Caryn starts....
Fran Fine looks in the mirror and smiles at her reflection. She’s been trying hard to find just the right outfit. She has been a little depressed lately, it seems to get worse every time she thinks about her and Mr. Sheffield’s relationship, if what they have can be called that.
So today, Fran’s decides to give it another shot; however, she’s also decides not to push it. If he wants her, then Mr. Sheffield is has to make a move.
She looks great in her white and black minidress, of course, her matching knee high boots makes it perfect. She shuffles among her clothes that are piled on her floor in order to get to her vanity. She’s finishing final touches on her hair, its especially big today.
Fran smiles, gets up and heads towards the door, but as she turns the handle, a new feeling has erupted within her. A sense of calmness has washed over, for no real reason, just all of a sudden, something has changed. Maybe it’s the fact that she has decided to go on with her life, no matter what happens, or maybe its because Fran for once has decided to put the ball in Mr. Sheffield’s court once and for all. No more pushing, he has to make his own move.
Fran walks out her door and towards the back stairs to the kitchen. She hears the phone ring, but somebody answers it. As she enters the kitchen, she sees Niles fixing breakfast.
"Good morning, Niles."
"Good morning , Miss Fine. You are in an awfully good mood today. Something happen that I should know about?" Niles gives Fran an interrogating look.
"No, I just woke up and figured that things should change around here."
"You’re talking about Mr. Sheffield and yourself, aren’t you? What do you have in mind?"
"Nothing, just that I’m not pushing him anymore, he has to figure out what he wants without my help. No more little hints and I’m keeping this mouth shut. No more making him feel guilty for ‘the thing’."
"You keep quiet?" Niles couldn’t stop himself from laughing. "Miss Fine, be reasonable, you know you can’t stop throwing hints to him, he’ll never get it if you stop."
"Niles, that’s the point. I want him to do this on his own. He has got to prove to me that he loves me with no reservations. He has to do this or we’ll never be together, because something will always be in the way. Niles, don’t you understand that he has to make the move now, I’ve already done my part."
Niles looks up at her and gives a half smile. He puts his hands on her shoulders, giving her encouragement. Niles knows that Mr. Sheffield loves Fran, and he knows Fran loves Mr. Sheffield, but what he doesn’t know is why Mr. Sheffield just can’t stop pushing her a way. Frankly, the last little while, Mr. Sheffield has been very irritable with her. Niles knew why, Mr. Sheffield is fighting with his feelings instead of letting them happen.
"Miss Fine!!" Max’s voice yells through their conversation.
"OY! He’s in one of those moods. Niles, do you know what I did or what I supposedly have done?" Fran’s sad look breaks Niles’ heart.
"Miss Fine, don’t be so hard on yourself, maybe he just misplaced something and wanted you to help him." Fran gives Niles a ‘yeah, when hell freezes over’ look, "okay, maybe not."
"Miss Fine!!" Mr. Sheffield yells again.
"Gesh, I heard ya already." Fran slowly walks into his office. She glides in and sits on his desk. She crosses her legs in her seductive manner that he has come accustomed to. She tries to smile at him but her lips just don’t want to cooperate with the rest of her. She’s awaiting her verdict from him and like ususal doesn’t know what to expect.
"Miss Fine, what the hell happened?"
"Stop yelling at me. If you want something, ask, but stop your damn yelling." Fran tries hard to hold her voice in check, but it waivers a little and Max notices. "What are you talking about?"
"I’m talking about this." He holds up a stack of papers resembling contracts for a play.
"Oh, yeah, those. Didn’t you ask me to send those to......" Fran stops, realizing what she did. "Oopsie." Fran says almost shyly.
"I asked you to do this one thing for me. Why didn’t you send them or should I bother to ask?"
"Hey, I started to, but then Gracie had an emergency and well, I am her nanny, not your secretary." Fran knew that he is going to blow at that last statement, but hey, sometimes he just didn’t get it. Everything seems to center around his work, neither her nor the kids were ever important enough to him.
"Miss Fine, these were very important......"
Max continues to talk but somewhere Fran stops listening. She stares at him, God how she loves this man sitting in front of her. One moment he can make her so weak and she gets this feeling that every thing will be fine, but then just as quickly, he can be so mean and so insensitive that she just wants to run away. This is one of those later moments.
‘How can he tell me he loves me, granted he took it back, but I know he does. But how can he feel that way and yet hate me at the same time?’ Fran can’t help but think of it this way.
She has no idea what she could have done to make him this mad. How is it that she tries and tries with him, but he just takes her for granted. What can he be so scared of? Fran thinks about that for a moment and realizes its not just him, it’s her too.
‘He hides behind his work, behind the children and his own scared feelings’, then Fran finishes, ‘and I hide behind him. I guess it’s easy for me to hide behind him, if he doesn’t admit anything, then that means I don’t have to either. That means I won’t get hurt.’ Fran shakes her head. Why hasn’t she seen this in herself before? ‘So that means I have to change a little too.’ Fran smiles, thinking she’s get a new theory into their love.
"Miss Fine, do you think this is funny? Do you hate me, is that why? Do you intend to make me miserable for the rest of my life?" Max breaks into Fran’s thoughts, little did he know what he had just admitted to.
‘The rest of my life?’ Fran couldn’t believe her ears, but she also knew better than to get too excited about it.
"Miss Fine, are you listening to me?"
"Uh...., yeah. Mr. Sheffield, I’m sorry." She wanted to end this right here and now, she has no idea what he has been talking about.
"Miss Fine, why aren’t you arguing with me? This is scaring me." Max eyes her skeptically.
"Mr. Sheffield, I don’t always argue with you," Max gives Fran a look, "okay, so maybe I do. What? Can’t a girl change? Is it impossible for people to change?"
"For people in general, no. For you, well, Miss Fine, you do have to admit that change comes as easy to you as cooking." Max chuckles a little, but he stops and looks at her, "you’re serious aren’t you? What do you mean change?" Max gets a sudden thought that Fran might mean change as in job or she may just leave him altogether.
Fran suddenly has an idea. Maybe she can show Mr. Sheffield just how serious she is about their relationship. She hops off his desk, grabs his phone and dials.
"What are you doing?" Max starts off, but Fran puts a finger in the air to stop him.
"Hello, David? Yeah, well that’s why I’m calling. I’m sorry, but I need to cancel our date tonight. Why? Let’s just say that I’ve made some new decisions in my life in the past few hours. Thanks for understanding." Fran hung up and started walking towards the door, but she turns around and says to Max, "Now its your turn."
Max watches her leave the office, wondering what she meant by ‘Now its your turn.’
~~~~~~~~
Jafry adds:
... She simply left with that statement. He just stares at the door wondering, "What did she mean? 'Now it's your turn!"
Maybe it is just the usual threat she had been giving him lately. He takes his glasses off and starts to work again, pretending not to care what she meant. But he couldn't concentrate. Her speech and the canceling of a date was so...not Miss Fine. He leans back in his green leather armchair to try to figure this whole thing out.
Every thought was focusing on her.
"She is really adorable, in every way. Without her, his life would be an absolute disaster. She had changed their lives in so many wonderful ways. No one could handle the kids like her and for that they were loving her as like as their real mother. It seemed that she is carrying the happiness of the entire world in this little house."
"What would his life be without these typical ‘Good morning everyone’ or ‘good night my loves. Sweet dreams’?" He closed his eyes, sighing deeply. "And my god, that absolutely sexy and terrific figure of hers. Her legs, her waist, her shoulders, her br... eh face." He stops himself from thinking anything else since his own body is starting to react to his fantasies.
He sits up and shakes his head to clear his mind. Max looks at the clock and realizes that over a half hour has passed thinking about Miss Fine. She makes him so happy, time is always lost to him. But now no work has gotten done.
As Niles passes the office, Max orders a drink to be brought in. He enters minutes later with a silver plate and a glass of whiskey on it. But Niles immediately notices the absent look on his boss’s face and realized he is staring at a photo of Miss Fine on the desk.
"Sir, is everything alright?" He asks with a lowered voice.
"Hmm?" Max hears Niles but nothing registered on him
"Everything alright?" Niles asks again with a louder voice now.
"Oh, yes. Sure. Everything is alright ... I think so. I hope so ..." Mr. Sheffield stumbles through his sentence. "I mean ... Why? Do you know anything?"
Niles looks at him with no understanding, "I know a lot, Sir." He lowers his voice, "More than most people in this house." Louder now, "But ... Do you have something special in mind?"
"Oh, nothing." His boss waves one hand, but suddenly adds, with this I-am-not-interested- in-but-I-will-explode-if-no-one-will-tell-me -look. " What about Miss Fine? I mean is she o.k.?"
Niles wasn’t sure what is going on but it seems that Ms Fine had sure gotten Max’s full attention.
"I don't know what you mean, Sir?" Niles is only half lying. He knew Miss Fine was up to something, but he didn’t know the details.
Mr. Sheffield tries to act causal, "Oh, she canceled a dinner with one of her potential husbands."
"What?" Niles ‘ eyes widen in wonder. He pulls himself together and answers the unspoken question, "Oh that. Yes, she is trying to make some big changes around here, but I think you should really ask her yourself." He hands Mr. Sheffield his drink and leaves.
Max has never been more nervous than he is right now. That 'small talk' with his friend didn't help. No, it made the situation more mysterious and confusing. He takes a big gulp and thinks about the possibility of simply asking Miss Fine what her intentions are.
At that moment Miss Fine walks past his office. Max jumps up and follows her without a plan. He knew he just has to talk with her.
~~~~~~~~
Caryn adds:
Fran doesn’t notice Mr. Sheffield following her. She’s on a mission, she’s intending to find out what is holding up their relationship. She was so sure her breaking her date, showing him the first step towards each other, would push him into him own step–but nothing. Once again, another disappointment by Max. Almost an hour has gone by and he hasn’t even spoken to her.
‘If I admit I’m scared, will he? And if I do, how do I, without being pushy? I want him to admit it on his own.’ Fran’s face brighten a little as she suddenly stops in her tracks, she has an idea.
"Niles!" Fran yells in her usual tone of voice, "Niles!"
Niles comes out of the kitchen shaking his head at Fran, "What? Did you know you could wake up the dead with that voice of yours?"
"Niles, how’d ya know? That’s exactly what I’m planning on doing?"
Niles stares at her in confusion. He smirks a little as he sees Mr. Sheffield hiding in the corner, acting as if he is looking for something.
"Niles, whatcha laughing at? I’m serious."
"Miss Fine, what on earth are you talking about?"
"Remember our conversation this morning about my and Mr. Sheffield’s relationship? Well, I’m gonna go to a source who knows him almost as well as I do. Will you drive me?"
Niles puts the pieces together, "Miss Fine, you’re not thinking of what I think you are thinking, are you?"
"Wha?"
"Are you going to see...."
Mr. Sheffield walks up to them, making Niles word stop in his mouth.
Max looks at Fran and smiles, "Miss Fine, do you have a minute? I need to talk to you about...." How does he continue? "um..about the children." Max has chickened out again.
"Mr. Sheffield, can it wait ‘til I get back from....my errand?" Fran’s voice waivers a little as pretends not to be hurt that all he wanted to talk to her about were the children..
"Oh, sure. Yes, I guess it can." Max says with disappointment, not being able to make eye contact with Fran.
"Thanks, I promise when I get back, I’m all yours." Fran grabs Niles’ arm, dragging him off to the kitchen.
Max stands there and thinks for a moment. No, he has to talk to her now, before he loses his nerve again. He heads towards the kitchen, but stops short from going in as he hears Fran talking.
"Niles, yes I’m gonna go see her. She’s the only one who I can talk to about this. I don’t know what else to do."
"Miss Fine, are you sure you want to do this?"
"Niles, I have to. Sarah is my only hope left. If this doesn’t work, then I’m all out of ideas. And if that happens there’s only one thing left to do–move on." Fran sighs heavily, "Will help me or not?"
"Of course, I will. You’re my best friend, we’ve always stuck through everything with each other, besides, I’ve been trying to kick him in his butt for years to make a move."
"Thanks! I owe you big time." Fran hugs Niles, as they exit the back door.
Max stands there numb, ‘Did Fran just say ‘Sarah’?’ Max doesn’t stand there long, he follows Fran and Niles to the one place he, himself, has a hard time visiting.
~~~~~~~~~
Fran opens the door to the limo, slowly she exits. Niles is right besides her. This isn’t the first time Fran’s been here. Every year, when Max and the kids go, she does too. For support, is what she tells them, but deep down, she feels this bond with Sarah. Fran doesn’t know why, but she does.
Neither of them, see Max pull up behind them. He parks far enough away not to be noticed. He needs to know why Fran is here. ‘What did she mean by Sarah’s her only hope lef? And what did she mean by move-on?’
Max moves close enough to hear Fran and every word she speaks.
Fran walks up to Sarah’s grave and squats down. She rubs her hand along her grave, feeling a little strange about being here, especially the reason she’s here. But Fran pushes herself to go on.
"Sarah, I know you don’t know me, but I’m here for a very important reason, and in some strange way, I think you know. I love Max with all my heart, but I can’t tell him. I know he loves me or maybe I’m hoping he does. Maybe I’m holding on too tight that some day he won’t take it back. I’m not sure if its my dream or possibly a reality. I know this may sound weird, but I need your help."
Fran breaths in deeply, trying to steady herself before going on, "I think you are the reason, he can’t move on. He’s so afraid to love me. Oh God, I’m so afraid, I only wish he knew how much." Fran’s voice cracks , as a tear falls from her eye, "His misses you so much, and that I can’t compete with. Not that I want to, I don’t. I don’t want him to forget you, but I don’t want him to live in the past either."
"I love him, and I love the kids more than my own life. I don’t know how much more I can take. I’ve hinted about my feelings, but he always find some reason to change the subject. This is the only chance I have left. I need you to let him go or its my turn to go on."
Fran turns to leave, but then she stops, looks back at Sarah’s grave, "Sarah, thanks for listenin’. Don’t worry about the kids, they’re growing up so good. Max is doing a great job with them, you’d be proud. I want you to know, I really do love them and I love Max so much it hurts."
Fran stops with her last sentence and walks back to the limo. Niles puts his arm around her and smiles. Tears are flowing down Fran’s face, she can’t stop them. Love has never hurt like this before, it wasn’t suppose to.
As they return to the limo and head home, a soft whisper replies, "I know you do." It isn’t Sarah who whispers, it’s Max.
~~~~~~~~
Jafry adds:
Max watches Fran and Niles leaving the graveyard area. He stands beside Sarah's grave, his hand laying on the cold marble of the gravestone.
"Oh Sarah, I told you how remarkable and wonderful she is. Now you have seen it for yourself. One look or thought about her and I don't know where I am standing."
A gust let him watch the rushing trees around him. He shivers a bit and buttons his coat. He smiles.
"I know, what you want to tell me, Sarah. I should had told her long ago. Yes, you're right, absolutely. Why am I so scared? I adore and love her more than my life and ... yes, she loves me too, but you already know that, don’t you?"
He deeply sighs.
"How many men get such a second chance? And I am so lucky to be one of these men. If I spoil my next chance, please throw me right in her arms!"
He kneels down and kisses Sarah's name on the stone.
"I love you, Sarah. Always."
He says good bye and heads back to his parked car. He walks down the little green hill and enjoys the pleasant sun and the mild wind that rushes through the trees.
As he nearly reaches his car he hears a loud noise, like one car scratching another. And yes, a white limousine tried to pass his car and hit the front mudguard.
A moment later a wealthy looking older woman jumps hysterically out of the limo, followed by the lightly shocked driver. The woman waved her hands panicky.
Max stops abruptly, ""Damn, Susan Cord. 15 million people are living in New York City, why it has to be Susan Cord who scratches my bloody car. That will take a lot time. God, that woman can talk."
Susan walks up and down in front of the cars and cries inside her cellphone. At the same time she reproves her driver.
Max watches the scene but then he realizes this is going to take time, "Definitely to much time and I have no time to waste."
He thinks fast...Niles and Miss Fine have to drive through the whole graveyard parking area. It takes some time. Maybe he catch them at the main entrance, if he runs directly through the area to the main entrance. He begins running.
"I am wearing the wrong shoes for this."
Some people are looking surprised by a man jumping and running across the graveyards.
"Oh hell....I hope there’s no blasphemy in that statement, but I have to catch them. Otherwise my second chance is over."
He rushes through some bushes as he discovers the limo is almost to the front gate.
"Come on, old man. Final sprint!"
Niles drives slowly, giving Miss Fine her much needed time and silence. Since they have started heading home she had been blankly watching out the windows.
Suddenly she speaks excitingly, "Niles, have a look to your right. Ya see the man on the other side, running across the graveyard?! He would run the 100m sprint in less than 8 seconds."
"Maybe he’s trying to stop them from burying the wrong body." Niles jokes.
"Or he trying to get to two buffets at the same time," Miss Fine laughs for the first time since they left the grave.
Niles grins satisfied, because she could laugh nevertheless.
In the meantime Mr. Sheffield is glad that he nearly reaches the end of the plot.
"Max, you are so out of shape. No wonder why Miss Fine beat you at tennis," Max puffed
heavily to himself, "One last jump over some bushes and you got it."
Said it, done it. But he didn't expect the little hollow behind the bushes. So he lands on his backside and slips the last two meters to the street.
Niles turns the corner and suddenly a man is stands in the middle of the driveway. He stands there with legs wide apart, his arm stretches out, his hand waves for him to stop.
"What the hell ..." Says Niles in surprise.
"Niles, what's going on? Why ya stop?" Fran leans towards the front of the limo.
"Miss Fine," he turns back to her. "You won't believe me!"
The back door opens suddenly to reveal Mr. Sheffield. He standing there looking directly at Fran.
"Excuse me, Miss Fine. I'm glad to meet you two. May I join you?:
He enters the car and closes the door. He stands in front of Miss Fine, not sure to sit next to her. Not only because of his sweating and dirty coat but also because he’s not sure what her reaction would be.
"Mr. Sheffield, whatcha doing?" Fran sizes him up.
At first he wants to tell her the truth, about his feelings for her, how he felt after this morning. But as he looks straight in her eyes, he loses all his courage once again. ‘How can I say her I love her? Just how?’
She sees something in his eyes. One of those magic moments she had seen sometime before. He has something on his mind, that much she can see.
Maxwell suddenly searches for some excuse...something he will sure regret later. Niles sees Mr. Sheffield starting to recoil into his shell and starts to drive again, causing Max to lose his balance and stumble right in Fran’s arms.
~~~~~~~~
Caryn adds:
Fran looks at him as he sits on her lap. Their eyes lock for the first time since that morning. She lets him stay where he is at but Niles helps them out a little more. He presses down on the gas causing Max to slide closer yet to Fran. So close their lips are centimeters apart.
"Uh, Miss Fine, I’m sorry." He smiles weakly as he tries to remove himself from her lap. He wants to tell her how he feels but he has to make sure what he heard Fran say to Sarah wasn’t his imagination playing games with his mind.
"Don’t be." Fran simply states.
She looks down as she is in a loss for words. Normally she would be all over him, but since she decided that he needed to be the one to press for the relationship, she wasn’t going to make a move.
Max slides over next to her on the seat and hesitates for a moment. He raises a finger under Fran’s chin making her look at him.
"Mr. Sheffield, what are you doing here?" Fran restates her earlier question.
"Here?" He waves to the car, "or here?" He then waves towards the cemetery. "Because I needed to be."
"Wha?" Fran asks not understanding but then realizes, "What a minute, how did ya know I was out here? This wasn’t by chance was it?" Fran is starting to get angry with him but sees that certain sparkle in his eye and wonders if there is more that he isn’t saying. Fran’s voice wavers for a moment as tears threaten to follow.
"Miss Fine, I needed to hear......" He stops not knowing how to explain.
"Hear what?"
He suddenly changes the subject in order to give himself more time to admitting his own feelings, "Why did you cancel your date?"
"Oh no, ya don’t. You can not change the subject. I wanna know why you followed me out here....you didn’t just happen to visit Sarah the same time I did....oh God." She stops suddenly, wondering if he heard everything she said.
"What is it Fran?" Max prompts her, "You didn’t just happen to visit Sarah the same time I did...go on, please."
"You....wha? What did you just say?" She realizes what he had just said as a smile slowly makes itself across her face.
"I said, ‘What is it Fran?’" He smiles at her.
"You did!! You did say my name." She smiles but suddenly she lets the smile disappear, "Why were you out here, Mr. Sheffield? You knew I was here didn’t ya?"
"I needed to know what Sarah had to do with us...." He trails off wondering what she’s thinking at the moment.
"You spied on me? Oh God, you heard everything didn’t you? You were there and never said a word....you let me go on while you just listened to me." Fran lets the hold she had on her tears go.
"Fran why did you cancel your date?" He wants her to admit her feelings to him, the ones she admitted to Sarah.
"What is this? Why do you want to know so bad?"
"Because I need to know."
"No I’m the one who needs to know. Why did you come out here? And why didn’t you say something when you heard me admit..." She trails off again.
"Admit..." He prompts her to go on.
"Niles, stop the limo." Fran shouts at him.
"Miss Fine, I think you should listen..."
"Niles!!" The limo soon stops.
"Fran...." He softly says her name once again.
Fran turns to look at Max, "Fine, you want to know why I canceled?! I had finally decided to stop pushing you into a relationship and let you do it on your own. But I began thinking and realized that I didn’t help things between us when I keep going out with other men. So I canceled the date hoping it would show you I was serious about us.." She begins to get out of the car, but Max grabs a hold of her arm, "And you would know that I really do love you. But you still don’t give a damn, do you?"
Fran shakes his hand off and slowly exits the limo. She starts to walk but stops as she hears Max finally answer her question.
"Fran, stop! I came out here because I needed to know what only Sarah could help you understand. I was afraid I might lose you. When I heard you talking to her, I realized that I was throwing away the best thing to happen to me in a very long time. That I was using Sarah and the children as excuses to push you away. I was too damn scared to give myself to someone that I may lose someday. But then I realize that I was just about to lose you anyway. Then I wasn’t sure if my mind was letting me hear what I wanted to hear or if you had just admitted you loved me as much as I love you." She turns to look at him as he continues, "I didn’t say anything when you were talking to her because I still wasn’t sure if it was real."
Max slowly walks over to her, he’s only inches from her body, "I realized then that it was up to me. That I needed to tell you once and for all. I needed to end the game that is killing us both. I’m sorry I’ve hurt you so much."
He caresses her cheek, "I love you Fran."
"Please don’t take it back." She softly pleads with her eyes.
"I promise I won’t."
"I’m so scared." Fran finally admits to him.
"So am I."
She takes a deep breath as she stares at him, "I love you too."
They kiss gently at first not sure of how to handle the feelings that are for once flowing freely within each other. Soon the kiss deepens with passion.
~~~~~~~
Jafry adds:
Niles watches the two lovebirds finally find together and are showing their feelings. Oh yes, and how they are showing. A smile spreads across his whole face and feels a incredible satisfaction. Max is like his little brother and Fran the best friend he can imagine. To see the two of them happy is an unbelievable pleasure. He rolls down the window and switches on a radio to a station with romantic music. A tune of Ella Fitzgerald soon fills the air and
makes the atmosphere perfect.
Fran and Max are standing still kissing as the rain begins to fall, absentmindedly noticing the music in the background and few of the visitors of the cemetery surrounding them.. They break apart as an elderly couple throw their congratulations to them. Fran watches them and giggles.
"Maybe we shall go back in the limo." She suggests, thinking that max is getting embarrassed.
But as she turns he holds her back.
"Not now." He states suddenly. He pulls her back to him. She looks quizzically at him as he winks back.
Max can’t help bu to watch her...he has this dreamy look about him. With all that has happened and now is happening is like a romantic movie. He steps closer and entwines her hands in his.
"May I have this dance, Miss ... Mrs Sheffield?"
She holds her breath and looks straight in his eyes. Seconds are passing as she tries to find out, if he means what he just said. There are no doubts written is his dark and gentle eyes.
"You are serious, aren't you?" She squeals. His sparkling eyes answer the question before he words could.
"Like never before!"
"Well than I guess you have yourself a wife."
He invites her in his arms and she gladly steps into his embrace. Fran lies her head against his chest, crying tears of happiness and they dance with their arms tightly wrapped around each other though the light raining of a remarkable day.
‘Thank you Sarah for showing us the way.’ Both Fran and Max think in unison.
The End
