For the Longest Time

C.C. sat upright in her bed and ran her fingers through her hair. Fran just left to find Max, and so she knew that Niles would be along sooner or later. After getting over the shock of being in bed with Fran, C.C. was then struck by the idea that Niles had come too. Did he really not trust her? Did he really think that she would cheat on him with Maxwell?

"Ok, Ok, so maybe I lead him to believe that I fancied Maxwell, but that’s no excuse to fly 3,000 miles to find out!" she said to herself, half in mutters, half in thought. C.C. thought of her Niles, how wonderful he is, and how hurt he must have been if he honestly thought that she would give him up. Him! The best thing that ever happened to her! She smiled to herself and took up the picture again. She held it close to her and traced the outline of his face with her fingertips. Suddenly, there was a soft knock on her door. C.C. really wasn’t mad, but she decided to make him sweat a little. They spoke through her closed bedroom door, which was unlocked.

"Miss Babcock?"

"Who is it?"

"Oh, gosh, I’m in trouble," he whispered.

"It’s nearly midnight, what do you want?"

"Can I come in?"

"Depends, who are you and what do you want?"

"A poor and very foolish butler who just flew 3,000 miles to see you."

"Were you afraid I wasn’t coming back? Or were you afraid that I was going to come back bearing Maxwell Sheffield’s children?"

"(Oh boy) I, I’m sorry. It was very foolish of me to fly out here."

"You got that right. Give me one good reason why I should let you into my room? If you really don’t trust me, then why would you even want to come into my bedroom again?" she asked. "Ohhh….this is good," she thought and gave a slight giggle that only she heard.

Niles was desperate. He really had egg on his face this time, and normally, always, he was the one to have the last word with her. He paced the hall, desperately trying to think of how to make it up to her.

The following is their musical number. Niles is singing out in the hall, and C.C. is singing in her room. Niles is leaning against her door, and C.C. is leaning back on her door.

Niles:

If you'd say goodbye to me tonight

there would still be music left to write

what else could I do

I'm so inspired by you

that hasn't happened for the longest time

C.C. (gazing at Niles’ photo)

Once I thought my innocence was gone

now I know that happiness goes on

that's where you found me

when you put your arms around me

Niles:

I'm that voice you’re hearing in the hall

C.C.

and the greatest miracle of all

Niles:

that hasn't happened for the longest time

C.C.:

maybe this won't last very long

and I could be wrong

(C.C. moves away from the door and sits on the edge of her bed)

Niles:

maybe I've been hoping too hard

but I've gone this far

(Niles works up the courage to open her door, and he enters, staring and singing at C.C.)

and it's more than I hoped for

C.C.

Who knows how much further we'll go on

maybe I'll be sorry when you’re gone

Niles: (taking her in his arms)

I'll take my chances

I forgot how nice romance is

I haven't been there for the longest time

C.C. (pulling away, but not walking away)

I had second thoughts at the start

I said to myself

hold on to your heart

Niles: (taking her back into his arms)

now I know the woman that you are

you're wonderful so far

and it's more than I hoped for

C.C. (smiling)

I don't care what consequence it brings

I have been a fool for lesser things

Niles:

I want you so bad

I think you oughta know that

I intend to hold you for the longest time!

Niles kisses her fully on the lips.

"Can you ever forgive me?"

"As long as you promise me one thing."

"Anything."

They sat down on her bed.

"Believe me when I say that I’m yours. Believe me when I say there is no other man I want to be with but you," she whispered. Niles suddenly looked down and saw his picture in her hand. His heart exploded with love for C.C. when he saw that she missed him so much that she brought his picture with her. Niles nodded.

"I love you."

"I love you too."
