This story starts out with a serious subject, but lightens up. Hope you enjoy. Thanks to Misty for the advice. It’s definitely longer…I just hope it’s not too long. As always, not my characters no harm, no foul intended. As always I may mix up a few of the timelines of the show….

The warm bright colors of the Sheffield kitchen contrasted sharply with Niles’ dark mood.
His head was bent forward, the weight of it held up only by his hands.
Niles told himself: This budding friendship between Miss Babcock and myself has to end. I’m fighting with my best friend and I’m being nice to Babcock. How did I let it get this far out of control?
Niles was just finishing that thought when Nanny Fine darted through the back door of the Sheffield mansion in manic fashion.
She was wearing her usual flashy Nanny Fine clothes, a short red skirt and a skimpier black top.
With one glance Niles took in Fran Fine’s appearance and zest for life and thought: Why can’t I fall for someone like her?"
Fran Fine was in a typical Fran Fine state of mind, which is to say she had her mind on a problem that needed to be fixed.
Taking a seat at the table beside her friend, Fran exclaimed…. "I just spent the last hour talking to my therapist about how you’ve been treating me lately."
During Niles’ recent unholy alliance with CC Babcock the two had played some terrible tricks on Miss Fine.
CC and Niles had done everything from ignoring Fran when she entered the kitchen, to cutting off all the tops of her lipsticks in her makeup case.
Reflecting back on her visit to the therapist Fran pouted and said, "That hour could have been better spent talking about how Mr. Sheffield is ignoring me."
With that confession from Fran Fine, Niles decided to accept the apology. The butler and the nanny stood up from their seats at the kitchen table and embraced.
They had their friendship back on track.
Within minutes Niles made his way into Maxwell Sheffield’s office and hurled an insult at CC Babcock, then quickly exited the office.
Niles knew he had to get out of that office fast.
It wasn’t that he feared CC’s reaction.
He wasn’t sure he could stand up under the pressure of the disappointment that would appear on CC’s face due to the abrupt end of their friendship, but Niles knew this was the way it had to be.
As he had told CC, it was what it was.
After his hasty exit, Niles made his way back to familiar territory, his kitchen.
He thought to himself as he tied on his apron to prepare the family’s dinner, once a woman views a man as a friend…anything beyond that status is rarely achieved.
Niles knew he wanted more than just friendship with CC Babcock. He couldn’t tell anyone else about his feelings especially his best friend Fran Fine.
Niles knew it might take years to break down the barriers between he and CC, but Niles had a great capacity for patience where CC Babcock was concerned although few people might realize it.
……………………………………………..
Meanwhile, CC arrived back at her apartment feeling lonely.
It was more than the usual loneliness she had experienced all her life.
CC felt alone and was very depressed.
As she sat down on the black leather sofa in the living room of her immaculate Park Avenue apartment she thought: No one likes me. No one needs me. Why am I even in this world?
As she looked around her apartment she couldn’t help but think her home seemed to lack something.
She turned almost completely around looking at the walls of her apartment. They were classic off-white, with only the occasional artwork adorning the walls, and a few expensive art sculptures strategically placed.
Still CC could tell there was a spark missing that makes a residence a home.
Then her eyes stopped at the bar. I need a drink, she thought.
Getting up from the sofa she walked to the bar and reached for her favorite label of Jack and started drinking.
She sat on her fine sofa in her immaculate apartment and kept drinking and kept drinking and then she drank a lot more until there was no pain...just oblivion.
Her last thought as she slumped to the floor from the sofa was of Niles. He’d never know her real feelings for him…but then again what did he care? What did anyone care about CC Babcock?
The next morning, when there was no usual "Hello Hello" from CC Babcock entering the front door of the Sheffield mansion, no one was particularly concerned.
There are no set schedules for the Sheffield staff. There is no set schedule for Sheffield and Babcock productions.
Niles, as he pretended to dust the office bookcase, had a nagging concern about the "friend" he had so recently abandoned.
He was also thinking about some terrific barbs he would toss her way if she would just come through the door of the mansion. As he made his way with his duster into the living room he kept glancing at the door.
Niles had been holding back his terse comments since their ill-advised truce began. Now that the truce was over, it was back to verbal business as usual.
By noon Mr. Sheffield was starting to be a little concern over CC’s whereabouts.
Maxwell got up from his desk and walked out into the living room. Something was amiss.
The house was too quiet.
The banter between CC and Niles was missing.
Miss Fine was nowhere to be found and the children were at school.
All these factors combined to make the Broadway producer wonder what happened to his friend and business associate, CC.
It was not like CC to just not show up without calling. Maxwell dialed her apartment phone number but there was no answer. He tried her cell phone and again no answer. Maybe she just needed some personal time, Maxwell thought to himself as he returned to his desk.
Maxwell was not really worried. He continued to review scripts he was considering as possible future Broadway productions. CC was an adult and could take care of herself, Maxwell told himself.
About 2 p.m. there was a call to the Sheffield home.
On the phone was Noel Babcock, CC’s brother.
Niles answered the call. "Sheffield residence."
"Niles, this is Noel, CC’s brother I need to speak to Maxwell."
Niles could tell from the background noise that Noel was calling from somewhere that was very busy, very noisy but couldn’t figure out what those familiar noises were. He tried without success to pry information from CC’s obnoxious brother about the whereabouts of his beloved nemesis.
Walking to the office Niles informed Maxwell of the call. Maxwell picked up the receiver and motioned for Niles to leave.
The butler made a hasty return to his favorite listening post...the kitchen extension phone.
With a deftness that came with extensive practice, Niles stealthily picked up the extension receiver to listen to the phone conversation.
That’s when he learned CC was in a hospital.
Alcohol poisoning was the culprit. It can be deadly.
No one was sure if she’d pull through.
If she did come through, then there is the risk pf permanent brain damage. That was the attending physician’s initial report.
Niles leaned into the wall for support, weakened by the thought that there was a possibility that CC Babcock would no longer be a part of his life or worse, she might only be a ghost-like reminder of the CC who was known as the Beast of Broadway.
Niles continued listening to Maxwell and Noel discussing Ms. Babcock.
"It seems that something really upset CC last night," said Noel. "She apparently went on this drinking binge at her apartment and way over-did-it. I don’t know what set her off. She’d been in such a better mood lately…said she had a new friend and she thought it was really going well."
"When she didn’t return my calls last night, I decided to drop by early this morning before leaving town. Good thing I did. The doctor said if it had been another hour she wouldn’t have been breathing. As it is she is just barely alive, but she is a Babcock and the Babcock women are real fighters. If anyone can come through this she can," said Noel.
Noel recalled the scene as he arrived at CC’s apartment. When she didn’t answer his persistent knocking on the door, he had used a spare key she had given him years ago. That is when he walked through the apartment door and found his sister collapsed on the floor. Noel dialed 911.
There was little he could tell the paramedics about his sister’s condition. He didn’t know what had happened.
When the paramedics arrived they took note of the surroundings and found more than one empty bottle of Jack.
The emergency medical personnel had a pretty good idea of what they were dealing with but made no comment to the brother about her condition. They did suggest Noel look around the apartment for a note or anything that might be of help in understanding her mental state.
Confused, Noel walked through the rooms of the spacious apartment, but had no idea of what he was looking for.
There was no note.
He did find a picture that appeared current of CC with Niles.
Isn’t he the Sheffield butler? What has CC been doing? Those thoughts were quickly pushed from his mind as he left following CC’s ambulance to the hospital and talking briefly with her doctor.
Noel decided it was time to call the Sheffield mansion and talk with Maxwell.
He had no intention of telling Niles anything at this point, Noel had a little more planning to complete before bringing the butler into the information loop, as he thought about that picture.
As the conversation with Maxwell was concluding, the Broadway producer said to Noel, "Let me know if there is anything I can do for her. She really is my right arm in business. I don’t know what I’d do if anything happens to her. We’ll be along in just a short while. In the meantime is there anything we can do for you?"
Noel assured him there was little that he needed.
CC would be another story.
She would need lots of care but he had to return to Northwestern where he was a professor. Noel only had a few hours to spend with CC. She’d understand, he told himself. She knew that career had to come before family. That is the Babcock way.
It was just that sort of Babcockian thinking that led to Noel’s next statement to Maxwell before hanging up, "I will stay long enough to see what the doctors say, but I just have so much work to do. You understand. Besides you and your household are more like family to her than any of her blood relatives." Noel offered the explanation in a very methodical fashion, with no passion, just the facts.
Niles, overhearing the entire conversation, wanted to hit Noel for running out on CC during her greatest time of need, but at the same time he was grateful because Noel had been there to find her.
As Maxwell hung up the telephone he called to Niles and Miss Fine. Niles was standing in the kitchen in shock wondering what part he played in all this mess.
Nanny Fine had to come from the upstairs part of the house
Was it my fault? Did I push her over the edge that led to the drinking binge? These and other thoughts raced though Niles’ mind.
Niles was still trying to pull himself together as he and Nanny Fine enter Mr. Sheffield’s office together.
Fran didn’t have a clue as to what had happened regarding CC. She could tell that Niles was extremely disturbed.
Niles tried to act like he didn’t know what was going on, but was relieved when Maxwell finished telling the story and the real concern he was feeling could show on his face.
Both Maxwell and Fran looked at Niles. He just stood there with nothing to say. His fallen face said it all.
Maxwell broke the silence asking in his typical English manner, "What say we all get ready and go around to the hospital and see how she’s doing?"
Nanny Fine was all for that, but Niles remained silent. Then after a moment responded, "I think I should stay here."
"Nonsense Niles," said Maxwell. "I know you two have your differences, but I know she’d want to see you. She would want you there."
"Sir, I just don’t see it that way. Perhaps in some way it may even be my fault that she’s in this condition," said Niles finally putting words to the guilt he was feeling.
"Nonsense again Niles. She did this to herself with the drinking. I know you’ve kidded her about the amount of alcohol she consumes, we all have, but it seems she finally did go too far. She needs her friends now and that includes all of us," said Maxwell unwilling to let Niles stay behind. "Besides, you’d be taking the coward’s way out. Are you going to let her taunt you with the fact you weren’t brave enough to face her?"
Maxwell knew he had struck a nerve with Niles as the butler stiffened.
Fran quickly followed up Maxwell’s statement giving Niles a way to save face as she placed her hands on Niles’ shoulder. "We’ve all had our differences with Ms Babcock, but she needs us. We are like a family…a dysfunctional family…. but a family. She needs all of us."
Feeling buoyed by the challenge and encouragement of his two friends, Niles agreed to go with them to the hospital even if it meant dragging a ton of guilt along behind him.
As they left the Sheffield mansion he said a silent prayer for Miss Babcock’s recovery.
He was not sure what he would do if something happened to CC. She really was important to him, although he would never give her that kind of ammunition to use against him in one of their infamous battles.
Sitting in the back of the Sheffield limousine facing Fran and Maxwell, Niles reflected about the last week during the ride to the hospital.
It had been great fun being CC’s friend, with a truce in place, but he also knew that pact would undo all he’d hoped for. Could she not see that? Doesn’t she know that women don’t fall in love with their friends…at least not very often.
Usually they fall in love and then learn to be friends.
Niles couldn’t risk only being just her friend…. but having her as a friend would be much better than not having her around at all, he thought as he readied to enter the hospital with Maxwell and Fran.
As they made their way toward CC’s hospital room down the busy sterile gray walled corridor, Niles thought about his and CC’s most infamous moments together…the barbs hurled…and then there was the night of the kiss in the Sheffield living room.
Both knew more than Jack Daniels inspired that kiss. Yet both were afraid to take that step into relationship territory. If Maxwell and Nanny Fine hadn’t walked in, one wonders what would have happened that night.
Of course Niles and CC do have a relationship…. a complicated relationship, but still a relationship…. He insulted her. She flung an insult back. Then he completed the round….game, set, match.
As CC had noted recently, "there is a rhythm to these things."
At the door to CC’s hospital room Niles, Fran and Maxwell stopped. Neither of the three wanted to be the first to enter.
Niles finally inhaled deeply and took the lead pushing the door open and walking in. Nanny Fine and Maxwell followed.
Noel was standing in the room just staring at CC as she lay motionless in the hospital bed. Her head was slightly elevated and her blonde hair was pushed back from her face. There were a variety of tubes and monitors attached to the motionless body.
Niles had to credit Noel, who at least looked like he was concerned, but Niles still felt Noel should stay until CC was better. She would need a loved one around her…oh yeah…Babcocks really do not have loved ones, Niles thought in his special sardonic way and then chuckled as he thought about using that one on CC.
At the sound of Nile’s slight chuckle Noel looked up to see the three standing there. "Good to see you here," said Noel. "I’ve got to leave in about an hour. The doctor just left. He said she’s not yet out of danger, but her vital signs are growing stronger and that’s a good sign. If she comes through tonight she will probably have the hangover of all hangovers," joked Noel trying to make himself and CC’s three friends feel better.
With that last remark, Noel started to make his exit from the room giving the three a half-hearted smile. Then he turned around and spoke directly to Niles, "I’ve signed over a power of attorney to you…since none of the rest of her family is interested, and I have to leave. I know you will do what is best for her. Any major decisions are yours to make. You have the legal authority. She’s in your hands now."
With that last bombshell, Noel dashed out of the hospital room before Niles could respond.
Maxwell and Fran stood stunned with eyes wide open looking from Niles to CC and back.
Fran did manage to see some humor in the situation. "Oy. Of all people, I don’t think Ms Babcock would want Niles with the power to make the decision on pulling the plug."
Maxwell nodded in agreement too stunned to speak. He was somewhat perplexed and insulted that Noel had chosen Niles as CC’s guardian. Maxwell stared at the door Noel had just exited and thought of going after him to discuss the decision. Then Maxwell looked at Niles and saw something he couldn’t exactly explain but he knew then that Noel had made the right decision.
Only Niles seemed to understand what Noel was really saying.
Niles thought, He knows how I really feel. Noel knows I won’t give her up without a fight. Nile did not understand how Noel knew this, but was sure that was the answer to the question as to why he selected Niles to watch over CC.
Maxwell, Fran and Niles stayed by CC’s side for hours, but she showed no real signs of regaining consciousness.
Finally Niles told Maxwell and Fran to go back to the house and that he’d stay with CC until she was out of danger, if Mr. Sheffield would give him some time off.
It was agreed.
Nanny Fine quipped as they left the room, "I can call takeout morning, noon and night if need be." Maxwell laughed thinking it a joke, but Niles knew that Fran had a listing of all her favorite restaurants that delivered hidden in the breadbox by the side door in the Sheffield kitchen.
Like most modern hospitals, New York General had a place for a family member to sleep near the sick loved one. It wasn’t the Plaza, but it kept Niles near CC. He wanted to be there if there was any change in her condition.
Niles made himself comfortable as possible, but slept lightly. He was very worried. The longer she remained unconscious, the more chance of brain damage.
The doctor had come by and told Niles more tests would be made in the morning.
It was several hours later, just as Niles entered that light preliminary stage of sleep, somewhere between reality and the dream world; he heard a moan from CC.
Instantly he was on his feet and rang for a nurse. CC was starting to move restlessly in the bed. Not conscious, but at least capable of movement.
Niles’ heart soared as he thought about CC coming back to him.
Meanwhile. CC was having some thoughts of her own as she fought for her life.
It seemed to her she had been in darkness for days, hearing voices, but not able to let them know she was there.
She was screaming as loud as possible…but no one heard her.
She was lost and saw no way out.
Then the scene changed.
It was as if she were on a gurney and being rolled down a long corridor filled with harsh light. Where were they taking her?
The motion stopped and suddenly she was alone again and she felt so cold.
CC new she had to fight this coldness, as it seemed to wrap around her. She now understood the meaning of a death-grip.
Then she heard the voice that was always able to get her blood up and make her fight.
It was Niles.
He was calling to her, telling her to come back and to not let the darkness win. He needed her.
She knew she needed him.
CC started to scream Niiiiiles.
As she started to come out of her alcohol-induced coma her first word was "Niles." To her it was like a scream, but to those around her it was more of a whisper.
At hearing her weakly call his name, Niles knew his presence had helped.
His words of encouragement had managed to fight through the layers of unconsciousness and reach her.
Now it would be a waiting game to see if there was any brain damage.
Doctors arrived and began examining her.
They told Niles it would still be several hours before they knew any real information.
They urged Niles to go home and rest, take a break from the hospital environment that tries but doesn’t really foster rest.
Niles refused.
He was determined to be there when CC awakened, and he knew she would wake up.
He had faith that his Broadway babe was strong and he knew she was a fighter.
Time still seemed to pass so slowly.
Finally as the first light of the new day started to shine into the hospital room, CC stirred. She opened her eyes. Everything was a blur at first.
Then she noticed a sandy haired head lying on her bed. Niles was where he had fallen asleep the night before, holding CC’s hand.
CC tried to smile, but it ended up being a wince. That’s all it took to wake up the lightly sleeping Niles.
Niles pulled back as he noticed CC’s eyes were fully open. She still hadn’t spoken, unless you count the wince she gave as she opened her eyes that morning.
It was clear by the questioning look in her eyes, as she was looking around the room, she was trying to determine where she was and what had happened to her.
Niles squeezed her hand and assured her everything was fine, and not to worry about the details. "I’ll tell you everything later Babs." There was still no real reaction from CC and Niles was starting to worry about what the doctor said earlier about brain damage.
As the doctor said last night, her mental and/or physical abilities might be impaired.
That impairment might be temporary or it could be permanent.
It was time to let the nurse know what was going on so Niles pushed the call button on CC’s bed.
Within seconds a nurse was inside the room checking all the monitors and IVs attached to CC.
Then he told Niles that the doctor had left instructions to alert him if there was any change and that they could expect the doctor to return within the hour.
CC had a look that indicated she was still confused and scared.
Still, as Niles squeezed her hand, she seemed reassured by this man she didn’t know. CC was thinking to herself, "I should know this man. He must be family. He looks so tired. So worried. Is he my husband, my brother…. maybe my father?" CC didn’t have a clue as to her own age or name or any other facts about her life. She just had one name going over and over and over in her mind, "Niles."
Niles was pushed out of CC’s hospital room when the doctor arrived. He took the opportunity to call the Sheffield house and alert everyone that Miss Babcock was finally awake but wasn’t speaking.
While Niles was still waiting for the doctor to come out of Miss Babcock’s room and give him some information about her condition, Maxwell and Fran arrived.
All three were anxiously waiting just outside the door of the room.
After what seemed like hours the doctor, came out and gave them a report.
"She’s awake, a bit sluggish, and has absolutely no idea of what happened to her or for that matter who she is but I suspect as the fog lifts she will remember her life as it was, but it may take hours, days, weeks….or….longer."
With that announcement from the physician all three inhaled sharply.
Fran took the lead as Maxwell and Niles were stunned into silence. "What happens now? What do we do with her? Come on we need a plan," said Fran as she snapped her fingers whipping her hand back and forth quickly.
The doctor smiled and could tell who was really in charge of this household.
"She needs to be in familiar surroundings. There are still a few more tests to make sure she is steady on her feet and even remembers such basic functions as how to walk. Then hopefully in friendly, familiar surroundings she will make a full recovery."
"If not, she gets the chance to start life anew with no memory of herself or her past." With that said the doctor started to leave, and then added, looking at Niles, "You better go home and get some rest. When she leaves here the real work begins and since she woke up calling for you, you are the one she will rely on most and apparently you are the one she needs the most now. I’ll also send a psychiatrist to talk to you about how to cope with her condition. Someone over indulging in alcohol as she did has some serious issues and she needs her friends for support. This may be a one-time incident or it could be a form of alcoholism."
With that statement the doctor turned and left, leaving the three friends to make plans as to how they would care for CC.
They knew that memory or not, she would be a difficult patient.
Niles was still feeling pangs of guilt, especially when the doctor talked about how she would need her friends for support…. he had pushed her away as a friend for his own selfish male reasons.
How could he even face her now, much less be the "friend" she needs? When she is herself again how much more will she hate him?
For now, he would concentrate on the moment at hand and wait to see her reaction to him and the rest of the Sheffield household.
For CC the next week was a blur of thoughts, memories and images. Her memory started to return and she wondered why every time she opened her eyes she saw Niles there. What does he care, she thought.
Slowly she began to remember the night of her drinking binge and how she thought no one cared for her. Then she would look up from her hospital bed and see Niles and the look of concern in his eyes. That was something she wasn’t misreading. Did he care?
It confused her, but CC still wasn’t able to voice her thoughts. Somehow her mouth wasn’t connecting to her brain just yet. She tried to speak, but everything came out garbled.
When Niles noticed this, the doctor explained that CC was slowly recovering, and none of her problems appeared permanent, but that it would be a little while longer before her body and her brain were working in sync.
While the thought of a speechless Miss Babcock brought a quick smile to Niles’ face, thinking about what he would have said and done to her before this incident, he quickly pushed those thoughts from his mind and returned to the task of watching over the seemingly helpless woman.
CC meanwhile, while laying in the hospital bed with her memory restored, was even more frustrated at not being able to do anything for herself, and the last thing she wanted was for Niles to see her helpless. I’ll never live this down, she thought.
When she was finally able to connect words to her mouth, the first statement out of it was, "Niles go away!"
While Niles was hurt by her statement, he thought with a smile, She’s more her old self. Maybe it’s time to toss her a few barbs and get that fighting spirit going.
Niles replied to CC, "Oh I can’t do that. Noel gave me power of attorney and I’m standing by to pull the plug any moment that I think you might be improving."
Seeing her eyes widen, Niles added, "That’s right, until you are deemed mentally fit…and we know that might be never…I have complete control over you, literally your life… and even your money." Niles added that last part as he noticed she was becoming more animated at the thought of his having control over her life.
"Oh, I should tell you that I’m thinking of changing some of your investments. You really are too conservative for your age. A little risk is needed." With that last comment from Niles CC’s heart monitor started to beep off the scale, which set off an alarm and brought a swarm of medical staff in to check on the socialite.
CC for her part was straining at the restraints she’d been placed in. That was all that held her back from attacking Niles.
The mere fact that Niles was in control of her life was enough of a shock to snap her neural functions back into place. She would be able to walk and talk at the same time. But more importantly she would be able to throttle Niles.
Language was being hurled at the butler that wasn’t suitable for anyone to utter in public. But Niles just smiled. He knew his CC was back.
The doctor wasn’t so sure. He asked Niles about her violent reaction and what caused it.
Niles assured the physician that she was really behaving in her normal way.
The doctor just looked puzzled. "Under normal circumstances I would sedate her, but given her recent problems, I think it’s best to just let her work this out of her system without the aid of drugs. Of course it’s going to be awhile before she can be declared mentally fit. You understand as her guardian that you will be responsible for her. "
Overhearing this comment, which confirmed what Niles told her about having power of attorney, CC again started with a strain of words that worried the doctor. It only convinced the doctor that she would need a long recovery process before she could again take control of her life.
Niles nodded his head in agreement with what the doctor was telling him, knowing that CC was right this minute more her old self than she had been since this mess started. Niles still thought about having some fun at her expense...it is after all their way…then at the right time he would declare his love…but that would have to wait.
Given the state she was in at the moment, love was the last thing on her mind.
CC slowly began to realize that her behavior was doing nothing to help her cause and became more relaxed, determined not to let Niles get the best of her.
The day came for her release from the hospital.
Niles arrived in time to wheel Ms Babcock from the hospital. Since that day of her return to the living, Babcock had been as docile as a lamb when anyone was around. But when it was just she and Niles, the insults would fly.
Niles for his part would just look at her and smile and remind her that certain stocks were declining and that he had a few investment decisions to make for her.
At one point she hurled a water pitcher at him.
Unfortunately it hit the door just as her doctor was entering the room, and the physician noted CC’s behavior on her chart. Prior to that incident, the doctor had been thinking about supporting CC’s petition to be declared competent. CC knew she lost ground that day and made a mental note to be more careful.
It had been agreed to by Maxwell that CC would stay at the mansion with the family while she recovered…that way Niles could look after both CC and the family.
Niles decided that was best, not because he would enjoy double duty, but because it was better than being alone with the beast of Broadway.
The days alone with her at the hospital had been a mental and physical strain on him in more ways than one. He took care that she didn’t notice the physical affect she had on him.
Outside the hospital the Sheffield limousine was waiting, he opened the door and assisted CC into the backseat, where he joined her warning her, "behave yourself witch."
CC appeared shocked. "What you aren’t driving?"
"No it was decided that given your current state of mind someone should ride with you," said Niles as he smiled in that all-knowing way of his. " There was a fear you might throw yourself from the speeding car. Don’t think I’m enjoying this. But I’m the only one who has ever been able to handle you."
"You wish," said CC.
The ride to the mansion was quiet after that initial exchange.
CC wanted to talk to Niles, but still was furious with her family for making him her guardian while in the hospital.
This was Noel’s best joke yet. Giving Butler Boy my power of attorney. What is Noel trying to do to me? Those were CC’s thoughts on the ride to her new temporary home.
Niles mind was in another place.
Why do I keep thinking about holding her, and kissing her and then only insults come out of my mouth. I know that she’s doing better and that the constant banter between the two of us has helped her, but there has to be more. Should I say something now? Should I wait? Would my profession of love be too much for her to handle? Niles just sat there looking miserable with his thoughts.
Finally unable to stand the silence, instead of professing his love, Niles turned to her and asked, "They’ve let you out, but I’ve been told to keep you on a short leash."
"Well you should be used to that. I understand you are used to going out with dogs," snapped CC. "I’m sure I have much better breeding than the usual mongrels you are used to."
"Play nice, or you won’t get your doggie snack," warned Niles.
"The only dog in this car is you," snapped CC. Before Niles could make a retort the car pulled up at the Sheffield home and the entire family greeted them.
"CC it’s wonderful to have you here," said Maxwell as he hugged his business partner as she exited the car.
In times past CC would have relished the physical contact, but with Niles exiting the car behind her all she thought about was the fact she would rather have been hugged by Niles. Where did that thought come from, she asked herself?
Still, she managed to play the scene for maximum effect pulling Maxwell tightly to her.
It had the desired affect on Nanny Fine who stepped forward and said, "Okay break it up time to move along and get everyone inside and settled down." To CC she said under her breath, "All right I’ll give you that one."
To Maxwell Nanny Fine said with a smile, " Once is enough, but keep that up and I’ll let CC take care of your kids." The kids heard that threat and looked at each other. CC couldn’t even remember their names.
Hopefully Fran was kidding. Still the children decided they’d make sure that CC and their dad spent as little time as possible together. Maybe a family trip would be called for. Maggie, Gracie and Brighton huddled together to make plans.
CC’s exchange with Maxwell hadn’t gone unnoticed by Niles who nudged her in the back and said, "Time to get moving…I’m thinking of making some new stock investments."
"That’s getting old Niles. Try harder to think of another torment for me will you?" CC made the comment as she started to enter the Sheffield house.
Just at that point she tripped.
As she was falling forward, Niles quickly grabbed her from behind and pulled her to him. He gently turned and lifted her into his arms to carry her inside.
"Niles put me down," ordered CC.
Niles bristled at the command. Then he just looked at her for a second and responded, "Like I’m going to let you fall on your way up the stairs. That would just make my job that much harder. No Babcock you are staying right where you are until I deposit you on your bed where you will remain until I’m satisfied you are able to walk with some amount of physical stability even if your mental state remains unstable."
Their eyes met and Babcock could see it would be useless to argue. CC resigned herself to being carried by Niles but asked one more question with true concern in her voice and eyes, "Niles what about your heart?"
"My heart has always been in danger where you are concerned." Then he added, "Good thing the stay in the hospital took a little weight off of you," he responded as he stepped through the doorway and carried her up the stairs to her bedroom
Once again Niles had managed to send CC mixed signals.
At one point her heart leaped when he had picked her up and it pounded even harder when he talked about his heart being in danger where she was concerned. Then just as quickly he tossed in the remark about her weight.
CC thought, He’s as good as Maxwell at taking things back.
Meanwhile the entire Sheffield family, nanny included, stood back and watched the scene play out.
No one knew what to make of what had just taken place…except for the wise Nanny Fine who realized for the first time that CC wasn’t after Mr. Sheffield.
Nanny Fine knew that CC’s heart belonged to Niles. Fran thought to herself, I can see it in her eyes. She may not admit it to anyone, not even herself, but she has definitely got it bad for Butler Boy.
Maxwell meanwhile had his eye on the Nanny and was thinking: When am I going to be able to tell Fran how I really feel? She is so good for the children. She’s so good for me. Maybe with CC out of the way and Niles busy with her, this will give Fran and I some time to talk and really get to know each other. Maxwell wasn’t paying any attention to what had just transpired between his business partner and his butler; his mind was only on Fran.
Once Niles was through the doorway and on his way up the stairs the family made its way inside. The children decided it was time to implement their plan. Maggie suggested going out for the rest of the day. "Maybe we can catch a movie and then eat dinner out this evening. We should give Niles time to help Ms Babcock settle in," said Maggie.
It was agreed. The Sheffields, along with Nanny Fine, began to plan the rest of their day deciding which movie to see and where to eat.
To the children it seemed like they were a real family making plans for a real family excursion. It would be complete with a father and a mother…or at least a mother figure.
………………………………………
Meanwhile in another part of the house…
Niles almost effortlessly had carried CC up the stairs into the waiting guest room, which was conveniently adjacent to his own. with adjoining door.
He deposited her gently on the queen-sized bed.
The blonde locks he so often teased her about wisped against his cheek.
For a split second he lost himself to the moment. Then he just as quickly returned to reality. He knew he had to get control or the Beast of Broadway, also known as Ms. Babcock, would run all over him and he’d be nothing but road-kill on the highway of her recovery.
CC for her part, likewise, had been caught up in the moment and felt lonely when his arms released her body to the bed.
Their eyes met and she knew that she had better get a grip or she’d never regain the upper hand…. not that she’d ever had the upper hand where Niles was concerned she thought and smiled.
Niles looked at her and wondered why she was smiling.
Niles was the first to speak and break the spell. "I’m glad that’s over. One more stair and I’d be in traction for a week with my back."
CC responded, "Well I’m just glad you didn’t fall and break both our necks."
"Oh you wouldn’t have to worry. Your kind regenerates while resting during the day," said Niles with his famous beady-eyed look.
"Well you belong to Star Trek the Prehistoric Generation," CC responded.
For now it seemed the two had found their footing with each other. The days ahead promised to be interesting. But first Niles had to return downstairs and see what the family wanted for their dinner and see if he had any other duties to perform before returning to CC.
As Niles exited he told her he’d return in a short while and he didn’t want to find her wandering around the house. "You can dress yourself for bed can’t you?" Niles motioned to a beautiful Champaign colored gown that he had laid out on the bed prior to leaving that to pickup Ms. Babcock from the hospital.
After following his eye movement CC responded, "Of course. I’m perfectly capable of caring for myself. I don’t know why the doctor wanted me to return here with all of you. How am I supposed to get any rest with all the noise from the children…and then there’s your obnoxious self underfoot. We also have to talk about that power of attorney business."
Niles left the room without making a response.
Once downstairs he found a note from Mr. Sheffield explaining the family’s plan for the rest of the day. Apparently it had also been decided that the Sheffields with Nanny Fine in tow would be leaving tomorrow on a two-week trip. This would free Niles to look after CC.
Thinking he now had only Ms. Babcock to contend with gives Niles a start. He was actually looking forward to having the family run interference. To have her to himself for two weeks might just be too much.
Then Niles thought, perhaps I can finally make her see me as something other than a domestic. What am I thinking? I’ll be waiting on her! She will only see me as a domestic!
Upstairs CC was dressing in the gown Niles had selected.
She found herself thinking about the beautiful negligee and wondered if Niles or Nanny Fine had selected it.
Then she thought, Definitely Niles. Nanny Fine’s taste would have been more to red or orange. This was Niles’ work.
Then, as she continued dressing, CC started to think about the events of the day she went on her drinking binge.
Niles in the week before her binge had been so kind to her.
Then he suddenly turned on her. CC frowned. She didn’t understand his problem. All she knew is that for whatever reason both the men in her life seem to prefer Nanny Fine.
That’s when the emotions of that night of the binge came back to her full-force and she remembered starting to drink.
She had just wanted to ease the pain. She’d like nothing better than a drink right now, but the doctor had warned her…no alcohol.
She was still in a fragile mental and physical state and her physician had told her very sternly that for her binge drinking was nothing short of putting a gun to her head and pulling the trigger.
She wasn’t necessarily an alcoholic but sometimes it is a form of alcoholism, the doctor explained that her body might not withstand another assault like she put it through "that night."
That’s when he had told her he wanted her to see a psychiatrist.
CC had been in therapy for years, but the physician felt she needed a new perspective.
To the doctor it was obvious that whatever was going on in CC’s head wasn’t being resolved through her recent therapy sessions.
As CC thought about her recent past while brushing her hair, she didn’t hear Niles return.
As Niles entered her room he saw her from the rear and her reflection in the mirror. She was beautiful.
He knew the gown he had selected would be perfect for her silky white skin and golden hair.
It was the perfect complement to her body, which he adored.
Of course he was always telling her how much her body resembled a cow, but that wasn’t true.
Niles was still staring appreciatively when CC glanced up and caught Niles’ reflection in the mirror admiring her.
CC turned slowly around and gave Niles a look that said, "Well?" Still no words were spoken.
Niles inhaled sharply. She’s so beautiful.
Coming back to himself, Niles shook his head as if trying to wake up. The snappy comment he had planned to make completely left him at the sight of CC Babcock standing there in the gown looking at him.
Then CC moved closer and closed the distance between the two. "What is it Niles? As you can see I can walk and talk at the same time, which apparently is better than you can do." CC knew she had Niles on the ropes.
If she could just land that one knockout punch that would send him away…But did she really want him to leave?
As she finished her statement, she again tripped on the Oriental rug that was part of the room’s décor (was somebody doing this to her on purpose?) This again landed her straight in Niles’ arms.
He swiftly picked her up and cradled her in his arms and then gently laid her back on the bed.
"Apparently you can’t walk and talk at the same time," said Niles smirking. "By the way the family and Nanny Fine are out for the evening and they are planning a two-week trip, which begins tomorrow so it will just be you and me Babs. I’ll bring your dinner to you tonight at 8. Just wear what you have on."
With those words he turned and exited the room.
CC was still trying to recover from being in his arms when the last remark registered with her.
We are here alone!
Wear what I have on!
We are going to be spending two weeks together!
Noooooo!
This can’t be.
The good part was CC at least wasn’t thinking about drinking away the pain.
She was thinking that she might clobber Niles before it was all over.
Her heart was racing.
CC still wasn’t sure why. She had to remember this was the man who had so recently disappointed her by offering her friendship and then cruelly taking it back.
CC wouldn’t let her guard down again so easily.
Niles had his own agenda.
As he prepared the meal he thought about what the next two weeks might hold and mean for his future, their future.
Niles also took time to make himself presentable…no lemon bowl fresh scent tonight.
The guest room had a small setting area that included a table, loveseat and chair.
Promptly at 8 p.m. Niles arrived at the room with a serving cart, wheeling it in. He set a single candle on the small table then set the table with their meal.
He had started to bring a fine bottle of wine, but given Ms. Babcock’s recent experience with alcohol, and following doctor’s orders, Niles decided to substitute that with Mr. Sheffield’s finest bottled water.
CC watched the setting of the scene as she sat on the edge of her bed.
Finally, when Niles was finished setting the table, he turned and told Ms. Babcock in his most butler-like voice, "Dinner is served." It’s a cliché but the usual witty Niles had nothing else to say as he looked at CC.
With that statement CC, still in the Champaign gown, slowly made her way to toward the table. She felt so self-conscious. CC didn’t dare make eye contact with Niles.
Niles for his part couldn’t take his eyes off of CC and CC had noticed. It did nothing to ease her self-consciousness.
He did not miss one detail of the woman before him.
As she sat down, CC started to relax knowing that Niles would be leaving soon. Then she noticed as she sat down on the loveseat that there were two places set.
Niles wasn’t leaving. He was going to stay and have dinner with her. Oh no! Not this! I can’t let him know how he unnerves me.
"Niles I’m not accustom to eating with the help," she snapped.
Niles chose to ignore the remark and lifted the covers from the gourmet meals he had spent hours preparing.
"Niles I’m really not that hungry. Please. Why don’t you just leave the food and I’ll eat later. You can take yours with you. I know you are used to carryout," said CC trying to be witty, but feeling like a trapped animal.
Again Niles said nothing.
The silence was unnerving CC. She looked around the room and noticed a Monet and started to comment on the Impressionistic art period.
Instead of making a comment, Niles reached over and picked up CC’s fork and fed her like a child.
When his fingers brushed against her lips CC thought her heart would pound its way out of her chest.
At the gentle touch of his fingers against CC’s lips Niles’ blue eyes flared.
He would have rather replaced his fingers with his lips, but again he knew he had to go slow.
CC was like a high-strung filly. She needed a steady but gentle hand.
"I can feed myself," said CC breaking the moment.
"Well then do so. The food is getting cold and I won’t have you ruining this meal that I’ve spent so much time preparing," said Niles.
Niles leaned back and showed no signs of moving. "I intend to stay here until you finish the meal."
CC could tell by the look in his eyes that he meant what he said and again it would be useless to argue. Still she decided to defy him.
CC stood up. She had decided if he wasn’t going to move, she would.
Just as she started to move Niles reached up and gently grabbed her by her waist and pulled her back to the loveseat. "Where do you think you are going?"
"Niles you can’t force me to sit here," said CC as she struggled to be free of his grasp.
"Looks like I can and I will," warned Niles who by now had moved even closer to CC to get a better grasp on the woman.
Their faces were just inches apart. Their eyes made contact. Suddenly they were both moving toward each other and kissed.
It was a kiss that started tentatively and grew in intensity as each second passed.
CC had stopped struggling against Niles and raised her hands to his face and then wrapped her arms around his neck and started to caress his back as she tried to move closer to him.
Then just as she seemed to surrender to him, Niles recalled that less than 24-hours ago CC had been in the hospital. Things are going too fast. I don’t want to stop. I’ve got to do something because soon it is going to be too late," thought Niles.
CC had her own thoughts that centered on Niles. She wanted him. She needed him.
Then suddenly she was kissing him, but there was no response. She looked at him. Was he going to take this away too just like he did their friendship. CC thought she couldn’t trust him and the fear she felt of his possible rejection reflected in her eyes.
Niles understood the look in her eyes and told her, "I’m not leaving you, but I think we had better slow the pace. Too much too soon could have terrible consequences for both of us. Don’t you agree?"
What could CC say. She silently nodded her head in agreement.
"I’ll be back in a few minutes," said Niles as he pulled the bed cover over CC.
CC wondered what Niles was doing.
Niles was entering the living room just as the Sheffields with Nanny Fine entered the house.
"Evening Niles. Everything go okay tonight," asked Mr. Sheffield?
"Everything has been just fine. I am finishing up with Ms. Babcock now. She’s in her room preparing for bed and I thought I’d take her some warm milk before retiring for the night."
"Splendid idea Niles. You know we’ll be leaving early in the morning. No need for you to rise early. We’ll buy breakfast out and make it part of the vacation," said Maxwell.
"Very good sir," responded Niles.
"Oh Niles, would you be a dear and check on Ma and Yeta while we’re gone. You know how they miss me if I’m not around to let them know what’s going on," said Nanny Fine.
Niles agreed, trying to get the family moving. "If you will excuse me I have to get back to the patient. I hope there’s no full moon tonight. You know how she likes to howl at it."
With that remark Niles exited to the kitchen and the rest of the family went upstairs and to bed.
Niles prepared the warm milk and set CC’s medication on a tray. The doctor had given her a mild anti-anxiety drug and Niles felt like there was no time like the present to give it to her.
It would help her sleep and remove all thoughts of intimacy for the night…at least that’s what he hoped…maybe I should try one.
Niles carried the tray into CC and set it on the table by her bed. He explained that his delay was due to the Sheffields and Nanny Fine returning home.
CC looked at the medication on the tray and then the glass of warm milk. "Don’t you have anything stronger? Milk? Yuck!"
"CC take your medicine and after I dress for bed I will return through the adjoining door. I will keep my promise to hold you, but you have to promise not to tempt me." Niles knew that right now CC would promise anything to get him back where she wanted him. However he also knew that by the time he returned the medication would have taken full effect.
Niles stayed long enough to make sure she swallowed the pills then exited through the adjoining door to his room. There he took his time getting ready for bed. After about 30 minutes Niles felt it was safe to return to CC’s room. He had been right. The medication was kicking in. It wasn’t strong enough to put her out, just enough to make her relax.
She saw Niles as he entered from the far side of the room. "Niles, you came back. I wondered if you would keep your commitment."
The words came out a little slurred. Then she held out her arms to him.
Niles moved closer to the bed and then let her arms take him and pull him close. He kissed her, but this time her response was less passionate. It was the kiss of someone who was drifting off to sleep.
Niles gently placed her head on the pillow and climbed into bed beside her, wrapping her in his arms and holding her as he too drifted off to sleep. But Niles’ sleep was less restful than CC’s.
Niles dreamed that he and CC were surrounded by fog and there was something terrible chasing them and he needed to hold on to CC. In the dream CC was just within his grasp but she kept slipping away. He couldn’t hold on to her. He just couldn’t keep up. CC was just out of his league. He wasn’t good enough for CC.
The dream made his body grow restless and soon he was awake with that disturbed feeling that comes with an unfinished dream.
For a moment he wasn’t sure where he was then remembered he was in bed with CC and she was still there in his arms. His less than fitful rest hadn’t seemed to disturb her.
CC meanwhile was having her own dream. In that dream she was in a meadow. Spring wildflowers were in bloom. It was a place she hadn’t visited since she was a child, her grandmother’s home in Virginia. She felt content. She felt safe. No one was judging her. No one was pushing her to attain a certain status. She was free to be herself. She twirled around in the field feeling completely uninhibited. It was a feeling she had not experienced in years. Then suddenly there was someone walking toward her. She wasn’t afraid. She knew who it was, although the image was still not clear. He carried a bouquet of wildflowers he had picked just for her. As he drew closer she could see his face. It was who she had expected. It was Niles. He drew her close.
As CC was still dreaming, Niles, who was still holding CC despite the growing numbness in his right arm, glanced down and noticed the smile of contentment on her face. He gently kissed her cheek and then decided to give sleep another chance.
As the rays from the morning sun beamed into the room the sleeping couple awakened. Both needed a moment to remember where they were, what had happened the night before and what hadn’t happened.
With a start, CC asked Niles, "Shouldn’t you be dashing off to prepare the family breakfast before they leave town or find you in here?"
"No. The family was supposed to have left a few hours ago on their two-week trip to the wilds of Vermont. I was told not to bother with the morning meal."
"Well where does that leave me?" CC asked the question as her stomach growled loudly. She was feeling a growing need for food. Niles could take a hint. "I’ll be back with breakfast for both of us before you know I’m even gone."
"I’ll know you’re gone but hurry back. Oh Niles could you make those wonderful Belgium waffles I love, and maybe some eggs. My appetite seems to have returned with a vengeance."
Niles was more than willing to accommodate his lady. That’s what she is, or will be before long…. my lady, Those were his thoughts as he made his way to the kitchen to prepare the morning meal.
Downstairs Niles thought about the day ahead. It’s time to get her up and moving about, back out in public and put some of that fire for life back in her eyes.
As Niles returned to share a leisurely breakfast with CC he noticed her mood was very different. She seemed uncomfortable and fidgeted with her gown and hair as he entered the room. When the door open she had immediately jumped up from the bed and moved to the sitting area. Niles thought, perhaps I left her alone too long.
Unlike the night before when she tried to turn away from the meal, this morning she was famished and wasn’t about to give him any resistance when it came to food.
But as for a relationship with Butler Boy, that is another topic and one she felt had to be discussed…but not before eating the wonderful meal Niles had prepared.
As they enjoyed the morning meal together Niles was talking about the day he had planned for them. CC was thinking that while they were out…in public…would be a good time to tell Niles they needed to tone down this…. this relationship…this whatever you want to call it. The light of day had definitely given her a case of cold feet.
They decided…or rather Niles demanded that the day remain informal.
He had moved several of her clothes to the Sheffield mansion in preparation for CC’s return from the hospital. Among the clothing he found several casual outfits he’d never seen CC wear. He didn’t just want to imagine her in jeans and a tee shirt. He wanted to see her in the outfit and maybe break down a few more of her "class" walls she had built over the years.
Niles for his part knew exactly what he planned to wear. It was a medium blue cotton shirt with kakis. Perfect for a walk through Central Park and a picnic. He hadn’t told CC but while he was preparing breakfast he was also multi-tasking and preparing their afternoon meal. He wanted to make every move count today.
CC saw how happy Niles was at all the plans he had made and her anxiety only grew.
When they began their walk in Central Park, and Niles reached for her hand, CC knew it was time to put their situation back in perspective, and CC knew she would have to make the opening gambit in their verbal game of chess.
As Niles spread the blanket on the grass CC knew the time was at hand.
"You know Niles today would be perfect if Maxwell were here with me."
Niles inhaled sharply and decided to pretend not to hear the remark.
"I always thought Maxwell has all the qualities a woman should look for in a man. He’s handsome in a boyish sort of way. He’s talented. He comes from the right background…." CC was about to continue with her lists of why Maxwell was the perfect man, but before another word came out of her mouth Niles had claimed it with his own. The surprise and pressure from the sudden action brought them both to the ground with Niles’ arms wrapped securely around her. Then Niles suddenly pulled away and asked, "Can your perfect man match that?"
Without waiting for a response Niles got up and returned to unpacking the picnic basket. He was determined not to let CC ruin the day for him.
He knew what game she was playing because he wrote the rulebook. Niles wasn’t about to let CC run hot and cold with him.
CC was equally determined to turn the situation around and put some emotional distance between them.
"Hey pantry pal what’s the latest item on your shelves," said CC trying to insult and be funny at the same time.
Niles knew she was out of her depth but still thought he’d toy with her for a while. "Don’t start with me bottle blonde. You know you are way out of your league when it comes to verbal sparring. After all you have to be able to think and talk at the same time. That’s a fete you have never accomplished."
The challenge had been issued.
CC felt she had to fire back a retort equal to what Niles had just tossed her way. "Better a bottle blonde than vertically challenged." That reference to his height should nail him. I don’t know a man who isn’t sensitive about how tall he is…or isn’t.
Niles thought, I’m tall enough to handle you but said, "I guess times are getting hard for you since the city police cracked down on the corner you worked nights. I hear that pimp Leon has been asking about you." Niles was totally unaffected by CC’s barbs, which was very disconcerting to CC.
As she sat on the blanket Niles handed her a sandwich and a bottle of water and said, "Truce?"
"Truce," agreed CC as she accepted both the truce and the food.
She should have known she couldn’t win a war of words with Niles as her foe.
Rolling onto her stomach and holding her head in her hands like a child she asked Niles about the trip Maxwell took the family on.
"All I really know is that they’re in what Mr. Sheffield called the wilds of Vermont…not that Vermont is all that wild," said Niles.
"You know Nanny Fine isn’t going anywhere that there isn’t cable television, maid service and of course spa facilities," said CC thinking that a jab at Nanny Fine might rouse Niles.
"I don’t know any more than you. They’re in Vermont and I have a couple of phone numbers if they’re needed. They told me to tell you to treat the house as if it were your home and enjoy the time off. Mr. Sheffield did say something about tackling a new play when he returns and that he’d need you to line up some fresh money for this particular venture," said Niles.
Without realizing it several hours had passed and the sun was low in the sky when Niles suggested they head for home. "We wouldn’t want you scaring off the muggers, would we," he said with a smile.
CC wanted to be anywhere but alone with Niles at the house.
She knew that after last night she didn’t want to resist him. She also had a slight fear that he might reject her after this afternoon’s events. She still hadn’t forgotten how he rejected her and their friendship.
"Instead of going home, why don’t we take a carriage ride through the park. Then how about I buy your dinner. You’ve fixed me three great meals and I think I should return the favor…. and of course you don’t want me cooking."
Remembering the food she once prepared for Maxwell, Niles chuckled and said, "You’re right about not wanting you to cook. We only need one of us sick at a time."
After thinking about the suggestion, Niles agreed to the offer, but asked, "You’ve only been out of the hospital a day. Are you sure you are strong enough?" I know she is avoiding being alone in the house with me. That’s all right. I can wait. I want everything perfect.
CC assured Niles that she felt fine. "I’ve done nothing but stay in a hospital bed for days. I’ve had all the rest I can take."
CC thought she had been pretty smart maneuvering Niles into dinner out. Little did she realize that, as always, Niles was the one maneuvering the events of the evening.
It was appropriate she had selected the Bear and Bull for their dinner. It was more a place where Wall Street types hang out after work rather than Broadway. The décor had a manlier atmosphere. Niles felt a taunt forming on his tongue, but refrained.
He knew the meal couldn’t last all night. CC knew the same.
As they made small talk throughout the evening, Niles caught her up on all the society gossip. CC would never admit it but she loved the stories Niles told about what was going on behind closed doors in some of New York’s most exclusive homes.
As they were sharing a laugh at someone else’s expense, Niles reached over and grabbed her hand and then leaned in and kissed her quickly but gently on the mouth catching her in mid cackle.
Niles couldn’t resist, "Speaking of chicken…"
"Niles! We agreed not to tell anyone about that. Remember?"
"Oh I never have, but I just remembered we need some eggs." By now Niles was about to fall out of his chair laughing.
CC too saw the humor and was laughing almost as hard as Niles. Then suddenly they both stopped laughing and just sat and looked at each other. Both had hope and fear in their eyes. Both wanted to say something, but neither could.
The moment was broken when their waiter came up to the table to see if they wanted dessert. CC asked Niles if he cared for dessert, and he responded.
"Most definitely, but I’d rather have it in our room." With this comment from Niles, CC blushed. It was something she rarely did, but the images that Niles had just conjured in her mind were exciting and enticing. CC quickly paid the check. As they were starting to exit the restaurant CC took Niles by the elbow and turned him around and said, "I have a better idea." The couple entered the Waldorf Astoria where CC quickly acquired a suite with a beautiful view of Manhattan.
Since arriving in the lobby of the Waldorf, Niles had been extremely quiet.
He was arguing with himself. Some part of his conscious told him things were moving too fast and that CC wasn’t ready.
CC knew that Niles was struggling with how to handle the situation, but she wasn’t giving him the chance to medicate her as he did the night before.
Tonight there would be a different ending to their encounter.
As much as she loved being in Niles’ arms and having him hold her close, she knew that she would love more being a part of him and having him. She loved him.
She knew in her heart that it would be very special. But there was still that part of her that feared letting him get any kind of upper hand in the situation.
CC was dealing with as many mixed emotions as Niles.
As they approached the door to their room they stopped briefly and looked at each other.
"Last chance to back out," said CC with a smile on her lips, but fear in her eyes that said she was afraid of being disappointed by Niles again.
Niles took the electronic key from her and slid it into the door and pushed the door open.
As they entered the room she could see the passion she was feeling reflected back in his beautiful blue eyes.
Niles began to kiss and caress her gently. CC pulled him down closer. She couldn’t get close enough.
"Be patient CC. This is something not to be hurried. We have the night. We have a lifetime," said Niles.
CC’s heart leaped at the thought of a lifetime of love with Niles, but part of her remembered that he hadn’t used the "L" word. Then again neither had she, but she knew she loved Him. That love was growing as was the passion being shared.
Later they talked into the night about their hopes and their dreams.
When morning finally arrived, the two awoke in the king-sized bed wrapped in each other’s arms. They were at peace with each other and life. Both knew nothing could separate them.
CC was the first to speak. "Niles where do we go from here?"
"I suppose we should head back to the Sheffield home," said Niles, which earned him a bop on the head with a pillow. CC exclaimed, "Not literally. I mean where are we going with this?" CC motioned with her hands at both of them.
Niles smiled and said in typical male fashion, "We don’t need to talk it to death if that’s what you mean."
CC was not happy by the response and decided she would shower before dressing to leave.
Seeing her head toward the shower, Niles responded, "Wait, I’ll go with you."
"No just wait and think about what I said," CC replied.
Niles was a little upset that CC didn’t want to shower with him. What did I say? Then it occurred to Niles that CC was thinking that now that he had gotten what he had wanted for so long, that he was ready to move on, just like so many other of her male companions over the years. He would have to make it clear to the woman that she was so wrong.
As CC returned to the room wrapped only in a towel, Niles grabbed her from behind and then whirled her to face him.
"Woman! You are so exasperating!"
CC thought, here it comes. He’s ready to pick a fight and ruin what we shared last night.
Then Niles pulled her to him again, and passionately kissed her. Then he asked, "You didn’t think this would be a one-night-stand?"
CC looked away from Niles because she didn’t want him to know that was exactly what she was afraid of.
Niles again held her and whispered, "CC my love. This has been building for decades and you think it could all end with just one night. Woman I want to be with you the rest of my life."
When CC heard him make his declaration of love she still couldn’t really believe those words were coming from Niles.
"I love you Niles, but I am also afraid of you," said CC.
"Afraid of me? Why?"
"Niles, think about it. For years all we have done is bicker. Then suddenly we are in each other’s company for a few days and the next thing you know we both are declaring our love. How real is that," asked CC.
Niles could tell that his high-strung socialite was in need of a little space, but he also had a test of his own for CC.
"So was this just a moment of madness on your part?"
CC winced when Niles used the word madness, knowing her mental stability was extremely fragile. Stiffening she responded, "You can call it that if you want. By the way isn’t it time for you to tear up that power of attorney."
Niles by this point was growing tired of CC’s cat-and-mouse game. "So what you really wanted was for me to think gee what a great night and then just hand over your assets…?"
CC hadn’t meant to imply that last night was about her money, but that is the way it sounded to Niles.
At this point Niles released CC and they both started to dress. There were no more words exchanged between the two, only a sad silence.
They returned to the Sheffield mansion. It was then that CC told Niles that she thought she should go to her own home.
At this point Niles was almost ready to let her, and then remembered how they had argued and he knew they had to make amends. I can’t let her leave like this. She is so much a part of me. I don’t want her to go.
Instead of telling her how he felt, Niles simply said, "No."
"What do you mean no," said CC who hadn’t had anyone ever say no to her.
"I mean that under the terms of your release from the hospital you are my responsibility and I say you can’t leave," said Niles. That’s when Niles saw the fire that had been missing from CC’s eyes. Oh he had seen a few sparks over the last few days, but in general that spark that was uniquely CC was missing at least until today.
CC turned and remembering how the doctor had noted her behavior in the hospital, decided not to unleash Hurricane Babcock just yet. She needed a plan. Even CC admitted that without a plan she wouldn’t stand any kind of chance against Niles.
Niles meanwhile would mount his own plan.
CC climbed the stairs to her room.
Nile decided it was time to check in with the Sheffields by phone.
"Hello Mr. Sheffield. No there is nothing wrong. I just thought I would make sure everything was going as planned. Ms Babcock is doing fine. You will be home earlier than expected? I see. Well take care and I will see you tomorrow."
Niles now knew that he had to speed things up with Ms. Babcock and that he would only have tonight to set things in motion.
A little while later Niles knocked on CC’s door. He informed her, "Mr. Sheffield and family will be returning tomorrow. Just thought you’d like to know. What would you like for lunch?"
"I’m not hungry," CC responded, which was the truth. She was miserable thinking about a life without Niles.
"We didn’t have breakfast. You need to eat," said Niles with concern in his voice.
Neither dared mention their encounter at the Waldorf. Niles in some ways kicked himself mentally for not insisting that they return to the mansion where they would have at least been in familiar surroundings the morning after. Or they could have gone to CC’s apartment, just a few minutes away down Park Avenue. This is a mess, thought Niles.
CC really wasn’t hungry and suggested Niles prepare a fine dinner for the evening meal. "I am sure my appetite will return by then."
Niles thought of a funny retort, but seeing the sadness in CC’s eyes if only for a moment when her guard was down, was enough to make him bite his tongue.
As afternoon turned into evening, both CC and Niles were nervous. Neither had said two words to the other since their banal conversation about lunch.
Niles decided elegance would be the theme for the night. At 4 p.m. he left a card at CC’s door informing her dinner would be formal tonight.
CC was taken back by the suggestion, but decided to go along, but what to wear? Then she looked in her closet. There was the black gown she had worn a couple of years ago when Niles had her cluck like a chicken, and then the evening ended with a passionate kiss.
CC wasn’t having much luck formulating her own plan to defeat Niles. He had already taken root in her heart. So she decided to go along with whatever Niles was planning and if that required a formal gown, then she would dress the part.
Promptly at 8 p.m. Niles arrived at the door to her room and knocked. She opened it and found him wearing a tux. "Wow Bell Boy you clean up good." CC had made the comment before she could stop her self.
"I could say the same about you," responded Niles who held out his arm to escort the lady.
"Niles you are actually treating me like a lady. Did the DNA results finally come back?"
Niles just smiled back at her.
They descended the stairs to the formal dinning room where Niles had an elegantly prepared table with Mr. Sheffield’s finest china and silver.
The room was lit only by candlelight.
Music played in the background…what was the song that sounded so familiar to CC…. Our love is Here To Stay.
The meal was perfect. Niles had kept the conversation light. There was no talk of business or of CC’s power of attorney.
Finally as the meal was finished, they started to retire to the living room. But Niles reached across the table for CC’s hand and stopped her from getting up.
"I have something I want to give you," said Niles.
CC was startled by the action and looked questioningly at Niles.
At this point Niles reached into the pocket of his jacket and pulled out a paper and held it over the flame of the centerpiece candle, as it caught fire CC could just make out the words "Power of Attorney."
CC knew that once the document was destroyed, that ended the hold Niles had over her in any legal way.
With this one act Niles had managed to break down the wall between them that CC had been busily reconstructing since early morning.
As he still held CC’s hand he let the burning paper fall to a plate leaving behind only charred remains and then he took her hand in both of his caressing it and looking at her hoping that his gesture would make the difference.
CC was so touched by his action that tears started running down her cheeks. She knew this was Niles’ way of showing he cared and that he wasn’t afraid to free her, knowing that if she really loved him she would understand the gesture.
"CC I love you," said Niles as he stood and pulled her up from her chair to where he was now standing."
"I love you Niles," CC responded.
In an instant they were again kissing.
They knew they were destined to be together.
When the Sheffields arrived home the next day they would find two very different people waiting to welcome them.
That following afternoon both Niles and CC welcomed Maxwell, Nanny Fine and the children home.
Outwardly everything appeared the same. Niles and CC were still tossing insults at each other. They had decided not to discuss their new status with the family.
Still, Nanny Fine knew something was going on.
"Okay Niles spill it. Did anything happen to you two while we were gone," asked Fran.
"No," said Niles a little too quickly with a voice about two octaves higher than normal.
Nanny Fine didn’t believe him but decided to let the matter drop for now. She could sense that something was different.
Niles and CC both somehow seemed softer. The insults were still there, but some how there seemed to be an underlying meaning…
A month later Niles was dusting the living room; CC had just walked by and goosed him.
The two were very playful with each other when no one else was around and the Sheffields were out for the day.
Just then the phone rang.
"Sheffield Residence," said Niles.
"Yes. I see. No thank you and I do mean that," said Niles as he returned the receiver to its stand.
CC looked at him, "Well…. who was that?"
"Oh that was Noel."
Why didn’t you let me speak to him? He is my brother."
"Noel called for me. He wanted to know how you were and thanked me for taking such good care of you. He said he somehow knew I was the man for the job, said something about Maxwell being too easy going to handle you," Niles explained with a laugh.
CC with her wicked laugh said, "You are anything but easy-going." Then she pulled him to her for a kiss.
Noel for his part, after hanging up, grinned; he knew what he had set in motion.
The End
