic because he had watched his own father die in front of him in a car crash. He had been called to the scene and realizing it was his father immediately started to try to free him. The paramedics had given up on him and his father had died on the spot. That's why when his partner gave up on this guy, whom he recognized somehow, he couldn't take it.
Fran sits in delayed shock as Niles speeds towards County General. She is remembering back to when she had met the family and they had taken her in. She thinks about her first kiss with Max at Sardy's and Brighton being "smaller" than the other kids in gym class! Every one sits silently screaming as their silent tears fell. When they arrive they are immediately ushered back to the emergency waiting room where they know a long sleepless night is waiting for them.
It is late at night when the doctor finally emerges from the OR.
Doctor: Hi. I'm Dr. Mathers. I operated on Maxwell and I am here to tell you that he is in very serious condition and in a deep coma. (Speaking to Fran) Your son is doing well. He was very lucky that his father did what he did, but we are not out of the woods yet.
Fran has no idea what he is talking about so he explains to her how Max had saved Brighton's life. Tears begin to fill her eyes as she realizes that he had risked his life to save Brighton and now there is nothing they can do for him.
Dr. Mothers: I know this is hard for you. If you would like you may stay here through the night. I'll have one of the resident nurses bring you some blankets. I'll be back in an hour or two to tell you more on Mr. Sheffield's condition and whether or not you can see him, but you may see Brighton if you want to.
Everyone rises as the doctor slowly leads them down the hall towards Brighton's room. As Fran enters she sees "her boy" sleeping silently. The only noise is the constant beeps of the heart rate monitor. C.C. stands in the door way with Niles as Fran, Maggie and Grace walk up to the bed. Fran stands up by Brighton's head, while Maggie and Grace are at opposite sides holding their brother's hands. Fran slowly slides her hand over his forehead pushing his bangs back. He looks so young and helpless despite the goatee. As she does this he stirs slightly and mumbles something inaudible. Niles and C.C. walk over.
Brighton: HmMfmh...
Fran tries to smile despite what she knows she will encounter if/when she ever sees Max again. After about 45 minutes she can't stand anymore and has to go sit down. She walks back out to the waiting room followed closely by Niles. He knows that she will need someone, and despite his new feelings for C.C., which scare him, he always has a special place in his heart for Miss Fine...Fran. He had felt stupid and a little embarrassed after she came to England. After all he had told her that he had a crush on her. None of that mattered now. What matters now is she is a friend in need and he wants to be there for her.
Fran sits down on the couch and puts her head in her hands. Niles sits down beside her and lays his arm on her back gently rubbing. She looks up at him and with out warning kisses him. Just a little peck to say thanks. She then flings her arms around his neck and hugs him. He holds her close to him for a long time. When C.C. comes out to the waiting room a pang of jealousy hits her.
C.C.: This is ridiculous. He's comforting her and yet I feel jealous! What's happening to me? I can't stand the Brillo Pad!
An officer begins to saunter toward them.
Officer: I know that now is not the time but I just wanted to let you know that we have arrested the woman who struck your loved ones. She will be detained until her trial and will recieve the maximum allowed by law. Not only was the lady drunk but she had popped a few pills before driving and was wrestling with a dog in the back seat. The dog was killed immediately. I'm very sorry about this entire situation but please know that we are doing everything we can to insure that she is prosecuted to the fullest. Your loved ones will be in our prayers. Is there anything I can do for you?
Niles waves his hand at the officer as if to say no. The officer understands and leans over to Fran before leaving. He places a sympathetic hand on Fran's shoulder as Fran continues to cry. No amount would ever be enough to replace Max and Brighton. No AMOUNT! The officer leaves onlJust then the doctor saunters in, somber and melancholy.
Dr. Mathers: One of you may go see him. I warn you however, that he is in very bad shape. I've never seen someone with so much head trauma still breathing. He's definitely a fighter.
Fran (to herself): That's my Max!!!
She lifts her tired body off of the couch and with a final squeeze of Niles' hand she follows the doctor down the corridor. As she enters the room she immediately has a feeling of regret. Maybe she shouldn't have been the one to go in. She walks closer and closer to him. Her gaze moves from his feet to his chest and up to his head where she can't help but begin to cry. The top of his head is covered in bandages and his face is severely swollen. She sits down in the chair and lays her head on his chest. This is not a comfortable position however and eventually a nurse brings a cot in and she curls up next to him. That's when she hears it, one of the prettiest songs she has ever heard.
Spend all your time waiting
for that second chance
for a break that would make it okay...
She glances up at Max and sighs. She hears his gentle and somewhat labored breathing as his chest slowly rises and falls.
Fran: I know you can't speak but I heard somewhere that even when people are in comas they can still hear. I just wanted to say that I love you, Maxwell. Please hang in there. We need you. You may not know it but you are the strong one in our family. You are our "angel."
She gently kisses his swollen cheek and then lays her head on his chest once again.
There's always some reason
to feel not good enough
and it's hard at the end of the day...
I need some distraction
oh beautiful release
memory seep from my veins
let me be empty
and weightless and maybe
I'll find some peace tonight.
She wipes the tears from her face and snuggles in closer all the while memories flash through her mind.
A few bedrooms down Grace and Maggie sit talking to their brother, lost in sleep. They make each other laugh. Their eyes begin to get heavy and they lay their weary heads on each other. Still looking at their brother they smile and despite the trauma of their father they attempt to fall asleep. The sweet tones of the song echoes through the room.
In the arms of the angel
fly away from here
from this dark cold hotel room
and the endlessness that you fear
you are pulled from the wreckage
of your silent reverie
you're in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort here
Meanwhile, curled up on the double couch, C.C. watches Niles pace back and forth restlessly. She hates to see him tormented like this.
So tired of the straight line
that everywhere you turn
there's vultures and thieves at your back
and the storm keeps on twisting
you keep on building the lie
that you make up for all that you lack
As he continues to pace she can see his face turning redder and redder until finally his body is shuddering with each sob. This is when she finally can't take anymore and that feeling has returned. She stands up and stops Niles in his tracks. He looks at her with his big, blue, crying eyes, which seem to scream "help me" and comes closer to her. Without a word, she wraps her arms around him and holds him close. Tears begin to stream down her face as well. Niles sits sideways on the couch and C.C. leans against him. She grabs his hand and wraps it around her. The gentle harmony of a familiar song drifts through their ears.
it don't make no difference
escaping one last time
it's easier to believe in this sweet madness oh
this glorious sadness that brings me to my knees
Back in Brighton's room the two girls have fallen asleep near their brother, whose hands they still holds. Maggie holds Gracie's hand.
In the arms of the angel
fly away from here
from this dark cold hotel room
Niles is no longer afraid of his feelings for C.C. and he puts his other arm around her. They too gently drift off to sleep. A few blankets cover them but the true warmth comes from their love for each other.
and the endlessness that you fear
you are pulled from the wreckage
of your silent reverie
Fran continues to listen to Max's breathing and feel the steady rise and fall of his chest. The last few words of the beautiful song begin to play and suddenly Fran doesn't feel so alone any more.
you're in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort here
Fran's eyes begin to flutter shut and she nestles herself into Maxwell whose arm she has wrapped around her.
You're in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort here.
Almost on cue Fran floats off to sleep as her memories turn into her dreams and she subconsciously smiles.
The family slept through the rest of the night despite the constant hustle and bustle of the ER/Recovery.
In the morning Max and Brighton are moved to the ICU. Brighton is conscious and is now able to speak a little. Fran has awakened first. When she walks out to the waiting room she sees Niles and C.C. still sleeping. She smiles and then turns and walks towards Brighton's new room. Maggie and Gracie are still asleep grasping their brother's hands. She gently wakes them up. They exit and Fran is now left alone with Brighton.
Fran: Hi Honey.
Brighton's eyes flutter open.
Brighton (slowly, voice cracking) Hey Mom.
He smiles.
As Fran and Brighton are talking Max is enveloped in his own world. He is walking down a dark tunnel with a very bright light at the end. As he continues to walk a voice calls out to him and he stops dead in his tracks.
Max: Sarah?
Suddenly a figure materializes and begins walking toward him.
Sarah: Yes Max. It's me.
Max: But I...you..are...
Sarah: Dead? Yes. I have come to tell you that it's not your time yet Maxwell. If you walk any further you'll be giving up Niles, C.C., the children,...Fran.
She looks deep into his eyes. He looks away but she holds his chin and glances at him again.
Sarah: ...Forever.
Max: Oh, Sarah. I miss you so much. I know that you sent Fran my way so I could learn to love again...and I do, but I don't think that I'll ever be able to forget the love that we shared.
Sarah: Max, you'll never forget me or that love. Just look at the children. I'm there. Look at the photographs, home videos, and even the house. I'm there. You've never been with out me, Max. Even though you can't see me, I'm still there. I think I have pretty good taste when it comes to Fran as well.
Max smiles.
Sarah: See? Look at you, smiling. You're eyes are direct windows to the soul and they are sparkling. I love the way she has touched your life and the children's. She has changed your life for the better. Now, are you going to tell me you are going to end all that to spend an eternity with me? I would love to have you don't get me wrong, but is it really fair to put Grace, Maggie, and Brighton through that pain again? Let alone Niles, C.C., and Fran. I want you to see something.
She leads him to a dark corner of the tunnel. Suddenly a cloud of smoke appears and Max is standing in the house. The children are younger and sitting solemn on the sofa. He looks at Sarah confused.
Sarah: Watch.
************************************************************************
Maxwell, 6 yrs. younger walks in the front door, solemnly hands Niles his coat and sits down on the couch with the children, who begin to cry.
Maggie: Dad. Why?
Maxwell turns to her, his face red.
Maxwell: It was better that she was taken quickly. She was suffering terribly honey, but now she's ok and she'll always be with us.
He holds Maggie's hand as she cries on his shoulder. The other two come over for a big bear hug.
************************************************************************
Max: This is the night you died.
Sarah snaps her fingers. They are still in the house but this time Maxwell is in the office working on paper work with C.C. Brighton has just scared off the last nanny with his "suicide." He sits in the kitchen playing Game Boy, but when he hears the doorbell and commotion at the front door he grabs his retractable knife and Ketchup and gets ready for his next victim.
Sarah: What happened? You were too busy all the time.
Max: Probably conveniently busy.
Sarah: Maggie's at school, being teased and Gracie's at therapy. Therapy for a young girl? Just look at Brighton. He's starved for attention. Attention he needed from you. When it wasn't working I sent along a reinforcement.
Sarah looks at Max's watch.
Sarah: It's time.
Just then the doorbell rings. In walks Fran cosmetic bag in hand.
************************************************************************
THE FOLLOWING LINES ARE FROM "THE PILOT" OF THE NANNY
Fran: Hello. I'm Fran Fine.
Niles: Yes. Come in. We've been expecting you.
Fran: You have?
Niles: You are here for the Nanny position?
Fran: I could be. Wow! This place is nicer than my Uncle Jack's condo in Boca and you know he bought the model.
Niles: May I present your resume to Mr. Sheffield.
Fran: Uh resume? Ya know what? Why don't you go get this Mr. Sheffield and I'll do the resume presenting myself.
Niles: As you wish. (under his breath) This ought to be good.
Sarah: Brighton, who has just emptied the rest of the Heinz 57 Varieties on his chest is now going to try to get attention the only way he knows how.
Just then Brighton walks in with the knife in his chest. He "dies" next to Fran.
Fran: Do you have a pen? Oh forget it.
Maxwell appears.
Maxwell: Brighton you're losing your touch. I'm Maxwell Sheffield. This is my son the "late" Brighton Sheffield.
Fran steps over him.
Fran: Wait I know you. Esquire Magazine. New York's 10 Most Eligible Widowers? My condolences by the way.
Maxwell: You read Esquire?
Fran: When they list the 10 most eligible widowers I do. Hi. I'm Fran Fine.
Maxwell: Well, uh, do come in.
Fran follows Maxwell.
Fran: Oh boy do you have gorgeous chachkas.
Maxwell: I beg your pardon?
Fran: Ha ha! You know your bric-a-brac, dust collectors?
Maxwell: Ah the Roden yes, well he was well known for his bronze chachkas. May I see your resume, please?
Fran: Oh yeah, ah sure.
Maxwell: Crayon.
Fran: Lipstick.
Maxwell: Of course and what a lovely shade.
Fran laughs!
Brighton: I HATE her!
Maxwell: Now Brighton, let's not be hasty.
Fran: Yeah. I haven't even sung "Climb Every Mountain" yet.
Maxwell: Uh, Miss Fine, you seem to have listed the Queen Mother as a reference!
Fran: What? Let me see that. Oh no that's not the Queen Mother, that's my mother from Queens.
Grace and Maggie enter.
Grace: Hi Daddy!
Maxwell: Oh, hello sweetheart...Maggie.
Maggie: Hello Father.
Fran: Oh boy are you gorgeous? And look at that hair. Ya see now ya can not get color like that from out of a bottle. No way.
Maggie: I'll be in my room doing my homework.
Brighton: Really lights up a room, doesn't she?
Fran: Ya don't need personality when you're an heiress.
Maxwell: So sweetheart, how was therapy today, hmm? Any, um, breakthroughs?
Grace: Dr Barn and I did some regression. She took me back through my childhood.
Fran: Must've been a quick trip.
Grace: Oh you have no idea how complicated I am.
Fran: Oy, therapy huh?
Brighton: It was a lot easier than talking to us directly.
Maxwell: Alright that's it Brighton go to your room.
Brighton: Alright. Come on Gracie. Let's leave father alone to hire someone else to take care of his problem children.
************************************************************************
Sarah: See there you go again. Pushing him away. You knew he was right.
Max: Yes but he didn't have to act that way in front of...oh you're right. I was so predictable then.
Sarah: Then?
Max looks at her with his cockeyed smile.
************************************************************************
Fran: Oh, you're a bitter little person, aren't you? Oh we're going to get along fine.
Maxwell: I'm...I'm sorry you had to see that. I'll show you out.
Fran: What'd I do? One smart-ass remark from the kid and I don't get the job? That's not fair.
Maxwell: As you can see I need help here. More help than can be provided by a door to door cosmetics girl.
************************************************************************
Sarah: I thought that you weren't going to hire her and I couldn't have that. So well let's just say that suddenly "THE NANNY AGENCY" didn't have any openings to send someone out until Monday.
She covers her mouth with that fake "oops" look.
************************************************************************
(Phone rings) Maxwell: Niles, NILES!
Fran: Oh, for G-d's sakes I'll get it....Sheffield residence...No honey it's Fran.
Maxwell: Gi...Gi...Give me that.
Fran: It's "THE NANNY AGENCY."
Maxwell: Maxwell Sheffield here...(covers receivers, speaks to Fran) Thank you.
Fran: Oh yeah right.
Maxwell: No, no Monday is not acceptable. Listen, I need a Nanny this weekend! (slams receiver)
Fran waves.
Maxwell: Do you have any experience with children?
Fran: Are you kidding? I practically raised my sister's two kids when she was suing her chiropodist.
Maxwell: There has to be another agency.
Fran: Oh please, I come from Flushing. There is nothing that these kids could throw at me that I haven't seen before, except maybe their trust funds.
Maxwell: Alright you're hired, but on a trial basis.
Fran hugs him.
Max: Oh.
Fran: Oh thank you Mr. Sheffield. Thank you so much. You won't regret it.
Max: Some how I'm rather sure I will. Niles will show you to your room.
Maxwell exits.
Fran: Ohhhhh, The Nanny gets to live here?
Niles: Is that a problem?
Fran: Oh yeah, I'm sure I'm going to miss being 29 and still living at home with my parents, but if it's best for the kids...
Niles (smirking): 29!
Fran: Don't start with me Niles.
Niles and Fran walk up the stairs together.
************************************************************************
Sarah: And so it begins.
She snaps her fingers again and now Max sees when the children are kidnapped. This switches to many scenes where the children look quite happy. Then the time changes to the time his twin brother tried to reek havoc on the family.
Max: I started to think I wasn't who I was.
Max smiled and then scratches his head.
Sarah: Who's been there for you through all of this? Fran!
Suddenly the scene changes and Max and Fran are standing alone in the house. They are talking and Max strains to hear.
************************************************************************
(The Day the Lights Went Out On Broadway)
Max stands, leaning in the doorway to the hall. She walks over to him and he wraps his arms around her.
Max: You're beautiful, ya know that? You remind me so much of my late wife. Maybe that's why I've had such a fear of commitment. When she died I was so positive that I would never be able to love again. Well, I was wrong, dead wrong. She was beautiful and full of energy. When she walked in a room everyone turned their head. (Pause) I've loved you since the first time I set eyes on you. It scared me and I resorted to being even more stuffy than before. I had an immense fear that somehow I would be cheating on my wife. I know it sounds silly but it's true. When I was growing up my parents would never let me step in puddles. "You'll get your new goulashes wet!" they would say, and heaven forbid I should try to eat snow. I was never allowed to really have fun, but Fran I wanted to be able to do these things. When you arrived I knew you were the one for us. You brought so much to those kids lives, that I'll never be able to thank you enough. Not to mention the marked improvement in our wardrobes! Who would've thought that a "Sheffield" would fall in love with a cosmetic salesgirl from Flushing New York, but I did, and I'll never be able to let go. You have touched so many lives that you don't realize how much you-.
He begins to trail off and his eyes begin to fill with tears.
Fran: Weren't you the one who told me to pull myself together. I need you to be strong. The kids need you. (crying) Ah what the hell! There's time for courage later. You have taught me so much about your life that I could never repay you either. Thank you more than words can say.
Max: -mean to everyone. Looks like the end of an era huh? Here take this.
He hands her a handkerchief and an envelope.
Max (con): Don't read it until I'm gone.
Fran looks at him with crying eyes.
Fran: I think it's the beginning of a new one.
Max smiles and holds her close. As they fall into each other, Fran smells his cologne again. Only this time she realizes that it would be the last time (in America at least).
She begins to cry and can feel his body tighten as if he wants to cry but is ashamed too.
Fran: It's not healthy to hold it in babe.
Max begins to sob on Fran's shoulder. It feels good that she had called him babe. He wants to hold her and never let go but he knows what he has to do.
Max: I love you Fran.
Fran: You too Max. Forever and ever.
He brushes the hair away from her face and kisses her forehead gently. He closes in on her face and they kiss gently, with rising passion.
Max: See ya.
Fran: B-(she remembered what Max had told her once, "good-bye is too final")
See ya.
She slowly lets go of his hand. (even upset he looks good and how about that kiss!) She walks toward the door. She looks back once and leaves.
************************************************************************
Max, with tears in his eyes, turns away.
Max: It broke my heart to leave her, but I didn't have a choice. She was meant to stay in N.Y. and I was destined for London. Fate tore us apart.
Sarah: It wasn't just fate that brought you together again but another four-letter F word.
She shoots a glance at him. Max chuckles.
Sarah: Fran.
Sarah snaps once again.
Max: I feel like I have just entered the Twilight Zone...or a really bad I Dream of Genie rerun.
Sarah: Just you wait.
Now they are sitting in the pews of a church. Maxwell is standing at the altar waiting for Fran who doesn't show. Sylvia gets up and runs to her dressing room. Maxwell soon follows. The crowd begins to get restless wondering what is going on.
10-min. later Maxwell returns as the music starts to play again he takes up his position and awaits his beautiful bride. Max wipes away a tear in his eye as he watches his own wedding day unfold again.
Max: G-d she is beautiful.
Sarah smiles.
After watching the ceremony the scene's fast-forwarded to their honeymoon.
Max: That was an interesting couple of days.
As Maxwell continues to watch it fades out and fades back in with them in the backseat of the Ferrari. Brighton is at the wheel when suddenly a car swerves into their lane. Maxwell shuts his eyes and hears the crunch of the metal.
Max: Brighton?
When he opens his eyes he is in the emergency room watching every one in silent torment.
Max: Brighton! Oh my G-d!
Sarah: He's ok. Calm down. See?
They flash to the present. Fran sits still talking to Brighton in his room.
Sarah: Now the ball is in your court. It's time to make your decision now Max. What'll it be?
************************************************************************
Meanwhile Fran gets up to get Niles and C.C. Niles was already walking in the door as she walks out . C.C. was right behind him with Maggie and Grace. Brighton immediately reaches his hand out for Niles to slap when he sees him. Even though they generally never talked there had been those few times late at night when Brighton had snuck into Niles' room and talked to him. Niles was like a brother to him and Niles feels the same about Brighton.
Brighton: What's up?
Niles: Oh look Master Brighton can speak English sort of. Not much. I was scared for you pal.
Brighton: Yeah well you know me always the one to scare people.
He says this and smirks as he remembers back to all the times he had faked suicide on the parquet floor. Niles sits in the chair that had been occupied by Miss Fine only moments before. Now came the question that Niles had hoped he wouldn't ask.
Brighton: How's dad?
Niles: Um..he's still in a coma. Not much has changed. The doctors all say there isn't much to be done.
Brighton: He saved my life.
A tear begins to roll down his face.
Brighton: (repeated with rising passion) He saved my life and the doctors say they can't do anything?
His lower lip begins to quiver and Niles grabs his hand and holds it tight.
Niles: If I know your father he'll be fine. It doesn't do anyone any good for you to be upset like this. It's alright.
C.C. watches this with amazement. She never knew that Niles had this kind of affection in him let alone the unknown friendship with little Scott...Peter...Brian...ok the kid in the bed! A thing that she has never known except through child-hood came over her and a lonely tear falls down her face.
After a few more sleepless nights...
Fran wakes up and enters Max's room. Something tells her that this time will be different. Something is going to happen that will change her life. She slowly approaches his bed. She grabs his hand and kisses it. As she starts to sit down she feels a slight squeeze.
Fran: This has to be my imagination.
She leans over to his ear.
Fran: Max if you can hear me squeeze again.
After a pause that seems like an eternity he squeezes. Fran is in tears as she screams for a nurse. The skeptical nurse comes in, thinking Fran must be hallucinating. She walks over to the edge of the bed where Fran now stood and grabs his hand from her. Another squeeze is felt and both women look at each other in shock. Fran is so overjoyed that she wants to hug and kiss the nurse but refrains. Hearing the commotion Niles, C.C., Maggie and Grace enter the room. Fran has tears streaming down her eyes now and they immediately think the worst.
Fran (meekly): He squeezed!
All: What?
Fran (a little louder): He squeezed my hand!
Everyone is so overcome with joy that they don't hear the nurse tell them that there is still a long way to go. They are too busy hugging and kissing each other to notice. Niles runs over to Brighton's, who can now walk unassisted, room to tell him the good news. A few more hours go by and Max's eyes flutter open. Fran is taken by surprise because she had resigned herself to never seeing them again! His green eyes sparkle as he glances around the room. Everyone is there and anxiously waiting for him to speak.
Max: Where am I?
Niles looks at Fran who looks back at him. He doesn't remember? He has amnesia? Hundreds of questions go through everyone's mind at the same moment and then a sly smile crosses Max's face.
Max: I'm fine.
He looks at each one and slowly tells them their names. He becomes disoriented and closes his eyes. His smile quickly fades as he realizes who is not in the room but had been in the car.
Max: MY SON! Where's Brighton? Is he alright?
Fran: Yes he's fine. You gave us all quite a scare! He's in the room across the hall but the doctor's say he can go home.
Max seems to relax a little knowing that his son is safe. Just then, Brighton hobbles in and immediately goes over to Max. Max reaches up and touches B's face. He wipes the tear from his son's cheek. Brighton smiles and then they embrace. Max can feel Brighton trembling against him and rubs his back.
Max (whispering): It's alright. Everything is going to be ok now. Relax. It's ok.
Without realizing it tears begin to flow down his face as well. Fran silently motions for everyone to leave. Max and Brighton continue to embrace each other. Crying on each other's shoulders they fully begin to comprehend the severity of what had happened and how close they had come to never seeing each other or the ones they love ever again. Brighton grips his father harder holding him close. He can smell his dad's cologne and he looks up towards heaven.
Brighton (motions with mouth): Thank you.
At the same time Max looks up and whispers.
Max: Thank you Sara.
They gently let go of one another and look into each other's eyes. Then they compose themselves as "real men" do and pretend that this had not just occurred. They look at each other's awkwardness and begin to laugh.
Meanwhile the rest of the family is waiting outside of the room. When Fran hears the laughter she begins to smile herself. She turns to Niles.
Fran: Ya know it's true what they say. Ya never know what you have until it's gone. That's a sound I never thought I'd hear again but I gotta tell ya it's a relief to hear it!
Niles gently puts a hand on her knee and purses his lips. He smirks at her.
Niles: Never a truer word spoken Miss- Fran. (Pause) Come on let's go see what they're up to.
As they walk in...
Max: I had a dream...and you (Fran) and you (the kids) and you were there (Niles and C.C.).
He smiles and then continues.
Max: Life is too short to waste. It took me almost dying to realize that.
Fran: Ya know for someone who just woke up you sure do have a lot to say.
Max: I'm playing catch up. I just want you all to know that I love you and couldn't live with out all of your support.
They chat for a little while longer. The relief is overwhelming throughout the entire family. All know what they had almost lost yet all know how much stronger they have become because of it. This is the tie that bonds and this is what families are made of.
After a few more days in the ICU and several months of physical therapy, Max is finally able to leave the hospital. This has its good points and it's bad points. Being an able body adult he is allowed to sign himself out. This becomes pointedly obvious when Fran and Niles come to pick him up. They walk into his room and find it nicely tucked in and dusted. They go up to the nurse at the front desk who is buried deep in paper work.
Niles: Excuse me ma'am.
The nurse looks up very agitated but still tries to be pleasant. Something she must've been taught back at nursing school. "How to be pissed but look pleasant."
Nurse: Yes?
Niles: Um. We're looking for a patient who is not in his room. As a matter of fact it looks as if he hasn't slept in that bed for awhile! (Nervous laughter) Could you possibly tell us what might've happened to such a patient?
Nurse: Name?
Fran now sick with worry: Fran Fine.
Niles: Not yours, HIS!
He turns his attention back to the nurse.
Niles: Maxwell Sheffield. S-H-E-F-F-I-E-L-D.
The nurse gives him the "what do ya think I am? Stupid?" look. A look she must've perfected through the many years she had obviously been working. She checks her computer.
Nurse: Ah yes. Here he is. He checked himself out yesterday.
Niles: Did he say where he was headed?
Nurse: No but he did mumble something about Sara? He didn't seem to recognize me even though I brought him his breakfast every day. I just shrugged it off as the thanks that I get working here.
Niles and Fran look at each other panic stricken. Had his mind relapsed? Was he now SERIOUSLY living in the past? Does he really have amnesia? These questions race through their minds as they shove open the hospital doors and go on a desperate search for Maxwell.
Meanwhile, Max is walking around, knowing where he is but not at the current time. He is stuck back in the time when Sarah was alive and life was happier. He walks through Central Park where he sits down on a bench and relives the long summer days he and Sarah sat there talking about their future plans with each other. A woman walks by him whom he immediately associates with Sarah. He runs up to her.
Max: Sarah?
The woman (obviously startled): Yes?
What a coincidence! This woman's name is also Sarah. However if he would've been with all his faculties he would've seen that this woman was old enough to be his mother! He wraps his arms around her. She hugs him back, not exactly sure what is going on. She catches a cop's eye who is patrolling the park and he strolls over to them.
Police Officer: Hello folks. Is everything ok here?
He directs this question more at the elderly woman. She takes it in stride.
Woman: This man seems to be looking for someone named Sarah. I don't think he's in charge if ya know what I mean.
She points to her head and the officer immediately catches on.
Police Officer: Could you come with me sir?
Max: I just want to spend time with my wife before she's gone. That's all. That's ALL!
He breaks down into tears and it takes all the officer has to drag him away from the woman. She feels bad for this strange man in a way. Obviously something happened very tragic to him. By the fact that he still has a hospital bracelet on he must've just "recovered."
Woman (as she walks away): I hope you find your way home soon Mister. I know I've been looking for home for 30 years.
She sadly goes off in the other direction, remembering, herself, and another time.
Fran and Niles have now circled around central NYC a few times. So many times in fact that the police are beginning to wonder if they're drug dealers in search of a buyer. One cop stops them.
Police Officer 2: Hi folks. How are you doing today?
Niles: We're fine and you?
Police Officer: I'm not in a mood for small talk so why don't we cut to the chase. You guys have been wandering around here all after noon and I was just wondering why.
Niles: The truth is-
Fran: Excuse me? Colombo? Do we look like drug dealers to you?
Niles smacks his head.
Police Officer2: Can you two step out of the car please?
They comply and within minutes other officers arrive to strip the car. When the find nothing (as usual) they leave except for "Colombo."
Colombo: I'm going to ask you again what you're doing here. Julia Roberts could you keep quiet so your father can speak?
Niles opens his mouth as if to say something but Fran quickly holds it shut.
Fran: Even though you have just attacked my character I will be silenced.
Niles gives her a "this is a miracle" look and then glances back at the cop.
Niles: We were looking for a friend of ours. He was in a hospital and apparently signed himself out this morning. The problem is that apparently he had a relapse of amnesia and is now walking around downtown not knowing where he is or more specifically living in the PAST!
Police Officer 2: You know how many people do that a day? I mean come on this is NEW YORK!
Fran makes a face like she's about to say something but Niles stops her. Even though he himself wants to knock this cop out he thinks better of it. After all Joe Paterno isn't here to cover up for it. (Sorry Little Panther hating Lion Joke there) Just then a call comes in over the radio.
Dispatch: Car 54, Where are you?
Niles and Fran have to giggle.
Police Officer 2: I hear ya.
Dispatch: Finally Ryan. You answer. I hope you weren't doing any unnecessary search and seizures.
Ryan (turning red): Nope.
Dispatch: Ri-ght. Anyway, Serge wants you to come in. We have a missing person here. Actually he's not missing his family is and we figured you'd be the best person for the job.
Ryan: Does he have ID on him?
Dispatch: No he doesn't.
Ryan: Well I have two very concerned citizens here who have been looking for their friend all afternoon. I'm going to bring them in and see if we can straighten this out, ok?
Dispatch: 10-4.
He puts the radio down and tells them to follow him to the station. Fran doesn't want to get her hopes but can't help but feel a little bit of relief that they had found SOMEONE. When they arrive at the station they are ushered into the office where a lady stands. A man sits next to her with his back to the new arrivals and a blanket draped over his arms. Even from the back of the head Fran can tell it's Max. She slowly encounters him. She leans in front of him and he looks at her with a look of complete confusion. It's as if he doesn't know who she is or where he is.
Max: I just wanted to spend time with Sarah.
Ryan: Is this him?
With a shaky hand Fran hands him the wallet which she had been clutching. He opens it.
Ryan: Maxwell Sheffield? THE Maxwell Sheffield? Broadway Producer?
Fran and Niles (at the same time agitated): YES!
Ryan: Well when he snaps out of it gives him this.
He pulls out of his desk a resume.
Niles: Sure will.
He snatches the resume from him and gives him an "Of all the times" kind of look.
Niles: Is it everyone in this town?
He mumbles to himself incoherently although it was definitely full of derogatory phrases for the officer.
Fran: Come on Max. We're going to take you home.
Max: Where's Sarah?
Fran purses her lips and places a hand on his shoulder
Fran: We'll go see her now.
Niles looks at her puzzled but they slowly help him out of the chair and out to the car. The cop is still looking at the picture when Niles comes back in to retrieve the wallet.
Niles: Thank you. Keep being New York's finest!
He smiles falsely and on his way out deposits the resume in the trash. As they drive back to the condo Max continues to ask when they will see Sarah and Fran, with tears in her eyes, keeps telling him soon. She whispers in Niles' ear and he nods. He makes a right turn onto a pretty much unused road and through the gates of the cemetary. As they drive to the back Max begins to wonder why they are in such a strange place. Niles gets out of the car and opens the door for Mr. Sheffield and Fran. They walk over a few rows to a stone which had been given fresh flowers a few days earlier. Max looks down at the grave stone and tries to comprehend what the words say. Suddenly, everything comes back to him in one huge wave and he is over come. He puts his hand out on the stone to hold his balance. Then the worst sound Fran had ever heard occurs. Max screams.
Max: O G-D!!!!!!!!! My Sarah......Not my Sarah............PLEASE!!!!!!!!! G-d find your own love. Find someone else...not my Sarah Please G-d NO!!!!!!!!!
Fran puts her hand on his back but the tears overcome his eyes and he falls to his knees. Niles kneels beside him and Max grabs his arm. It's at that moment that Niles realizes how much Max means to him and how much it would've killed him to lose his best friend. After all they had been friends since childhood. No one can replace that sort of bond. He covers his hand with his own and he bows his head as well. Fran's tears begin to fall as well and she rests her head on Max's back.
Fran: It's ok baby. It's ok.
As each tear falls a memory takes it's place. Soon he is kneeling by the gravestone crying uncontrollably and all Niles and Fran can do is hold him close. The three adults cry out for the loss of a friend, a mother, a wife. Even though Fran had never met Sarah she knows how much she meant to the family and cries for the loss of such a woman. Max slowly rocks back and forth as his tears sting his eyes and fall. Every tear, that for so many years was bottled up inside, falls into the ground and gets soaked up by the earth. Just then the sky darkens and small drops begin to fall. Fran smiles as she looks up at the sky. She continues to hold Max in her arms until his final body tremor subsides and he wipes away the last few tears. She gazes into his beautiful eyes and smiles.
Max: I'm sorry.
Fran: Don't apologize.
She says this as she chokes back the last of her tears. Niles wipes his face and smiles.
Niles: Look at us. The three of us sitting here crying like little babies in the rain in the middle of New York.
Max: Always the one with the quick wit eh Niles?
Niles: I guess so.
Then the three embrace and head back to the car. Before they leave Max goes over to the grave and speaks.
Max: Sarah. I will never forget you and all that you have brought to the family. Your warm smile, lit up my life. Your laugh filled my heart with joy. You changed my life and how I look at it. Even though our time together was fleeting you must understand my love that no one will ever take your place. Every time I look at the children I'll think of you and not feel so much pain anymore. As for Fran, thank you. I have made so many wonderful memories with her because you sent her my way. I'm no longer alone and I no longer feel the everlasting void that came with your passing. I miss you terribly my angel but I know that someday we will be together again. Until then my love I bid you adieu. Good night sweet heart. I love you.
He walks back over to Fran and Niles who give him another hug and then they all climb back into the limo. Max stops for a second, rain drops dripping down his face, turns and purses his lips. Then he looks up at the sky letting the rain sting his eyes. He sighs and climbs into the limo to head home. Home, he thinks to himself. Home is where the heart is. As they slowly pull out of the cemetery, for a fleeting moment Max swears he sees Sarah sitting on her grave. Her arms outstretched. She smiles at him and blows him a kiss. Then she's gone. Just as the last raindrops fall.
Standing outside of the condo Max thinks about how long it has been since he's been home. Everyone who had been inside rush outside to embrace him.
Brighton: Lovely weather we're having ain't it?
Max: This is why we're making sure you go back to college.
He smiles and wraps his arms around his son.
Brighton (as they embrace): Thanks dad.
Max closes his eyes and squeezes his son harder. No words are needed as father and son bond for the first time in a long time. Maggie is next and she gives him the biggest bear hug ever.
Maggie: I love you dad.
Max closes his eyes tight.
Max: I love you too sweetie.
He holds her tight. His oldest baby, his little girl. Where had all the time gone?
Gracie grabs him and holds him tight. She buries her face deep into his chest.
Gracie: Daddy, don't do that again! I was so scared! (Crying) I love you daddy! Please don't leave me. I can't bare it again!
Max breaks down and cries, holding his daughter close. Never before had there been such an outpouring of emotion between the two.
C.C. wraps her arms around his shoulders and gives him a hug.
C.C.: Welcome back. You've got a good woman here but I don't know what I'd do if I would've had to deal with her without you.
Max chuckles.
C.C.: You think I'm kidding.
C.C. looks at Fran and smiles. It was the first true smile Fran had ever seen from C.C. towards her. She smiles back.
Niles: Well it looks like it's going to rain again. Why don't we head inside?
Everyone turns and walks into the house. Fran walks slowly up the steps holding on to Max's hand. Just as they approach the door Fran stops. She looks at Max.
Fran: I love you.
Max: I love you more.
Fran: Not possible.
Max: Wanna bet?
Fran: Something like that!
Fran smiles sexily. Max gives her a mischievous grin and then begins to follow her inside. He stops short but tells her to continue in. He stops again gazing up at the sky where a rainbow has formed. He smiles to himself and enters the house, immediately enveloped in the controlled chaos inside. In a way that's a fitting ending. It's just a shame that it took near death for them to discover life.

Moral of the story:
When you were born you were crying while those around you were smiling. Live every day to the fullest so when you die you'll be smiling and all those around you will be crying.
