I do apologize for continuing this earlier, but between husband, school and work I haven't had time to write.

Death of a Nanny

Maxwell Sheffield couldn’t believe what he had just heard. His beloved nanny and probably best friend besides Niles for the last few years was gone. No time to say goodbye. She was gone in an instant before he had time to express his feelings towards her.

A creak in the floor brought him back to reality. "Are you all right, sir?" an aide worker asked him.

"Yes. Thank you," Mr. Sheffield said and turned around and walked out.

At the Sheffield mansion Niles and C.C. had returned back to reality after their heated love making session. They were snuggled together in Niles’ bed.

"You know I could get used to this," C.C. said to an exhausted Niles.

"Damn woman! I knew you were a tiger in some areas but you are vicious when you have wild, uninhibited sex.

"Are you ready for Round Two?" C.C. asked seductively.

"I don’t know if I’ll ever be ready!" Niles stated.

"Well I’m ready and I see another part of your anatomy is ready too!" C.C. smiled with glee.

Suddenly the two lovebirds were at it again.

Maxwell Sheffield didn’t know what his next step should be. Should he try to contact Fran’s parents and gently explain to them that their daughter was dead and it was his fault or try the house where his children would never forgive him? He couldn’t believe it that the vivacious women that ruled his house was now gone.

He began to walk away when one of the aides stopped him.

"Sir, I understand that this is a difficult time for you at this moment, but I have been requested by the rescue workers that someone go and claim the bodies of the deceased so the proper procedures for burial can begin."

"How far is it to the hospital from here?" Mr. Sheffield asked.

"It’s not too far, if you would like to walk."

"Yes. Walking will give me a chance to put this in perspective," Mr. Sheffield said. He didn’t understand why he said the word perspective. Actually he really wasn’t in the mood to talk to anyone and he was thankful for the opportunity to be alone instead of trying to entertain someone with nonsense.

After receiving directions to the hospital Max could see the cameras and the crowd forming waiting for local and hospital officials to begin the press conference. He thought for a moment to go over there and see if the news was any better, but didn’t want to deal with the crowds. Instead he turned in the opposite direction and started walking the ½ mile or so to the hospital to identify Miss Fine’s body.

The phone rang. Unfortunately, Niles and C.C. had fallen asleep in each other’s arms in Niles’ room where there wasn’t a telephone. It was the school requesting that the parents pick up their children. Until a parent could be reach, the children were to remain at the school for their own safety. Although the all clear sign was given, it was not safe for the kids to walk home due to the power lines and debris strewn across the major and side roads.

"You don’t think anything happened to them?" Gracie asked.

"No, I don’t think so," Brighton chirped in.

"Miss Fine doesn’t go to the mall during the day while were in school. Usually she and Niles sit in front of the television and watch that Mexican soap opera during the afternoon much to chagrin of Dad," Maggie said. "I’m sure that they’re fine. Maybe they’re on their way here to pick us up."

As Maxwell walked to the hospital he began to reminisce about his and Miss Fine’s relationship. Some of the memories made him angry, some made him smile, but at the end of the day, he knew right where she was - safe and sound; upstairs in her room; in his house. He never thought that he would have to go to the hospital, to the cold, sterile room of the mortuary and identified yet another body. He had been through this routine before when Sara had died. He started remembering the emotions that he went through. At first he was in disbelief because he couldn’t believe that his beloved Sara was gone. It possibly couldn’t have been her in that crumpled car, or what was left of the car. Why did some stupid jerk have to get behind the wheel and slam into her? It wasn’t fair! He didn’t even have a scratch on him, while his lovely wife Sara lay dead in a cold, white room.

Niles could hear some type of ringing but he wasn’t sure where it was coming from. He gently untangled himself away from Ms. Babcock and followed the sound. He realized it was the phone and ran to grab it.

"Hello?"

"Niles?" Maggie asked.

"Yes, Ms. Margaret. What do you want?"

"Could you come and get us from school? We need for someone to pick us up."

"Yes, I will be there soon. Bye"

"Thanks, Bye"

C.C., wondering where Niles went, was descending down the stairs.

"Sorry Babs, but I have to go pick up the children from school."

"I understand. Maybe later we can continue?"

"I wouldn’t miss it for the world!"

"Have you heard from Max, Niles?"

"No."

"I hope she’s okay."

"Yeah, me too."

Max finally got to General Hospital. He didn’t know what next to do. Should he go into and say "I’d like to identify a body"? That wouldn’t be quite the thing to do. How does a person go to a hospital and tactfully say that they’re here to i.d. a body? He thought about it for a moment and decided to let whatever happens, happen. What else could he do? I’m sure he wasn’t the only one that would be here to claim their love ones.

Casually, Maxwell walks into hospital. He could see the bright lights of television cameras at the emergency room entrance trying to get the scoop on the tornado. He walks up to the receptionist and explains to her the situation. She asks for Fran’s name and she looks for it on the list.

After reviewing the list she looks up and says, "She’s not on the deceased list."

Maxwell was in shock. "Excuse, but are you sure?"

"She didn’t use a different last name?"

"No"

"Then she’s not on the list. Hold on for a second and let me see if I can try to get you better information."

Maxwell mumbled to himself, "She’s alive?"
