As CC stood in the alcove just outside the door leading to the inner sanctuary of the Sheffield home her mind was reeling at all that had just transpired in a very short period of time.
Niles had proposed four times!
She thought, "Why would he want to marry me?"
Next she relived the scene in which Niles finally stopped acting so pathetic with his pleas of marriage and gave her something to really think about…her pathetic life…If life is the word used to describe her existence. It was all seemed to be crashing down around her.
Would she be able to carry on after once again "staying too long at the fair!" She definitely would fight making a return trip to "The Place." But what will life hold for CC Babcock without the stability offered by her job with Maxwell Sheffield…indeed the stability offered by the entire family including that babbling bimbo of a nanny, Fran Fine.
Sure she had carried on for years acting the love-struck business partner.
But that really was just an act to keep herself at a distance from everyone.
She knew 20 years ago when she walked through that door that now stood at her back, the Niles had been the one who captured her attention.
Later she realized he had captured her heart. Still mother BB and sister DD, not to mention brother Noel, would all make fun of her if she revealed the real desire of her heart…and what about Niles himself?
He would have the most fun of all with the knowledge that the self-absorbed CC wanted the Tidy Bowl Man.
Butler Boy had definitely gotten under her skin… and her mind was like a computer overloading with too much information…too many memories standing there trying to make a decision as to her next move.
What should she do? What was the right answer…after all her biggest fear was making a mistake.
Her next biggest fear was that of humiliation…. especially humiliation that she brought down on herself courtesy of Niles.
Of course everyone thought that she believed she was too good for the "servant." Truth be known, she feared he wouldn’t think she was good enough for him.
CC’s mind raced back through so many memories but paused at one special recollection.
It was December 1995. The scene in her mind centered on a vacation that Niles was planning.
She couldn’t believe he really was going to take a trip to some exotic isle at Christmas. After all, this is Niles’ we’re talking about. He was genuinely distressed that Maxwell wasn’t taking the family on a trip that year. This prompted CC to say, "Oh please…the lost Marx brother Cheapo.
Niles responded, "Are you suggesting I’m Frugal?"
"Come on Niles. You never break a buck! You live in Maxwell’s house. You eat his food. Nanny Fine got you that Flowbee so you can cut your own hear," said CC in bringing Dust Butler down a notch.
Then she recalled her final question to Niles, "Where do you stash your cash?"
"Somewhere you’’’ never get near," responded Niles.
CC quickly came back with, "Oh your mattress."
"No his (motioning to Maxwell)," said Niles once again having the last word.
But those weren’t his last thoughts on that day about the topic. Silently he added in his mind with a certainty, "I’ll have you in my bed someday…just not yet." Still this remained unknown to CC.
Time passed from that time when the talk was about mattresses. Years passed until the present arrived and CC still was standing outside the door deciding what to do next.
CC Babcock had always been a take-charge kind of person.
Usually she got what she wanted.
Trouble was, she couldn’t admit what she wanted when it came to Niles. All she could do was bombard him with words of hate.
For years barbs and banter between the two had been hurled and the sparks between the two continued to fuel a slow smolder that eventually erupted with that kiss in the living room.
Who knows what would have happened that night had she given into the desires she felt and that she knew Niles was feeling.
He definitely was exploring all sensitive areas but again fate stepped in When Maxwell and Nanny Fine walked through the door. The moment was at an end. Even though both had been drinking, the kiss was evidence of their attraction to each other. There was definitely a physical between the two…still CC wondered, had they crossed the thin line that divides love and hate?
Of course they’d carried on as if nothing had happened, but still there were the times she found her self remembering the kiss and staring at him. Likewise, Niles was doing the same. Both would sometimes catch each other staring.
Then everything erupted after Nanny Fine’s marriage to Maxwell and she rejected Niles’ four marriage proposals.
Niles turned in his resignation, a move that shook CC to her core.
She really didn’t want to be a part of Sheffield Productions if she wasn’t going to see her Niles everyday.
Still, she couldn’t admit those feelings. She asked herself, "Why do I continue to sabotage this situation. He’s asked me to marry him. I should be elated. IT IS WHAT I WANT and I want to scream it to everyone.
But so many years of practical jokes and arguments just couldn’t be overcome in a few days. "What if he’s like Max was with Nanny Fine and takes it back." She just couldn’t trust herself and in part she didn’t trust Niles. "How can I begin a relationship with a man I can’t trust," she asked herself.
"What am I saying? Fact is we already have a relationship. It’s just sick and twisted. Niles at least is trying to make it ‘normal’ if that is possible."
All these thoughts were flying through her mind as she waited outside the doorway. Then she heard Maxwell and Fran talking. Nanny Fine was actually chastising Max for "interfering." This coming from the great Yenta herself, as Mrs. Sheffield chased Maxwell into another part of the house.
A plan was beginning to form in that great tactical mind of CC Babcock’s. She knew what she was going to do…the time was now.
She would have to make the first move.
Quietly she opened the door and re-entered the Sheffield home.
She saw what she was looking for on the table, right where she had left it. It was that damn tape recorder. It had been her undoing and brought all matters to a head.
She really hadn’t meant to capture Niles third marriage proposal on tape. She was just starting to make a reminder to herself with it about a business related matter. Could she help it that he blurted out the proposal just as she punched the record button?
When that happened during that fateful dinner, CC knew she had enough firepower to keep the dust devil at bay for a long time. She hadn’t given any thought as to how his male pride would respond…and respond it did. He resigned from the Sheffield household…a place he truly considered home. That wasn’t a reaction she had projected in her battle plan.
………………………………………………..
Meanwhile, as all these thoughts shot through CC’s mind, Niles was having his own mental battle.
There was no doubt about his leaving. It was time to move on. He had said it and he meant it. Niles wasn’t the type to take anything back that he said. Once the decision was made no one would be able to change his mind.
Back in his room Niles finally exhaled and relaxed. "No looking back old boy," he told himself. "If only falling out of love could be so easy. All those words I said to Ms Babcock…If only I could take them back. She needed to be reminded that she had stayed at the fair too long. He knew she didn’t love Mr. Sheffield. Yet there seemed to be no way she would ever admit to loving the butler.
"Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive." Niles thought he and CC had been deceiving each other for years about the nature of their true feelings. "We have definitely weaved a web that seems to doom us both to lonely lives. There’s just no way I can get through her thick hide."
How long had Niles known that he loved CC. Was it from the beginning? There was that immediate animal attraction he had felt since the moment she walked through the door of the Sheffield home. Yet he was the perfect butler, one who knows how to hide his true feelings.
Yet slowly the bantering had started between the two. Then in recent years it escalated to all out warfare. There was never any ceasefire; even during the number of "dates" they’d shared when either needed an escort to a special occasion.
Strange how neither had ever had a date to joint in celebrating the really big events. But it really wasn’t strange to Niles.
He realized a long time ago that both he and CC really preferred each other’s company to that of less witty companions. Niles Oxford education allowed him to hold his own with the best, and he admitted to himself, "The best is CC."
"I’ve got to stop thinking about her. I’ve got to focus on the task at hand and finish my packing," Niles told himself.
The problem being, that there just wasn’t that much to pack.
There were few personal items in his room that had been his home for 20-plus years. "Home isn’t about personal items. It’s about being together with family," Niles told himself.
Yet in reality, Niles knew he had lived his life through Maxwell Sheffield. No he didn’t want Fran but he did want to be successful at something other than being a butler for once in his life. That’s why he had concocted the plan to produce a play…. "Even that didn’t melt the heart of the ice princess."
"How could I have proposed four times to her? What got into me?" Niles knew it wasn’t what got into him as much as it was what he wanted to get into.
At that thought he inhaled sharply.
The physical desire was overriding his common sense.
Niles told himself he was just too obsessed with CC Babcock to make a rational decision.
Yet he had tried to do the honorable thing. He wasn’t after a one-night-stand type of guy where CC Babcock was concerned. He could have had that at any time Niles thought…and maybe they did the night of the Sheffield wedding reception, yet neither had a memory. They did wake up together in his bed. Still, he was sure he had been too out of it due to over indulging in 25-year-old scotch.
However, when he awoke that morning after the wedding and he wasn’t "too out of it" he had wanted her very much.
Still he did nothing but go downstairs and find Mrs. Fine at the backdoor. Sylvia could quickly kill any romantic mood. Maybe that in its own way had been a blessing.
Then when CC had made her way downstairs, both were eager to deny any possibility that something might have happened and that seemed to be the best way.
They had always preferred to handle their situation by ignoring it.
That made it easier, less complicated…. well maybe he was kidding himself about that.
CC was all about complications. She really didn’t understand the concept of love and he, Niles had failed to make her understand. He started to tear up, as he is prone to do during happy and sad times. He just needed to stop thinking about CC Babcock. "Move on old boy," he told himself out loud trying to find that famous reserve the British are known for.
……………………………………………….
As Niles continued to dwell on what might have been, CC had made her way upstairs. She had stopped in Nanny Fine’s old room. There were a few matters to take care of for her plan to work.
A short time later she exited that bedroom and made her way toward another bedroom, Niles’ room.
She was sure he would still be there.
He’d told the family he wouldn’t leave until morning.
CC was still gripping the recorder with a shaky hand.
The recorder had been her undoing. Now she hoped it would be her salvation….
………………………………..
She knocked on Niles door as she took a deep breath. It was easy to find the room; after all she’d found herself in it one morning not too long ago.
"Who is it," asked Niles. No response. He walked to the door and opened it to see CC standing there. He glared.
"What is it? Didn’t have enough fun at my expense earlier," he asked staring at the recorder she held in her hand.
CC, wearing that soft smile she saved for special moments when thinking about Niles punched the recorder. Niles cringed expecting to hear his voice once again sounding pathetic as he pleaded for her to marry him.
He had interpreted her smile as more a sneer.
Instead he heard, "My I come in?" Niles raised his eyebrows in that trademark look of incredibility that he so often used with CC.
"What’s this about," he asked, still full of skepticism
Again she turned on the recorder. CC’s voice once again came from it. "We need to talk without others interfering. This is about us. You and I. We don’t need Max or Nanny Fine to referee."
By now Niles was intrigued with what was going on, but still leery of CC’s intentions.
Niles acquiesced by stepping aside and allowing her into his sanctuary.
CC caught her breath and moved forward.
"All right. We’re alone. What is it you want," Niles asked again as he closed the door behind her.
CC again punched the play button on the recorder. "Niles I want to say this and I don’t want to make a mess of it."
"Say what?" By this time Niles wasn’t sure if he should be looking at CC or the recorder.
The recorder responded with "I want you to know how I feel."
"Look Babcock, this is beyond what you feel now. You’ve humiliated me. Now it’s about how I feel and it’s a mixture that includes rage so don’t push me too far."
Again the recorder, "I know that you’re very upset. Understand that I’m not the type of person who can show her emotions easily. You of all people should know that by now."
Niles again moving his eyes back and forth from the recorder to Babcock’s face asked with a frustrated tone, "What is it you want?"
CC punched the recorder on again. "I want you." The look in her eyes told him she was serious.
Niles stood there letting what had been said sink in for a minute.
His thoughts told him, "She wants me but she didn’t say she loves me. She wants me. What now," he thought silently.
As he was mentally considering what she had said, his body was already betraying what he was feeling physically.
He wanted her.
The passion that he had suppressed for far too long was taking over.
In the instant it took to digest the mental and physical sides of the situation he closed the space between them.
Niles responded to Babcock staring into her beautiful eyes. "I want you," he said as he grabbed her and crushed her mouth and her willing body to his.
CC felt the same sensations as Niles. There was no going back.
There was no control.
Though not a violent man by nature, Niles took control without even realizing it. As he continued to crush her to him, without even thinking about it he maneuvered toward the wall of his room pinning her to it.
He couldn’t wait for the bed.
As they began to explore each other with their mouths and hands, suddenly he felt the zipper to his pants being pulled down. This only excited him more and CC could tell he was excited.
Their clothes seemed to almost disappear magically form their bodies.
With a swift move he pushed her hard against the wall and joined with her as she gasped and a moan escaped from CC’s mouth, which he was all but devouring with his own. They were one with each other. Nothing would ever change that no matter what the morning might hold.
This wasn’t sweet love making. This wasn’t a tender moment.
This is what happens when the flames of passion are allowed to smolder too long and both think only of fulfilling that desire and experiencing those secret dreams not shared with anyone.
Niles continued to explore her body just as she was exploring his. Still it was hard and fast and there was nothing either could do to slow the moment.
Neither wanted to slow the moment.
What happened next was surprising. Both reached their point of satisfaction simultaneously. It is a rare event between a man and woman. Something shared by few but both new it was happening as they both all but blacked out from the mixture of pain and joy that blends at this special time.
Both collapsed against each other for support to keep from falling to the floor.
As she held on to Niles, CC continued to experience multiple satisfaction, something she’d never known before.
All this had taken place as they were against that wall, with CC’s legs wrapped around Niles. Now they were panting trying to think clearly, but that wasn’t happening.
For a moment CC worried about Niles’ heart but realized given the fantastic shape of his hard lean body, the he was probably healthier than she would ever be. She wondered what would come next.
As Niles became aware of what was happening and both were returning to reality, he determined that now the lovemaking would start.
He carried her to his bed and placed her on it gently. Their first time had been raw passion.
This time it would be pure love.
He gently started to kiss her, starting with her mouth and moving toward her most private of areas. When his tongue found its target, CC was again brought to a point of great satisfaction as he showed her that he knew how to use more than a feather duster…although that gave him another idea for another time.
At this point Niles wanted possess all of her …inhale her if possible.
CC wondered what other surprises Butler Boy would have for her before the night was over.
This time the passion was still intense, but redirected with a slower pace.
It was truly making love and again CC wasn’t sure if she could stand so much happiness, not to mention satisfaction.
She never wanted to be apart from Niles again. She needed him. He was part of her.
She knew that all these years she had only been denying herself an immense amount of satisfaction.
She wanted him and needed him and she didn’t care if it meant running the risk of losing him.
All that mattered to CC at this point was that she was with him and she would work on ways to keep him. This was one she wouldn’t let get away, yet she always knew that so many others (not that she’d slept with that many) were merely cast aside by her because they weren’t Niles.
Niles’ thoughts were along the same line as CC’s he planned to continue to do whatever it would take to keep her with him in his bed and in his heart.
She hadn’t said she loved him, but he knew there was definitely a special connection. While the experience with the wall might not have been what he wanted for their first time he also knew it was what was what had to happen when the Ice Princess came toward his flame.
After several rounds of lovemaking, they found it nice just to relax in each other’s arms and sleep. That’s how the Sheffield’s found them several hours later.
Within a few moments of the Sheffield’s closing the door the two stirred and wondered what had awakened them.
They both decided they were a bit hungry after so much physical activity.
Niles bounded out of bed and headed down the stair singing, "I’m too sexy for my feather duster….." Then he came upon the Sheffields sitting at the kitchen table as he made his way to the Sub Zero.
After some comment from Mrs. Sheffield about a smile on his banana, Niles managed to take back his resignation while carrying an armload of sundae toppings toward his room. When asked what he planned to put them on, Niles responded, "I have something in my room." Then he quickly went up the stairs.
CC was prancing around the room as I she couldn’t be still, so Niles decided it was time for another "Taming of the Shrew." He did this masterfully as he made his own personal sundae with CC Babcock as the body of the desert.
Then it was CC’s turn and she knew just where she planned to place the whipped cream…..
When morning finally arrived, neither wanted to move from where they were, wrapped in each other’s arms. They were literally spent. Yet they had that physical contentment that comes with great lovemaking.
Now they both thought about what was next.
To Niles amazement CC didn’t’ care that she would be wearing the same outfit that she had on the previous day. She really didn’t care if the whole world knew about their wonderful night of passion.
This time it was Niles who wanted to go slow. Not because he planned to back away, on the contrary, he just knew that too much too soon might be too much for Ms. Babcock.
He would bide his time and wait for the right moment to ask CC for a fifth time if she would marry him.
Hell, if all else failed he’d just get her pregnant. That wouldn’t be too hard. After all, last night neither had thought about protection…
Contrary to what most people thought, he knew she still had several childbearing years left.
Niles planned to keep the wench well satisfied so she wouldn’t stray and that would give him plenty of opportunities to win the heart of this very special woman…yes he’d have to admit finally, "She is a woman!"
At the same time CC was thinking, "Wow! What a man…and he’s all mine."
When Niles asked her how she was feeling, CC reached for the recorder that had somehow survived the night near the bedside and punched it one last time for Niles. From the recorder came the sounds of her moaning with pleasure from her night with Niles, at one point screaming his name…
Niles took the tape saying with a smile and look of love, "I want this one for the answering machine."
The End
