Mixing feelings

Stuart smiled and kisses her forehead.

Niles comes down with the 5 suitcases and in the middle if the staircase he "accidentally" drops them.

Niles daydreams and sighs.

The house to himself for 4 long weeks. He smiled, he was going to have such a good time... all alone, with no trouble, or making now one but himself coffee, or dinner, he could go out, don't clean and make it all in the last day, smoke Mr. Sheffield’s cigars and drink his best brandy, and he wasn't around, all alone....

Ding-Dong.

Darn!!!!!!!!!!!

He looks back; C.C is at the other side of the door. "Why do you make this to me?" Niles said skyward.

He looked at her again and she dings again, he turned his back and left.

He smiles and then goes to open the door. She comes in and hands her coat to him.

She glares at him.

He looked at her and sighed.

Niles looked skyward once more and smiled. He closed the door behind him and imagined a whole month without her; it was going to be bloody sweet!

She took her briefcase and got some papers out, then she looked to the door, her heart felt joy or something like that... One month without Rubbermaid, this was going to be heaven!

She started reading the papers really slowly; after all she had nothing to do for the rest of the day, hasn’t she?...

The hours passed slowly, to Niles’ contentment. He made some food for him, Babcock didn’t want a thing, despise the fact that he offered her. Hey, at least he tried! The Sheffields were not even in the middle of the trip and Mrs. Sheffield had called three times to make sure her mother wasn’t there, that Niles wasn’t bored, and that he and Miss Babcock were still alive. Mr. Sheffield was the one to hang up the three times and Niles chuckled to himself that the both were so different and such a good match.

Niles poured him some scotch, took the paper and sat in the kitchen table just relaxing, things couldn’t get any better. After 5 years Mr. Sheffield had finally, FINALLY! Made his move. They were happily married since then; despise, of course, all the failed attempts of Fran in getting pregnant. The kids were so grown up, Maggie was happy with Michael, sure he envied him, young, rich, model, he was one of those guys who did nothing and won everything, and him, who killed himself to get his boss a cigar got nothing, well six bucks an hour weren’t enough anymore. After being Maxwell’s best friend for all his life he needed some reward.

He sipped the whiskey just to notice it was gone.

And now the money problem, he seriously needed that money... these were his vacations but he needed so desperately the cash that he had to do some kind of work... perhaps looking something as a butler for 10, or more bucks the hour would do it....

C.C was furious, she walked through one side of the office to the other, just thinking of the best way of telling that damn butler how much she hated him that moment!

He took her coat and threw it on top of her.

Niles smiled sitting in the second step of the stair, he loved doing that word fight with her. It was like an inner pleasure traveled through his body every time she responded to one of his remarks. He remembered the time she was in The Place, he had really missed her company, but he was no one to complain, after all he had being the mayor cause she was send there in first place.

He absolutely didn’t mean to forget telling her about the meeting, but at this time it was something totally unconscious. But he had other things in mind now Babs had leave... Niles walked to the kitchen took a red pen and reached for the news paper looking in the job application.

"Bell boy needed in the "Four Seasons hotel" good payment. Full time job..." Could be... Babcock would have a heck of a time watching him doing that.

"Help wanted bridal shop in Flushing, Queens. Part time job, $5.oo per hour..." Mhm...Curious. Could it be?

"Dancer needed that can perform "Old time R&R" in a sexy way. Requirements; sexy & without commitment..." Niles laughed hard at this one remembering certain song, certain movie & certain blond.

"Butler wanted, full time job, we require a persons with skills, capacity and experience in the job. $ 10.00 per hour, payment negotiable..." He circled it in red and took the phone.

Dialed.

A second passed.

The voice chuckled.

And they both laughed until Niles hang up.

Ok, the money issue was solved. But he was out of vacations! He was going to find a way of convincing Mr. Sheffield that he needed other month of rest.

Niles woke up from a dream he couldn’t remember. His breathing was heavy and he had sweat all over his forehead. He looked at the time, 7:23. He had to get ready for the interview for his new job. He stood up and went to the bathroom, took a cold shower and loose track of time.

He took a cup a coffee dressed as the usual, took the news paper and read nothing; actually he wasn’t in the mood for reading. He sipped once more and finished the cup. He checked everything was in order because he wasn’t going to be back, at least, until Saturday. He took his suitcase and made his way to the foyer.

Ring!!!!

He put the bag in the floor and answers the phone.

Niles closed the door and made his way to the limo.

The day was cloudy and some raindrops filled the front glass of the limousine. But it didn’t really matter because he had arrived at his destiny. He looked at the address in the paper and the address is the mansion; matched.

He stepped out and ringed the doorbell. A tall handsome forty something butler, with black hair and blue eyes opened the door.

A young man of around 20 years came running from the hall. He was dressed just as Nathaniel was, in a black suit.

For one second Niles felt that Timothy was exactly like him. And he smiled for that.

And Niles did.

Niles looked around.

Niles didn’t have the chance to figure which one was which one because Nath was already out of there. They took at least an hour to cover the whole house, the bedrooms, the bathrooms, the office, etc.

Niles came out of his room after getting his things ready and run into Timothy that was running from the other side of the corridor.

They walked towards the office, once in Timothy opened the door that lead to the back yard, and to the pool. There she was, a 37 year old brunette swimming in a tiny bikini. Niles’ eyes open wide and Tim laughed quietly.

They took the martinis as flies would get honey. Niles looked around, they were all debutants, and Georgina smiled to him and came closer.

There wasn’t that much people, 10 maximum. But they talked and fight and screamed more than Miss Fine’s family... bad example. Suddenly the doorbell rang. Everyone was quiet. Georgina looked nervous. Nathaniel went to open the door, Tim stood at his side.

He opened the door. Niles wanted to see what a big deal everyone made for this. He saw Tim took some bags and went with them to one of the guests rooms. Then from the dark rainy night a woman came...

No way, it couldn’t be!!!!!!!!!

"I new that some people here were familiar! They are the Babcocks!!"

C.C gasped, looked at him just as uncomfortable as he looked at her. This couldn’t be happening. But it was so, let’s enjoy it!

Niles took a deep breath and went into the kitchen.

He didn’t know why but his blood was slowly boiling.

Niles laughed hard.

Niles thought. Every moment he had cheered with Babcock crossed his mind.

One memory pop in his head, them, together in the living room of the Sheffields. – I loathe you – I despise you – Servant – Trollop- Bell Boy – Brunette...

Niles looked back at them as soon as the word hot was mentioned.

Niles and Timothy went to the dining room. All the Babcocks were sat around the table. Niles glared to C.C and she glared back.

They served and then Edgar, Angelo, Nath, Tim and Niles just stood behind the chairs.

Niles smiled and tried to maintain composure but this was just too good, Nath gave him a warning look.

Angelo came closer to Niles.

She looked in her pocket.

Niles closed the door as the last guest left. He sighed and rolled his eyes when he saw Babcock sitting on the couch boozing. Nath looked at him and said.

He got near at her.

A moment passed.

She walked in and quietly closed the door. When the door was closed he shivered, went to take a cold shower and then to sleep.

Niles woke up and looked around, the place wasn’t familiar and for one second he thought he was lost. But then it all came to mind. He was working for Babcock’s cousin, then that made him Babcock’s butler too!

He looked at the time and hurried in getting dressed, he was a little late.

He arrived at the kitchen and everyone was taking a cup of coffee.

Niles dialed.

Niles chuckled.

She said as she hang up and made herself ready for the romantic dinner she was having with Max. 6 hours difference, remember that.

Niles giggled.

Nath came in with two trays on his hands and Tim followed him with two more.

The words were cut by the door Niles went through, walking towards the dining room were the cousins were having breakfast. Niles hear them talking and hid behind a door to listen to the conversation.

Niles looked at C.C; her eyes were lost inside the coffee cup. Then she reacted.

Niles a little taken aback came behind the door and glared at the both of them. Gigi giggled. C.C put her cup for more coffee and Niles served it.

Niles though of the coincidences, she and him, both together in a place where neither of them were supposed to find each other. If Mr. Sheffield had paid him, if they hadn’t gone in that trip, if he had agreed in going with them, if for one year she hadn’t assist to this stupid family reunion, if he didn’t bought the paper the day before, if he hadn’t forget the meeting, if... That was the real reason why he was there? The money? At this time he wasn’t sure anymore.

Babcock glared at him.

Tim appeared running from down stairs. He looked at Niles who was still looking at the spot where C.C had gone through. He knew, as everyone in this house, the secrets of her life and now one day a man arrived and every secret started making sense, the puzzle was getting together slowly. Timothy had grown inside the Babcock’s family, actually he had a thing for Kiky, but since he was a little boy they taught him that classes didn’t mixed... Every one, especially Nath had put especial emphasis on that, since he heard about that innocent kiss between the both of them... but who knew, maybe Nath was wrong, for once maybe that strange man that walked a day ago through that door had all the answers.

Tim smiled and kept doing his work.

Almost a week had passed and Niles was certainly making more money that in the Sheffields. They had raised his salary already, not even a week had passed. (Did I say that twice?!)

Niles was having fun, as everyone else since he had arrived. They were chipper and Tim had learned some things that no even Nath could have taught him.

He turned it on quietly.

Both put their ears really near the intercom.

Niles laughed and Tim shushed him.

They keep listening.

Niles and Tim looked at each other smiling. How could Nath hide something like that?

There was a long silence and they heard a sigh from the other side of the intercom.

Niles rolled his eyes and as fast as he could, got Tim out of there. Tim followed him.

He walked towards the office.

Gigi cleaned her throat, tension was too high. She smiled in the fake Babcock’s way and pulled them apart.

He looked at Babcock who turned her eyes from him, looking through the window.

And he left. C.C looked into Gigi’s eyes, with such anger and hate that it almost scares Gigi. C.C got up and went out to the back yard.

She ran through some trees and sat in the grass, it was moist, but it didn’t matter. She put her hair behind her ears and though.

"Why?" was the question that surrounded her mind. Why everything had to happen this way? Why she didn’t take those damn tickets to Cancun her mother offered her? Why she had preferred to spend her vacations with her cousin, as she always did? Why Niles appeared here? Why he took just this job? Why, out of all the places in the world he could be he had to be right here?

C.C looked better and saw Nath’s face with some dirt. He was wearing an apron and was doing some gardening.

C.C was off in her thoughts again when she heard Nath’s voice calling for her.

She laughed. A butler being nice to her...weird, but she liked it.

C.C came down stairs in a hurry, and maybe for that reason missed the look Niles’ eyes were giving her. She was wearing a blued dress, with low cut, that almost reach the floor. The parts below the thighs were transparent blue and black fabric. She looked like a witch and the dress made the color of her eyes look even prettier and her skin appear "white chocolate", which made Niles remember how much he hated that French man.

Gigi was wearing a red dress with long sleeves and without back. It was below the knee and it fit her dreamily. Nath’s jaw drop when she came downs stairs with her brown hair in a stylish pony tail and claiming for the time.

"Sexy, very sexy" were Angelo’s thoughts when he picked through the closest door. Nor Tim, Greg, or Edgar were missing this for the world. They grinned as both ladies came downstairs looking like princesses, Babcock princesses but princesses nonetheless.

Nath took C.C by her hand and showed her the way out. Opened the door and went outside. Niles and Gigi walked arm in arm behind them and she noticed when her date started staring at her cousin’s back side.

The limo arrived in that chilly night where the moon was full and the stars were strangely brighter.

So he let that one pass and C.C got into the Limo comfortably. He manage for Nath to go through the other door that way he was sit next to his nemesis.

Once in the trip was quiet. One slip of her hand and occasionally their hands met, causing both little electroshocks; but one time, without noticing it their hands joined, and when it was time to go out because they had arrived they made as nothing had happened like so many times before.

The four men, with four other women came closer to their table.

Niles looked at Nath and raised an eyebrow. C.C looked at Gigi and they both retained their laughter.

They did. Niles quietly notices how Daniel looked at C.C with a smile in his lips.

Niles wasn’t listening at all what Summer was saying about dying and hair care. He had his mind focus in the guy C.C was dancing with, and his hands movement, that were getting pretty low... He was about to go there and hit the man in the nose when C.C ended the dancing. Daniel laughed and checked out C.C’s backside as she sat next to the butler.

He grinned seeing she was trapped without any insults. One by one the people in the table started to disappear: dancing, until there were only Gigi, Nath, Niles and C.C.

She looked at him and smiled. They laughed, each other remembering different things, with one thing in common; both were in each other thoughts. When they finished laughing Niles took C.C’s hand and said.

He took her by her hip and she put her arms around his neck and looked deeply in his eyes smiling, he smiled back. The music slowly finished and Niles looked to the band playing. Just now they had started dancing the music stopped, amusing.

She looked from the corner of her eyes at Daniel and Summer dancing so close. Gigi had said she could use the butler to put Danny jealous but it wasn’t working. She looked back at Niles and wondered if he had listened to that part of the conversation. She felt as Niles’ hands brought her near to him.

Slowly another song started. C.C looked at the band and listen well at the melody... it was that song... The one she thought it was made for herself and had listened in the lonely days in "The Place". She shook her head; she didn’t want to remember so horrible days.

Niles sensed her uncomfortable. Looked at her as she put her head in his shoulder and he couldn’t believe this was actually happening.

They slowly moved as the lyrics started.

Have you ever had the feeling
That the world's gone and left you behind
Have you ever had the feeling
that you're that close to losing your mind

You look around each corner
Hoping that she's there
You try to play it cool perhaps
Pretend that you don't care

But it doesn't do a bit of good
You got to seek till you find
Are you never unwind

Try to think
That love is not around
Still it's uncomfortably near

My old heart
Ain't gaining no ground
Because my angel eyes ain't here

Angel eyes
That old devil sent
They glow unbearably bright
Need I say
That my love's misspent
Misspent with angel eyes tonight

So drink up all you people
Order anything you see
Have fun you happy people
The drink and the laugh's on me

Pardon me
But I gotta run
The fact's uncomfortably clear
Gotta find
Who's now number one
And why my angel eyes ain't here
Tell me why my angel eyes ain't here
Excusez moi my angel eyes ain't here
Excuse me while I disappear

The song ended and it took C.C and Niles a while until they realized that it had. When they did C.C just got out of Niles’ embrace and without looking back she went to sit in the table.

C.C glared at him noticing he knew Nath was a butler but totally bought the crap about Niles. Mark Roger and Andrew stared at C.C.

C.C frowned and Niles smiled shaking his head.

Niles looked around, so did Andrew.

They all look. They weren’t at the dance floor or the table. C.C and Niles shared concerned looks; both knew what they were doing.

  • Shame on them – Daniel said kissing Summer’s hand but without taking his eyes off C.C. Niles noticed that and tried to change the conversation.
  • The night went on slowly. C.C trying to talk about business, neither of the men interested in the topic. Niles started getting jealous of Daniel that looked at C.C all the time, but tried to ignore him. The night went on slow and the guys started leaving with their partners one by one until there were just C.C, Niles, Daniel and Summer.

    Danny looked at the time.

  • My is really getting late - he said in his best ironic tone, the one he had been using all night – Darling Summer, why don’t you go to the limo I’ll join you there –
  • Okay but don’t take too long – she blew him a kiss and he blew it back.
  • A soon as she was out of sight Daniel centred his attention back in Babcock.

Niles noticing this looked at his clock too.

  • Miss Babcock is really getting late why don’t we just go –
  • Okay Niles, for once I’m totally with you –
  • They stood up and Danny did the same.

  • After you, C.C – he said too politely.
  • Niles made his way to the door as Daniel sign the check. He was out when he saw the limo coming.

  • Babcock there is... – he turned back just to find she wasn’t there.
  • He went back into the restaurant and saw no clue of her or Danny. He cross the entire place but saw nothing of them until he passed through the balcony and saw a blond in a blue dress; there they were!

He quietly came closer to the window and heard.

  • But think of about it Babcock, we could be happy together –
  • Danny I told you I didn’t want anything with you –
  • But I do with you, didn’t you noticed me flirting with you all night? – She looked at the darkness of the night.
  • No of course not, you were too busy with that old writer, what’s his name? Neil?
  • It’s Niles and I do most certainly not have a thing for him! We hate each other! –
  • What about the cheek to cheek? –
  • You danced with that slut, don’t come to me with whom I can or not dance –
  • There was a long silence and Niles thought he might interrupt then but Daniel was faster. He looked at the stars, then at C.C’s face, sighed and said.

  • I love you –
  • C.C looked amazed. She lost equilibrium and almost falls.

  • Wha...wha...what did you said? –
  • I have been in love with you ever since I saw that milky skin and those blue eyes looking at me. Please I beg you; say you love me back –
  • Niles was speechless, he stood there without words and with his heart pounding miles per hour, and a second heart attack came to mind. He wanted to interrupt and his body screams to take her out of there but he didn’t move and in that chilly night where the stars looked strangely bright he waited.

  • I...I...I can’t, look Daniel I don’t know what to say –
  • May be this will help refresh your mind –
  • He came closer slowly, to let her go if she wanted but she didn’t move.

  • Say you don’t want to and I won’t do it –
  • She just stood there and closed her eyes. Danny kissed her passionately, but she didn’t move. Niles jaw drop open "Caca do a nono in the balcony" he was about to say.

    Then Danny stopped.

  • Call me if you change your mind – and he left. He was near the window and Niles was thinking in coming in when...
  • Danny!!! –
  • He looked back.

  • What? –
  • No –
  • No what? –
  • I can’t do it, you don’t love me; it’s just lust. Besides you had your chance and lost it, no one assures me it won’t happen again. Look Daniel if you want you can go to a hotel with hot Summer with you but you won’t get into my panties that easily –
  • Danny smiled.

  • I knew all along you were a challenge, lets hope that writer you claim to hate gets lucky tonight –
  • C.C grinned and said.

  • I hope some day you stop being so pathetic –
  • Won’t happen, by the way you truly look hot tonight –
  • Thank you –
  • Niles chose that moment to bust in.

  • Witch! I’ve been looking for you all over the place! –
  • Coming Hazel! –
  • Danny took a last look at C.C and was about to speak when Niles glared at him.

  • Summer’s waiting for you –
  • Goodnight Neil –
  • It’s Niles and it certainly is a bloody good night –
  • C.C walked as fast as she could to the car and Niles followed her so relieved. Once in she sighed.

  • When someone sighs can mean two things, one; you are in love or two you are too fat. I’ll go for the second one –
  • She didn’t answer and it concerned Niles. "Could it be the other one? No, no way" He sighed.

  • Go for the second one too – She evilly laughed.
  • Hey you were awake! I though your kind sleeps with the eyes open!- He said looking outside to the sky: full moon. She was looking the same thing.
  • Niles turned and caught her looking to the sky too, so beautiful, the moon light made her look like and angel.

  • I’ll make it shorter for both of us. "Oh look full moon, when does the hair starts growing? I don’t want to be here to see it... Listen? Barks, they’re calling you. Why don’t you..."
  • She couldn’t finish because his lips interrupted in mid-sentence. She felt his warm lips upon hers and electricity went all over her body. She felt his hands around her waist and then, when he said her name in between kissed she went mad.

She put her arms around his neck and caressed his hair loosing completely track of time. He stroked her back in little circles and the sweet taste of her mouth drove him wild. He parted her lips with his tongue and let the dance of mouths start. Nothing ever felt this good or this right. Nothing ever felt so nice. Nothing ever felt like what they were feeling now.

She gave up. Everything they have lived crossed her mind but not even that had space now, now that he fulfilled her thoughts.

He wanted her so badly, right now... right there.

  • Mr. Niles, Miss Babcock we’re here –
  • They both got separated, breathing heavily. Niles looked down at her and sat removing the lipstick of his mouth. She put her hair in order and opened the door. So did him.

They quietly walked to the door. He searched for the keys in his pocket but her hands stopped him. She made him look at her and got uncomfortably near him. She looked at him and kissed his lips lightly. He closed his eyes and when he opened them again, the door was opened and no one was there.

He sighed. He certainly wasn’t fat. He looked at the sky and found no track of the moon which made him doubt everything had happened.

C.C woke up yelling from a horrible nightmare. She sighed seeing it was just that, and in relief she sat in her bed remembering what had being so awful. She closed her eyes and opened them again, ready to have a cold shower.

  • So you never actually told us what happened last Saturday, Niles– Angelo asked as he set the table.
  • Nothing really, we went, danced, I embarrassed her in front of her ex and we left –
  • Oh... Wait! Daniel Goldwater was there? – Edgar asked.
  • You know him? –
  • He used to date Miss Babcock but there is nothing she has that Miss Beauvais doesn’t want so...-
  • She left him because he cheated her with her cousin... – Niles had the whole picture now.
  • But she convinced Ms Babcock that Daniel had the entire fault – Juliet added.
  • Sure nothing happened between the both of them that night? – Angelo tried to figure.
  • No, nothing – he lied.
  • Shame –
  • Niles looked at Edgar.

  • Why? –
  • They made a cute couple –
  • They did not! –
  • Niles? Are you jealous of Mr. Goldwater? –
  • I’m most certainly not... Me jealous of that rat? Please–
  • There was a long silence as they ended setting the table. Juliet went to the kitchen to help her husband do the breakfast, Edgar went upstairs to make Ms. Beauvais bedroom and Angelo stood there with Niles.

  • I was once in love... –
  • Niles looked at him.

  • Where is she now? –
  • He... –
  • Oh, sorry –
  • I don’t know, we never got together. He probably is a big manager, or an actor, acting was his dream –
  • Why you never told him you loved him? –
  • Maybe because I thought the time wasn’t right, but it was never right, and one day he left. I never got the change to say good bye either –
  • Then that’s why Nath don’t like being around you? –
  • Hum?? O yeah, that’s the reason. He doesn’t like me being around Tim either but Juliet and Greg have no problem with it, besides Tim is very much in love with Kiky.-
  • Kiky? Miss Babcock’s cousin? –
  • Yep, but help with help. After all classes don’t mix, right? –
  • Right – he said as his words faded in the air.
  • C.C arrived at the dinning room as Edgar served the breakfast.

  • Good morning, darling, how was your night? – Gigi said sipping her coffee.
  • Good... – she said looking to her plate, without really wanting to talk – and yours? –
  • Excellent – she said giggling.
  • Great –
  • Gigi looked as C.C ate with her eyes lost in nowhere. She sipped her coffee without, even, adding sugar.

  • What’s the matter with you, Claire? –
  • Why? Nothing –
  • Something is happening, I can tell –
  • Sod of, will ya! Nothing is wrong with me – She bites something in her plate that Edgar had put in, tasted good. Then she looked at it; Belgian waffles.
  • What day is today? – C.C asked still looking at her plate.
  • Wednesday, why? –
  • Nothing, just wondering – She smiled. Every Wednesday Niles made his waffles, or at least bought them, and for some strange reason that made her feel home.
  • Darling I’m sure something is positively wrong with you –
  • Knock it off, I’m perfectly fine –
  • If you say so. By the way I’m going to make some shopping today, the day is magnificent. Why don’t you come with me? –
  • No thank you, I prefer stay here, read, swim and get some work done if it is possible –
  • You don’t have remedy, always thinking in work. Well I’m done here. Niles! –
  • Niles came from the kitchen.

  • Yes ma’am –
  • Could you retire my things form the table? C.C will probably stay a little longer, I’m going out today so if you have any questions ask Nath – And she went to her room.
  • No problem, ma’am –
  • Being a little busy are we? –
  • Shut up, Babcock –
  • Serve me a martini, now –
  • It’s 10 o’ clock in the morning, –
  • So... –
  • Are you suicidal? –
  • Just after a conversation with you... – She said smiling at him.
  • Don’t make promises you can’t keep – He said serving her some booze.
  • She drank it slowly, maybe too slowly for C.C Babcock. Niles looked as her lips drank the liquor and her tongue moved licking them after leaving the glass in the table. He shook his head and retired the things left.

  • Ask Angelo to join me in the pool, Niles –
  • Angelo? –
  • Are you deaf? –
  • I wish –
  • She made her way to her room and Niles sighed with disbelief.

  • Is there a problem, sir? –
  • Niles looked behind and saw Tim standing in the door way.

  • A problem no, problems yes. I told you already, don’t call me sir, call me Niles. You make me feel old –
  • You are – he said laughing at his own joke.
  • Very funny –
  • No really Niles – They sat – what’s the problem? –
  • I wish I could tell you, but you’re too young to understand –
  • I’m not young! –
  • Yes you’re, Timothy –
  • That’s so unfair, just because I’m the younger here does not mean I’m too young to help in any kind of problems. The only one that treats me like and adult is Nath! And not even him since he heard the Kiky incident! –
  • Kiky incident? – Niles said making as if he didn’t know –
  • You know her, the girl that run off the reunion last week –
  • Yes, certainly. What’s the problem with her? –
  • She is not the problem, her mother and family is. The Babcocks are so uptight! –
  • Tell me about it – Niles looked at Tim and saw in him, for a reason he did not get, a lot of himself. It was like looking in a mirror, a very weird one, but a mirror none the less. Then Angelo and Edgar passed laughing and with empty trays in their hands.
  • Angelo! –
  • Yes Niles? –
  • Miss Babcocks wants you to go over the swimming pool with her –
  • Aren’t we lucky? – Edgar added.
  • We? I didn’t hear the name Edgar anywhere –
  • But I can give her something you couldn’t – And they got lost in the hall.
  • Tim stood and said.

  • I should go and help mom and dad with lunch –
  • Yes you should –
  • Today is Helen’s day off so they’re going to need some help, you should help too –
  • I have some things to do, besides is just Miss Babcock eating, you put some poison on it and you’re done – He left almost running, needing to find something out, so he never heard Tim saying Miss Babcock wasn’t the only one in lunch.
  • C.C sat on the edge of the pool; she took a towel and dried her blond hair. Shook her head and laid down letting the sun rays touch her skin, even when she knew she wasn’t going to get tanned.

She heard foot steps. It was Angelo.

  • You needed me, miss? –
  • Yeah, sit here –
  • Angelo sat next to her in a chair.

  • What is it, C.C? –
  • Don’t call me C.C while we’re in this house, I’ve told you a million times –
  • Sorry, miss –
  • Lets see what you have for me –
  • Angelo took a piece of paper form his jacket and handed it to her.

  • Aren’t you hot, with all that clothes on? –
  • Yes, but this is the uniform –
  • C’mon Gigi isn’t here, at least take that jacket off –
  • Angelo hadn’t realized the sun was this heavy until she pronounced it. He took his jacket off and opened the first buttons of his shirt. He looked at her in that red bikini. If he was straight she sure would be in problem. He smiled.

  • What’s so funny? –
  • Nothing – he said with an innocent look. He brushed his dark hair with his fingers.
  • Thanks, Angelo. I appreciate it –
  • Anytime, sweetheart, anytime – He said as he stood, grabbed his jacket putting it over his right shoulder and walking towards the office window.
  • Niles peeked from the office window the whole conversation between the both of them and watches in amassment the complete scene. He saw Angelo coming so he made like he had just arrived there.

  • Hey Niles, going for a talk with the witch? –
  • Something like that – he waited until he was out of sight and got out to the backyard.
  • Niles saw as she opened a little white piece of paper.

  • Damn it! – She yelled, without noticing he was near.
  • She cut it in little pieces and jumped into the pool. She swims to the other edge and gets out for air. Niles just looks at her amazed of the kind of body she had. She removed the water of her eyes and turned to swim some more.

  • Niles! –
  • What? –
  • Since when are you there? –
  • Long enough –
  • You damn excuse for a butler –
  • Isn’t that getting old? –
  • Like you? – She laughed.
  • I’ve been called that twice today – he mumbled to himself.
  • She got out of the water and walked towards the towel. She dries her hair and put the towel in the grass laying down on it.

  • What are you doing here? – She asked without noticing the look in Niles’ eyes.
  • I just came to see how you melted on water, shame you didn’t –
  • He stood up and sat next to her getting his tie off, pulling up his sleeves and opening the first buttons of his shirt, after taking his jacket out, of course. C.C looked at him as he did so; impressed he could be so unprofessional with her.

  • Why were you talking to Angelo? –
  • None of your business –
  • They stayed there in silence looking at the blue sky above them. C.C suddenly remembered her nightmare; a chill went down her spine. Niles noticed it, but kept himself quiet.

  • What time is it, Bell boy? –
  • Almost one –
  • Have to get going –
  • Where? –
  • Get dressed, since when do you care? – She said walking into the mansion covered up with the towel.
  • Since longer than you could imagine – He sighed.
  • He heard someone behind him, turned. Nath was there.

  • I give you an advice, Niles, she is dangerous –
  • Just as her cousin is? Eh, Nath? –
  • Miss Beauvais has nothing to do with Miss Babcock –
  • Of course not, one is a tramp and the other one haven’t get since god knows when – he said laughing.
  • Don’t dare to talk about Gigi that way –
  • Relax old man, everyone knows what goes on with you and her, but she is a Babcock, and those are dangerous, believe me I know –
  • You know nothing, believe me nothing –
  • What do you mean? –
  • It doesn’t matter, Niles. Now get properly dressed because we have guests for lunch –
  • We do? –
  •

The door bell rang exactly at 2, C.C was nervous. Nath, followed by Tim, went to open the door.

  • Mrs. Babcock, welcome. –
  • Nath you’re always so charming, if only you weren’t a butler my daughter could be marring you by now – A over 60 woman appeared from the other side of the door.
  • C.C came out from the hall.

  • Mother! What a pleasant surprise! –
  • Yes, dear, yes –
  • Come in, please. Would you like something to drink? –
  • Of course, darling, in what planet are you living in? –
  • Tim, would you bring mother a martini, please –
  • And for you? – Tim asked curious she hasn’t asked for any.
  • Nothing – Tim opened his eyes impressed but said nothing.
  • I assume you’re not making time because lunch isn’t ready? –
  • No, mother. Who do you think I am? –
  • Well enough chatting. Where is your cousin? –
  • She went out shopping –
  • Always trying to avoid me. Why does she think I hate her? –
  • Maybe because that one time you humiliated her in front of all the family, called her a bitch a whore and a self centred women right after Daniel cheated me –
  • Well I had my reasons, he was a good candidate for a husband –
  • Can we not talk about my social status, please mother? –
  • Tim came in with a tray, a martini and a glass with scotch.

  • Though you might need it – he whispered in C.C’s ear as he watched her drank it without hesitation.
  • Lunch is served, ma’am – Niles announced watching in amassment who the guest was.
  • Aren’t you the Sheffield’s butler? –
  • C.C modulated no and moved her head in negation.

  • No, you must have me confused with other witty, handsome, intelligent butler – He said smiling.
  • Gigi has to get much better behaved help – B.B whispered in C.C’s ear as they made their way to the dining room, C.C just nodded in affirmation, gazing with anger in Niles’s eyes.
  • They sat in the table and C.C noticed there were three places set. She looked at Nath and Edgar in wonder but neither of them moved, then she looked to her mother that fake a smile for her. She had probably invited some potential husband to eat; maybe it made it more bearable. The door bell rang and C.C closed her eyes covering her face with her hands.

  • Who did you invited this time, mother? –
  • I didn’t invite anyone, Gigi must have –
  • Yeah right –
  • Don’t talk like this with your mother –
  • Sorry – she said faking the same smiled her mother had.
  • Niles runs to open the door. When he did his eyes wide open.

  • So, I see you were a butler after all, huh, Niles? – He said raising his eyebrow.
  • Mr. Goldwater –
  • Call me Daniel; after all we’ll be like family in no more than a couple of weeks, that if you still work in this house by then. –
  • He made his way to the dining room.

  • B.B, darling what a nice surprise. You’re as good looking as the first day I saw you –
  • Daniel, dear, and you as charming. Come in, come in –
  • C.C eyed Niles with concern; she then looked at Daniel who raised his eyebrow and hugged her.

  • C.C, darling, so long since we last saw each other –
  • Yeah, so long – she said sarcastically
  • Daniel sat trying to make small talk with B.B, who made like she listened carefully, smiled and then nodded. C.C was bored the whole dinner.

  • So, C.C, what do you think? – Danny asked knowing she wasn’t paying any attention at all.
  • Huh? – She said getting out of trance.
  • You know, about what we’ve been talking, what do you think? –
  • I totally agree with mother –
  • See, I told you she had some common sense, not like you, Daniel, dear – C.C sighed and looked at Daniel smiling, he just rolled his eyes and kept listening to the senseless words B.B was saying.
  • C.C drank wine, chewing her food. She wondered why, most of the time she did. Why? This time it seemed like fate had played a game with her, she was defenseless against it. She needed to know why, and now it wasn’t just a matter of pride, it was a mater of hate, love, business and a noise butler that kept looking at her with an air of superiority.

Just if Daniel wasn’t the most important baker for her and Maxwell’s new project she could kick him out of her life for ever, but she couldn’t, she couldn’t conquer fate.

  • Why? - She said as Daniel read the newspaper sat in Gigi’s living room.
  • Why what, sweetheart? –
  • You know what, and don’t call me sweetheart –
  • I don’t know what are you talking about, C.C –
  • Why did you come? –
  • Your mother invited me – he said smiling charmingly and going back to the paper.
  • Knew it! –
  • What? That your mother invited me? –
  • No, that you asked my mother to come –
  • How did you…? I mean… I did not –
  • Yeah right –
  • Niles came in with a silver tray and two drinks.

  • I admit it. I asked her –
  • Why? –
  • Can you stop asking that? –
  • No - she said laughing and enjoying the feeling she was causing in Daniel.
  • He stood up, for Niles’ surprise and Babcock’s too.

  • I would say I had had it, but you need me as much as I need you and you know it. And I’m not just talking about business…you know. Stop being so stubborn C.C. You are an intelligent woman, I’m sure you’ll make the right choice. - He said leaving her looking amazed at the space.
  • Schmuck – she heard herself saying.
  • Too much time with Miss Fine? –
  • Believe me that’s the last thing in my mind now –
  • Then it shouldn’t be that far –
  • Ha-ha – She laughed – Can you please tell Edgar, Angelo and Nath to come here with me –
  • I’m not your servant… - he shut himself up and went to the kitchen slowly thinking in what just had happen.
  • Niles walked over the kitchen still thinking. So many things had happen in the last two weeks. He sighed grinning. Then Nath crossed his way… He looked at him and let him passed, he did the same with Angelo and Edgar. He was no one to follow her orders, nor in the Sheffield’s home nor there.

He reached for the back yard where he found B.B reading some papers. He thought maybe he could found out something interesting about Miss Babcock.

He cleaned his throat, making her look back.

  • What do you want? – She said rudely.
  • "Just as her daughter" he thought.

  • I thought, maybe, you’ll need something –
  • No I don’t, now go, I’m working –
  • Working?... I mean, working. If you don’t mind me asking. What are you working in, ma’am? –
  • Yes I mind, but I’m trying to sue someone –
  • Who? –
  • You are a really noisy butler, had someone told you that? –
  • If I had a penny for every person that told me that… – he mumbles, smiling at her.
  • I think Gigi should consider firing you –
  • Maybe – He said as he left without any porpoise accomplish.
  • I’m suing my sister –
  • Huh? – Niles turned around – What? Why? –
  • You asked who I was suing I answered: my sister –
  • Why? –
  • Some agreement we made years ago, and that she didn’t followed, but I don’t know why I am telling you these things, after all you are just a butler – she said without taking her eyes of the papers.
  • I’m a human too –
  • Yes, yes, that too. C.C used to say that about our help, until I had to take some important changes in her life –
  • Which were…? –
  • Boarding school, of course, she had to learn that classes don’t mix. Just as Kiky has to learn, but my sister is too soft with her. Good thing we made this agreement. –
  • Just then something pop in Niles head.

  • If you excuse me I just realize something - He said as he left running trying to find C.C.
  •

  • We have to stop her, C.C – he heard Angelo saying from the living room. He hated not to know what was happening there. He hated to think C.C was involved in something and for the first time he didn’t know what it was.
  • I know, but with Niles here it’ll be a problem –
  • He doesn’t have to be, sweetheart – Edgar said smoking a cigar.
  • Niles looked inside and saw them all sat in a circle. The guys were all with their jackets resting in the chairs and paying attention to C.C.

  • The only thing you have to do is distract him –
  • What about Gigi? – She asked.
  • She’ll be fine – Nath said – she knows already, and accept to be a part of it –
  • You told her? – She screamed.
  • We can trust her –
  • You know we can’t! –
  • She’ll keep it down –
  • If she says one word to anyone I swear to God I’ll kill you Nath, and you know I mean it! – Niles smiled recognizing the C.C he knew.
  • Why don’t we tell Niles then? – Angelo asked.
  • C.C thought for a while.

  • It might be a risk –
  • If we want to spoil your mother’s plan is a risk we have to take- Edgar added.
  • Maybe, but I know him and he can’t keep a secret even if his life depended in it –
  • If we tell him his life will –
  • I know – C.C whispered.
  • They all looked at her in amazement.

  • That’s why you don’t want to tell him! –
  • That’s such bull shit! –
  • It makes sense, C.C. I have to admit it – Angelo said.
  • Niles couldn’t take it anymore; he was used to always know what goes on in the Sheffield’s home, in C.C’s life. And now it was too weird. By the way, where the hell was Daniel?

He was still looking at them when he felt a hand in his shoulder. He looked back in surprise. He saw Juliet’s and Helen’s faces. She put her finger in her mouth motioning him to be quiet and then she took his hand and the three of them went to the kitchen. Greg and Tim were there.

  • I thought it was your day off – Niles said to Helen.
  • It was, I just felt like working – she said smiling. Niles hadn’t noticed she hadn’t let go his hand.
  • Can someone explain me what’s going on? – He said looking at everyone.
  • Yes we can, sir – Tim said as he looked at their join hands.
  • Niles noticed this and slowly let go Helen’s hand.

  • Look Niles, you must know how the Babcock family is… -
  • Yes I think I do –
  • Mr. Babcock and Mrs. Babcock got divorced right after Miss Babcock was born – Greg started noticing that Niles smiled at some memory – That’s how it’s been for most of the Babcock’s. Except for Mr. Noel and Miss D.D. They hardly had had any kind of love from their parents. As you must probably know Miss Babcock was raised by her nanny Bobo, and then when she was old enough she was sent to boarding school. –
  • By that time the Babcocks had a much larger household. Completes families worked for them – Helen said smiling at Niles who just listened carefully – Including Edgar’s, Nath’s, Angelo’s, Greg’s and Ben’s families.-
  • Who’s Ben? –
  • Ben was Ms Babcock’s best friend –
  • She had a friend? – Niles said surprised.
  • We were practically raised in this family. We grew up in Miss Babcock’s mansion, we watched her say her first words, take her first steps and at her debutants party, when she turned 15 –
  • That’s why she comes here every year for a month to stay… And that’s why everyone is so sweet to her – Niles said. He looked as Helen’s smile faded.
  • Probably – Greg smiled kissing Juliet’s cheek – We were real friends back then and it didn’t matter that we were the help and she was one of the mistresses of the house, we had to play behind Mrs. Babcock’s back, though -
  • Tim lighted a cigar.

  • Then one day her mother caught us playing together and blamed everything on me and the guys… Miss Babcock defended us, and as a result she was sent to boarding school –
  • I get it now - Niles said thinking.
  • She was able to come back once a month to see her family, but every time she came she was colder and changed. And every time more stubborn like her mother. –
  • But I don’t get that any of this has to do with… well that –
  • I’ll get to that Niles have patience. When she turned 16, differently from her sister, she already knew what she wanted to do in life, where she wanted to work and how much money she wanted to have. Noel and C.C were always companions and did their first investment together when C.C turned 15 and won hundreds of dollars, things Mr. Babcock was very proud of. But the problem was never that. –
  • My family arrived to that house when I was around 13 years old and Miss Babcock was 16, and here is where the story starts to make sense – Helen started telling her part of the story – It was one of those weekends where C.C came home from boarding school, I was cleaning the room next door when I heard some noises come from her room. I went to her door to see what the matter was. I opened it a little and there she was talking with Ben, apparently about something serious when suddenly he came closer to her and kissed her… -
  • Niles’ eyes opened, his mind started working thousands time faster and his heart pounded like a mouse. He wanted to hear the rest of the story but was afraid too of what he was going to find out, he had heard at least the half of the story and still nothing made much sense.

  • AND? –
  • Well they kissed, and I shut the door, not pretending to see what came next –
  • But Niles’ imagination did go farther and a thorn was mysteriously stuck in his heart.

  • Get your mind of the gutter because that didn’t happened, Niles – Greg said smiling.
  • How do you know? – He said a little pissed off.
  • Ben always told me everything that happened to him – Greg thought he could continue the story – Then from nowhere Mrs. Babcock appeared. You can imagine what happened next. They fired all of us. That’s when Mr. Beauvais hired us. –
  • I don’t get what all this thing has to do with Miss Babcock and everything –
  • Well the thing is… -
  • The door opened, C.C was there standing. She looked at all of them and then at Niles.

  • Can you come here please? –
  • Helen looked at her and then looked at the floor closing her eyes. Niles kissed her cheek and went out. Everyone there was amazed by that gestured; even Tim was mouth wide open. C.C’s eyes opened wider and her blue stare never understood what was happening. But she followed Niles quietly.

  • What the hell was that! –
  • What? –
  • You know! –
  • Helen? –
  • Yes! –
  • My personal life does not require of you’re help, Babcock –
  • Personal life? Whatever – she said pissed off.
  • Angelo came near C.C and asked her quietly where Daniel was.

  • I don’t have any idea –
  • I’ll better watch –
  • Yes, you better, butler –
  • Edgar looked at Niles and then at C.C. Niles looked at him not trusting him a second and then he just let him spoke.

  • There is something we need to tell you, Niles –
  • What is it? – He asked urgently.
  • C.C darling, do you know where Daniel is? –B.B’s voice came from the hall.
  • C.C looked at them, closed her eyes and let a sigh out of her lips.

  • No mother –
  • You should, after all he is going to be your husband –
  • Is not! –
  • Listen to me carefully Chastity Claire… - Niles tried not to laugh but it was inevitable, he covered his mouth with his hands and trying to hide from B.B’s stare he made like everything was okay, but he wasn’t going to forget that, oh god he wasn’t – You are going to get married whether you like it or not –
  • Mother, you listen to me. You made me spend my whole life in boarding school, made my name a law over my life until I was over 20, and everything because Ben… -
  • You know that’s not a business to discuss here –
  • I discuss my freaking life wherever I freaking want! –
  • C.C… -
  • Then you fired my boyfriend –
  • He was a butler! –
  • So what! –
  • Niles though he was never going to hear C.C say that words again.

  • And now you want to do the same with Kiky –
  • She has to learn that classes don’t mix –
  • Get out, mother, before I do something we are all going to regret! –
  • I won’t forget this C.C – She said taking her coat and leaving with a slam on the door.
  • The door opened again and Gigi came in.

  • What was that all about? –
  • Nothing, cousin, nothing –
  •

Niles woke up and thought everything could be a dream, that he had never leave the Sheffield’s home, that he had never found Babcock there, that everything was just a bad dream.

He opened his eyes and realized it wasn’t a dream. The third week was almost done and he could barely understand what was going on in that house. Everything used to be so simple.

The phone rung and he answered.

  • Beauvais residence –
  • Niles? –
  • Mr. Sheffield? –
  • Yes, I just call to check everything is doing fine. I heard about the incident with C.C. Are you really working for her? She is still alive is she? –
  • Yes she is, sir. I wouldn’t even dream of touching her– he said remembering his last dream.
  • Good, do you know if she still has that backer named Daniel Goldwater…? I think –
  • Yes sir, he is her boyfriend – he growls.
  • Oh – he said remembering he Colin incident – is everything okay, old man? –
  • Yes sir, don’t worry. Tell Miss Fine and the kids hello from me –
  • I will, take care old man –
  • Ditto, sir –
  • And he head off for his shower.

He heard a knock in his door as he was putting his tie on.

  • Yes? –
  • Niles? –
  • Helen, come in –
  • The door opened and he saw her skinny body came in his room.

  • Yes? –
  • Look Niles, I know strange things have been happening lately –
  • Mhm -
  • I was wondering, do you have any feelings, at all, for Miss Babcock? –
  • Niles raised an eyebrow.

  • Why? –
  • I just want to know –
  • Yes, of course I have feelings for her –
  • Helen’s smiled started to disappear.

  • Hate, loath, despise, that kind of feelings –
  • Oh – she smiled again.
  • Damn! – He said as he did, for first time in his life wrong the tie knot. Maybe he was a little nervous.
  • Let me – She came near him, almost touching him and sensuously did his tie.
  • The door opens in a rush.

  • Niles I… - C.C stood there amazed – I guess this is a bad time… I’ll come back later –
  • Wait! – But the door was already closed
  • I’m sorry -
  • It’s not your fault – he said as he run behind Babcock leaving Helen alone.
  • He runs behind her. She arrived to the office. She came in and Niles followed.

  • What the bloody hell was that about…? – He said until he noticed B.B, Daniel, Gigi, B.B’s sister, Kiky, Tim and a guy he didn’t recognize in the room.
  • C.C stopped there shocked.

  • Ben – she whispered as a tall blond guy came closer to her.
  • C.C –
  • Niles felt out of place.

  • Why are you here? –
  • I came to settle things out –
  • What sort of things? –
  • C.C listen … -
  • I don’t want to listen, okay? First you all tell me what is this about –
  • C.C, darling, we are here to settle something we should have settled years ago – Daniel said taking her hand.
  • Let go of me – she said taking her hand from his – I’ll listen –
  • Kiky stood by C.C’s side.

  • I know we haven’t been the best cousins but this one time I thank you for being in my side –
  • Just remember it in case I need some help from you –
  • I will – Kiky smiled.
  • Niles didn’t know what he was doing there so he intend going out, but Daniel’s hand stopped him.

  • You are not going anywhere, you know too much –
  • I don’t have a clue on any of this bloody business –
  • But your lover does, doesn’t she? -
  • Helen came in with a sigh, so did Angelo, Edgar, Greg and Nath and soon the room seemed small.

  • She is not my lov… - He didn’t finish because Angelo eyed him with an It’s-useless face.
  • Well if you don’t mind I would like to get this started – B.B began.
  • I don’t think this is necessary, sister –
  • Read the agreement, it has your signature on it so now you’re lost – B.B continued, and Niles couldn’t believe how Babcock’s had no respect, at all for family.
  • C.C took the agreement in her hands and read it. She had read a lot of contracts in her life, but nothing like this one, there was no way of getting out of it, there was no way of escaping fate. She sigh eying Ben.

  • Let’s start from the beginning, shall we? – She said sitting – Please take a sit –
  • Everyone did.

  • There are far too many butlers in this room – B.B said.
  • Just the ones that are necessary miss – Greg answered.
  • But Niles didn’t know what the hell he was doing there. Ben stood up and came close to C.C. He looked deep in her eyes and smile remembering better times. Daniel didn’t stand this.

  • Get of my fiancée - he rudely said.
  • I haven’t even touch her, sir –
  • I’m not yours, Daniel –
  • Well enough of chit chat; I believe everyone is curious to know what is going on. – Everybody nodded and Niles raised an eyebrow as Helen sat next to him taking his hand on hers, C.C looked at him and took Ben’s hand as he raised an eyebrow as well. B.B took the document out and read it to everyone.
  • "September, 4th, 1972" C.C looked serious and so did everyone else. "By the power that comes over me, B.B Babcock, I make this agreement with the family Goldwater. If by the day 28 of September of 1999 my daughter C.C Babcock is single, and with no commitments at all, will marry their first-born child, Daniel Charles Goldwater. In case this marriage doesn’t take place, for any other reason C.C will maintain her status of single till the day she dies, and won’t be able to produce an heir for any other family, my daughter D.D Babcock runs the same luck. She will have to marry the bachelor John Stuart a month after her sister’s wedding."

  • How could you sign something like that? – Niles whispered in Babcock’s ear.
  • I just wanted to please my mother, I was sure that by this time I was going to be married and my mother would not be able to do anything about it – she whispered back.
  • But you’re pathetic enough… -
  • You are older than me and I don’t see a ring in that finger –
  • "This agreement concerns too, my sister E.E. She agreed with me that her daughters to be born will run the same luck as C.C and D.D if they are in age for being married and single by this same date. The deal is closed with the families Dowell and Drake, from Ireland and their newly born children Simon and Patrick. The weeding of E.E’s daughter/s will be a month after D.D’s one, if this one proceeds."

"This agreement closed over notary and absolutely impossible to forget and/or get out of…"

And it kept going on and on over how it was impossible to ignore. Niles now understood everything. Miss Babcock and Daniel had tried things out before this day came and they hadn’t work out and now she was forced to marry him. His blood was boiling as he pressed hard Helen’s hand.

  • How could you do this to me, mother! – Kiky screamed as she run over Tim’s arms.
  • Listen to me Kiky, darling, I tried my best to get out of it, even my lawyer tried but is impossible. It took me more than a couple of headaches but at least I finally understood how much Timothy means to you, and, god forbids, he will stop being a butler. –
  • I’m really sorry ma’am, but I pretend to go to the Butler’s school in London… -
  • Drear god… -
  • C.C closed her eyes watching so much misery.

  • Mother, listen to me, I am defeated and for first time in my life I’m giving up. Okay I will remarry Daniel, but please, I beg you don’t make Kiky go through the same thing you made me go when I was her age. –
  • Remarry?! – Niles yelled.
  • Everyone looked at him and he saw how Greg nodded. Then that was the reason why they were so curious to know what had go on that night at the dance, and why C.C was acting so strange… but in seconds his mind got lost in their kiss again and his feet started shaking.

  • Yes, Niles, REmarry. –
  • She haven’t told you, butler boy? – Daniel asked as Niles looked at him with all the hate you can give in a glare - We were married just in her 21st birthday, we would have lived happily ever after if she hadn’t ask for the divorce.-
  • I was forced to marry you… son of a…- C.C yelled – and we divorced right after I started working for Maxwell –
  • C’mon darling C.C – B.B said – it was just to get that lousy butler Benjamin of your head–
  • I’m here madam, just in case you haven’t noticed – he said almost loosing all respect for her.
  • Whatever –
  • That’s why you fired Edgar, Angelo, Nath and Greg then? – C.C started putting the pieces in place- you had no right to leave their families in the street just because I had a relationship with Ben! –
  • Yes I did, besides your cousin hired them –
  • I’m sorry I interrupt, Miss Babcock but I have to agree with your mother, classes don’t mix is just an ethic form. And if I were you Gregory I would take hands in all this mess –
  • But you are not me, Nath, I am deeply sorry you feel Tim is your responsibility but he is not, he is my son and I have the right to think and choose what’s better for him and I think this is –
  • Thanks dad – Tim whispered holding Kiky stronger as if someone could rip her of his embrace.
  • Can I talk? – Gigi smiled charmingly – I know you hate me for breaking your daughter’s marriage B.B, sweetie, but this time cousin I agree with your mother. Classes don’t mix, besides you know nothing about Ben anymore, and Helen and Niles are a couple – C.C looked at Niles in surprise and Niles tried to tell her it was a lie but Helen shushed him with a deep kiss – See? You don’t have other chance. It’s marry Daniel or marry Daniel.–
  • Edgar was furious.

  • You set us up, Nath! You made like you wanted to break this up just because Miss Beauvais told you too. You are nut’s you knew? She doesn’t love you, never will! You are just her freaking sex toy! – Nath breath was caught in his throat.
  • She will…- he whispered.
  • Oh she won’t and you know it! You are just saying this lousy speech because you think she will like you better, but listen to you dood you are trying to do the opposite of what you say! – Angelo screamed at him furious.
  • Gigi was taken aback by this comment and looked at Nath that looked at her with pleading eyes.

  • I’m sorry Nath, but we… we don’t work together, we are not meant for each other. You are my butler and I am your boss and that’s the way It’ll always be –
  • Nath closes his eyes and got out of the room.

  • Maybe you were too harsh on him – Greg added.
  • Niles was looking at C.C that was quiet staring at her hands, it was the first time since he had meet C.C Babcock that she looked defeated. He tried to tell her, he wanted to tell her but he needed to know what course things were heading.

  • Well there is nothing else to talk about, the agreement is closed. C.C you will get married next week and you Kiky in a month starting from now. D.D just has luck that she is married. –
  • Okay – C.C nodded.
  • Ben, Niles and Kiky looked at her in amaze. Angelo, Edgar and Greg looked at each other with worry.

  • What?! – They said in unison.
  • C.C, darling, hear what you are saying – Ben said as he made her look at his eyes taking her chin with his thumb – you are not the C.C I fall in love with, the one that never gave up, the one that always had a comment to say or something to reply, the one that fooled Noel more that once for him to give you him money – C.C smiled at this memory. –
  • C.C you can’t do this to me, we have to get this finished for once and for all – Kiky cried. – I thought you were going to be strong! –
  • She is – Niles said – she is strong enough to go through this and more, she is just beaten, she can’t keep fighting. I think her time has come. I knew Babcock; I knew this day was going to arrive. The day where no more strength is left in your heart… You are a looser Babcock, even I could handle all this… - He smiled as he saw how his reversed psychology worked. It always did.
  • You are sooooo wrong lousy excuse for a butler!!! I can keep fighting. I wont, for any reason GIVE UP! I have never –
  • Niles chuckled. And Angelo smiled as he realised how much he knew C.C.

  • I am so sorry darling, but there is nothing you can do – B.B smiled.
  • Oh, mother there is! – She nodded to Angelo.
  • I’ll be right back Ms –
  • The moments passed slowly and Ben took that time to explain C.C why he had gone.

  • After your mother fired me I seek for a job all over USA, but she had destroyed my name telling everyone I had tried to rape you… -
  • I heard that on the news – C.C answer. – But at that time I was too preoccupied trying to please her and daddy that trying to reach you was just not in my list of to does.
  • I can understand, C.C –
  • I know – he said kissing her hand. Niles looked at them and saw how in love they were, why to bother in telling her the truth about him and Helen? It was useless. He wondered, though, why? Why Helen was doing what she was doing? He looked at her and saw such and angelical creature that in his minds the possibility of her doing something like that just didn’t fit. Maybe she just had a crush on him and was trying to take C.C away…
  • Angelo rushed in the room with a wide smile.

  • I am sorry ma’am, but you are so done – he told B.B and a smiled appeared in Tim and Kiky’s face turning both for a passionate kiss. Greg smiled.
  • The door flied open and Stuart came in with his attorney.

  • Dad? –
  • Hello Kitten –
  • What are you doing here Stuart? – B.B said with fear on her face for first time.
  • I came to end this nonsense –
  • This is not such thing! –
  • Oh it is, darling –
  • You won’t be able to do a thing! You hear me! –
  • Of course I will, I have been reading a rereading this document for over two months now and I finally found a failure. You won’t be able to do a thing to my daughter and your niece. What you don’t know is that C.C and Gigi’s butlers have been planning this over a month now… we had it all settle, you liked out little act we set you up? C.C giving up! What a hilarious idea – he said laughing.
  • You haven’t told me yet what my failure was… You just bark Stuart but never bite –
  • I will bite this time witch - he said taking the agreement of her hands and putting his glasses on for reading a part. – Here it says ", I make this agreement with the family Goldwater. If by the day 28 of September of 1999 my daughter C.C Babcock is single, and with no commitments at all, will marry their first-born child… blahblahblah…" –
  • So –
  • I see you are more dense than I thought… listen to this: if my daughter C.C IS SINGLE, AND WITH NO COMITMENT AT ALL, will marry this Daniel fellow. But what if she is with commitment, you never specified, witch, if she has a boyfriend everything is ruined and what concerns Kiky you just said that she ran the same luck that C.C, and then you must assume that is the EXTACT same luck. –
  • Kiky’s smile grew wider.

  • But I have a boyfriend… that means – She ran across the room and hugged Stuart - I love you so much Uncle Stuart – then she hugged C.C without words she just expressed what she felt.
  • But C.C is not with commitment right now –
  • Oh yes she is – Ben said. C.C looked at him and just smiled.
  • Niles was happy this all business was finally coming to an end. B.B was stunned, and then Stuart’s attorney grabbed her by her hand and guides her to break the deal. Gigi was pissed off just as B.B was and looking how joyfully everyone was she look her word.

  • Angelo, Edgar, Greg, Tim you are all fired! – she said as she stormed out of the room – and Juliet is too –
  • Tim’s eyes grew wider.

  • Don’t worry Tim, I will hire you all – E.E said as her daughter hugged her for being such a kind mother.
  • Thank you so much, daddy – C.C said hugging him as this whole nightmare ended.
  • Anytime milady, anytime –
  •

    C.C sighed with relief.

  • You get yourself out of it as you always do – Daniel said with some sorrow in his eyes– I really wanted you to be my wife – he kissed her hand and stormed out of there.
  • Thanks for everything Miss Babcock, Mr Babcock – Tim said lighting a cigarette and shaking Stuart’s hand as he and Kiky got out of the room, E.E joining them out. Greg, Angelo and Edgar were smiling happily.
  • Everything worked as planned – Angelo said kissing C.C good bye in the cheek.
  • It did –
  • Good bye sweetheart – Edgar said closing the door behind Greg that waved them.
  • I have too to go kitten. I’ll see you around. And if you have any kind of problems with that thing you call mother just phone me –
  • I will, father, I will –
  • Soon it was only C.C, Ben, Helen and Niles oddly standing inside the office. Niles gave one last look at C.C and then stormed out closing his eyes with anger. Helen followed him.

Once out he turned around and grabbed her by her shoulders.

  • Why? – He screamed at her – why did you do it?-
  • Because Miss Beauvais threaten me with firing me and she paid me really well –
  • That’s not reason enough and you know it! –
  • She told me the first day who you were and to take care of you, to woo you… I just didn’t have the nerve to do it! But I had too, I don’t intend to loose a job as good as his one! –
  • Niles looked skyward thinking that three weeks ago he prayed to god to take C.C out of his life and now he prayed him to get her into it.

  • Niles I didn’t knew any of this; you said you haven’t feelings for her! You said it this morning! You couldn’t have change your mind so easily –
  • I didn’t – he sigh – I feel hate and loath and despise… as well as admiration and care and… -
  • Love? –
  • Yeah that too – he shyly said.
  • I’m sorry, apparently Miss Beauvais knew about it… I didn’t –
  • Don’t be sorry –
  • Helen left him alone in his loneliness. He had to go and see what was going on with C.C for last time.

    He opened the door slowly.

Ben was on his knee looking at C.C.

  • I missed you so deeply – he said smiling at her.
  • Me too –
  • Run away with me –
  • What? –
  • Run away with me! –
  • I can’t Ben; I have a job, and friends…-
  • You’ll get another job, and make new friends C.C, please, if you missed me as much as you say, if you still love as much as you did then run away with me –
  • I…I can’t –
  • I promise you heaven; I could give you the stars, the ocean and every flower in earth. That’s how much I love you. I could give you the moon. I could give you the sun that is as perfect as your hair. I could give you everything you wanted… Come with me, I’ll promise you we will be happy because no one on earth can love you as much as I do… -
  • Wrong, Niles though as his eyes closed in pain.

  • I know you could give me all that, Ben… and much more I just… -
  • There is someone else? – He asked fearing.
  • She just nodded looking into his green forest eyes. Niles’ heart pounded miles per hour.

  • You need to be with someone until the end of this month, I’ll do it, don’t worry. Then I’ll get lost and you’ll never see me again Babcock –
  • Thank you Ben –
  • He waved her and Niles walked away as he came closer to the door. Ben opened it and left with a overwhelm face. This was Niles’ chance. He waited until Ben was lost in the hall and came closer to the office door that was when he heard it, sobs, sobs that came form her heart and straight to her eyes. He opened the door and she didn’t notice him there. It was the first time he saw a tier in her eyes… He silently came closer to where she was sitting and with his right hand he caressed her face. She looked up amazed.

He looked at her and with his and took the tears away. He couldn’t stand that she cried it was heart breaking. She opened her mouth to say something but he shushed her with his finger. She didn’t understand anything. Wasn’t he supposed to be with Helen? He smiled guessing her though.

  • Your cousin paid her for wooing me and making like we were together –
  • What? That damn witch… - But she stooped because the look in his eyes was changing. And then she realized they were just inches apart from each other and she could breathe his scent and look directly into his soul.
  • I know you think classes shouldn’t mix but… -
  • Haven’t you learn nothing from today’s argument – she said glaring at him. He smiled without taking his hand of her face ever. She looked so beautiful now.
  • She caressed his hand with her own and took his face with her other hand. The look in his eyes couldn’t fool her this time, this time there was no one to interrupt them, there was no place they should reach. She closed her eyes submitting to fate that had change so much in just matter of hours. Everything was perfect again, like it was when she was young.

Everything was peaceful and with his right hand holding her face and his left hand holding her back nothing could be wrong again anymore. Then from nowhere her nightmare came floating to her mind. A chill went up her spine; she didn’t want that to happened, not now that for first time everything could be perfect as if it had been perfect all along.

Niles watched her closing her eyes and admired the image of her like that. The bitch of Broadway surrounded by him, just a butler. But deep down he knew he was the only one worth for her, the only one that could handle her fierce and fire. Not Ben that had her when she was just a teen, not Daniel that had her the wrong way, not Mr. Sheffield that would never had her… But Him. Niles, the butler was worth of having her.

When he was young he had promised himself that nothing could take her away from him, and for many years nothing did but particular and rarely boyfriends that appeared from while to while. He was a coward back then, fearing rejection. But now with her face in his hand it was haven.

He came closer, closing his eyes and their lips met. After weeks from that brief encounter, and years from that passionate one. The perfect kiss was given then; all the problems in the world wouldn’t be much for them to not be happy. He brought her closer, crashing her body with his and enjoying every moment of that heavenly kiss.

It was just as good as all the others, she though, and she admitted herself that everything she wanted could be found in him… Him and no one else. He was her dream and soon that nightmare about rejection and death was forgotten because he demanded more from her. He demanded everything she could give.

She didn’t want him to go, she didn’t want to open her eyes and not feel his lips upon hers anymore, or his tongue exploring with hunger her mouth. She wanted this moment to last forever. And so did him.

He took her face in his hands and slowly parted the kiss.

  • Don’t go – se begged.
  • I am not going anywhere, witch – He said taking her in his arms and kissing her again as they made their way to her room – He could promise you all those beautiful things, I just have one thing to give you kiddo, my love -
  • That’s all I need and want – She said kissing him - Niles?? –
  • Yes? –
  • What did you need the money for? –
  • What money? –
  • Ha ha what money? The money –
  • Oh… to buy you an engagement ring – he smiled at the surprise in her eyes and he kissed her deeply once more to keep her quiet.
  •

  • Oy – Fran said as Max searched for the keys for the mansion.
  • Why the hell Niles don’t answer the door –
  • You don’t think Miss Babcock killed him don’t you? – B asked with worry.
  • It could be a possibility – Maggie said.
  • Don’t say that things, B! –
  • Here! – Maxwell opened the door.
  • Grace went running up stairs.

  • Told ya to went to the bathroom in the plane, sweetie –
  • I know Fran! – She said yelling from the second floor hall.
  • Brighton chuckled and followed his sister as Maggie took the cordless dialling for Mike. Max took Fran in his arms.

  • Finally home – he whispered in her ear.
  • I know – she said kissing him softly on his lips.
  • I have to check something in the office darling; I’ll be with you in one second… Wait me up – he said with a naughty look.
  • Don’t you get enough, after joining the High mile club… two times –
  • Nope – he kissed her sweetly.
  • Good – she said as she headed upstairs.
  • Maxwell left his coat in the closet and looked around for any sings of Niles. Nowhere! He walked to the office and opened the door quietly.

  • Niles, C.C!!!!!!!!! – He said as his British voice got lost in the halls of the mansion and million questions encircled his mind. Fate? Maybe.
