Max: C.C., this new play is going to turn out fabulous! It's just taking up all of our time.
C.C.: Well, Maxwell what do expect? It opens in 3 days.
Max: I know, I just feel as if I am neglecting everyone, especially Miss Fine.
C.C.: Maxwell, is that all you care about?
Max: I guess you're right.
C.C.: You know, we have a Broadway play coming out in about 72 hours, I think your mind should be somewhere in that ballpark.
Max: All right! I get the point.
C.C.: Good, now about these costumes.......
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fran and Niles are sitting in the kitchen talking.
Fran: Niles, I am worried. He hasn't hardly said three words to me in the past 2 days.
Niles: Well, Miss Fine he is working on his play.
Fran: I know, but I miss him. I doubt he feels the same way for me.
Niles: Now Miss Fine, don't think that. I am sure that he is just very busy.
Fran: Well, I am getting sick of this Niles. He does this to me all of the time. He treats me like some concubine, he comes and goes when he feels like it.
Niles: I have noticed.
Fran: It really hurts too, because concubines at least have a sex-life.
Niles: Oh Miss Fine, your time will come.
Fran: If I had a penny for every time someone said that to me, I wouldn't have to be working as his nanny. That's all I am to him, his nanny.
Niles: Miss Fine, why don't you tell him how you feel?
Fran: I can't, because he doesn't give me two seconds!
Niles: (Holding her hand) Oh Miss Fine.
Fran: Niles, I have been thinking. This is painful to say, but what would you say if I told you I was moving?
Niles: Miss Fine, where?
Fran: LA.
Niles: LA? That's 2,000 miles away.
Fran: I know, but I need a fresh start. I need to go somewhere I am appreciated.
Niles: Miss Fine, this is all so sudden.
Fran: No it's not, I am not leaving until tonight.
Niles looks at her.
Fran: What?
Niles: Tonight?
Fran: Yeah, everything is all paid for. Speaking of which, I've got to go pack. Bye.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fran is in her room diligently packing all of her stuff. The more she thinks of moving, the more depressed she becomes.
Fran: There, that's the last suitcase. It's time.
Fran walks past Max's bedroom, thinks, and decides to go in and give him one last kiss on the cheek. She opens the door, and finds him fast asleep, nestled in the covers. She walks over, and finds herself whispering in his ear.
Fran: I want you to know a few things before I go. Number 1, I love you and will always love you no matter what. Number 2, I couldn't wait forever Mr. Sheffield, you completely ignore me. Number 3, take good care of our kids, and once in a while spend some time with them.
She kisses him on the lips, and exits to catch her plane.
Fran rushes to the airport to go on her plane to LA. As they are taking off, she remembers the good times she had with Max. Soon, she feels a tear roll down her cheek.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Niles: Sir, how is the show coming?
Max: It's done, but I have been wondering where Miss Fine went.
Niles: Sir, she swore me to secrecy, but I must tell you.
Max: Well, what is it?
Niles: She has moved...........out.
Max: (hiding how upset he is) Oh really, where?
Niles: It's kind of far.
Max: Where is it?
Niles: Los Angeles.
Max: Where?! (Clearing his throat) Where in LA?
Niles: I don't know yet sir.
Max: Why?
Niles: She felt as if you didn't care about her.
Max: Well that's not true! I was becoming quite fond of Miss Fine.
Niles: Also, sir.........I am leaving on my vacation to the Bahamas today.
Max: You are?
Niles: Sir, I told you about it 2 months ago.
Max: Well who's going to take care of the children?
Niles: Sir, I am sure you will find someone. Well, I better go sir, my plane leaves in 2 hours. Bye.
Max: All right, see ya old man.
Niles: Sir?
Max: What?
Niles: Get her back.
Max: I most certainly will not, she went and that was her decision.
Niles: Whatever sir.
After Niles leaves, Max slumps down in his chair. "Could he be lying?" he thought to reassure himself. "Has Niles ever lied?" he thought again. After he could not contain himself with these thoughts anymore, he decides to take a little trip into Fran's room. He drags himself out of the hallway, and up the stairs into her bedroom. "This is the moment of truth." he thought. He opens her closet to find........nothing, but a tape. He picks it up to find a sticky on it saying "Listen to this sir." He goes back down stairs, pops it in his stereo. It says:
"I want you to know a few things before I go. Number 1, I love you and I always will love you no matter what, Number 2, I couldn't wait forever Mr. Sheffield, you completely ignored me..........................." (What she said to him before she left, while he was sleeping)
As he was listening he felt tears rolling down his tired eyes. He finally looked down, and realized a puddle of tears that was on him and the desk. "How could you listen to C.C.?!" he thought to himself. "How did you let her manipulate you like that!?" he said between sobs to himself. "Well you are going to get her back, and just take the children with you!" Speaking of children, they were going to be home from school any minute. "I better go clean up!"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
He steps out of the shower just as he hears the door slam. He throws some clothes on, and walks downstairs.
Max: Hello children!
Maggie: What are you saying "Hi" to us for?
Max: What, I shouldn't say "Hi" to my own children!?
Brighton: It's not that, it's just that you never do. You are always buried in your work.
Max: Well, that's going to change.
Gracie comes up to her father, and kisses him on the cheek.
Gracie: We missed you Daddy!
Max almost starts to break down again. When did he have time to raise such sweet beautiful children? Then it just occured to him, he didn't raise them. When he comes to this realization, it overpowers him with sadness. All he can do is give his children hugs and kisses.
Maggie: Dad, where is Fran?
Max: Miss Fine has left us children.
Brighton: What, where did she go?
Max: She moved to LA.
Gracie: Why!?
Max: Well, it wasn't you at all. She left because of me.
Brighton: What did you do to her, Dad?
Max: I have been neglecting her, because of my new show. She took it personally.
Maggie: I would too. We all know how much you love Fran, Dad.
Max: Well......um......but........
Maggie: Dad, we are starving, how about some dinner. Where is Niles?
Max: He is on his trip. I guess I am cooking dinner tonight.
All kids in unison: Oh my God!!!
Max: What, there is a first time for everything. Give me a chance.
Brighton: All right Dad, but if we get food poisoning............
Max: You won't.
Brighton: All right.
They all file out into the kitchen, where Max starts, what is going to be, a very long night.
Max: All right, now where is the bread?
Maggie: In the bread box Dad?
Max: All right.
Gracie: What are we having?
Max: Sandwiches.
Brighton: What kind?
Max: Bread.
Maggie: The mustard and meats are in the fridge, Dad.
Max: Oh, thanks.
Maggie: Sure.
After an hour of waiting, the children got their sandwiches.
Brighton: Dad, I think that you should go get her back.
Max: What would I do with you?
Maggie: We'll come with you.
Gracie: Yeah!!
Max: Naah, let her come here.
Brighton: You assume too much Dad.
Max: You are right about that one, maybe we should go. It has been a year since we were in LA.
Maggie: Cool.
Max: Go upstairs and pack children, we are getting Miss Fine back.
Max feels a tug on his suit jacket.
Gracie: Daddy, do you really love Fran?
Max: (hesitantly) Um...I......
Gracie: Come on Dad, you can lie to anyone but me about these sort of things.
Max: Well....Um.........
Gracie: Come on...
Max: Yes.
Grace: I thought so.
Max: Not a word to your brother and your sister, deal?
Grace: That's OK, they already know also.
Max: What? How?
Grace: How do you think? Niles.
Max: Oy. Well go on up and pack sweet heart.
Grace: Dad?
Max: Yes?
Grace: I love you and I just want you to express your feelings so you can be happy.
Max: I love you too sweet heart, I always have and always will. Go on up and pack.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
By the time they finally got going, it was almost 10 o'clock at night. The cabbie was driving as fast as a possibly could, but Maxwell was still yelling at him.
Max: Come on , we are going to miss our flight.
Cabbie: Sir, I am going as fast as possibly can, this schmuck in front of me is going about 2 miles per hour!
Max: I am sorry , it's just that I let the best thing in my life walk out the door.
Cabbie: Huh?
Max: I am sorry, never mind.
By the time they had reached the airport, it was 1 o'clock in the morning! The Sheffield's were scheduled to leave at 1:15.
Max: Come on children, we really need to move!!!
Gracie: We are coming Daddy, it's really hard to keep running.
Max: I know, but you must!
They come across a baggage clerk.
Max: Here, all of the forms are filled out!! (he practically throws the baggage at the clerk).
They keep running, Maxwell looks at his watch, 1:14.
Max: Damn!! Come on children, keep moving.
Maggie: We are going as fast as we can Dad.
They finally reach the gate.
Max: Did we miss the plane? (catching his breath)
Attendant: No.... you just made it.
Max: Thank God!
Attendant: I just need your tickets please.
Max: All right, here you go.
Attendant: Thank you Sir, go right in.
Max and the kids run, find their seats, and fasten their seat belts.
Max: We made it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fran is unpacking her things and getting settled into her small apartment, in downtown LA.
Fran: Well still no call from Mr Sheffield, I wonder if he even realizes that I am gone? Oh well. I'll just watch some TV.
Fran flips the switch on, and learns very quickly how lonely it can be to be on your own. She thinks to herself:
'What am I thinking? I have wanted to live all by myself since I was 14.' her mind automatically flushed that vote of confidence down the toilet by saying , 'You miss him.'
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Max and the kids are fast asleep in their plush first class seats, when the pilot comes on over the intercom.
Pilot: This is your pilot speaking, we are now approaching LAX. Please put all of your trays in an upright position. Thank you for flying United Airlines.
Max and the kids are now partially awake. Max looks at the time.....according to his watch it is 5 a.m. He sits back in his chair and begins to fall asleep again, until the plane comes to an abrupt landing and wakes him up. It takes the plane a while to taxi around, and then finally parks. Max and the kids drag themselves out of the plane and down to get their luggage. It took Max and the kids an hour to get their luggage, and to call a taxi. The taxi then took them to the hotel. As soon as they get to their room, they all stop dead in their tracks and collapse on their beds.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fran decides that it would be a good idea to go around and meet people in the building, just to make some new friends. She walked over to the first door, and knocked. A handsome man answers the door, she thought 'God he looks familiar.'
Man: Hello, how may I help you? (In a British Accent)
Fran: Hello I am Fran Fi.......
Fran stops dead in the middle of her sentence, it was almost a dead-ringer of Max! Even with a British accent.
Man: I am sorry, I didn't catch your last name.
Fran: (Staring in amazement) Fine.
Man: I am sorry?
Fran: Oh....it's.....Fine.
Man: I know, but what's your last name?
Fran: Fine is my last name.
Man: Oh, I am sorry. My name is Martin Shafaft.
Fran: Martin Shafaft?
Martin: Yes. Pardon my staring, but you have a very beautiful face.
Fran: Why thanks.
Martin: Sure, would you like to maybe get together sometime?
Fran: Sure.
Martin: How about Saturday? We will go to the mall, and have a cup of coffee?
Fran: Great, what time?
Martin: How about 4:00?
Fran: Sounds good, nice meeting you Martin.
Martin: You too Fran.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Max looks at his watch, and realizes how late it is. The children are still fast asleep. 'Now how am I going to find Miss Fine in this city?' He paces around the hotel room, and decides that it would be silly to start looking for her today, the whole day is gone. He looks around, and decides that he is still tired. He is about to lay on the bed, when he looks at his sweet children fast asleep. They were such angels, he had neglected them all of these years. He had never paid attention to them as they were growing up, and now they almost were all grown up. 'What happened to the time?' He thought to himself. This made him not only more upset, but also a lot more tired. He laid himself on the bed and fell fast asleep.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fran wakes up from a sound sleep, and realizes 'Today is Saturday........ Martin.' She jumps in the shower, and begins to get ready for what is going to be, a very long day.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gracie is the first to wake Maxwell up , and she says:
Gracie: Daddy wake up, we have to go find Fran today!
Max: Huh, oh good morning sweetheart. I was thinking that we will go find Miss Fine tomorrow, maybe we will go to the mall today.
Gracie: OK, that sounds cool.
Max: All right, now go wake up your brother and sister and tell them to get ready.
Gracie: All right Daddy.
She gives him a kiss, that warms Maxwell's heart, and she goes upstairs.
Max: Gracie!
Gracie: Yeah Daddy?
Max: I love you.
Gracie: (Smiling) I love you too.
It took the kids a couple of hours to get ready. When they were finally on their way to the mall it was around 3:45.
