C.C. walked out the door, Max and Fran went to talk and Niles went up to his room. Little did Fran and Max know what would happen next. "I can't believe Babcock, why did I ever assume that she could love me?" Niles thought.
C.C. had returned home to her apartment. She fiddled with the key, her mind in another place. She opened the door, Chester's barking surprising her. "Not now mutt, mom has a lot on her mind." She said pouring a glass of brandy. She sat down, putting her feet up. "What am I going to do, I don't know what to think or say." C.C. said.
"Fran, you know this is completely your fault, if you hadn't tried to play matchmaker, I'd still have a butler and a business partner." Max said. "It's not my fault that Miss Babcock doesn't love Niles." "Oh yes it is, everything is your fault." "How dare you yell at me Maxwell Sheffield!" Things were not going well for anyone.
Upset, Fran went upstairs and knocked on Niles door. "Niles, sweetie are you in there?" "Please leave me alone, I don't want to talk about it." "Niles let me help you." Fran said. "No please I know you mean well, but I need to be alone." Fran sighed, a frown on her face. "I said that if you interfered, things would get worse." Max said coming up the stairs. "Maxwell, I love Niles, I want him to be happy." "I'll be happy once I've left this mansion." He said opening the door. "Now listen old man, every cloud has a silver lining." "Not this one sir, now if you don't mind, I have a lot of packing to do." "Max, let's go in our room, suddenly I don't feel like doing a great deal." Fran said. The house was now quiet; Niles went down to the kitchen to make a tea. "I think I'll take it outside, I could use some air." Niles thought.
C.C. remained on the couch, locked in a trance. "Bark, bark." Chester, shut up, I'll feed you in a minute." She looked at the clock. "It's only 9 p.m., this night is certainly dragging on." "Bark, bark." "All right you dumb dog, I'll get your damn food!" C.C. said annoyed.
Niles sat on the porch, his head down. "I can't believe all that has happened, Fran finally got the man of her dreams and now she's going to be a mother. And what do I have? Nothing but a broken heart."
"I feel so awful, I really hate my life, it does suck, but how can I truly change things? I guess I can't, it's too late now. Oh God, I need some air!" C.C. locked up and walked along the street. There weren't too many people out, which was quite unusual for the time of night. She walked with her head down when suddenly she bumped into a couple. "Oh I'm so sorry." C.C. said. "Oh that's all right, we weren't paying attention either, my husband and I just celebrated our wedding anniversary." The woman said smiling. "Oh really?" C.C. said. "Yes, Jade and I couldn't be happier and now we're expecting a baby." The man said. "Well that's really nice, congratulations." C.C. said. "Thanks, ma'am are you okay?" The man asked. "Ugh yes, why?" "You look like you've lost your best friend." The woman said. "I have." C.C. said sighing. "That's a shame, best friends are so hard to come by these days. Well good luck, I know things will work out for you." The man said. "Thanks." C.C. said quietly.
She looked back at the couple as they walked hand in hand. A frown appeared on her face, when she suddenly felt a tear run down her cheek. "Oh God, what have I done? Niles, I have to talk to Niles." she said out loud. She hurried back to get the car.
Niles remained on the porch still feeling like a fool. "Why did it turn out this way? Why did I have to fall in love with that woman?" he said. "Why me indeed?" Niles looked up to see C.C. in front of him. "What the hell do you want?" Niles said coldly. "Niles we need to talk." "No we don't, I have nothing else to say to you Babcock, in fact I don't want anything to do with you ever again. Now I'm pretty busy, so you better go, I have a lot of packing to do." Niles said. "Niles I know that you're angry with me." "I'm more than angry with you." "You're hurt aren't you Niles?" C.C. said. He didn't answer. "Niles, please, I really need to talk to you." "What do you have to tell me now, that I'm still a loser, that you're still not interested in me, or that I'm useless, which one is it going to be?" Niles said angrily. "Do you mind if I sit?" C.C. asked. "Yes, but you will anyway." "Listen Niles I..." "Babcock, take your hand off my back." Niles yelled. "Okay, Niles I am so sorry." "I bet you are." "I'm sorry I hurt your feelings." Well isn't that interesting, anyway, I really don't care, so save it. Once I leave here, I won't have to listen to anyone tell me how he or she feels about me. I cannot wait to start my life without you." Niles said heatedly. "Look you are obviously more upset about this than I thought, please let me make this up to you." C.C. said. "No thanks, now if you'll excuse me, I have stuff to do so go home." He went inside and slammed the door.
C.C.'s eyes filled with tears. "I can't leave it like this, I just can't." She opened the front door. "Niles?" "I said go home, you've made it quite obvious that you don't love me, so quit torturing me, move on with your life, I have." Niles said. "All right Niles." C.C. said quietly. She shut the door and sat on the porch. She felt awful about the whole situation; tears flowed down her cheeks, something that you wouldn't expect from C.C. Babcock. "I told you to go home!" Niles yelled startling her. C.C. looked up at him, he could see she'd been crying. "C.C., go home please, I'm not going to tell you again." He slammed the door leaving her out there once more. "Niles listen to me." "Are you deaf? I said go away!" he yelled. Niles went into the kitchen. "She is such a pain." he said irritated. C.C. opened the kitchen door. "Niles, I've made a mistake." "The only mistake you've made is knowing me." "Niles I"ve thought about what you said and you're right, Max and Nanny Fine are married and they are starting a family." "And?" "And I know they belong together and so do we." C.C. said. "Oh please, why don't you quit playing mind games Babcock." "Niles, you're right." "About what?" "I will wonder what might have been and I don't want to be a lonesome elderly woman, I need you Niles." "Well it's too late for that now, my mind is made up, I leave tomorrow." Niles said.
Niles started up the stairs. "Niles wait!" "Goodbye C.C., have a nice life." "Niles, I love you!" C.C. yelled. He stopped lifeless in his tracks. "What did you say?" Niles asked. "I love you Niles, I love you so much." C.C. said. His face had a stunned expression. "Do you still love me Niles?" He looked down unable to make eye contact. "I don't know." He said quietly. "Oh Niles, please tell me you do." "I don't understand this, how can you love me? Only a little while ago, you said that you didn't." "I know what I said Niles, but I was mistaken, when I think about the future, I see a very cold hearted woman, who is all alone in the world and that's not what I want to see. When I see my life without you, it makes me very angry and extremely miserable. I realize that I do have strong feelings for you." "Look, I couldn't bear another broken heart, once was enough." "Niles I don't want to lose you." C.C. said. "I want to believe you, I really do." "Niles I promise not to play games or toy with your emotions anymore." He stared at C.C., her eyes red from crying. "I've never seen you shed tears before." Niles said. "That's because now the tables are turned, I'm the one who's hurting Niles." "Do you really love me C.C.?" "With all of my heart."
Niles walked up to her and took her hands. "You're really serious this time, aren't you?" Niles said. "Yes Niles I am, this hasn't been easy for me, I've never had anyone express their feelings for me before." He smiled at her. "Let's go and take a seat on the porch, all right?" Niles said. "Okay." "So where do we go from here?" Niles asked. "I don't want to resign, do you?" C.C. asked. He contemplated for a moment. "No I don't." A sigh of relief came over her. Niles looked at her, the gentle wind blowing through her golden hair. "You still look awfully depressed." Niles said. "I can't help it, it upsets me to believe that I almost lost you." Tears returned to her eyes. "Don't cry sweetheart, I'm not going away." A tiny smile appeared on her face. "Niles I..." "What is it C.C.?" "I don't know what to say." "Then don't say anything." He took her hands into his and held them firmly. They gazed into each other's blue eyes. Niles moved nearer to her, running his hand down her face. Then located his hand on her chin guiding her towards him. C.C. closed her eyes to experience Niles soft mouth upon hers. A rush of excitement flowed through her. He looked at C.C., a large grin on his face. "Let's go inside, okay honey?" Niles whispered. "Yes Niles." He reached for her hand and she followed him.
He guided her up the stairs to his bedroom. Niles opened the door trying not to disturb Max or Fran. He closed it, leaning adjacent to it. C.C. stood there, suddenly feeling very anxious. "You look a little concerned, are you all right?" Niles asked. "I'm fine." C.C. said nervously. "You have nothing to be anxious about, believe me." Niles said walking towards her. C.C. stared at Niles as he removed his blazer and loosened his tie. "There, that's better." He said. She stood there admiring him. He stood in front of her, slipping her red blazer off of her, revealing her black tank top. She was close to him; he brought her hands to the buttons on his shirt. As she undid each one, Niles kissed C.C.'s neck rather tenderly. She ran her hands over his well-developed chest. He lifted her tank top off of her; she stood there looking into his stunning blue eyes. He pressed his mouth firmly against hers, guiding her towards the duoble bed. He laid her down, removing the rest of her clothing, kissing her very intensely and fervently. "You're so beautiful darling, I really do love you." "I love you Niles." And they became one.
And that concludes my version of The Dummy Twins. We all know what happened when Max and Fran discovered them in bed.
