This is a continuation of the story," Having Mr. Sheffield's Baby". I know this is something that would never happened of in Max and Fran's marriage, but I just felt like taking a different spin on things. I hope you like reading it.

More Children

Fran couldn’t believe she might be having another baby. She wasn’t even married to Max for two years, and they already had three children; David barely two, the twins nine months old; how would she handle it. That night when Fran went to bed she had a hard time falling asleep. Later she dreamt that she is having a baby and she is wearing an old-fashioned maternity dress covering her huge stomach. Max tells her "we already have six children, isn’t that enough?" I don’t want another baby." Fran leaves the house with the kids. She goes to her mother, she sees her with the three kids, and very pregnant with another one. Her mother asks her why she is here; Fran tells her Max didn’t want another child so he told her to leave. Her mother says, she doesn’t want her here either. Then Fran goes to stay with Val in her small apartment. There is hardly room enough for everyone. She has to support herself so she ends up working in a ninety-nine cents store, but she is so pregnant she can barely reach the register. Then one day she is in labor. Val‘s boyfriend takes her to the hospital, but they tell Fran that she has no insurance so they can’t keep her. They go back to the Val’s apartment to call an ambulance. By the time they came Fran was already having the baby. She felt so alone and was in so much pain that she screamed, "Why did you tell me to leave, I love you so much, it’s your baby too. Max I need you, please help me, please." Of course this woke Max up; then Fran wakes up screaming. He strokes her hair, asks her what is wrong, she said that she had a bad dream; she just wants him to hold her. He felt that Fran was still shaking; he told her she could tell him what was bothering her that was marriage was about. Right now Fran felt too afraid. She still wasn’t sure she is pregnant. She was worried about how Max would handle the situation. She knew that he loved her, why would he have married her when he found out that she was miserable after telling her to leave when she was having his baby.

After that dream Fran was out of sorts, she decided to take a pregnancy test, of course it was positive. Even though Fran suspected it, she was still shocked. Immediately she made an appointment with Dr. Reynolds. The doctor confirmed to Fran that she is having another baby. Fran asked her if it was she was having twins again, Dr Reynolds said that she didn’t think so, but she would know better by the next appointment. Fran is nervous so she doesn’t want to tell Max yet. He notices that something is troubling his wife. Fran finally has another doctor appointment - she tells her that she is having just one baby. Fran is definitely relieved.

Now Fran decides that she is going to tell Max about the baby. One night Max was reading in bed, she told him she they need to talk to him. Fran asks that if he remembered that terrible dream she had a few weeks ago. He said yes. She told him she dreamt that she was having another baby, it was true. She went to the doctor who confirmed it. Fran said she wasn’t too happy about it. They already had three small children. She hoped he wasn’t angry. Max said he is surprised by this. He didn’t think he could have a baby so quickly after having pneumonia. Fran said, well he is. Max said to Fran that she told him she wanted another little girl, maybe they would have one now. Fran said she wanted to have that little girl but not so soon. Max said that maybe this would bring them closer together after their marriage was in trouble when Fran spent too much time taking care of the kids and Max spent a lot of time with C.C. Max kissed Fran telling not to worry, everything would be alright. Fran thought, sure, but what would he think when she when her stomach was bulging out, then the lack of sleep when the baby came.

Another couple of weeks pass and Fran notices that she is putting on weight; her clothes are getting tight, she knows that she has to tell the kids. She decides to have a Sunday brunch. She wanted to tell everyone at once, no use having to do it more than that. After the meal is over, Fran said she had this brunch because she wanted to tell everyone that she is having another baby. The kids seem upset by it, Niles seems shocked, and C.C. says, OOO! Isn’t that great. After that the kids are ready to leave but before they do, Maggie says, "How can I bring home any boyfriends if you are always pregnant!" Then Brighton says – "The family is getting to be too big, where do we fit in, it better be a boy". Grace walks out, mumbling -, "Great another baby to take care of". All of a sudden Fran looks like she is going to cry. Then C.C. says to Niles that she needs a drink, she needs to look for some liquor. They go into the kitchen - C.C. says, she really doesn’t need a drink, but Maxwell and Fran need to be alone.

About a month later Fran starts wearing her maternity clothes again, she is definitely not thrilled about it this time. She misses wearing all the new clothes she recently bought. One morning when she comes down for breakfast, Niles is looking at her, she tells him, "well I told you already". Then she tells him that she has to arrange a party for the twins first birthday, and David’s second, then patting her swelling stomach, saying next year there will be another one to make a party for. Fran says she decided to get a party planner since making all the arrangements is too much for her with taking care of her three kids plus the new baby coming. Niles says no problem, less work for him.

Before they have the party it is Max and Fran’s anniversary. She can’t believe she is pregnant with their fourth child but it is her only their second anniversary. This time they are able to celebrate. Fran buys a fancy pants outfit because she wants to look nice for Max. Before they leave for dinner Max says she looks beautiful, Fran doesn’t know how. They enjoy a romantic dinner, later they go to listen to cabaret music. When they get home Fran is exhausted, she goes to sleep right away.

After a lot of preparation they have the birthday party, it is definitely a success. Everyone has a really good time. But afterwards Fran’s day goes downhill. Her mother tells her "you’re having another baby already – don’t come running to me when you are on the streets," Fran was extremely upset, but didn’t say anything. She left the room, telling her mother "just leave me alone, and play with your grandchildren". The next few days Fran was eating almost non-stop. Max and the kids told her to cut back on the food; it wasn’t good for her to worry so much.

Another couple of months passed quickly; the baby is due in a few weeks. Fran can’t wait till she has it; hoping this would be her last child. One day she is in the kitchen with the twins, C.C. comes in for a break. She sees Fran then says to her "goodness look at you, you have three children and another one coming, soon I guess the way you look, hopefully your husband won’t tell you to leave". Fran said, you too, ma said the same thing. C.C. said Max didn’t seem very happy about things when he was with her in California. She thought he was going to stay with her. Fran say "well he came back and I’m having another baby, so who’s right?"

February comes, it is Valentine’s Day, and the baby is due any day. Max tells Niles to make a romantic dinner. He takes off from work early so they can have a nice evening. She tries to enjoy it as much as possible, but finds it hard when she is expecting a baby any day. Shortly after dinner Fran isn’t feeling that well so she goes to bed. Max goes to his office for awhile then joins Fran upstairs. Neither of them got a good night’s sleep because Fran is so uncomfortable. Even though it is Sunday, Max gets up early to take a shower. When he comes out he sees Fran on the chaise lounge. She looks like she is in labor so he asks her if she is having the baby, Fran nods yes. Then he helps her get ready to go the hospital. They wake up Grace to tell her to watch the kids while they for a while. When they get to the hospital Fran is in a lot of pain, she is practically squeezing Max’s hand to pieces. A few hours later Fran has another girl. She is a big girl, weighing almost nine pounds with black hair and she looks just like Fran. They name her Nicole and Max falls in love with her right away.

It takes Fran a few weeks to recover after having the baby. About six weeks later things start to settle down a little bit, and Fran starts to diet and exercise. She also started going out with Max again, she didn’t want to lose her husband this time. They had round-the-clock help to take care of the kids, Fran was definitely grateful for that. It took several months but Fran got into a routine. She bought a lot of new clothes and started going out more. Then Fran decided that she needed an outlet besides the kids so she gets a get a part-time job at a salon doing manicures. She told Max about it. He wasn’t that thrilled but Fran told him it makes her happy, plus she has some extra spending money, how can he say no to that.

Things go well for several months. Then for Christmas Max decides to take a break. They spend their vacation time in the city since it is difficult to go away with four small children. After the break Fran goes back to her usual routine. When she first goes back to work Fran feels more tired than she should, the feeling didn’t go away. Then Fran realizes that she is pregnant again. This time she just calls Dr. Reynolds office to make an appointment.

When Fran comes back home after seeing the doctor she goes straight to bed. Nicole is barely a year old, now she is having another baby. Fran is beside herself, she isn’t even sure if she wants another baby. In the meantime Maggie and Brighton come over for a Friday night dinner, they are wondering where Fran is. Then Max comes home, he sees the kids but he doesn’t see his wife. The kids say they haven’t seen her either. He goes to look for her upstairs- the bedroom door is closed. He opens it and sees Fran lying on the bed. He asks her what is wrong. Fran says she went to the doctor today – after that Max’s mind drifts - hoping that Fran is alright, he can’t bear to lose the love of his life again. Fran keeps talking but he doesn’t hear what she says. When he doesn’t respond she asks if he is listening. She tells him again that they are having another baby; she doesn’t know if she wants it, what should they do? Max says he is relieved, he thought she would tell him that she is sick. But Fran says she doesn’t want to get sick with having another baby. Max strokes her, saying "let’s think about it later, the kids are here for Friday night dinner".

For another few weeks Fran is still on edge, she still upset about this baby. Max realizes that his wife is troubled so he tries his best to be very loving to Fran. Finally she has another doctor appointment and discusses the situation with Dr. Reynolds. After the appointment Fran comes home. She tells Max that she wants to take him out to dinner. When they are finished with the meal she finally tells him they are going another baby. Fran tells Max she thought things through very carefully, this was what she decided. He felt shocked since he almost forgot about the discussion they previously had. Max told Fran that they would need more room in the house. Fran said that she wanted to spend the summer in the Hamptons. She didn’t think she could stand being pregnant in the city during the summer. Max asked her why she wanted to do this. She told him that they even though she is pregnant she wants to try to enjoy the summer, and the Hamptons is the place to be. Max wasn’t thrilled about it, but if Fran wants to go he’ll do it.

A couple of more months passed, Fran was putting on weight again. So far she only told her husband that she is having another baby. She doesn’t want to tell anyone since she isn’t that excited about it. All her clothes are starting to get tight, she knows she’ll have to start wearing her maternity clothes again soon, she is definitely getting depressed.

After five months Fran’s stomach is starting to get big., she knows everyone is going to notice that she is pregnant again, so one day Niles looks at her when she holding Nicole, he sees the bulge in her stomach, then he asks her "another one in the oven, Mrs. Sheffield", she says "Yes, Niles". He notices that she isn’t very excited about it. He guesses she is tired of having a baby every year. Niles can’t believe that Max and Fran are having so many children; he knows that Max loves his wife, but didn’t think that he was interested in such a large family.

A few weeks later Fran gets ready to go to the Hamptons for the summer. Meanwhile they are also making plans to do some work on the house. By the time they are ready to leave Fran is exhausted and she begrudgingly had to give up her part-time job. Fran told them she hoped to be back after she had the baby. Also Fran’s relationship with her mother is definitely not good after she tells her about this baby. Fran thought her mother would love having all these grandchildren, but apparently not. The kids were not thrilled about having another brother or sister either. Maggie said she was thinking about getting engaged, but how she plan anything if her mother is always pregnant, Brighton and Grace weren’t thrilled having about another baby in the family. But when Fran invited them to come out to the Hamptons, the kids said they would definitely be there as much as possible. C.C. was also getting Fran upset again by saying that Max might leave her because she is fat, pregnant, plus there would be another mouth to feed. Fran was definitely having a hard time with this pregnancy; hopefully she could relax a little when she got away.

Finally the family gets out the Hamptons. It takes a few days to get settled, but then they have a glorious few weeks. Max even is enjoying it so much that he takes off more time than he planned. Those few weeks were one of the best in their marriage. Then came the July 4th weekend, they were invited to a party, but Fran had a miserable time. She was almost eight months pregnant, and most of the women there were skinny, hardly anyone talked to her so she felt totally out of place. After that party Fran was depressed for several days. Fran tried to make the best of the rest of the summer. People were always talking to her when she went out with the kids, the nanny and the au pair. On the weekends Maggie sometimes came out, when she went out with the kids people they thought they were hers.

The summer is ending, Fran is miserable, her stomach is huge again. Right now even the designer clothes she wears aren’t cheering her up. Everyone is asking her if she is having twins, Fran says no. Then the time is getting closer for Fran to have the baby, and Max wants her to get back to the city. Fran says she wants to have the baby here; she is so big that just getting back to the city right now it too much for her. Max is upset that his wife is so miserable. He is thinking that they have to do something so they don’t have anymore children after the baby is born.

Then on a Friday Fran goes into labor, Max is on his way back from the city, but Maggie and Brighton are there for the weekend so they end up bringing Fran to the hospital. Fran is in a lot of pain she wishes Max was there because he knows what to do. When they get to the hospital Fran checks in, then goes the room; the nurse comes in and she asks if Brighton is the father. Fran is extremely embarrassed; of course she says no, he is her son from her husband’s first marriage. Both Maggie and Brighton stay with her, it seemed forever till Max arrives. When he gets there it takes awhile for Max to calm Fran down. Later the nurse comes in; she asks if Max is Fran’s husband. Fran says, "of course, why else would he be here?" The nurse is shocked that Max is so handsome and sophisticated. A little while later Fran has another son, who they name Jonathan. He looks just like Max, and weighs almost ten pounds. Both Fran and Max fall in love with him. A few days later they get back to the city with all the children.

It takes several more weeks for everyone to settle down. Finally Jonathan is sleeping at night, so they went out for dinner a couple of times. Fran got her strength back but she was busier than ever. She hardly even had time to exercise. Taking care of the kids even with help was a chore. Of course Fran still had to pay attention to the older kids also. Just trying to solve their problems took a lot of energy. Max noticed that Fran was still exhausted so he suggested that maybe they should go to a hotel for a few nights for a mini-vacation. Fran said she couldn’t be away from the kids especially the baby. But Max said it would only be at nights. He was so insistent about it that Fran gave in. For a few evenings they had romantic dinners, went dancing, and even took in a Broadway show. After that Max noticed that Fran’s mood improved.

About two months later Fran has a check-up with Dr. Reynolds. After the exam is over Dr. Reynolds tells Fran that she has some news for her. She tells Fran that she is six weeks pregnant again. Fran says to Dr. Reynolds, "that can’t be true". The doctor tells her that it is. She says what I am going to do? Her son is just three months old, and she’s six weeks pregnant. Then the doctor tells her, wait – there’s more. It might be twins. Fran drops her face into her hands. How did she ever get into such a mess? She tells the doctor, her husband took her to a hotel for a few nights; they went out every evening and enjoyed themselves, now they have to pay the price.

Fran goes home and tells no one. Max notices that something is troubling his wife, he tries to ask her but she wouldn’t tell him what is wrong. Meanwhile Fran is putting on a lot of weight. Finally Fran has another doctor appointment. At this appointment Fran finds out that she is definitely having twins again. Fran is beside herself, how she is going to take care of another set of twins?

The next few weeks are hard. Fran is getting bigger, Max asks her why she doesn’t seem to be losing any weight; Fran doesn’t answer. Everyone in the family is looking at her. She knows that everyone is wondering if she is pregnant again.

Before Fran knows it she is five months pregnant; she is definitely big already. She decides to get a new maternity outfit, do her hair so she can look nice for Max. One Sunday morning when Max is eating breakfast she comes down and tells him to look at her. He asks her why she is wearing a maternity outfit. Is it April Fools day, no it isn’t April. Is it that holiday that she dresses up for like on Halloween sometimes, no that’s next month. Then he says to her, "goodness Fran you’re pregnant again, we just had a baby". Fran says well, "you wanted to go out have a good time; - I didn’t; now we are paying the price". Then Max walked out and said, "I’m going to my office". He closes the door, wondering how this happened. He wanted to be angry at Fran, she put the blame on him, but this time he knew she was right. His family was expanding more than he wanted it to. He loves his wife, so he has to go along with it; hopefully this wouldn’t have any more children after this.

For the next couple of months Fran has a difficult time. Max and Fran were not that close since she told him that she is having another baby. She still had to tell him they were having twins, which frightened her. Fran is very pregnant again; in fact she can’t remember when she was this big before. When she goes out with the kids everyone is staring at her, especially when she is with Jonathan, who is only eight and half months old. The last few days Fran has been very tired so she has to take naps during the day. The next day Fran is in the kitchen when C.C. comes in. She says to Fran "goodness look at you again Fran, how many babies are you having this time? Two, three, Oh, Maxwell is going to love this". Then Fran starts crying - she says "that she hopes that Max doesn’t tell her to leave, then her and the children will end up in a shelter, she’ll gives birth to the twins, they’ll take all the kids away from her because she won’t be able to take care of them, what is she going to do?" All of a sudden Fran feels scared. She doesn’t know what will happen, but Fran needs her husband more than ever, if he tells her to leave she will, but right now she can’t go on like this anymore. Then Fran walks slowly into the office, and tells Max she needs to talk to him, he sees her tear-stained eyes, so he tells her he’ll be right with her. Then they go into the living room, he helps Fran to sit on the couch. Once they sit down Fran takes his hand then she puts her head on his shoulder. Max gently strokes her hair, asking Fran if C.C. said something to upset her, Fran said "kind of". But she told him "I need to tell you something, I should of, but I was afraid to." He asks "what darling". She says "we are having twins". Max says he already knows. Fran said how. He tells her that he thought she looked the same way when they had Matthew and Michelle, so he called the doctor, and got her to confirm it. He tells Fran not to worry, that she should rest as much as possible so nothing will happen to her or the twins. But Fran tells him they have five children she has to look after even with the help, she also has to figure out how to fit two more children into the house. Max then tells her that he knows she always wanted to live in Long Island, so he went to look at some houses in Great Neck. Fran can’t believe how sweet Max is being with her; then she kisses him passionately. Now Fran understands why they always keep getting into trouble, they love each other so much. Max says maybe they can go to look at some houses this weekend, but only take a couple of the kids; they don’t want to scare the realtor or owners. Fran says that is OK with her, but she isn’t sure if she wants to move or not. Max tells her they should look at the houses first.

That weekend Fran sees the houses, and she falls in love with them. There was one in particular they both liked so Max put a bid on it. If they got it, they would fix it up and move in after the twins are born. After about another week, Fran was so big, her back is so arched she could barely even move. This time she had to follow orders and mostly stay in bed. Max even had to take time off from work because Fran insisted the kids need at least one parent around, they couldn’t only be raised by help. Max thought it would be a chore to take care of the kids but he actually found he enjoyed it. He was able to play with the older kids, and found enjoyment in reading to the younger ones.

Fran has to stay in bed for a couple of more weeks; she hardly goes out of the house, only to see the doctor. The one day Max tells her that David’s throat was hurting him. They needed to take him to the doctor. Fran said she would take him, but Max told Fran she needed to stay in bed. Fran said she didn’t care; she needs to take care of her children. She was tired of staying in bed. Fran didn’t know how they got into this mess. She never wanted more than two or three children that was part of the reason she never married Danny. Now she was in a similar situation that she might have been in if she married Danny, but thank goodness she had a loving husband, money and help caring for her kids. Fran decided to go to the doctor with David and takes the twins and Nicole. When she got out of bed she was hardly able to walk, but since the babies were due any day she decided she would take the chance and take David to the doctor. First they all went out for lunch, then to the doctor’s office. After that she told the nanny to leave, she would take a car home. It took a few minutes for Fran to get settled, then she noticed that everyone was looking at her so she tried to read a magazine, but that didn’t last long, the twins starting getting wild and Nicole started acting out. Fran was beginning to wonder if her kids had behavior problems. Finally the doctor calls them in to see David. Fran follows him and the doctor sees she is having another baby. He examines David then tells Fran that he needs his tonsils out as soon as possible. Fran says she knows but they can’t do it right now with twins coming any day. Fran tells him of course she will have two new patients. Then she takes David out and sends the other kids for an exam. As soon as Fran sits down she feels a pain but tries to ignore it. After awhile the kids come out, then the doctor says to Fran that the kids seem fine except for their behavior, they may need to have some tests. This was too much so she decides to call Max to pick her up. It takes Max almost an hour to get to the office, by then Fran is in labor, although she didn’t tell anyone. When Max arrives he sees Fran, he immediately can tell that Fran is having the babies. He calls Niles to tell him to come to the doctor’s office with Grace to pick up the kids because he has to take Fran to the hospital. Then he helps Fran into the cab, she is extremely uncomfortable, but she is holding on to him so he can’t even move. He is worried about his wife; he has never seen her like this. After Fran got to her room in the hospital, Max calls Sylvia and his kids to come to the hospital; he needs his family with him.

A while later Fran has to have an operation which is more complicated than Max thought and the twins are born. The twins are healthy and big, over six pounds each. But the doctor tells him that Fran had some complications and she has to stay in the ICU unit overnight, Max practically collapses; everyone is afraid that he might pass out even though the doctor said that Fran should be OK.

Five days later a relieved Max takes home his wife and the twins who they named Jason and Jennifer. On the way home Max told Fran that their family was perfect the way it is – he didn’t want anymore children. After hearing that Fran kissed her husband, she finally felt relaxed and happy.
