This story takes place after Fran and Maxwell had been dating. For some reason, whether they didn't want it to or because they weren't ready yet, the relationship doesn't work out. And Fran winds up leaving.

It has been four years since Fran has left and she decided to go to a resturant. Little did she know that her friend Jacob would be there too. Jacob had been Maxwell's best friend for about seven years. Every now and then the two of them would get together and play a game of pool. Jacob was having lunch and as he goes to leave he notices Fran sitting at a table. He makes his way over to see her.

"Fran? Is that really you?" he asked cautiously. It looked like Fran only different. Her hair was flatter and her style had changed. In stead of her usual short skirts and halter tops, she was wearing a business type of suit. She looked like someone who has changed a lot.

Fran looked up and saw the face of her friend. "Yes Jacob it's really me." To say that Jacob was taken for a loop at the sight of her would have been an under statement. "Fran, how have you been? What have you been up to?" He asked still in shock. Fran smiled and gestured for him to sit down. "Well I've been traveling around a lot. I went to England for a few years and then came back and went down south for a little bit. I started a new company and we've been opening in little places here and there." This news shocked Jacob immensely. "England?!" Fran giggled at his surprise.

"Yes England and a little bit of Texas too," she added. "I started my own company and those are the first places I wanted to be. There are so many people in those areas." Jacob knew for sure that this was not the same Fran he remembered from years ago. He was impressed. "That's amazing Fran. But you still haven't answered my first question. How are you doing?"

Fran got a far away look on her face. "How am I doing? Well sometimes it's hard to tell. I like to think that I'm fine but I..." Fran paused before she said too much. Jacob was curious as to what she was going to say so he pressed on. "But you what, Fran? Please tell me what you were going to say."Jacob begged. Fran looked Jacob in the eyes and sighed. "But I still miss him more than ever. And I know I shouldn't bury myself in my work but that's what seems to be happening. Because when I'm working, it doesn't hurt as bad." Jacob just nodded his head for he understood how she felt. "I still need him so much. I don't even know why we let each other go. Nothing's changed. Deep down the fire in my soul still burns for him. And even if it takes forever say I'll still be here. If you see him." She got up and gave Jacob a hug. "Thank you," she whispered. Jacob's couldn't find his vioce at first. "No problem," he managed to get out and then Fran left.

At the Sheffield Manion:

The phone rang "Sheffield residence," Niles said as he answered the phone. "Oh good afternoon, Mr. Chambers. Yes Mr. Sheffield is at home. If you will hold I will put him on for you," Niles rambled through his speech. He put the phone on hold and went off to find Mr. Sheffield.

Maxwell was in his office when Niles came to the door. Knock knock Maxwell looked up. "Excuse me, sir, but Mr. Chambers is on the phone and requests to speak with you." And with that Niles left the room. Maxwell put his glasses down on his desk and picked up the phone.

"Jacob how have you been?" He said cheerfully. "That's good? Am I free this afternoon? A game or two of pool?" Maxwell quickly looked at his schedule. "I'm free in about fifteen minutes for about an hour and a half. Meet you at O'Hara's? Great I'll see you then. Bye" Maxwell hung up the phone and then went to get his coat.

At O'Hara's Maxwell met up with Jacob and they played a game of pool before grabbing a table to sit down. "So Maxwell how have youbeen?" Jacob asked. "Oh I'm doing fine. why?" "I was just asking," Jacob said, "hey do you ever see of Fran?" Maxwell was taken back a little because lately that's the only person he thinks about. "No I haven't. But if you ever see her, you can tell her I think of her from time to time. Ask her if she ever wonders where we both went wrong. But only if you see her. I still want her. I don't know why we let each other go." Maxwell said as his mind drifted back to thoughts of Fran. "If you see her tell her the lights still on for her. And even if it takes forever say I'll still be here. If you see her."

Jacob nodded his head understanding where Maxwell was coming from. "Hey how about another game?" he suggested to get Maxwell's mind off of Fran. It worked and then played another game. As they were leaving Maxwell put his hands in his jacket pockets, "Thanks for listening." Jacob gave a small smile, "Oh no problem." Maxwell smiled too. "Hey if it's alright with you, let's keep all that stuff in there between me and you." Jacob waved it off. "Sure, hey don't worry about it. I'll see ya later."Maxwell walked away and Jacob got into his car. Just then his phone rang. It was Fran.

"Hello"

"Hey I'm glad I caught you. You know what we were talking about early today?"

"Yeah"

"Can we just keep that betwen ourselves?"

"Sure," Jacob said with a sigh.

"Thanks I really aprreciate it."

"I'll see ya later" Jacob said.

"Ok bye." And with that Fran hung up the phone. Jacob just shook his head at his two friends and drove off.

Author's note: I normally don't like stories that in the end Fran and Max don't wind up together so this was a first for me to want to write a story like this. If you liked it or hated it please let me know. Any review is better than no reviews.
