"Niles, have you seen my wife?" Max asked. "Sir, she swore me to secrecy." "Niles, of all the years you have been in my employ, and she swaers you to secrecy?" Max said. "spill it ol man." Max said. "Well, sir, I can tell you this, she went to Sylvia's." Niles answered.
Fran was trying to surprise Max with a birthday party. She wanted to plan it at her mom's, but have the party at the house. She didn't want Max to know, it would blow the whole thing.
Fran comes in. "There's my beautiful wife." Max said. "Sweetheart, why so secretive?" he asked. "Oh, nothing, Max, no secrets here." Fran said.
CC came in, and Max wanted to work in the office. Fran was relieved, because she didn't know what to tell Max without blowing the party surprise. "Niles, we're going to have to be on our toes, and I don't want Max thinking I am keeping secrets, but what should I do?" she asked. "You could make up something, Maam' " Niles said. "Great, Niles, but then I'd be lying, and Max hates both secret and lies."She said. "this is tough, Niles, in this case, secrets and lies are needed to keep from blowing the surprise." she said.
"Well, I won't say anything, unless Max corners me, then I will think of something." she said. She went upstairs to change clothes. Max comes in, he was retrieving something he needed. "Hi, Sweetheart, would you tell me why you went to Sylvia's and why you swore Niles to secrecy?" Max asked.
"No, Max, it is between my mother and I, and Niles." she said, hoping it would be the end to his inquire. "Francine, you know I don't like secrets." he said. "Oh, no, he is using my full name." Fran thought. "Sweetie, don't worry that goregeous head of yours, it really is nothing." she said. Max was still skeptical, but had to go back to work. "Alright, sweetheart, but we are discussing this later." he said.
Fran smiled when she thought of Max's reaction to his party, once it could be revealed. She wanted saturday to be perfect, and she didn't want Max angry with her either.
She was planning for Joceylyn to come, and Nigel, and she even was going to ask Max's mother to attend. She hated to lie to her husband, it always brought trouble on her when she has lied to him. "Oh, what am I going to do?" she said. Later on at supper, Max brought it up again. "Sweetheart, now, tell me what is the secret?" Max asked. "Sweetie, I can't tell you." Fran said.
Changing the subject, Fran asked Max what would he like to do on his birthday. Max was annoyed, he hated secrets. "Francine, I want you to tell me the bloody secret!" Max said.
"Max, stop it, don't drive yourself nuts over it." Fran said. Everyone cleared out, they knew a fight was coming. Fran was afraid to say anything, she knew Max was getting angry.
She contiues eating. "Max, so, your birthday?" she asked. "What do you want to do?" "I would like to have a quiet dinner for two here with my wife." he said. "Sounds nice, Honey, and I would love that." Fran said.
"Honey, about this secret, Ma has a problem I am helping her with, so from time to time, I will be over there this week,ok?" Fran said. "Well, how come Niles knows, and not me?" Max asked. Sweetie, I didn't want to disturb you, I know you are getting ready fro your opening of the show." Fran said.
It seemed to settle Max for now.Fran was relieved. All week, there was planning underway. They'd have the part, and then max and Fran would have a nice dinner together, the two of them. Everything was going accordingly. Fran didn't really feel she was lying, Her mother was helping her actually, but she was cornered, and knew she had to come up with something.
Saturday finally arrives, and everything is set. Max left early for a tennis match and he was having a meeting after it. Everyone got the house ready. A big Ble Banner read, "Happy Birthday, Max" on it. They had a big cake with Max's picture on it.
Fran smiled, the night before, Max and she had a nice evening, they danced, and it was romantic. Being his wife was the best, and she was going to show him today how much he means to her again.
The time arrived, Max was coming. He comes in and everyone yells, "Surprise!" Max looked astonished, but he was happy to see his family and friends. "You did this for me, Fran?" "Yes, sweetie, all for you!" she said. They kissed. One by one, Max's sister, then his brother, and then his mom came in.
All embracing max for his special day. Everyone putting any differences aside for Max. Max was in awe, his wife had really surprised him, and he loved it. "See, honey, sometimes, we have to be secretive, so a plan like today comes off nicely." Fran said.
Max kissed Fran. "Thank you, sweetheart." "I love you." he said. Nigel and Jovelyn and Max's mom talked and seemed to work out things. The whole evenignwas wonderful. Fran had another couple of surprises. She arranged for Max to see another video of His Father. "Maxwell, I have always been hard on you, hi father said in the video, you being my eldest son, but one thing I wanted you to know, "I love you, even though I haven't been the best father to you." "I want you to be there for your mother, and your siblings. " he went on to say. "Always know I love you, son." the tape ends.
Max had a tear in his eye. He had finally recieved the respect from his Father, and love to." Why, now, after his death?" "Honey, this pocket watch was with the video, it is for you from your father." Fran hands it to him. Max opens it, and it had an inscription, "To my eldest son, Max, I love you."
Max was speechless, and he had another tear in his eye. He kissed his wife, mother, and siblings. Fran had made him feel so loved tonight, and it was as if a part of him was healed, and he could express his feelings, he was with his family. "Brighton, this will be handed down to you, one day, son, take care of it, when it is given to you." Max said.
Brighton was in awe of his Father.
Gracie wrote a poem for her daddy. It read, " My father is stern when I need it; nice and loving to; gentle as a breeze; and strong and ever true; he loves with his heart; his wisdom comes from within; I never want to be apart; from the man who is blessed in my heart; my father." She wrote a dedication, and it read, " Dedicated to my Father, Maxwell Sheffield, I love you, Daddy, Happy Birthday. " She had put it on a plaque for her Dad's gift.
Max loved it, and he said, "My beautiful baby, Grace, a lovely young woman you are turning out to be." "thank you, this I will treasure, Grace." he said. He hugs her.
Fran signals for the cake to be brought in. Fran had put the most handsome photo of Max she could find on the cake. The cake read"To a loving husband and Father, Maxwell Sheffield, Happy Birthday."
They sang Happy Birthday, Max looks at Fran, then makes his wish and blows out the candles. "What did you wish for, Honey?" Fran asked. "I already have it," Max replied. Fran and Max danced, and max was in awe of her. Who would have thought, this woman who began as his nanny, would years later make him this happy. There she was, Francine Fine Sheffield. To find love once, is remarkable, but to find it again," a true miracle," Max thought.
Fran had one more surprise. Everyone gathered. "I have one more surprise." She said. "I am pregnant!" she said. Even Sylvia didn't know, it was a secret Fran saved for everyone until this moment. Max was very happy, elated, and he swung her around, and kissed her. Everyone applauded and cheered. It was the best party Max had ever known.
When everyone left, Fran and Max contiued the celebration. Dancing, and eating, and celebrating their love.
