Maxwell Sheffield is sitting in his office looking over a stack of scripts trying to decide which play he would be producing next. Also in the office is C.C. Babcock, his business partner. C.C. is trying to get Maxwell’s attention, "Maxwell, what do you say we take a break from all this and get away for the weekend?" Maxwell looks up from the current script and says " I don’t think that is a good idea C.C. I’m still not comfortable leaving the nanny alone with the children."
C.C. is frustrated with Maxwell. She has been trying to capture Maxwell’s heart since the death of his wife Sarah almost a year and a half ago.
"You know Grace hasn’t adjusted to this nanny very well and Brighton is still trying to find a way to drive her away." "No, no, C.C., this is not a good time for me to leave the children."
Once again Maxwell has rebuffed C.C.’s attempt to seduce him. C.C. leaves the office in a huff. At the same time, Jayne Osborne, the nanny, enters Maxwell’s office. "Good afternoon Mr. Sheffield." " Good afternoon Miss Osborne. What can I do for you?" asks Maxwell abruptly. "Mr. Sheffield, I wanted to talk to you about Grace."
Yes, what about Grace?" "Well, I have been thinking that Grace might do better if she attended a preschool. You know get her to interact with other children, it might draw her out of her imaginary world."
"Well," Maxwell hesitates. "I am not sure that is a good idea." "I have checked some places and I think I found one that would be perfect for her. It is called Loving Arms Preschool." I am going to leave you their brochure, read it over and let me know your decision." Nanny Osborne places the papers on his desk and exits the office.
Maxwell sat back in his chair and thinks about what Miss Osborne has just said. Would this really help Grace, could it be what she needs? Since Sarah’s death he has had a very difficult time dealing with the children. He knows he should be more attentive to them but just is unsure how to achieve that goal.
Maxwell picks up the brochure and starts to read it. It did look like a very nice place and who was this gorgeous brunette in some of the pictures? She has such a beautiful face and those warm chocolate brown eyes captivated his attention. Maxwell stopped reading and chastised himself; he should be concentrating on his daughter not about the women in the pictures. Maybe this would be good for Grace. Yes, he would let Miss Osborne enroll Grace in this school.
Francine Fine walks into the Loving Arms Preschool anticipating another wonderful day. Fran loved working with children. They seemed to respond to her and she in turn responded to them. She felt as if she had finally found her niche in life.
As Fran placed her lunch into the refrigerator in the staff lounge she noticed a young blond woman and an adorable brunette toddler in the director’s office. Marion Jefferies, director of Loving Arms had a concerned look on her face.
Fran turned away from the office and focused on the 5 toddlers that were waiting for her in her classroom. Fran entered the classroom with her arms spread wide and announced, "Good morning, everyone."
"Fran," the kids exclaimed and rushed to her side. Fran takes a seat and one by one each child is allowed on to her lap for a morning hug and kiss. As she is hugging the last child, Mrs. Jefferies enters the classroom. She is holding the small hand of the toddler that Fran has seen earlier, followed by the blonde woman.
"Good morning Fran, I would like you to meet Grace Sheffield." Fran drops to her knees and says, "I am so happy to have you here today, Grace." Grace turns her head and tries to hide behind Mrs. Jefferies.
In a quiet voice Mrs. Jefferies explains to Fran that Grace is 3 years old and this is the first time she had been away from her family and that Fran will have to have a lot of patience with her. She then added that Grace had been very withdrawn since the death of her mother some 18 months before.
At hearing this, Fran’s eyes teared up. She slowly reached for Grace’s hand. This precious child to lose her mother so young just broke Fran’s heart.
Very quietly Fran whispers to Grace, " I think today you will be my very special helper." Grace slowly looks into Fran’s eyes and a small grin starts to form on her lips. Grace grasps Fran’s hand and shakes her head in an affirmative nod.
Nanny Osborne lets out a sigh of relief and smiles warmly at Fran. She introduces herself to Fran and says to her, "Thank you so much. If you have any problems do not hesitate to contact me at any time." Fran responds, "I am sure we will have a wonderful time together, won’t we Gracie?" Grace nods her head and gives Fran a big smile.
As the weeks went by, Fran and Grace started developing a wonderful relationship. Grace started participating in the class more and was becoming more sociable with the other children but still spent a great deal of time at Fran’s side.
One morning Fran asked Miss Osborne how Gracie’s behavior and demeanor was at home. Miss Osborne reported that Grace had become more talkative and loving with her family. Fran wanted to meet Gracie’s father, but so far the only person she ever saw dropping off or picking up Gracie was Miss Osborne. Fran hoped that the up coming parent’s night would give her the opportunity to meet the rest of the Sheffield family.
Parent’s night arrived and Fran found herself oddly anxious. She had never felt this way before for previous parent nights. "Come on Fran it is just another meet and greet," she said out loud as she checked out the classroom for the final time.
The parents started arriving and Fran greeted them all at the door. "Welcome, feel free to look around and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask me." Fran suddenly felt a tiny pair of arms hugging her legs. She looked down to see Gracie. "Oh my angel, I am so glad you are here." Fran looked around hoping to see Mr. Sheffield, but all she saw was Miss Osborne and two adorable blond children.
Fran welcomed Miss Osborne and asked who the two precious children were that accompanied her. "This is Margaret and Brighton. They are Grace’s sister and brother," Miss Osborne answered. "Oh, I am so glad to meet you!" Fran said as she hugged each child. Brighton and Margaret hugged her back tightly. Fran guessed that they were as starved for loving and attention as she had found Gracie.
Fran asked if Mr. Sheffield would be attending. Miss Osborne replied, " if he can get away from the theatre in time." "Well, in the mean time, Maggie and B would you like to help me serve the punch and cookies to our guests?" Margaret and Brighton were very eager to help.
Maxwell wearily climbed into his limo, looking forward to going home and relaxing. "Sir, will you be attending parent’s night at Miss Grace’s school?" asked Maxwell’s butler, Niles. "Oh, bloody hell, I had forgotten about that. I really should make an appearance." "Very well sir we should arrive shortly."
Maxwell cautiously approached the classroom. Grace spied Maxwell as he entered the doorway. "Daddy!" she exclaimed. Fran immediately turned towards the door and looked straight into the most beautiful olive green eyes she had ever seen. At the same moment Maxwell looked in her chocolate brown eyes and they both found it hard to look away.
Fran was the first to break her gaze. She extended her hand and said, "Mr. Sheffield, I am so glad you were able to join us. I am Fran Fine." As Maxwell grasped her tiny hand, both felt the electricity that flowed through them. "Ah, um, yes Miss Fine it is good to meet you." The pictures in the brochure did not do justice to her beauty. Her eyes, her porcelain skin, her lips, her………. Maxwell gave himself a mental shake. ‘Good God man, get a hold of yourself’.
Fran turned to Gracie and asked her if she wanted to show her daddy the pictures she had painted. Maxwell leaned down to pick up Grace and gave her a big hug. "Hello sweetheart. I would love to see your paintings." Grace led him over to the bulletin board and pointed out her artwork.
Fran wanted to spend more time talking to Mr. Sheffield, but knew she must mingle around the room with her other parents. Maxwell tried to keep his attention on what Grace was showing him, but his gaze kept returning to Fran. Grace finally led Maxwell over to the cookies and punch table where Maxwell was surprised to see his other two children serving and talking to the other students and parents. "Children?" "Hi Daddy," said his normally shy daughter Margaret. "Fran asked us to help. She is so cool, Dad." "Yeah Dad, she is so cool," added his son.
Maxwell was in shock. How could one woman work such miracles on his children in a few short hours? He knew the great strides that Grace was making, but had associated that with being around other children her own age. How could he explain the change in Margaret and Brighton? Maybe he needed to talk to Miss Fine in more depth.
As the evening drew to a close, Fran thanked all her parents for attending and let them know that she was available to them any afternoon from 1 to 3 pm. Parents slowly started to make their exit. Fran saw that Mr. Sheffield and Miss Osborne were watching his children as they started to clean up the punch and cookies. She made her way over to them.
"Kids, kids, you don’t need to clean that up. I will take care of it. I am sure your father is ready to take you home." "Aw, Fran we want to help," Brighton whined. "Brighton, I am afraid it is getting rather late and you do need to get home," explained Maxwell. The three kids hung their heads. Fran hugged each child and thanked them for all their help. She turned to Maxwell and thanked him for attending. Maxwell wanted to spend more time talking, but knew he had to get the children home.
As Miss Osborne and he walked the children out of the school, Maxwell turned to his nanny and said, "Miss Osborne please make sure the children get to bed on time, I am afraid I have a few things to take care of before I can return home." "Yes sir, I will see to everything." Maxwell kissed his children and helped them into the town car. The children waved as the car drove out of the parking lot.
Maxwell turned back towards the school. What was he doing? He hadn’t felt this way about a woman since his wife’s death. Quickly he made his way back into the school. As he entered Fran’s classroom, he felt a mixture of relief and anxiousness. "Excuse me Miss Fine, would you like s a little help?" Startled Fran turned and gasp, "Oh, Mr. Sheffield you gave me a fright." "I am sorry. I didn’t mean to frighten you." "No problem, and yes I would love to have some help."
Maxwell and Fran made quick work of the cleaning. Soon they found themselves standing in the middle of the classroom looking at each other. Maxwell was trying not to stare, but just couldn’t help himself. She just had a pull over him that he couldn’t explain. Fran felt the same pull and also had no explanation.
"Mr. Sheffield I really would like to talk to you about Gracie." "Yes, Miss Fine I would like that also. I can’t believe the changes I have seen her." Maxwell decided to take a chance, "Would you care to join me for a drink or a cup of coffee?" "A cup of coffee sounds wonderful." After a short discussion they decided that Maxwell would follow Fran to nearby diner.
Sitting in the back of his limo Maxwell had time to reflect on his actions. ‘What am I doing? I’m not ready for this. I haven’t dated in years. Date! Where did that come from? This isn’t a date, this is just a teacher and a parent discussing a child!’
After spending a few hours taking with Fran, Maxwell could see why his children and he himself were so drawn to this woman. She is such a caring person that she makes anyone in her presence feel safe and secure. She had him talking about feelings that he hadn’t ever revealed to anyone.
Driving home, Fran thought about the past few hours. Maxwell Sheffield was a man with a lot of pain, but also a lot of love to give. He just didn’t know how to show that side of himself to those around him that cared deeply for him. She knew that she could fall for him if she allowed herself to and if she could get past all the guilt he carried around in his heart. She would be willing to help him if he asked. "Now why would he ask me? He doesn’t even know me."
The school year was drawing to a close. Fran always hated the final days of school. She missed her kids during the summer and this year was going to be even harder. She and Gracie had formed a special and close relationship. Fran had also formed a wonderful friendship with Maggie and B. They would come with Miss Osborne to the school whenever possible. She had only seen Mr. Sheffield twice since the night they had coffee together. Each meeting she felt a connection to the man and wondered if he felt it too.
With only one day of school left Miss Osborne received terrible news. Her mother had been involved in a major car accident. Her injuries were serious and she was going to need help as she recovered.
Maxwell was in the room when Miss Osborne received her devastating news. "What can I do to help Miss Osborne?" I am afraid I am going to have to go to Pennsylvania to be with my mother. I hate having to take this time off with summer vacation starting for the children," Miss Osborne said. "Don’t you worry about that, you take all the time you need. We will find someone to fill in while you are away," Maxwell said reassuringly.
"Dad why don’t you ask Fran if she can do it?" asked Brighton. "Yeah, daddy we really like her and she already knows us," added Margaret. "Children I am sure Miss Fine already has plans for her summer vacation." "Please, daddy. What harm could it do to just ask?"
Maxwell mulls over the idea. What harm could it do he asked himself. The children just didn’t understand, everytime he was around her he struggled with feelings he hadn’t felt for over 2 years now. Could he be around her day after day and keep his feelings from her? Yes! He was a grown man, not some out of control, hormone raging, teenager.
The next day Maxwell went to pick up Grace from school. Miss Osborne had left that morning. Maxwell arrived early and went to talk to Mrs. Jefferies. He wanted to make sure Fran wasn’t teaching summer school and to see if the preschool had any policy against the type of situation he was hoping to propose to Miss Fine.
"No, Mr. Sheffield, I don’t see any problem, but truthfully it is up to Miss Fine. I can’t speak for her. I have no knowledge of her summer plans," Mrs Jefferies explained to Mr. Sheffield. "I will have Miss Fine come into the office as soon as her students have been picked up." "Thank you Mrs. Jefferies," Maxwell replied.
Fran was busy saying goodbye to her students, when Mrs. Jefferies’ voice came over the intercom. "Miss Fine when your students have left would you please bring Grace Sheffield to my office?" "Sure, we will be in shortly," Fran said. Hmm… I wonder what this is all about Fran thought to herself.
"Come on Gracie angel, let’s go see Mrs. Jefferies." Fran grasp Gracie by the hand and walked towards the office. As she turned the corner she saw Maxwell. She stopped for a minute to get her breathing under control. Why did just the sight of this man send her emotions into over drive?
Maxwell stood as Fran and Grace entered the office. Shaking Fran’s hand, "Thank you for meeting me here." "It is my pleasure, Mr. Sheffield. Is there a problem?" Fran asked.
"Well, you could say that. I have a favor to ask of you, and I want to make it clear that you are under no obligation to help," Maxwell explained. "Mr. Sheffield I will help you if I am able to," Fran replied.
Maxwell went on to explain the situation with Miss Osborne and how the children had asked for Fran to be the one to step in and help take care of them. Fran was shocked needless to say. "Mr. Sheffield, I really don’t know what to say. I am flattered that the children asked for me and that you feel comfortable having me care for your children. May I have some time to think this over?" Fran asked.
"Of course, would the weekend be enough time? I would like to know by Sunday night." "Yes, I think that will be plenty of time," Fran answered. "Remember you are under no obligation to accept this offer and I will make sure you are compensated for your time." Maxwell handed her his business card, "My cell phone number is listed here. Please call me Sunday evening with your decision."
Fran shook Maxwell’s hand. They stared into each other’s eyes. Neither wanting to be the first to look away. Finally, Maxwell turned to Grace and asked if she was ready to go home. As the two of them walked out of the office Fran thought to herself, ‘what am I going to do about this’?
Maxwell felt as if the weekend had drug out forever. It was Sunday evening and he was anxiously waiting for Miss Fine’s phone call. He was undetermined in how he wanted the outcome of her phone call to be. On one hand he hoped she would accept and he would be able to get to know her better, but on the other hand he couldn’t shake the feeling of unfaithfulness to Sarah.
Across town Fran was pacing in her parent’s apartment. She had moved in over a year ago after breaking up with her long time boyfriend Danny. She wrestled with her decision all weekend. Going back and forth between accepting and declining. She was attracted to Mr. Sheffield and would really like to explore the possibilities, but she wasn’t sure if he was ready for a relationship. Was she setting herself up for heartbreak? Finally she decided she would accept. "Better to have loved and lost, then to never have loved at all," she said out loud as she picked up the phone.
Maxwell was startled when his cell phone finally rang. He had been anticipating this all weekend and now suddenly he didn’t want to answer his phone. Taking a deep breath he answered the phone, "Maxwell Sheffield." "Mr. Sheffield, this is Fran Fine." "Yes. Miss Fine I have been expecting your call."
"Have you made a decision Miss Fine?" Maxwell inquired. "Yes, Mr. Sheffield. I have decided that I would be happy to fill in for your nanny." Maxwell released the breath that he had been unaware he was holding. "Very well Miss Fine, we shall expect you in the morning."
As Fran hung up the phone a feeling of uneasiness came over her. She couldn’t quite figure out how to read Mr. Sheffield’s reaction to her decision. Was he relieved that she would be there or was he disappointed that she would.
Maxwell was still holding his phone trying to digest what was about to transpire in his life. He left his office to inform the children that Miss Fine would be there in the morning. He was still wrestling with his emotions as the children were shouting happily around him.
Fran spent the rest of the evening packing. "Frannie, why would you want to spend your summer babysitting, when you are around little kids all the rest of the year?" asked Fran’s mother Sylvia. "Ma, I am not babysitting. I am doing a friend a favor. I think I can make a difference in this family. I can’t explain it but I just know this is the right thing to do." "I still think you are a schmegegi, Fran." With that said Sylvia left Fran to her packing.
Niles knocked on the door to Maxwell’s office. "Sir I was wondering if would care for a drink?" "Yes old man, that would be nice," Maxwell replied. Niles poured the amber liquid into a glass. Handing the glass to Maxwell, Niles inquired, "Sir, is something troubling you?"
"Yes, Niles. I do have some things on my mind, but I think I have to work this out for myself." "Very well sir, but I am always available to help." "Thank you Niles, You have truly been a good friend all of these years. If I can’t figure this out I may take you up on that offer," Maxwell said. "My pleasure sir. If there is nothing else I will bid you good night." "Good night Niles."
Maxwell tossed and turned for hours. How did I let myself get in this situation? Maxwell asked himself. She is so attractive. All I can see when I close my eyes are those beautiful brown eyes, that silky brown hair, those full lips. I wonder what it would feel like to kiss those lips, to run my hands through her hair, to hold her close to me. With every thought Maxwell felt a stirring in his body that he hadn’t felt for a very long time. "Oh, dear Lord please give me the strength to get through this," Maxwell moaned out loud in the darkness.
The next morning found the Sheffield children up early. They could hardly contain their excitement enough to eat their breakfast. Maxwell looked at his children and tried to remember the last time he had seen his children this happy and animated. It was when their mother was alive. Maxwell thinks to himself, ‘Oh Sarah am I doing the right thing. I miss you so much. I’m slowly making my way along life’s road completely lost. Is Miss Fine the one to give me direction and purpose again to my life’?
"Sir?" "Yes Niles." "I just wanted to tell you that I believe that having Miss Fine fill in while Nanny Osborne is away is one of the best ideas you’ve had lately." Niles continued, "From what I hear from the children she seems to be a very warm and caring person, just what this family needs." "Do you really think so Niles?" Maxwell asked. "Yes sir, I do. I already see the darkness, that has engulfed this home for far too long, starting to lift." Maxwell couldn’t find the words to express just how much it meant to him that Niles had told him that. Maxwell stood up from the table, walked towards Niles; he grabbed his hand in a firm grasp. Just then the doorbell rang. Niles nodded to Maxwell to let him know he understood what couldn’t be voiced.
"Let me get the door, sir." Niles turned to leave the dining room. As he entered the living room he said a silent prayer. ‘Please, by opening this door, let enter the person who will turn the four people I love the most in this world, back into the family I remember’.
"Hi, I’m Fran Fine," Fran greeted Niles. "Good morning Miss Fine. We have been expecting you. If you will have a seat, I will let Mr. Sheffield know you are here."
Niles left to tell Maxwell that Miss Fine had arrived. Fran stood in the living room looking around wide-eyed. "Oy, a girl could get used to living like this," Fran said out loud.
Fran’s attention was quickly averted from the living room to the thunderous footsteps on the stairs. Three young voices yelling her name at the same time brought a huge smile to her face. "My angels. I am so glad to see you."
Maxwell stepped out of his office and was about to enter the living room when he pulled up short and stared at the sight of his children all hugging Miss Fine. He couldn’t help but smile. A warm calm feeling settled over him. ‘Sarah are you giving me your blessing’? Maxwell thought to himself. Tears came to his eyes. Fran looked up to see Maxwell standing in the doorway. Their eyes met. Fran noticed his misty eyes and gave him a small nod and a smile to let him know she understood. Maxwell could only stare. How does she do that? It is like she can read my thoughts and feels what I am feeling.
Brighton looked up and saw his dad. "Fran’s here, Dad." "Yes son I see that," Maxwell laughed. "Welcome Miss Fine." "Thank you Mr. Sheffield."
They all sat in the living room talking. Trying to put Fran at ease, he offered her the opportunity to ask any questions she might have for him. They sat for a couple of hours just taking advantage of the time to talk and get comfortable being together. Maxwell finally asked if she was ready to get settled in her room.
Fran stood up and said yes she was. She needed help bringing her luggage into the house from her car. Niles and the children helped her take her belongings up to her room. "Children, I think we need to let Miss Fine get unpacked and settled in her room. Why don’t you go downstairs and watch a movie," Niles suggested. "Aww, Niles," they responded. "That’s okay Niles, I can always use 3 extra pairs of hands helping me," Fran said as she picked up Gracie and hugged her.
"Very well, Miss Fine if you are sure." Fran gave a nod of her head. "When you finish I will have a snack ready for you in the kitchen."
"That sounds wonderful. I think I will be ready for a light nosh when we finish." "A nosh, Miss Fine?" Niles inquired. "Oy, that’s right you all don’t know Yiddish. A nosh means a light snack," Fran explained. Niles smiled and left the room.
"Yiddish? What is that?" Margaret asked. "Well, Maggie, Yiddish is a language spoken by Jews," Fran answered. "Come on the sooner we start the sooner we can get to that nosh." The kids smiled and started unpacking. Soon everything was put away.
"How about you give me a tour of the house and then we go see what Niles has prepared for us?" "Okay," all three replied.
After showing Fran their rooms and around downstairs they ended the tour in the kitchen. Niles had prepared a fruit and cheese tray. They sat at the kitchen table snacking and deciding what they wanted to do this summer. Niles quietly went about his duties smiling to himself at the happy scene in his kitchen. He lifted his eyes skyward and mouthed a silent thank you.
Maxwell entered the kitchen. He walked over to the table and grabbed an apple slice. "So Miss Fine all settled in?" "Yes, thanks to all my helpers." The children smiled at Fran. "We were making plans to go to the park this afternoon. Would you care to join us?" Fran asked.
Maxwell looked at the anxious faces of his children. He couldn’t say no to those faces. "You know Miss Fine that sounds like a wonderful idea. I think we would all enjoy that very much." The kids gave a cheer. "Then what are we waiting for, lets go," Fran said with a smile.
After spending an enjoyable day in the park, everyone was ready for a quiet evening. When supper ended, Fran took the children upstairs to bathe and get their pajamas on. Everyone met in the living room to watch a movie.
Niles had prepared popcorn and juice for everyone. The children settled on the floor and persuaded Fran to lay with them. Maxwell sat on the sofa. Halfway through the movie, the children started to drift off to sleep. "I think it is time to get these three angels to bed," Fran stated. Fran gently woke Maggie and Brighton and told them to head up to bed. She bent down to pick up Gracie. "Here, Miss Fine, let me get her," Maxwell said.
Fran took the other two by the hand and started up the stairs. She tucked Brighton into bed and kissed his forehead. "Good night Fran. I am so glad you are here," Brighton said sleepily. "Me too, B." Fran then went into Maggie’s room and kissed her good night. "Sleep well, sweetheart."
Maxwell and Fran met in the doorway to Grace’s room. "Grace didn’t wake up when I put her in her bed," Maxwell told Fran. "Let me go in and kiss her good night anyway." Fran walked over to the sleeping child. Sitting on the edge of the bed Fran leaned over and kissed Gracie’s cheek. "Good night my angel." Wiping away tears Maxwell turned and went to tell his other two children good night.
Fran headed down the back stairs to get a cup of tea before turning in for the night. "Oh, Niles, I didn’t realize you were still up." "Just cleaning up the living room and finishing the dishes. May I get you anything Miss Fine?" "I just came down to fix myself a cup of tea." "Have a seat. Let me get your tea. How about a slice of cake to go with it?"
Fran smiled, "That would be wonderful. "You know Niles I think you and I will be very good friends. You already know the way to my heart. " Setting a cup of tea and a plate in front of Fran, Niles asked, "May I get you anything else, Miss Fine?" "Care to sit and join me?
Niles and Fran sat talking and getting to know each other. Finally they said good night and went up the stairs.
Niles had given Fran a lot to think about. He told her how withdrawn Maxwell had become since the death of his wife. How today was the first time since losing Sarah that he had spent any quality time with his children. He also said that the children hadn’t look this happy in that time either. "What magic spell have you cast over this family?" "Oh Niles, it isn’t magic it is just putting a father with his children and showing them that they can still be a family." "Whatever it is, I am glad to see them all smiling again."
"Can I do this? I find him so attractive but he is so emotionally farmisht," Fran thought to herself. Her last thought before drifting off to sleep was that this could be either the best summer of her life or the worst.
Maxwell woke feeling like he hadn’t slept at all. Troubling dreams had disturbed his sleep. He dreamed of Sarah and the children and how happy they all were together. But when he would go to kiss Sarah he would see Miss Fine’s face.
He stepped into the shower still analyzing his dreams. Was he ready to get on with his life? Was Miss Fine the person who he could start a new relationship with?
The next few weeks flew by. Fran and the children spent everyday going to parks, museums, shopping and the beach. The children were becoming very attached to Fran. They could talk to her about everything. Especially how much they missed their mother.
Maxwell tried to spend more time with the children. He was busy getting his new play opened. So his time was limited, but he was able to join them on a few of their adventures. Maxwell also enjoyed the time he got to spend with Miss Fine.
Fran was enjoying this summer more than she thought she would. Her growing love for the children was an added bonus to the summer. But, she was becoming concerned with her was her growing attraction to Mr. Sheffield. She found him so easy to talk to. But she knew there were a lot of obstacles still in their path.
There seemed so many reasons that this relationship wouldn’t work, they came from two different worlds, he was blue blood she was blue collar. One other apprehension she had was the relationship between Mr. Sheffield and his business partner, C.C. Babcock. She could see how hard Ms. Babcock tried to get Mr. Sheffield to notice her as more than just his business partner. Fran didn’t think the attraction was mutual, but it was so hard to tell, he kept his emotions very much to himself.
Fran was sitting in the kitchen with Niles enjoying a cup of tea. The children had gone to spend the weekend with Sarah’s parents. "Maybe I should use this weekend to go home for a few days," Fran said to Niles. "But I really don’t feel like being alone. My parents have gone to Boca to visit my Uncle Jack."
"Miss Fine stay here. I know Mr. Sheffield won’t mind," Niles said with a gleam in his eye. "Are you sure, Niles?" "Of course Miss Fine."
C.C. walked into the kitchen, "Get me some coffee, Rubbermaid." "Why are you hanging around Nanny Fine? The children are gone for the weekend." "First, I am not the nanny, Ms. Babcock. Second I am here because I want to be here." "Well, I hope you don’t plan on Maxwell spending time with you this weekend. I plan on keeping him very busy."
While Fran and C.C. were having their conversation, Niles was filling C.C.’s coffee cup with coffee and dishwater. "Busy Ms. Babcock? Doing what? Bailing you out of jail? Niles winked at Fran. Fran suppressed a smile.
"No! I am going to invite him to spend the weekend with me in the Hamptons. We need some time together alone."
"She’s an expert at the alone part," Niles remarked to Fran. "Niles, be nice," Fran replied. "Yeah Butler Boy be nice or I will have you thrown out on your big butt." With that said C.C. turned to leave the kitchen.
"Takes one to know one," Niles says while pointing to C.C.’s retreating backside. "Niles why are you so mean to her?" "Mean? I’m not mean. This is how we have always been to each other. It’s a hobby now," Niles said with a big grin.
Fran looked at him with a look of amazement. "You mean to tell me this is how you flirt with her?" Now it was Niles turn to be amazed. How did she know? Nobody knew how he felt about Ms. Babcock. At that moment Maxwell came down the back stairs and into the kitchen.
"Niles, Miss Fine," Maxwell said in greeting. "Sir, can I get you anything?" "No old man I am just going to pop into my office for a few hours and see if I can get some last minute things cleared up. I thought I would take advantage of having a few hours alone."
"Ms. Babcock is in there," Fran interjected. "I think she has other plans for you," Fran gives Niles a wink. "Bloody hell, I am not in the mood to fend off her advances today."
"Why don’t you sneak out of the house? Miss Fine is free. You two could go to a movie or something," Niles suggested. "Niles!" Fran glared at him. "You know Niles that sounds like a great idea. Care to join me Miss Fine?"
"Well… Um…. I…. sure Mr. Sheffield. Just let me run upstairs and change." "No, you look wonderful Miss Fine. If you don’t hurry Ms. Babcock might find out about your plans and change them," Niles said quickly.
Fran looked at Niles and then to Mr. Sheffield. "Well I guess I am ready to go."
Maxwell grabbed Fran’s hand and headed out the back door. Just as they closed the door they heard C.C. enter the kitchen. "Niles, did I hear Maxwell’s voice?" Fran started to giggle, "Boy I would hate to be Niles right now." Maxwell looked at her and started to laugh, "Me too!"
Maxwell and Fran made a dash for the garage. Maxwell helped Fran into the car, and then entered the car himself. They were still laughing as he backed out of the garage.
Meanwhile back in the kitchen, "Yes, Ms. Babcock, you just missed him. He had to go out." "Did he say where he was going and how long he would be gone?" "No, he and Miss Fine didn’t give me the details of their date." "WHAT! DATE?" Niles just stood there smiling. "How could he date someone like that? She isn’t of our class. Maxwell belongs with someone like me," C.C. cried.
"Oh, come on Babcock, you have know him for years now and he has never seen you as anything but a friend and business partner." "Niles, what is wrong with me. Why can’t I ever have the love life I’ve been seeking?"
"Maybe you’ve been looking in all the wrong places," Niles answered handing her his handkerchief. "What do you say to me making us a terrific lunch and we watch TV together?" "Me and you? Why would I want to do that?" Niles took hold of C.C.’s arm, turned her to face him. Placing his finger under her chin he lifted her face so he could look directly into her eyes. "Because I just might be the right place to look."
C.C. stared at Niles, the next thing she knew his lips were on hers. Never before had she felt anything so soft and comforting. When the shock wore off she realized that she was returning as much as he gave.
Breaking the kiss Niles looked at her and asked, "So, you ready to take me up on my offer?" "You know Niles, I think I am."
Maxwell and Fran drove along silently. Maxwell glanced over at Fran. She looked deep in thought. "Penny for you thoughts, Miss Fine."
His voice startled her. Maxwell saw her flinch. "I’m sorry Miss Fine. I didn’t mean to frighten you." "That’s alright Mr. Sheffield. I was just thinking how different this day has turned out." This statement caused Maxwell’s stomach to drop. Was she upset? Did she think he was forcing her to spend time with him? "Oh, how so?’
"Just a little bit ago I was wondering what to do this weekend and here I am in a fancy-schmancy sports car with a big macher Broadway producer," Fran said with a laugh.
Maxwell laughed as well. "Macher? What does that mean? Or do I really want to know?" "Macher means a big shot, a man with connections." Maxwell smiled at her and shook his head. Thinking to himself, ‘She never ceases to amaze me. The more time I spend with her the more I see just what a caring and loving person she is’.
Noticing that Maxwell was deep in thought, Fran asked, "So, where are ya taking me?" Fran’s voice broke through his thoughts. "I really don’t have any particular place in mind. Do you have any suggestions?"
"Niles did mention a movie, but I think it is too nice of a day to spend it indoors. I’d rather go to a movie at night. Would you mind just a day in the park?" As soon as she finished speaking Fran wished she could take it back. ‘Oy, now he is going to think I am pressuring him into taking me out to a movie some night’.
"A day in the park? You know that does sound very nice and relaxing." Maxwell drove to the park and found a place to leave the car. He exited and went around to help Fran from the car.
An uncomfortable silence surrounded them as the wondered down the path. Maxwell broke the silence, "Would you care for a cold drink?" "That would be great." "I will find a vender and how about you finding us a place to sit?" "Sure, I can do that."
Maxwell walked over to the food cart a short distance from where they were standing. Fran found a bench under a tree and sat down. She looked at Maxwell and thought to herself, ‘He is so good looking. I could gaze into his eyes for hours. I think we could have something very special, but is he ready for that. I don’t know if I am the one to break through that emotional brick wall he has built around himself’.
Maxwell paid for the drinks. He started back over to the bench. Fran was watching a young couple walking hand in hand down a path. Maxwell saw the wistful expression on Fran’s face. ‘She looks so sad, I wonder if she is thinking someone right now. She has never mentioned a boyfriend, and she hadn’t asked for time off to go out’. The thought of her dating someone left a cold spot in Maxwell’s gut.
"Here Miss Fine." "Oh! Thank you Mr. Sheffield." Neither one wanted to be the first to break the silence, so they sat, slowly sipping their drinks. Each had questions they were dying to ask but each too afraid to ask.
Fran couldn’t stand the silence any longer and decided to take a chance. Setting her drink on the ground she turned towards Maxwell, "Mr. Sheffield tell me about Sarah. I know some from the kids. I know she was a wonderful mother. Everyone can see that in your kids. But, I want to know what kind of person she was."
Maxwell was taken back by her inquiry. He hadn’t talked about Sarah in depth to anyone since her death. He wasn’t sure he could do it now.
"You don’t have to tell me, Mr. Sheffield. You can tell me to mind my own business. I will understand. You don’t know me very well and I can be such a Yenta at times. Before you ask a Yenta is a busybody, a nosy person, " Fran said with a chuckle.
Maxwell gave a light laugh. Still he wasn’t sure he was strong enough to do what she was asking of him.
Sensing his reluctance Fran said, "I am going to say something now and I hope I don’t upset you. You can tell me to stop at any time. I know we aren’t close friends but I can see the struggle you go through everyday. I feel that you have so much hurt inside and it is slowly eating away at your body and soul. I also see the love you have for your kids. I know you want to be a caring and loving father but you are unsure of how to be one. "
Fran paused. Taking a deep breath she reached out and laid her hand on Maxwell’s knee. "Mr. Sheffield, sometimes talking about the feelings we have buried deep inside make them easier to live with. And even though I tend to talk a lot, I really am a good listener."
Maxwell placed his hand on top of Fran’s that was resting on his knee. "Perhaps you are right, Miss Fine," Maxwell said in a voice choked with emotion. Maxwell took a minute and set his drink down. "Sarah was wonderful. She was so caring and loving. I don’t think anyone who met her didn’t like her. No one was ever a stranger to her, just friends she had yet to meet. When I met Sarah I knew right away I had found my soul mate and the person I was going to grow old with." Maxwell couldn’t continue. Tears fell slowly down his face.
Fran took her free hand and lightly brushed the tears away. She left her palm lying along his jaw. Her own eyes filled with tears.
To Maxwell’s surprise the light touch of Fran’s hand on his face gave him such comfort and he was able to find his voice again. "When I lost Sarah I felt as if my life had ended also. I just wanted to lock myself away from everyone and everything. Niles made me realize that I couldn’t do that. I had three grieving young children that needed me. I tried to comfort them, but I have failed miserably at it."
"Oh, Mr. Sheffield you haven’t failed. You’ve given all you are able to. It is hard to help someone over their grief if you yourself are grieving. You needed someone to comfort you too!"
Maxwell doubled over as if he were in severe pain. A strangled cry escaped from deep inside him. Fran instinctively reached out and took Maxwell into her arms.
Maxwell raised his head and rested it on Fran’s shoulder. He grasp her around the waist and held her tightly. Fran rubbed his back and murmured gently in his ear, "Go ahead, cry, let out everything you have kept inside so long."
After all of Maxwell’s tears had been shed he lifted his head and looked into Fran’s eyes. He saw such compassion that it threatened to overwhelm him once again. "Miss Fine, please forgive me. I have never lost control of my emotions like that." "There is nothing to forgive Mr. Sheffield. Everyone is entitled to lose control once in a while."
Maxwell realized that they were still holding on to each other. He gently squeezed Fran. "I think you are right Miss Fine. I did need that release. I feel different now. I don’t think I can ever repay for what you have done for me. You are truly special. How can I thank you for all that you have done for me?"
"How about taking a gal to lunch?" Fran answered with a smile. "That I can do. Let’s dispose of these cups and then we can decided where we want to go."
Maxwell gathered the cups and put them in a nearby trashcan. Running his hand over his eyes once more, Maxwell returned to Fran. Extending his hand, Maxwell asked, "Ready to go?" Fran grasp his hand and stood. "You bet!" Maxwell continued holding her hand as they made their way back to the car.
Maxwell found a quiet Bistro not far from the park. "How about here?" "This looks wonderful." For the next couple of hours Fran and Maxwell enjoyed a fine wine, a good meal and an even better conversation. What earlier has been an uncomfortable silence between them was now a free flowing conversation between friends.
Fran found herself telling Maxwell about her relationship with her ex-boyfriend Danny. "I dated him for years. I thought he was the love of my life. But looking back on it now, I don’t think I was ever in love with him. I was comfortable with him. After a few years it was easier to stay with him then to begin a new relationship. Then to make matters worse, all the time he was professing his love for me, he was dating Heather Biblow. I knew then that it would be best for me to finally admit to myself that this relationship was not healthy. So I got out."
"Oh Miss Fine that must have been devastating to you. You are such a wonderful and caring person and to have had someone do that to you is just unthinkable."
"At the time I thought there was something wrong with me. But, now I have come to realize that there was nothing wrong with me, Danny was just a schmuck! I was so busy being in love with love that, I know now I was never really in love with him."
Maxwell had one more question he wanted to ask, needed to ask, but he was afraid to hear the answer. "Is there someone special in your life now Miss Fine?"
Fran’s eyes started to fill with tears and a frown came to her lips. "No, once I got rid of Danny, I decided that I needed to devote some time to learning about me and what I wanted out of a relationship. The next relationship I have I am going to absolutely sure that I am totally and fully in love and that the guy loves me just as much."
Maxwell released the breath he wasn’t even aware he had been holding. Relief flooded his body. "That sounds like a very wise decision, Miss Fine."
"Wise or not, I can tell you that is does get very lonely." "Ah, loneliness I understand all to well, Fran.. um… um.. I mean Miss Fine."
Conversation stopped abruptly between Fran and Maxwell. They stared into each other’s eyes. Fran’s heart starting beating so loud she was sure that Maxwell could hear it. "I am sorry. I shouldn’t be so forward. It is just that I feel so comfortable talking with you. I feel like I am talking to dear and trusted friend."
"I feel the same way. I have told you things about myself that I have never told anyone before. And, just for the record, I really like the way my name sounds when spoken with a British accent, " Fran said with a shy smile.
Then you might just have to hear it more often if that is what it takes to put that beautiful smile back on your face," Maxwell said boldly.
"I think I would like that very much, Mr. Sheffield." "Well, I think I would like to hear my name said with a Queen’s accent. If you feel comfortable with that." "You know Max, I think I would be very comfortable with that."
Maxwell, feeling bolder by the minute, reaches out and takes Fran’s hand. Intertwining his fingers with hers he says, "I think this could be the start of a beautiful friendship." "I do too Max, I do too."
Neither knew what to say next. Maxwell gave Fran’s hand a squeeze and felt her return the sentiment. Maxwell brought her hand to his lips and brushed a soft kiss across her knuckles.
Suddenly feeling shy, Fran said, "Maybe we should go back to the house and see if Niles survived." "I am sure he handled the situation, but to be safe we should check," Maxwell answered smiling.
Maxwell paid the check. He helped Fran up from her chair. Keeping his hand lightly pressed to the small of her back they exited the bistro.
Driving home Maxell kept glancing at Fran. He was thinking of something to say that would allow him to spend more time with Fran today. "Would you care to see a movie later this evening Fran?" "Oh, Max that would be wonderful, but maybe we should leave our plans open till we see how Niles is." "Very well, we have plenty of time to decide," Maxwell answered trying to keep the disappointment out of his voice.
Cautiously they entered the mansion. "Niles? Niles?" Maxwell called out. Receiving no answer, Maxwell tried again louder. "NILES!" "Max, you think he is okay?" "I’m sure he is fine. He is probably upstairs in my Jacuzzi, drinking my brandy and smoking my cigars/" "Ha! I think you could be right about that."
While Maxwell went up the stairs to look for Niles, Fran headed to the kitchen to get a bottle of water. As she approached the refrigerator she noticed a note lying on the counter. She picked it up and read,
Sir,
I have taken the weekend off. I shall return Sunday evening.
Niles
"Fran!" "Max!" Fran met Maxwell at the bottom of the stairs in the kitchen. She had the note from Niles in her hand. "Niles isn’t upstairs, Fran. I wonder where he could be?" "This may answer your question," Fran said handing him the note. Maxwell read the note, his eyes widened. "I wonder where he went? He has never done anything like this before." "Guess you will have to wait till tomorrow night to find out."
"Seems we are on our own Fran." "Yes it does seem that way, "Fran said with a shy smile. "Tell you what, Fran. I need to get a few things taken care of in the office. It shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours. After I finish we can decide what we want to do this evening," Maxwell suggested. "Great, I will run up and take a shower." "If you want you can use the Jacuzzi tub in my room. It is very relaxing." "That sounds heavenly. I think I will take you up on that offer," Fran replied.
"Take your time, enjoy. I will see to my work and meet you in the living room in a couple of hours," Maxwell stated. "Sounds like a good plan to me." Maxwell grasps Fran’s hand and once again placed a gentle kiss on her knuckles. "I am looking forward to this evening, Fran," Maxwell said softly. Feeling a little giddy, Fran placed a soft peck on Maxwell’s cheek. "So am I Max." Fran quickly turned and floated up the stairs.
Maxwell stood in place, watching Fran disappear up the stairs. He placed his hand on his cheek where Fran has just kissed him. He could still feel her soft lips pressing gently on his skin. A smile came to his lips.
The smile faded as his thoughts turned to his late wife. He missed her terribly, the guilt he usually felt when he thought about dating was there, but this time it did not have the same intensity as it normally did.
Maxwell walked to his office. He sat in his green leather chair; his eyes fell on the picture of Sarah that he kept on his desk. Picking up the frame, Maxwell stared into Sarah’s eyes.
"Oh Sarah, am I doing the right thing? It feels so good to smile again. For the first time in two years I am actually looking forward to spending time with another person. I think you would like Fran. Remember, I will always love you, but I think I might have found the person to help me live my life again."
Placing the frame back on his desk, Maxwell reached for and opened the first file from the stack on his desk. He needed to focus on this if he wanted to have his evening free to spend with Fran.
After finally making her way to her room, Fran sat on her bed. "Oh why did I kiss him? I don’t want to scare him off before anything has a chance to start," Fran cried out loud.
Fran stood up and undressed. She put on her purple fuzzy robe and made her way to Maxwell’s room. Opening the door, she stepped in. The scent of Aramis invaded her nostrils. Oh how she loves that scent. She entered the bathroom and started filling the Jacuzzi. She added bubble bath. Stepping into the tub she slowly sinks into the fragrant water.
"I could really come to love this tub," Fran said to herself with a chuckle. Soaking in the tub till the water turned chilly, Fran reluctantly stepped out. Drying herself off, she donned her robe again. Walking out the door and down the hall to her room, Fran was humming and smiling. She really was looking forward to this evening.
Maxwell closed the last folder. Flexing his neck muscles and rubbing his eyes Maxwell sat back in his chair. "Thank goodness that is complete. Now I will pop upstairs for a shower." Maxwell left his office and went upstairs. As he reached the top, he heard music coming from Fran’s room. He smiled. Humming along with the music he entered his room.
Fran took extra care with her makeup and hair. Tonight could be a very special night; she wanted everything to be perfect. Stepping into her closet she selected a beautiful black silk skirt and blouse. She wants to make an impression, but doesn’t want to come on too strong.
Drying himself off, Maxwell took a moment to stare at the Jacuzzi. Picturing Fran lying there, stirred feelings within him that he hadn’t felt in years. Turning around and looking in the mirror, Maxwell smiled. Thinking to himself, ‘this feeling is so much nicer than the sadness and guilt I have felt for all too long now’.
Maxwell finished dressing. Before leaving his room he put on some cologne. He chose the Aramis. Taking one last look in the mirror, Maxwell took a deep breath and said to his reflection, "Well old boy, this is your chance at happiness, don’t let it slip away." He turned away and walked out the door.
Fran made one last stroke with the brush and decided it was time to face whatever awaited her down the stairs. She stood up, smoothed her skirt with her palms and walked towards the door. As she reached for the brass doorknob she took a breath. "This is it, take it slow. Let him set the pace." With that said she left her room.
As Fran walked down the staircase she saw Maxwell pacing in the living room. ‘Oh he looks so handsome’, she thought to herself. Hearing her light footsteps behind him, Maxwell stopped pacing and turned to look in her direction. How beautiful she looks’, he thought. "Fran you look stunning," He said in a hushed voice. With a wide smile forming on her face, Fran replied, "I can say the same about you."
Walking over to meet her, Maxwell reached out and took her hand. "Do you have any idea what you would like to do this evening? Dinner? A Movie? Dancing?" "You know Max I think I will leave the plans for the evening up to you. Whatever you would enjoy doing so would I."
"How about a nice quiet dinner and we will leave the rest of the evening unplanned." "Great, I am ready if you are." Giving her hand a gentle squeeze, Maxwell gave an affirmative nod of his head. He stepped to the front door, "Your limo awaits, fair lady." "Oh Max you sure know how to treat a girl."
They settled into the back seat of the limo. Each one was stealing sideways glances at each other, but neither speaking. Maxwell finally broke the silence, "I thought we would dine at the Rainbow Room and if you feel like it, partake in a little dancing." "That sounds wonderful, Max."
Fran nervously rubbed the fabric of her skirt. Being alone with Max with just a few inches separating them, being able to inhale his scent, was sending her senses into overdrive. She needed to relax. But how? It was so tempting to just reach across those mere inches and place her lips on his.
Sensing her nervousness, Maxwell gathered her hand into his. "Come here," he said gently pulling her to his side. Fran slid into his embrace. Maxwell hugged her gently to his side and rested his head on top of hers. Fran relaxed and let herself snuggle against him and laid her head on his shoulder. Thinking to herself, ‘this is Heaven on Earth’.
"Fran, I don’t know where this is heading, but you have nothing to be afraid of." "I’m not afraid. I trust you Max. I am just don’t want to rush you into anything you aren’t ready for, but most of all I don’t want to lose you."
"Oy, did I just say that? Max I didn’t mean to sound so possessive. I just meant.." "Shh," Maxwell said placing a finger to her lips. "I think I know what you mean. This feels so right and neither of us wants to do anything to make it disappear."
The limo came to a stop in front of the building that housed the restaurant. Maxwell gave Fran a light hug. "Let’s go enjoy our night." He stepped out of the limo then turned to help Fran step out.
The doorman greeted Maxwell by name. Maxwell returned the greeting. He led Fran through the entrance and over to the elevators.
When they stepped out of the elevator that had stopped at the top floor, Fran’s eyes widened in awe. Her mouth formed an "O". Maxwell smiled. He loved that he could take Fran’s breath away just by taking her to dinner.
The Maitre’d hurried over to Maxwell. "Mr. Sheffield it is a pleasure to have you dining with us again." It is good to be here again, Henri. May I present Miss Fran Fine." "I am honored to meet you Miss Fine. If I may be so bold, you are stunning Miss Fine." Fran blushed. "Thank you. That is very kind of you." "We have your table ready, Mr. Sheffield, if you will follow me." Maxwell placed his hand on the small of Fran’s back and followed Henri towards their table.
After being seated at a secluded table, Fran smiled at Maxwell. "I feel like a princess." "Well, you look like a princess and you deserve to be treated like one," Maxwell replied as he gave her hand a gentle squeeze.
The waiter took their order and left the table. Maxwell sat staring at Fran. "Do I have something on my face or lipstick on my teeth?" Fran asked with a laugh. Maxwell chuckled. "No Fran, I am just admiring the view from here. And asking myself what I did to deserve being able to sit here with the most beautiful woman in all of New York." Fran looked down, "Oy Mr. Sheffield you’re embarrassing me."
The waiter returned with the bottle of champagne Maxwell had ordered. Picking up the glass that had been filled for him, Maxwell said, "Here’s to new beginnings and wonderful times in the future." Fran picked up her glass and lightly tapped it against Maxwell’s. "To new friends and new memories," Fran added. Maxwell’s smile grew as he sipped his champagne.
Maxwell and Fran spent the time waiting for their meals enjoying small talk. Each felt how easily the conversation flowed between them. "Max, I want to say something before this night goes any further." Maxwell’s smile dipped slightly. "I just want to thank you. This has been the most wonderful night in my life. No one has ever treated me a wonderfully as you do." With his smile returning Maxwell said, "Fran, this night has been very special to me also. I feel like I am living again. Not just existing. For that I have to thank you."
Both savored their meals. While eating their dessert, the band started playing. "Would you care to dance, Fran?" " I would love too!"
Maxwell led Fran onto the dance floor. Gently he took Fran into his embrace. Fran rested her head on his shoulder. Slowly they began swaying to the music. ‘Yep I was right. This is as close to heaven as it can get here on earth’, Fran thought to herself.
Time ceased to exist as they continued to dance. Neither one wanted to let go of the other. Maxwell’s embrace became tighter the longer they danced. Fran’s head snuggled closer to Maxwell’s neck. He could feel her warm breath lightly against his throat, while her fingers gently caressed the back of his neck.
The band stopped playing. Fran reluctantly raised her head. Looking into Maxwell’s eyes she spoke softly, "I guess we need to leave the dance floor." Maxwell nodded. Leaving his arm around her waist, they walked back to their table.
As the neared the table, Maxwell whispered into Fran’s ear, "Do you want to stay and wait for the band to return, or would you like to continue this at the house?" "Let’s go home."
Maxwell quickly paid the check. Taking Fran around the waist they entered the elevator. As they walked out of the building, the limo rolled to a stop in front of them. Maxwell helped Fran into the car, and then settled himself into the seat beside Fran. He gathered her into his arms.
"Please don’t think me too forward Fran, but I have wanted to do something since early this afternoon." Fran lifted her head and looked at Maxwell. Staring into her warm brown eyes, Maxwell slowly lowered his head till his lips met hers in a tender kiss. Tilting her head, their lips fit together perfectly.
Taking a chance Maxwell deepened the kiss. Feeling Fran parting her lips slightly, Maxwell ran his tongue slowly across her bottom lip. A shiver ran down Fran’s spine. Slowly they parted. Maxwell rested his forehead against Fran’s as the both tried to control their breathing. Neither spoke. No words were needed.
The rest of the ride home was completed in a comfortable silence. They held each other tightly. Exchanging small kisses from time to time.
The limo pulled up to the mansion. Maxwell gave Fran one more kiss, then helped her out of the vehicle. ‘Oy this man can do things to my body with just his lips that no one has ever done before’, Fran thought to herself. She held on to Maxwell to steady her shaking legs.
Arm in arm they walked up the steps to the front door. Maxwell unlocked the door and ushered Fran inside. Stepping into the foyer, Maxwell lightly took Fran’s face between his hands and gave her a quick kiss. "Would you like something to drink? Maybe some more champagne?" "If I drink anymore champagne, I will have to be carried up the stairs." "That’s not such a bad thing, is it?" Fran smiled. "I think a glass of juice would be better."
Why don’t you go change clothes and I will fix us some juice." "Great, I will be back down shortly."
Fran went upstairs. As she entered her bedroom, she caught a glance of herself in the mirror. "Now that is attractive." Her lipstick was smudged and her hair had come loose from the clips she had used to hold it in place.
Maxwell entered the kitchen. He located a small tray and two glasses. Grabbing the pitcher of juice from the refrigerator, he poured the juice into the glasses. He carried the tray into the living room and set it on the coffee table. Noticing that Fran had yet to return, he decided to run upstairs and change also.
He quickly made his way upstairs, changed his clothes and made it back downstairs before Fran. Taking this opportunity, he switched on the stereo, dimmed the lights and waited. Hearing s noise behind him, he turned and saw that his wait had been worth every minute.
Standing on the bottom step stood a vision of loveliness. Fran was wearing a pair of black silk lounging pajamas. Her hair was hanging loosely around her shoulders. If she wore any makeup it was just a light touch. "Oh, Fran you take my breath away. Come here, dance with me." Fran crossed the room and slid into Maxwell’s arms.
Slowly they danced around the room, holding each other as if they both were afraid the other would disappear. "Fran you feel so right, here in my arms," Maxwell whispered just before he took her lips in a deep and passionate kiss. Fran’s self control was slowly ebbing. She knew that she had to stop now or she would allow something to happen that she wasn’t sure either of them was ready for.
Breaking the kiss, Fran stepped back. She could see the desire in Maxwell’s eyes. "Max, as much as I want this to continue, I just don’t think I am ready. I am not sure you are either." She moved to the coffee table and picked up one of the glasses Maxwell has set there. Sitting on the sofa, she took a small drink while she collected her thoughts. "Max I have feelings for you that I have never felt before. I just don’t want to rush into this. This is something that needs to be taken slowly and with lots of thought. Can you understand what I am trying to say?"
Maxwell sat in the chair opposite the sofa. He didn’t trust himself if to sit close to her. "Yes, Fran, I do understand. I am so sorry. I don’t know what came over me. You’re right we are moving fast. I am feeling things that I haven’t felt since Sarah died. I’ve dated a few women since then, but none of them have touched me the way you have. I don’t want to lose this wonderful feeling."
Fran arose from the sofa and sat on the coffee table in front of Max. Taking both his hands in hers, "I ‘m not going anywhere, Max, unless you ask me to go. I just want us both to be sure of what we are doing and that we are doing it for all the right reasons."
"Fran, you are a remarkable woman. I am so glad you came into my life," Maxwell said as he reached to pull Fran into his embrace. "What do we do now?"
"I think we both need some sleep and time to think about where we want this relationship to go," Fran answered.
"Right, let me walk you up to your room." Taking her hand in his, they slowly made their way upstairs. Once they reached her room, Maxwell kissed Fran’s cheek. "Good night, sleep well." "You too, Max."
Fran turned the doorknob and slowly entered her room. Maxwell stayed in place as he watched her enter her room and close the door between them. He turned and walked down the hall to his room.
Turning back the blanket on her bed, Fran’s mind was racing with thoughts. She knew that she must try to sleep. The kids would be returning tomorrow. Lying down, Fran closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths. A smile came to her lips as she thought about what had happened today, and how promising the futures seemed. But was she ready to face that future? Finally she slipped into a restless sleep.
Maxwell sat in the chair by the fireplace in his room. He too, had many thoughts running through his mind. Did I push too hard? Did I read the situation wrong? Am I ready to make a commitment to this wonderful woman? So many questions and he had no answers for any of them.
Rising from the chair, Maxwell lay on his bed. Sleep. ‘I need sleep. The answers will come in time, but right now I just need sleep’ he thought to himself.
Morning came early for Fran. She spent most of the night tossing and turning in her bed. Memories from the day spent with Max raced through her mind. There was a special connection between her and Max. There was no denying that. But, was it enough to start a serious relationship with him?
Oh sure, she would love dating a man like Max. She just wasn’t sure she was the right type of woman for him. He’s a sophisticated, classy man. She was just a shlub from Queens. She couldn’t stand it if they starting dating and things didn’t work out. It would be too hard on the kids. We are from two different worlds, it just isn’t meant to be. She would have to make sure things didn’t escalate beyond them being friends.
Maxwell awoke feeling like the weight of the world had been lifted from his shoulders. The restful sleep had renewed his spirit. He was ready to move on with his life and Fran was just the woman to do that with.
She as different from anyone he had ever met. She lived her life so free, not bound by the restraints of wealth and privilege like he did. Like all the women he associated with did. She was a breath of fresh air in his stale existence. Yes, this was the first day of his new outlook on life. He couldn’t wait to get started.
As Fran showered she thought about what she was going to tell Max. She was determined to stay strong. She would just tell him that she was not ready to start a relationship that involved the well being of so many lives. The kids should be his first priority. Max needed to make sure he had a solid and stable relationship with them before he added anyone else to the situation.
Maxwell was sitting at the kitchen table as Fran descended the stairs. Maxwell stood up. "Good morning Fran." "Good morning Max." Maxwell reached for her hand. Fran deftly sidestepped him. A look of disbelief came to Maxwell’s face. "Max we need to talk." Dread filled Maxwell. "Okay Fran, let’s talk."
"Max, I spent most of last night replaying our day together. It was one of the most wonderful days I have very had." Maxwell let a small smile play along his lips. "But, I think this is all happening too fast. I don’t want to hurt you or your wonderful kids. If we rush, that is exactly what will happen."
"But, Fran…" "Max please let me finish." Maxwell closed his mouth and gave her a nod of his head.
"Max you are a terrific man. You are caring and thoughtful. But you need to make sure you have your priorities straight. Number one should be your kids. Number two should be your work. Third should be how you balance the first two. Once you have those three in order you can think about adding a personal relationship. You need someone who is like you, sophisticated and classy."
"Fran," Maxwell said in a pleading voice. " I think I have my priorities straight, thanks to you. And as for needing someone sophisticated and classy, I can’t think of anyone who fits that description more than you do. I want to have you in my life and the lives of my children. We all adore you."
With tears forming Fran said, "Oh, Max I want to be in your lives too! I am not saying I don’t want to be. I am just saying that I want you to be in a better place emotionally before you make any life altering decisions. I think when you do you will see that I don’t fit into your world."
With a heavy heart Maxwell utters an almost silent, "Does this mean you are leaving?" "No Max, I am not leaving. I told you I would help with the kids. It just means that we are friends and that is all we can ever be."
Maxwell breathes a sigh of relief. "Friends?" Fran nodded. "Okay, Fran. If that is what you want then that is what we will do."
Fran extended her hand. Maxwell grasped it and gently shook it. "So friend, would you like something for breakfast? Maxwell asked. "I think a bagel and some fruit will do for me. How about you Max?" "I’ll have the same."
Fran quickly made breakfast, which they ate quietly in the kitchen. Maxwell helped Fran clean up. "I’m going to spend some time in my office before the children return, Maxwell said as he walked out of the kitchen.
Fran poured herself another cup of coffee and slowly sat down at the table. ‘Oy, this is going to very difficult’, she thought to herself. Maybe with the kids here it will be easier.
Maxwell sat at his desk thinking. ‘She wants us to be friends; she wants to see me take a more interest in the children. How can she think she doesn’t fit into my world? She is perfect. I will win her over. It just might take longer than I anticipated’! Maxwell sat back with a smile. He had to formulate a plan to prove to her that this is right where she belonged.
Fran was sitting in the living room flipping though a magazine when the front door flew open and in rushed the kids. "Oh Fran, we missed you so much," Maggie yelled as she rushed into Fran’s arms. Fran hugged all the kids tightly. She hadn’t realized how much she missed them until that very moment.
Hearing the voices of his children, Maxwell left his office. "Children, I am so glad you are home," Maxwell said as he entered the living room. The children ran to hug their father. "Oh Daddy, we missed you!" exclaimed Maggie. "I missed you all too. How about we all go out to supper and you can share what you did this weekend?" The kids all agreed that would be a great way to spend the evening. "Miss Fine, you are welcome to join us."
Hearing Max call her Miss Fine caused Fran to hesitate in her answer. "I would love too, but I think I will pass." "Oh please Fran come with us," begged Brighton. "Sweetie I am really feeling quite tired and I think you need some time with just your daddy. I promise that tomorrow we will spend the day together and you can tell me all about your trip."
Disappointment showed on all four faces of the Sheffield family. "If you are sure Miss Fine." "Quite sure, Mr. Sheffield."
Fran helped the kids unpack their suitcases. She made sure Brighton and Maggie were dressed and ready to go after she had bathed and dressed Gracie.
Fran kissed each child as they headed out the door with Max. "Bye my angels. Enjoy your evening," Fran yelled out as she closed the door.
Maxwell and the children had a lively conversation on the ride to the restaurant. A smile came to his lips. ‘I have missed my children. Fran was right, I do need to reconnect with them Hopefully what I have planned will do just that’, Maxwell thought to himself.
Fran sat in the living room. The television was on but she couldn’t concentrate on the show. ‘Oy what am I going to do? The next few weeks are going to be tough.’ The opening of the front door interrupted her thoughts. "Niles, you scared me." "I’m sorry Miss Fine. Where is everyone?" Niles inquired. "Mr. Sheffield took the kids out to eat tonight." "Why aren’t you with them?" With a sob Fran replied, "Oh Niles, I think I have made of mess of everything here."
Niles crossed the room and took Fran into an embrace. "Come now, Miss Fine. Things can’t be as bad as all that. Let’s go out to the kitchen. I will fix us some tea and you can tell me what has you in this horrible state." Niles took Fran by the hand and gently guided her to the kitchen.
"Sit here Miss Fine. Let me put the kettle on and you try to calm down." Niles handed Fran a handkerchief before he turned to the stove. Fran sat wiping her eyes and willing herself to stop crying. Niles prepared the tea and arranged a few cookies on a plate. Sitting the cups and the plate on the table, Niles sat down beside Fran. "Now dish. What’s wrong?"
Fran spent the next half hour explaining to Niles about the wonderful day she and Maxwell had spent and how they had enjoyed their time together. "Miss Fine, I don’t see how this could be upsetting to you. This is marvelous. I knew the minute I met you that you were the person to make this family whole again." "Oh Niles, aren’t you a doll. I do care for everyone of them, but I am not the right person for Mr. Sheffield. He needs someone of his class and stature in the community. I told him I thought we should just be friends." "Rubbish. You are perfect for him. I haven’t seen him or the children this happy in a very long time. They are a family again and you are responsible for that and you are a part of that family now." " I appreciate you saying that Niles, but I can never be the type of woman he needs by his side."
"Miss Fine I don’t agree at all. I think you are making a very big mistake. You are exactly who he needs beside him." Fran shook her head negatively. "No Niles, I will be his friend and take care of the kids for the rest of the summer, but that is as far as it can go." Fran got up from the table. She bent down and gave Niles a hug. "I am going up to my room."
Niles sat at the table with a mournful look on his face. ‘Those two belong together and I am going to do whatever it takes to make sure it happens’, Niles thought to himself.
Maxwell and the children sat enjoying their dinner. The children were more animated than he had seen in quite some time. He knew whom he needed to thank for the wonderful changes he witnessed day after day in his children. He wished she were here right now enjoying this moment with him. Margaret looked at her dad who had turned suddenly quiet. Noticing that his eyes had turned misty, Margaret asked, "Daddy, are you okay?"
The sound of Margaret’s worried voice broke through his thoughts. "Yes Margaret. I am fine. In fact I am better than I have been for a long time." Margaret smiled at her dad. "Guess we all are, aren’t we?" Maxwell grasped her hand, "Yes dear, we are."
"Dad why didn’t Fran come with us?" asked Brighton. "Well, Brighton, I am glad you asked. I want to talk to all of you about Miss Fine." The children all stared at Maxwell. "I want to know how you feel about Miss Fine."
Margaret was first to answer. "She’s wonderful Daddy. I feel like I can talk to her about anything. Especially about Mo………" Margaret stopped. "It’s okay Margaret. Finish what you were going to say." "I can talk to her about Mom," Margaret said quietly. "Yeah, Dad, we can tell her how sad we are and she tells us that it is okay to be sad, but we should also remember how happy mom made us all feel," added Brighton
"How about you Grace? How do you feel about Miss Fine?" "I love her Daddy," Grace said with a smile.
"Dad why are you asking about Fran? Did we do something wrong?" Brighton asked. "No son, you didn’t do anything wrong. But I am afraid I may have done something wrong." "What, Daddy?" inquired Margaret.
Maxwell proceeded to explain how he and Fran had spent the weekend. He also told them that he was starting to feel a special closeness to her and was afraid that he had pushed Fran to start a relationship with him too fast. "Fran doesn’t want to do anything to hurt you children or me. She doesn’t feel like she is the right type of person to join our family. She thinks we should just all be good friends."
"Oh Daddy, we want Fran to be with us. We would love to have her be our new mom. Please don’t give up," implored Margaret. "I don’t want to give up, Margaret. But I think it is going to take all of us to convince her that her place is with us. I have a plan, but we all need to work together. Are you with me?" All three children shook their heads affirmatively.
The rest of the evening was spent with Maxwell explaining his plan and working out all the details of their roles in convincing Fran that she was the person they each needed in their lives.
Fran was upstairs when Maxwell and the children returned home. Niles greeted the family. "Good evening Sir, children." "Niles I am glad you are home. The children and I need to speak with you. Where is Miss Fine?" "Upstairs, sir." "Good. Let’s go into my office so we can talk." Once everyone was in the office, Maxwell explained to Niles what he and the children were planning. "Whatever you need me to do, Sir, I will do happily. I knew Miss Fine was someone special the moment she stepped into this house. I am glad to see that you did too!"
Fran made her way down the stairs. She found the living room empty. ‘I thought Maxwell and the kids would be home by now’, she thought to herself.
As Fran made her way to the kitchen, Maxwell, Niles and the children came out of Maxwell’s office. "Everyone is clear on what they need to do, right?" Maxwell asked. "Yes," they all answered. "Good, operation Fran starts now."
Maxwell sent the children upstairs. "Niles?" "Yes Sir." "If you don’t mind my asking where you were this weekend?" With a twinkle in his blue eyes and a small grin on his lips, Niles answered, "I was looking after a sick friend." "Oh, I hope all is well now," Maxwell said with concern. "Yes sir. Everything seems to have turned out very well."
Niles and Maxwell’s conversation was interrupted when Fran entered the room. "Oh, you’re home," Fran said. "I didn’t hear ya come in." We have just arrived Fran. The children have gone upstairs." "If there is nothing else you need Sir. I think I will see about a few things in the kitchen." Niles excused himself and left the room.
"How was your evening, Max?" "Delightful. The children and I had a wonderful time together. We discussed many things." "I’m really glad for all of you," Fran sighed. "Thank you, Fran," Maxwell said with a smile. "For what? I didn’t do anything." Maxwell took hold of Fran’s hand. "Yes you did Fran. You made me realize that I could be the type of father I have always wanted to be."
Fran was started to say something to Max when the both heard Margaret call out, "FRAN!" Maxwell hid his smile. "I’m sorry Max but duty calls." "That’s fine Fran, you go ahead. We can talk later."
Fran turned and walked up the stairs. Maxwell watched Fran until she reached the landing at the top of the stairs. Maxwell walked to his office and closed the door. He still had some finishing touches to add to his plan to win Fran over.
Margaret met Fran in the hallway. "Fran can you help me pick out something to wear to Whitney’s party?" "Sure sweetie. Let’s go take a look." Fran had just started helping Margaret when she heard Brighton calling for her. "Fran. Fran! Where are you?"
Fran stuck her head out of Margaret’s bedroom. "B, I’m right here. What’s the problem?" "I need help putting this model together. I don’t understand what they directions are saying." "Can you wait a few minutes? I’m helping Maggie right now." "Sure Fran. I’ll be in my room." "Okay, B. I will be in there as soon as I can." Brighton reached out and hugged Fran. "You’re the best Fran." Brighton turned and walked back to his room.
"Now Maggie back to what we were doing," Fran said as she returned to Margaret. "What about one of these, Fran?" Margaret asked while holding up two dresses. One dress was a pale pink and the other was a pastel mint green. "I thin the pink would be perfect. I even have some earrings that will match." "Fran that’s great. Thank you soooo much. I am so glad I have you to help me with things like this." Margaret and Fran embraced. "I’m happy to help you any time Maggie."
Fran walked out of Margaret’s room and entered Brighton’s room. "So B, Let’s take a look at these directions." Brighton hands Fran the paper. Fran quickly reads the part Brighton pointed to. After a quick discussion Fran and Brighton finish that part of the model. "Thanks Fran. It is great having you here to help." "Oh B, I ‘m glad I’m here too for you kids. Now it is time to clean up and get ready for bed." "Okay Fran." "I’ll be back to tuck you in when you have finished."
Fran started towards Margaret’s room to tell her to start getting ready for bed, when she heard the shower start in her room. Knowing that Maggie was in the shower, Fran went to Gracie’s room.
"Gracie sweetie, we need to get you in the tub. Come here honey." Grace put down her teddy bear and walked over to Fran. Taking Grace by the hand she led her into the bathroom. While the tub filled with water and bubbles, Fran quickly undressed Grace. She placed her in the tub and knelt beside it. Fran and Grace had a great time splashing and playing for a few minutes. "We better start cleaning you and get you ready for bed, " Fran tells Grace.
After washing Grace, Fran drained the tub and wrapped Grace in a big fluffy towel. While carrying her into her room, Grace wrapped her arms around Fran’s neck and placed a kiss on her cheek. "I love you Fran." Fran hugged the child in her arms tightly and responded, "Oh, I love you too, baby."
While dressing Grace in her pajamas Fran thinks to herself, ‘Oy, and I thought having the kids home was going to make these next few weeks easier. I love these three like they were my own’. Just as Fran finishes with Gracie, Brighton and Margaret come into the room. "Oh good everyone is all clean and ready for bed. You still have about an hour until your bedtime. What would you like to do?" Fran asked.
"We missed you so much this weekend. Can we go to your room and talk?" Maggie asked. Fran looked into Maggie’s eyes, at Brighton’s smiling face and finally at Gracie who was clutching her neck tightly. "Sure, let’s go."
Brighton led the way to Fran’s room. Fran quickly stepped into the bathroom and changed into a large T-shirt and a pair of shorts. She then slipped into one of her many fuzzy robes. When she came back into her room Fran saw that the kids had arranged themselves on her bed leaving a space for her between Maggie and Brighton. Fran crawled into the bed and Gracie quickly moved into Fran’s arms. Maggie and Brighton snuggled close to Fran.
"Now tell me all about your weekend with your grandparents," Fran said. Over the next twenty minutes the kids told Fran everything they had done and all the places they had gone. "Wow sounds like your grandparents kept you all very busy." "Yes they did. I think they still find it hard to have us around," Maggie said. "They are still sad about mom," Brighton added. "I’m sure they are. They miss her just like you and your dad do," Fran said sadly. "Yeah, but when we are with you Fran we don’t miss her so much. You make us a family again," said Maggie. "You make us feel happy and loved again."
"Oh Maggie that is so sweet, Honey. You have always been a family. You all just need a little help," Fran said while hugging Maggie. "But Fran, you have given us our Dad back too! He has spent more time with us since you came here, then has in all the time since Mom died."
Fran couldn’t bring herself to say anything. She knew if she tried to speak the tears would flow and she didn’t want to upset the kids. So she just hugged them all tighter. The four of them lay cuddled on Fran’s bed until one by one they all fell asleep. Just before falling asleep, Fran made a silent promise to Sarah to love and protect her kids as best she could.
This is how Maxwell found them when he came upstairs to say good night to the children. He had checked each bedroom, finding them all empty. He finally went to Fran’s room. Maxwell stopped in the doorway and smiled. Seeing his children cuddled up to Fran was a very precious site. He didn’t want to disturb any of it; he lightly kissed the children, and then covered them all with the quilt from the foot of the bed. "Good night my family," he whispered as he turned out the light and gently closed the door.
As the first rays of sunshine filtered into her bedroom, Fran awoke slowly. She tried to move but found all three kids still with her in bed. A smile came to her lips. Careful not to wake the kids, Fran quietly slipped from the bed. She made her way to the bathroom. After washing her face and brushing her teeth, Fran applied a light coat of make up. She decided to head downstairs and make herself a cup of coffee.
"Good morning. You are up early Miss Fine," Niles said as she stepped into the kitchen. "Oh Niles, I didn’t think anyone was up yet. I was going to make some coffee, but from the wonderful aroma I’m smelling, I guess you beat me to it." Niles took a cup out of the cupboard. "Have a seat and I’ll get you that coffee." "Thanks Niles."
Fran sat at the counter. Niles placed the filled cup in front of her. After Fran had added some sugar and milk to the cup, she took a few sips. "Just what I needed." Niles smiled at her and said, "I am glad we have a few moments alone, Miss Fine. I was hoping I could ask a favor of you." "Sure Niles. I’ll do whatever you need, if I can."
"Last night Mr. Sheffield informed me that he wants to host a reception here at the house the night before his play opens." "Just let me know what day it is and I will make plans to take the kids somewhere that night." "Oh no Miss Fine, that isn’t what I wanted to discuss with you," Niles interrupted. "Mr. Sheffield would like for you to help me plan the party." "Me? Niles I don’t know anything about planning something like that," Fran said. "The people attending will be from Maxwell’s circle of high society. They will be expecting a professionally planned party. You have experience in doing that, I don’t."
"Oh Miss Fine, I don’t think you give yourself enough credit. They are just people. If there is enough food and liquor they will be happy," Niles said with a laugh. "Mr. Sheffield was very adamant in his decision for you to help plan this and he wants you to be the hostess that night with him."
A look of horror came to Fran’s face. "I can’t do that Niles. I don’t have any idea how to act around high society. I thought Miss Babcock always served as his hostess at these things." "I believe Miss Babcock has other duties to attend to that night."
Sighing heavily, Fran says, "I guess that leaves me with no choice. I know how important these kinds of things are to Maxwell. I just hope I can blend into the background and not embarrass him." "Miss Fine you will do splendidly. You just need to be yourself and everything will go smoothly." "I hope you are right, Niles. When do you want to start?" "Are you free this afternoon?" Fran thought for a minute, "I think so. If something comes up I will let you know."
Fran left the kitchen and made her way up the stairs to wake the kids. Sending Brighton and Maggie to their rooms to get dressed, Fran scooped up Gracie and went to her room to dress her. "Okay Angel, let’s find Maggie." Gracie and Fran walked down the hallway to Maggie’s room. Knocking on the door Fran called out, "Maggie, will you watch your sister so I can get dressed?" "Sure Fran."
As Fran stood in the shower letting warm water cascade over her, she had a myriad of thought racing through her mind. ‘How could Max actually think she was suitable to help him host this party. She was no more cut out to do this as she was to help him produce a play’. "Well, if this doesn’t convince Max that I am the wrong woman for him nothing will."
The rest of the morning flew by. Fran had never seen the kids needing her for more things than they did this morning. And Gracie was clinging to her. She couldn’t do anything without Gracie right here holding her hand or wanting to be held. Fran wondered how mother’s got anything accomplished when they were being pulled in so many directions at once.
After getting Gracie down for a nap, Fran and Niles spent the next few hours planning the party.
The next two weeks flew by. In spite of her misgivings, Fran was truly enjoying the time she spent helping Niles with the party preparations. She found that dealing with caterers, florists, musicians and everyone else was much easier than she had anticipated.
The kids had kept her quite busy also. She found herself being needed by them more and more. The asked her advice on everything, brought their friends to talk with her and they had even included her in family day. Maxwell had deemed Sunday as family day. He made sure he spent the entire day with the children. They would go to the movies, amusement parks, the zoo, and sometimes they just spent the day at home playing games and watching videos. Fran was glad to see Maxwell reconnecting with his kids.
The Sunday before the party found the Sheffields and Fran at the park. Maxwell and Brighton were tossing a baseball around, while Fran watched Maggie and Gracie on the swings. Fran turned and looked over at Maxwell and B, a smile came to her face. She thought to herself, ‘anyone looking at us would think we were a family’. Oh how she wished that was true. She felt more and more comfortable being with them all. But deep down she still felt that she just wasn’t the right woman for the role of Mrs. Sheffield.
Fran’s thoughts were interrupted by a piercing scream. She turned to see that Gracie had fallen off the swing. Fran raced to Gracie. Maxwell had gotten to her first. He was trying to comfort his youngest, but Gracie would not let him hold her. Gracie turned her head when she heard Fran’s voice, "Oh, my angel are you alright?’ Gracie reached out her arms and cried, "Mommy."
Fran stiffened and stole a quick glance at Maxwell. As Gracie climbed into her arms, Fran turned to Maxwell. "She didn’t mean that. She’s just upset. She knows I am not her mom." Maxwell smiled at Fran. "Yes she did. Miss Fine you have been a mother to her. You have been a mother to all three of my children." Fran started to speak, but Maxwell continued, "Can’t you see how very special you have become in their lives, in all our lives? I don’t know what we would do without you."
Tears formed in Fran’s eyes as she slowly looked from one smiling face to another. She couldn’t speak. She hugged Gracie to her breast and placed a kiss on top of her head. Maxwell stood up, "I think maybe we should head back home." He reached out to help Fran stand.
Fran’s eyes met Max’s as she got to her feet. She quickly adverted her gaze. Many emotions were coursing through her mind and body. Fran felt her resolve to stay just friends with Max slowly ebbing. Max’s words played over and over through her mind during the trip home.
After arriving home Fran took the kids upstairs to wash and change clothes. Fran was busy washing Gracie’s face when Maggie stepped into the room. "Fran, may I speak to you?" "Sure sweetie. Can we talk here or do you want to wait til I have finished with Gracie?" Maggie smiled at her sister. "Here is fine." "Okay, so what’s on your mind?"
"I want to talk to you about what Dad said this afternoon." Fran’s eyes widen, but she didn’t say anything. Maggie continued, "He’s right, Fran. You are a mother to us. You have loved and guided us just like our mom did. Our lives would be so empty and lonely without you here. Promise me you will please think about that." Maggie stopped talking and reached out to Fran. Grasping the young girl, Fran whispered in her ear, "I promise I will think about it." Maggie hugged her tighter.
Supper was quiet that evening. Fran was lost in thought. She looked around the table studying the face of each child. She loved these kids as much as if she had given birth to them. The changes she had witness since arriving here. Maggie was turning into a confident, beautiful and lively young woman. Brighton spent less time thinking of ways to misbehave and more time trying to please Fran. Gracie, sweet little Gracie was no longer a shy and withdrawn child.
Then there was Maxwell. As hard as she had tried to just be his friend, she knew she was falling in love with him. The way he smiled, the sparkle in his wonderful green eyes, his voice and his beautiful dark hair just melted her heart.
"Miss Fine? Miss Fine?" Maxwell was gently shaking her arm. Fran turned to him, "I’m sorry Mr. Sheffield. What did you say?" "I was asking about the party. Do you and Niles have everything ready for tomorrow?" With a smile Fran answered, "I believe we do." "Wonderful. I am looking forward to introducing you to my friends and business associates." Fran just nodded.
The next morning found the Sheffield household a whirlwind of activity. Caterers were coming and going, florists were arranging and placing flowers and the people from the party rental company were busy moving furniture in the living room so the could set up the tables and chairs.
Maxwell left early, he had some stops to make before he went to the theatre. After finishing his errands, Maxwell arrived at the theatre. He was trying to take care of the last minute details before the show opened tomorrow. He found it hard to concentrate. His mind kept wandering. He hoped everything went according to his plan.
Fran was busy packing bags for the kids to take with them. Maggie was going to Whitney’s, B was going to Tommy’s and Gracie was to stay with Fran’s parents. By early afternoon the kids has all left. Fran was enjoying a quick cup of coffee in the kitchen with Niles. "Well Miss Fine, everything seems to be going smoothly." "From your mouth to God’s ears," Fran said with a laugh. Niles grinned and thought to himself, ‘Let’s just hope he has heard everything’.
The florist interrupted Fran and Niles. "Excuse me, Miss Fine. I was instructed to give this to you personally." He handed Fran a crystal vase holding a single long stemmed red sterling rose. "Oh isn’t this beautiful?" Fran said. "I wonder who it’s from?" "I’m sure this card with answer your question Miss Fine," the florist said handing her a pale pink envelope.
Fran grasp the envelope and gave Niles a curious look. Niles just smiled and thanked the florist. Fran slowly opened the envelope. A smile came to her lips as she read:
Fran,
A thing of beauty is a joy forever. Thank you for bringing so much joy into my life.
Fondly, Maxwell
"Oh Niles, isn’t he just the sweetest man!" Fran exclaimed. "Yes Miss Fine, he is." Niles answered. Fran hugged Niles and gave him a kiss oh the cheek. "I better head out to the Chatterbox for my hair and nail appointment," Fran said as she bounded up the stairs to get her purse. Setting the vase on her dressing table, Fran looked in the mirror and smiled. Taking a one more sniff of the rose, Fran hurried from the room.
While Fran was out, Niles was busy setting up the next part of Maxwell’s plan. The packages from Bloomindales had been delivered. He carefully placed them in Fran’s room along with a pale pink envelope.
Fran returned to the house. She took a quick tour of the rooms. Everything looked beautiful. She headed for the kitchen to let Niles know that she was home and that she was going to start getting ready for the party. Niles smiled as she left the room.
As Fran entered her room, she noticed a dress bad hanging on her closet door and a shopping bag on her bed along with an envelope. She didn’t know what to open first. She decided to open the envelope first. Inside was a note:
Fran,
Tonight you will out shine the stars. Thank you for lighting my way.
Fondly, Maxwell
Fran quickly unzipped the dress bag to reveal a stunning black silk dress covered with tiny starbursts made out of crystal beads. She had never seen anything so beautiful.
Sitting down, because suddenly she felt weak in the knees, Fran reached for the shopping bag. Inside were two boxes. Fran opened the larger of the two. Inside she found a pair of black Manolo Blahnik shoes.
Slowly Fran pulled the small blue box from the bag. "Tiffany’s," Fran said in a whisper. "Maxwell what have you done?" Carefully she lifted the lid. Inside was a small pale pink envelope. Picking up the envelope Fran let out a small gasp. Underneath lay a beautiful heart shaped pendant and earring set. Fran lightly traced the outline of the pendant. She then remembered the envelope. Sliding out the card, Fran read:
Fran,
When you look at these three hearts remember my three children. Thank you for loving my family.
Fondly, Maxwell
"Maxwell Sheffield you don’t play fair," Fran said as she held the card and box to her chest. How could she not love those kids? Maybe it was time she let herself love the father too!
At the theatre Maxwell was trying to finish up everything so he could go home, but he was having a hard time keeping his attention focused on his task. "Maxwell, what is wrong with you today?" C.C. asked. "I am sorry C.C. I have a lot on my mind," Maxwell answered. "Well I don’t know what could be more important than getting this play set for opening night," C.C. countered. Maxwell looked at his business partner and shook his head. "No C.C. I am sure you can’t. Why don’t you finish up here? I am going home to see that everything is ready for tonight."
Maxwell gathered his papers, slipped them into his briefcase and snapped it shut. C.C. could only stare at him. "I know you will be fine here and I am sorry you won’t be able to attend tonight. Give my best to your sister." With that said Maxwell exited the theatre.
Once Maxwell was settled into the limo, he called the house. "Niles how is everything there?" Maxwell inquired of his butler. "Sir, everything is just as planned," Niles replied. "Splendid. I am on my way home now." "Very good sir. I will have your tux ready for you when you arrive."
Upstairs Fran was busy preparing for the party. After a relaxing bubble bath, Fran took extra care in applying her makeup. She couldn’t wait to feel the soft silk of her new dress against her skin.
Maxwell had made it home. He had showered and dressed. With one last look in the mirror and one more check to make sure he had Fran’s last gift in his pocket, he headed downstairs.
Maxwell was pacing. It was almost time for the guest to arrive and he still hadn’t seen or spoke to Fran. Just as he was looking into the mirror in the foyer, adjusting his bow tie, a movement on the stairs caught his eye. Slowly he turned and before him stood a vision of loveliness. There stood Fran, in the dress ad jewels he had purchased for her. "Fran you take my breath away." Fran smiled at him and slowly started towards him. "Maxwell I can’t find the words to tell you how I feel at this moment."
Maxwell met her at the middle of the foyer. He gently took her hand in his and brought it to his lips and brushed a light kiss across her knuckles. "Maxwell no man has ever made me feel as special as you have today." "Fran you are so very special to all of us, but more so to me. I have tried to adhere to your wishes and to be just your friend, but I just can’t do it. Fran, I love you. I want to make you feel this special every day for the rest of your life."
Fran closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "Maxwell, I love you too." "Oh Fran," Maxwell exclaimed as he took her in a tight embrace. Staring into her eyes, Maxwell could see his love reflected back at him. Leaning down he slowly began kissing her. As he felt her lips slightly part, he deepened the kiss. Reluctantly Maxwell broke the kiss.
"Fran, our guest will be here shortly but I have one more gift for you." Reaching into the pocket of his jacket, Maxwell brought out a small blue box. Opening the box he revealed a 7.5-carat diamond ring. Fran gasp. Taking her left hand Maxwell spoke, "Fran you have the hearts of my children. Now I want to for the last time in my life give my heart to the woman I want by my side forever. Will you marry me?" A single tear fell from Fran’s eys. "Maxwell, I want to give my heart for the first time in my life, to a man that I want beside me forever. I would be honored to marry you." Maxwell slipped the ring onto Fran’s finger and passionately kissed her.
Wiping his eyes and clearing his throat Niles said, "Excuse me Sir, Miss Fine, your guest are arriving."
The End
