Miss Fine was on her way to pick up her soon-to-be-husband from the theater, when a question came to mind. It was about Maxwell's late wife Sarah. Anyway she arrived at the theater and found her fiancee just sitting there lost in thought. She figured she should suprise him (in her usual manner). She came up behind him and started nibbling his neck. He of course didn't mind even though he jumped at first.
He turned around and met her shy stare, but dazzling smile, one of which he's gotten so used to by now. He just bent down and picked her up by her waist and twirled her around while bringing her back down to meet his mouth in the most intense kiss since yesterday. He gently prodded her lips with his tongue and she accepted with her own. Their tongues slowly entwining with the others. When the broke apart they were both breathing very heavily. He smiled and she smiled. It was the perfect moment for them. Then all of a sudden she gave a little start when she felt something move against thigh. He just crossed his legs and said," Let's go home, PLEASE." She nodded and turned around walking out the door and towards the car.
When they were in the car it was a tad silent because she was driving and really concentrating on not trying to hit a rabbit. He on the other hand was lost in thought about Sarah.
"Fran, when we get home we should talk, because you look as though you want ask me something," said Max in a sweet tone.
"OK, no problem!" she said as they pulled up to the mansion. As they walked in they found that no one was home. Probably off running errands. She went directly to his office with him following behind. When they got to they both sat down and stared at each other for a moment or so.
Then she finally blurted out, "If you don't mind honey, I would like to know all the things about Sarah. Even the bad things. I feel as though I have to know about her before we get married." She looked at shyly with a little twinkle of forgiveness in her eyes. He simply smiled at her and nodded an OK.
"Thank you for caring Fran, you are the most wonderful woman I've ever known. Well, here it goes:
You already know that I met her at a play of mine, and that she wasn't all that good at acting. But what caught my attention was her beautiful heart. She had a heart of gold, it was so pure and loyal. I could tell just by looking at her. You two would've made such lively friends if you ever met. I couldn't help but give her an understudy part to her. She so full of life. It was mesmerizing. After that we hit it off quite well. Then a couple weeks later we started dating. To me it was magical, all those dances and parties we went to were great because I was with her."
"When did you decide to get married?" asked Fran.
"We decided to get married 3 months after we started dating. I know it sounds fast, but we were so in love it great. We went to the Greek Islands for honeymoon, and I know that you probably don't want to hear this but she was so good an enthusiastic in bed. That's where Maggie was conceived. Maggie was born a little early. Because she was born 8 months later. It was so precious with Sarah holding onto Maggie the way she did. Four years later Brighton was born. Even as a toddler he seemed like a prankster. It was almost unreal, it was so glorious. Then another 4 years past and before we knew it there was little Gracie. We had soo much fun raising our kids with such love and vivacity. The kids were always coming to me or her with their problems, Maggie especially. Brighton made us laugh with the humor he got from Sarah. Gracie had my smile and Sarah's blue eyes, with a nose (thank god) from Sarah."
Fran by now had a little bit of misty eyes. "I can see her now when I look at each of their faces, and some old pictures." she said with a glint of tremor in her voice.
They both got up and went out on the terrace outside his office where they just stood there holding each other.
"Our lives were all filled with happiness until the accident." he shuddered at the thought. Fran felt this and reluctantly let go to give him some room to pace. "It was like all the happiness had drained out of the house because we knew that it would be fatal. Even Gracie at 3 years old knew it. It was a drunk driver/hit and run accident. She was driving home that day and all of sudden this drunk driver came from around the corner and didn't stop, leaving the 2 cars pounded together. The driver of the other car saw blood in the next car and ran. She sat in the car still alive. The ambulance came and yet she was still very much alive.
"As I got to the hospital and asked for Sarah Sheffield, I'm her husband. The nurse took me straight in. There she was lying there with tubes coming out of her whatever there was. She was so pale and her lips were so blue, it was unimaginable." He said this with a tear rolling down his cheek. "She smiled at me and I smiled back. All she said the minute before she died was "I love you with all my heart. Good-bye darling.................. before I knew it I was crying like a baby with my children in my arms in my bedroom. Before long we were thinking of all the memories we shared with their mother and my wife Sarah." He then looked down with so many tears streaming down his face. And what he saw broke his heart. Fran was sitting there crying her eyes out whispering, "I'm so sorry," over and over again.
He picked her up and gathered her into his arms and they hugged eachother for a good 45 minutes. He whispered in her ear "It's not your fault, but I'm glad you asked that question. I haven't had a good cry in years with someone I love and adore." He looked down smiling at her, and she smiled back and said, " Sarah's the most wonderful woman I've ever heard of. And you were wrong I'm not the most wonderful woman you've ever known, Sarah is." She said with two more tears rolling down her cheeks and a bright smile on her face.
Maxwell Beverly Sheffield just stared at the woman that was in his tight embrace with a few more tears rolling down his cheeks. He quietly kisses her and then says, "Thank You sweetheart, that's very bold and forthcoming of you."
"Hopefully. Even though I didn't know her, I hope it's ok for me to say "I love her too, because of who she was and what she did for your heart." Maxwell stood there and said, "Yes that's perfectly fine with me." But then 3 voices came from behind them and all said at once "and us as well." The 3 children enveloped Fran in a great big hug full of Happiness again.
"Thank god you came into our lives.........MOM," Gracie exclaimed. Fran was just simply over joyed at what Gracie just said. Then all five of them hugged for a good 5 minutes. Then after that family session they went out to eat all of them content with their lives.
Only once in a while she still asks about Sarah.
