Hi, this is a Fran/Max fic that I found in my old files, I wrote it several years ago but forgot to submit it! It's an Alternative Twist to a previous fic I wrote. Mary Ann

The Morning After

Maxwell Sheffield was frantically pacing back and forth in the bedroom of his butler Niles. Niles had just arrived home from the hospital after suffering a very mild heart attack.

Fran and Max had just returned from Europe. They were very close to making love in the London hotel room when Max suddenly stopped. He explained to a bewildered Fran that he was a gentleman. He was actually terrified of going past the point of no return, and confused about his feelings.

Fran was about to leave the hotel room in a huff when the phone rang. It was Maggie with the news that Niles had a heart attack. This had caused Fran to temporarily put the bedroom incident to the back of her mind.

The plane trip home had been hell. Fortunately, her seat was not near Max’s, so she could concentrate on Niles. By the time they had arrived at the hospital, she had put Mr. Sheffield out of her thoughts. By the next day, after knowing that Niles was going to be fine, she decided to leave the Sheffield’s. Life was too short.

She said as much to Mr. Sheffield. That’s when he took her in his arms and laid her down on the bed next to Niles. If C.C. hadn’t opened the curtain, who knows what would have happened.

“Niles...I've really done it this time! After Fran and I made out yesterday I just know she thinks that our relationship is farther along than it is. I'm just not ready to make a commitment!"

Niles, who has just come home to recover from a mild heart attack. "I think I really took advantage of her yesterday. Now what do I do?" He cried wringing his hands. Max remembered touching her breast for the first time. The memory caused him to shudder with surprising pleasure. He quickly dismissed the thought.

Niles gave him a dismayed look. He knew that Mr. Sheffield was in love with Miss Fine and had been for years. Niles had been so happy to wake up and hear his boss and the nanny making out in the hospital bed next to his. He could kick himself for tricking C.C. to interrupt them by asking her for an extra pillow.

C.C. wanted to help him and he pointed to the other bed. C.C. indicating that she could take the pillow from there. She had screamed when she discovered Fran and Max making out, naturally causing them to stop in embarrassment.

"Well, you could admit that you love the woman and marry her. What are you so bloody afraid of...sir?" Niles asked shaking his head. He was peddling on a stationary to strengthen his heart. He was also popping Tic Tacs whenever his boss was around, pretending that they were heart pills. This always got Max’s sympathy.

"I'm not afraid. I just don't think it's the right time to start anything that I can't take back," Max said stubbornly.

"Like saying 'I love you?' You certainly took that back easily enough.” Niles said snidely

"Oh, I wish I had never said 'I love you' in the first place!" Max cried, desperately running his hands through his hair and pacing back and forth. How can that one moment of weakness on that plane from Paris have caused me so much grief?

How can you not want to make love to her? She’s wonderful! Do you think she's going to wait around forever?"

"Miss Fine's not going anywhere," Max said rather smugly. "I'm just going to throw myself into my work. I’ll make sure I’m not around much so she won't have time to think about a relationship." The thought that his Nanny was firmly entrenched in is family calmed him slightly. She would never leave the children.

Max left a disgusted Niles to his exercise. He headed for his office and to his work.

Fran clicked off the intercom in the kitchen. She had been so happy when she thought after yesterday that she and Mr. Sheffield were finally going to that next step. At the sound of those words, Fran's blood ran cold. She was speechless and her heart skipped a beat. After they had made out on the hospital bed yesterday, she thought that he really loved her. The tears that were threatening to fall the last few minutes finally released. Her heart was pounding at the discovery of Mr. Sheffield's true feelings. She dragged herself through the living room up the stairs to her bedroom. She sat heavily on her bed and looked around the room. After a half hour of deep soul searching, Fran made a decision

Hearing him say those words has hurt her beyond belief. So, he really doesn't love me...he certainly couldn't have made it more clear. She thought as a lump formed in her throat.

"NO! I will not cry over him ever again," she decided. "And I'm not running away either. From now on, this is my job and nothing more. He's made it plain and clear, so, I can't blame him. I guess he was being honest when he explained that he only told me he loved me because he thought the plane was going to crash. It was I who didn't believe him. I really thought he was going to come around and just needed more time. I guess he can't help it if he really doesn't love me,"

Fran was bravely trying to justify what just happened but her heart was broken. The tears that she valiantly tried to control suddenly flowed freely. The permanence of the situation suddenly hit her and she collapsed on her bed clutching her pillow. Oh, I just love him so much! How could he hurt me like this...I guess that's all the proof I need that he doesn't love me. How can I stay here feeling as I do about him, and knowing he doesn't feel the same? But, I can't leave those kids...I love them too. "It's time for me to move on with my life. What nerve I had to think someone like him could go for me, anyway. Well, at least I know for sure now. I do know that I don't want to be alone for the rest of my life, but I can't fathom it without Mr. Sheffield," she whispered softly to herself.

Slowly the tears eased and she sat up. Well, I have only two choices...to stay or to leave. I'm going to stay. But, this is just a job to me now.

Fran took a deep breath, wiped her face and made a decision. "From now on, things are going to be different around here. She got up and went to her mirror to reapply her make-up. He's never going to hurt me again. She had a newfound resolve.

*****************

"Good morning, everyone," Fran said walking into the dining room. She was not her usual boisterous self. She sat at her place next to Maxwell and barley touched her breakfast.

Fran addressed the kids, but never even looked at him.

There's something not right here. Max thought, slightly worried. She's just not quite herself. Why is she obviously avoiding looking at me? No, you're just imagining things, he decided. It was probably just that time of the month.

After the kid left for school, Fran headed right up to her bedroom and got her purse. She came back down and informed Niles that she was going out, but didn’t say where…or with whom.

"Is something wrong, Miss Fine?" Niles asked noticing the change in her demeanor. He also noticed something else was missing but couldn’t quite put his finger on it.

"No, Niles...nothing." Fran said deciding not to tell him about what she had overheard on the intercom yesterday. I'm through crying on his shoulder. I just want to forget that I was ever in love with that man. Talking about it just dredges it back up. She convinced herself. She was actually proud of how she was holding up a good front when she actually felt so lousy. Seeing Mr. Sheffield this morning had been difficult, and it was all she could do to force her breakfast down. But she was determined.

***************

For the following week Fran did all she could to avoid Max. He was starting to notice that something was missing in his life...but what? He was so out of touch with himself that he didn’t realize that Miss Fine hadn’t jumped on his desk in one of her short skirts, or even been in his office for days. I wonder what she's doing. Well, I'll think about it later, I have to get this bloody work done.

Max tried to concentrate on his work but something was nagging at him. Suddenly it hit him. He hadn’t seen Miss Fine in a skirt for days. Come to think of it, it almost seems as if she were avoiding him. She seemed to find an excuse to leave the room whenever he arrived. I'd better find out if something is wrong after I finish this contract.

Fran was depressed in spite of herself. She was sitting on the couch in the living room deep in thought. She missed Mr. Sheffield. The last week had been hell for her. But, she was determined. He was sorry he said he loved her. She heard him say it with her own ears. She was wasting her life here. She knew she had some major decisions to make…and soon.

The doorbell rang, startling her out of her revelry. "I'll get it.” She walked over to the door and opened it. She let out a gasp when she discovered who was there.

"Hello, Fran!" Nigel exclaimed lifting her up and twirling her around the living room. "I've missed you! You look lovely!”

Fran was so surprised that her heart skipped a beat at the sight of him. For the first time in a week, she was genuinely happy. "Oh, Nigel!" she hugged him gratefully. "You don't know how glad I am to see you!"

Nigel was thrilled at her reaction. He really was disappointed that she didn't meet him at the ship and sail to London to get married last year. He had missed her and decided to pop in unannounced since he had business in New York. He had figured out that she loved his brother, but knowing Max as he did, his brother was probably was too afraid of his feelings to ever love her back. Perhaps she would give him another chance.

"So, luv...are you free for this evening? I want to treat you to dinner and dancing!” He was as irrepressible as ever dancing around her with a twinkle in his eyes. Always the naughty boy!

Fran chuckled at his antics. It was the first time she’d laughed in days. Fran did have feelings for Nigel, and was actually going to run off with him. But, she realized over the last year that even if she had gotten on that ship, she would have backed out. She had loved Maxwell Sheffield with all her heart and even though she was fond of his brother, she knew she could never go through with it.

Well, now she had another chance. With Maxwell out of her heart...his choice, not hers, she could really give his brother an honest shot. Fate sent him to me; I'm not going to blow it this time. She thought and was surprised that she was really pleased that he is here now. Maybe he's just what I need to get Mr. Sheffield out of my heart and soul.

"Oh, Nigel...that sounds wonderful! It's just exactly what I need! I have so much to tell you." She stopped as Max and Niles entered the living room.

"Nigel! This is a pleasant surprise!" Max said shaking his hand. “I'm afraid I must work this evening, again! I feel rotten about that since I neglected you so the last time you were here. But, I'll be free as a bird after tonight. Perhaps Miss Fine could..."

"Don't worry, Max. Fran and I have already decided to go dancing tonight." Nigel looked affectionately at Fran and she returned the look.

"Oh, good," Max said, this time a little uneasily. Even he noticed the look between them this time. Could they be attracted to each other? No, don't be an idiot. The poor little thing is in love with you. He thought. "Niles would you please prepare the guest room for my brother?"

Niles stared at him. How can he be so bloody stupid? A blind man could see that Nigel and Fran were attracted to each other. He's just throwing them into each other's arms. I am going to have to talk to Miss Fine. Something has happened between her and Mr. Sheffield. The last time Nigel was here she hid her affection for him, now she didn't seem to care who knew it.

Max returned to his office as Nigel and Fran walked up the stairs after Niles. "I'll be to ready to boogie-oogie-oogie in an hour Nigel," Fran says as she opened her bedroom door. "I'll meet you in the living room." She is stunned how good she suddenly feels.

"Can't wait, luv!" Nigel smiled kissing her tenderly. He followed Niles to the guest room.

Fran scanned her closet. "It must be fate that sent Nigel here. It's a sign that it is he and not Mr. Sheffield who I should be with. The timing is just incredible. I've been mourning Mr. Sheffield for a week, suddenly I feel alive again. Nigel always has that effect on me," she said to herself as she remembered how down she was just before his last visit. They had so much fun; he knocked her depression right out of her. That's one of the reasons she had considered running off and marrying him originally.

Nigel settled in to his room. I can't believe how lovely she is. My bloody brother is a fool, as much as I love him, he doesn't deserve to have her. He couldn't make her happy anyway. She needs someone with the same fire and spirit as herself. He pulled a small box out of his overnight bag and placed it in the top dresser drawer.

Max, Nigel and Niles were sipping brandy in the living room when Fran descended the staircase. The three Brits hearts started to pound madly as their mouths dropped open and their eyes opened wide as saucers. She was wearing the lowest cut emerald green dress. The skirt was mind-numbingly short.

"Hello, everyone! I'm ready Nigel...how do I look?" she said, innocently unaware that her appearance was having a drastic effect on the three of them.

"Oh, luv! You absolutely take my breath away!" Nigel cried running over to her and taking her in his arms.

Max's eyes opened even wider at Nigel's actions. Niles looked at his boss and was relieved by Max's expression that he seemed to finally get it. Maybe this will finally spur him into action.

"Don't wait up!" he said giving Max and Niles a wink as they headed out the door.

Max downed his brandy in one gulp. Niles looked at him under arched eyebrows. "Well, I hope you're happy, sir. It looks like she' going to have a marvelous time tonight. I haven't seen her this happy in a week. He walked away shaking his head.

Max suddenly felt something gnawing at the back of his mind. Something he had said? He shook off the unsettling feeling and walked back into his office to tackle all that work. He suddenly wanted to make sure he was free tomorrow night.

At dinner, Nigel was having a hard time keeping from touching Fran. He was so drawn to her. She's just unlike any other woman I've ever known! She can make me laugh...I've never felt like this. I really think I truly love her!

Nigel was quite pleased with himself. Fran was her old self after just an hour in his company. He knew he would be able to get her out of her depression. He had a natural way with the ladies. Nigel as a young man was a bit of a rakish rogue. Actually he still was, given the opportunity. He never had trouble getting women into his bed. Nigel absolutely loved women. He had always tried to be up front with his conquests and even after the relationship ended, he had stayed friends with the ladies he had bedded. His incorrigible charm and manner captivated the women he seduced. Most had realized up front that he was a man who would never be tamed or settle down. He had always showed them such a good time that they were hesitant to let him out of their lives permanently after the short relationship ended.

Nigel, Maxwell and their sister Jocelyn grew up in a home with very little outward love and affection displayed by their cold parents towards them. Actually, if it hadn't been for their butler, Niles Sr., they wouldn't know what real love was. The Sheffield children were practically raised by him while their selfish parents globe trotted the world.

Niles Sr. was a good and honorable man and he handed these fine traits down to his three young charges. Because of him, Maxwell and Nigel absorbed no traits of their self-centered parents. Their sister Jocelyn was the most self-absorbed of the three, but even she wasn't nearly as bad as their parents.

Lately Nigel had been feeling restless. He had purchased his club in Paris on a whim. His mother had ordered Maxwell to fly to France to talk him out of it two months ago. Maxwell had initially agreed with her until he witnessed for himself what a wonderful investment it was. Nigel had finally grown up. His success had caused Max to be a little jealous of his brother. Buying his nightclub and successfully running it was grand, but Nigel was feeling that something was missing in his life. It was time to settle down. Fran was the catalyst that made him realize it.

Nigel gazed into Fran's eyes. He was delighted that she was once again the happy, breathtaking creature he had a crush on in Paris. Her cheeks were flush with excitement, which made her look even more beautiful. Her looks aside, she made Nigel laugh out loud. He adored her sense of humor and outrageous personality. He had never met any woman like her. Most of the ladies he dated were beautiful, British and boring. Until this very night, he didn't even know he was attracted to a woman with a sense of humor. Simply put, Nigel Sheffield was falling in love. He had never really been in love before.

Nigel was lost in thoughts of her still gazing into her eyes. Fran was chattering on about one of her ridiculous relatives. "Nigel, I asked you a question. Where's your mind?" Fran said playfully slapping his chest.

"You don't want to know," he said seductively. God she's just lovely. To his chagrin he could feel himself get hard at the sight of her. "Um, what did you ask me?" He looked at her and was praying that she didn't notice his sudden arousal.

"I asked if you wanted to dance! I love this song!" she said getting out of her chair. "We haven't slow danced all evening." Nigel jumped up and led her to the dance floor willingly. More Than a Woman was emanating from the speakers. Nigel took Fran into his arms and held her close. Not too close though, he didn't want to scare the hell out of her.

"Nigel, for some reason it just feels so right dancing to this song with you." Fran murmured, looking up at him. Fran was surprised that she is suddenly experiencing tender feelings towards Nigel. She had been deprived of love and affection from a man for so long now, that the attention Max's brother was showering on her was almost overwhelming her. She was having a marvelous time.

Nigel's arousal had thankfully disappeared. He finally felt comfortable drawing Fran closer to him..

"Nigel, I am sorry about what happened last time you were here," Fran began.

"Oh, that's alright darling...I figured out that you were really in love with Max. Anyone could have seen that."

"Nigel, just so you know..." she confesses. "I did go to meet you at the pier. I was late and got there just in time to see you sailing away."

Nigel's eyes shot wide open and his heart started beating faster. He smiled and took her hand. "Oh, Fran...are you serious? Why didn't you call me? I would have flown back here to get you!" He was thrilled and stunned at her confession.

"Because, you were right. I was desperately in love with your brother. I realized how unfair it would be to you. Last week I learned once and for all that he doesn't return my love. You see, when we were flying back from visiting you in Paris we experienced some awful turbulence. Mr. Sheffield thought that the plane was going to crash. He hugged me and told me he loved me. When we got home safely, he took it back," he said, tearing up a little at the memory.

Niles hugs her sympathetically. That bloody fool! He thought shaking his head.

“Then last week we started to be intimate. I overheard him tell Niles that he wished it hadn’t happened! I thought he just needed more time...that he really did love me. Well, last week I found out how wrong I was. That's when I realized what a fool I've been these last few months. It's been very difficult this past week, but I think I'm gradually getting over him. I'm so glad you're here!" She spontaneously hugged him.

The disco was rocking and Fran was having a great time. In fact, the last time she had this much fun was a year ago in this very room...with Nigel. This thought didn't escape her. They were dancing to I Will Survive. When the song changed to Don't Throw It All Away Nigel took her in his arms. They looked deeply into each other's eyes and Fran's heart skipped a beat as they slowly danced to the music. For some reason this song lately reminded her of Nigel. Oh, my...I really think I could love this man. I hope it's not just a rebound thing...but really, Mr. Sheffield and I never had a real relationship. It was one-sided, at best. She convinced herself.

Since finishing his work, for the last several hours, Maxwell had been sitting on the couch sipping a scotch in the living room staring into the fire. It disturbed him that Miss Fine and Nigel were out so late, and he was still worried about her demeanor this past week. He went over what could be bothering her. Suddenly it hit him. "Oh my god! The Intercom! She didn’t eavesdrop and hear my conversation to Niles! Of course she did!. Did I say it? I did! You blithering idiot! You told Niles you'd wish you’d never said you loved her!" he cried out loud jumping up off the sofa.

"Yes, since then she has avoided me. That's when she started dressing so conservatively. She's been so business-like with me this past week...well, I bloody hate it!" He realized. "I've got to apologize to her. How could I have hurt her like that? What an insensitive beast," he whispered taking a long sip of his drink. He looked at his watch and started to get nervous. It's after one am! What are they doing out so late? She never stays out this late when she's with Val!

Just then the front door quietly opened. Nigel led Fran in. He stopped and looked tenderly down at her. Suddenly he took her in his arms and kissed her deeply. She returned the kiss with the same fervor. "Oh, Nigel," she gasped.

Max stared in open-mouth disbelief. His heart started pounding madly at this horrifying scene. "What the bloody hell is going on here!" he cried startling them.

"Oh, hello Max...what are you doing up?" Nigel said casually.

Fran didn’t make a move to break away from Nigel's embrace as she did last year when Max walked in on them kissing in the kitchen. Why should I feel guilty...he has no claims on me anymore.

Max hurried over to them. "What's the meaning of this Nigel? Let her go!" he said angrily.

Nigel just smiled at him. Fran was starting to get angry. "Mr. Sheffield, what's your problem? I don't want him to let me go!" She looked lovingly at Nigel. He reached down and kissed her again, passionately.

Max gasped. He felt like he's been kicked in the stomach. The sight of the two of them was too much to comprehend. I thought she loves me, how could she kiss my brother like that! "Miss Fine...how could you?" he finally managed.

Fran gave him a confused look. "How could I what, Mr. Sheffield? What am I doing that's wrong?"

"I thought, um, I mean...well, don't you uh...love me?" he said uneasily blushing slightly.

Fran mouth dropped open. She couldn’t believe her ears. That he would actually ask her that. She quickly thought it over and decided to confess. "I...I did, Mr. Sheffield, with all my heart up until a week ago," she said shaking her head sadly. She turned back to Nigel.

"Good night, Nigel. I had a wonderful time. I'll see you in the morning." She smiled and gave him small kiss. "Good night Mr. Sheffield." She gave him a sad look and retreated for her room.

"Wait for me love. I'm going up too. I'll see you to your door." Nigel said hurrying up the stairs after her. "Good night, Max!"

Max's heart was now pounding madly. He was in a slight state of shock. His trembling legs finally carried him back to the sofa where he pounds down the remainder of his scotch. "What the bloody hell just happened here? Miss Fine and Nigel? How could they do this to me?" he cried putting his head in his hands.

"Why do I feel so horrible...I'm the one who didn't want her to be in love with me! Why aren't I relieved that she doesn't, anymore? Because you love her you blasted fool!" He whispered suddenly realizing the truth. "I never knew how much my words wounded her. Why didn't she react when I said it? Did I finally hurt her once too often? Now what the hell do I do?" Defeated he climbed the stairs to his room to try to sleep.

Fran put on her pajamas and climbed into bed. I can't believe Mr. Sheffield's reaction to Nigel and me kissing! She was confused. He made it clear to me he's not in love. I've never seen him act so jealous. There was no doubt that it was jealousy. Could I be wrong? Does he really love me? Well, too bad. How long did he think I would stick around? Nigel and I are more suited than that stuffed shirt boss of mine. She convinced herself finally falling to sleep.

Max on the other hand had no chance at sleep. He tossed and turned for hours going over in his mind taking back his profession of love. He was racked with guilt and is genuinely afraid that he had lost her forever. That horrifying kiss that he had witnessed tonight was full of passion. It shook him to his core. I've got to get her back, she's mine. He finally realized. I've got to think of something...but what? He fell into a restless sleep.

*****************

"Good morning everyone!" Fran cried entering the dining room in her shortest tight skirt. Max noticed that she has gone back to her old look and was not as happy as he would have been. He realized she was now dressing for his brother.

"Oh, Fran...you do look lovely!" Nigel exclaimed jumping up to hold her chair as she sat. "Are you hungry?"

"Famished! Oh, thank you Niles." She said smiling up at him as he hands her a full plate. "Where are the children? I guess I should know that, I'm sorry I overslept." She winked at Nigel. "Someone kept me out late last night."

He smiled lovingly back at her.

Oh, god...I just want to wretch. Max thought glumly witnessing the two of them. They almost look like they are truly in love. He looked at Niles who was also watching them worriedly.

"It's Saturday...they left an hour ago," Niles informed her giving Max a curious look. He definitely can see something's going on between them. I wonder if he plans to do anything about it. There is definitely chemistry between them, anyone can see it.

"So, Nigel! I've finished my work and have made reservations for the three of us at the Rainbow Room this evening," Max said trying to sound cheerful. "You said you have business meetings today, so I've made them for six o'clock. How does that sound?"

"That's fine with me, how about you darling?" He looked adoringly at Fran.

"Oh, I love the Rainbow Room! I'm going to buy a new dress!" she said excitedly. To Maxwell's distress, Nigel pulled out his platinum card and handed it to her.

"Buy whatever you want, luv! Sky's the limit! I want you to look smashing tonight!" Nigel said finishing his breakfast. "I have to run, see you tonight." He gave her a tender kiss on the lips.

Niles almost dropped his serving spoon and Max turned his head away. The sight of them was beginning to make him physically nauseous. Oh, god...I can't take this much longer. I have to do something! I'm at a loss...well I can certainly start by apologizing for what I said to Niles last week.

"Um...Miss Fine, could I see you in my office please?" he got up from the table and headed for his office.

"Sure, I'll be right in Mr. Sheffield. I just want to finish my waffle." This gave Niles the opportunity to talk to her privately. He sat down in Mr. Sheffield's chair. "Ok, dish! What's going on between you and Nigel? I thought you were crazy about Mr. Sheffield...what's going on? I noticed how distant you've been to him this last week. What happened?

"Slow down, Niles!" She smiled at him. "Oh, Niles...I think I'm really starting to fall for Nigel! We have so much fun, and he has no problem declaring his feelings for me. He is really the exact opposite of his brother, and that ain't bad! I didn't tell you how Mr. Sheffield hurt me last week because it was the last straw and I decided that I was going to get over him." She proceeded to tell him the whole story starting with 'The Thing' on the plane right up to the now infamous make out in the hospital room incident." She had Niles horrified attention.

"Oh, Miss Fine! How could he? What is wrong with him? It's just not right! I know he loves you, there's no doubt in my mind!"

"Well, he sure has a funny way of showing it," she said a little sadly. "Niles I truly believe that it was fate that brought Nigel here at this time. He brought me out of my depression. I think I could fall in love with him! Well, I better go see what Mr. Sheffield wants." She got up, brushed off here skirt and headed for his office.

Niles watched her leave and shook his head sadly. He knew that Fran and Max belonged together. Now what was he going to do?

Fran knocked on the office door. "You wanted to see me Mr. Sheffield?" she cheerfully walked in and stood in front of his desk.

"Miss Fine, what are you doing way over there? Come...sit on my desk." He patted the corner of the desk enticingly.

"Oh, I don't think that's appropriate, anymore. After all I am your children's nanny," she said formally. "What did you want to see me about?"

Her demeanor was making Max sad and more than a little nervous. Has she lost that connection we once had? Have I really finally held her at arms length once to often? He started to panic a little. He got up and moved to her side. "Please sit on the love seat with me for a minute," he took her hand and led her to the small couch. They sat down and he looked deeply into her eyes.

"Miss Fine. I just realized something. I think I may have said something very stupid to Niles last week. I was under a lot of stress with all my work and didn't mean it when I told you I was sorry I ever told you I loved you." he said nervously. His heart started to beat faster looking deeply into her eyes waiting for her reaction.

Fran looked down at her hands. "I'm over it, Mr. Sheffield. It did hurt me deeply, but it is for the best. It made me realize that you were telling the truth when you took back 'The Thing'. I thought you just needed more time, but you really did want to be just friends." She looked up at him and smiled sadly. "I did love you so much, this last week it's been very hard for me getting over you. I think fate stepped in and brought your brother to me. I never told you this, but last year when Nigel was here we became quite close. He asked me to marry him. I am very fond of him, but was in love with you at the time...so I didn't." She withheld the fact that she actually went to meet Nigel and missed the ship.

Max gasped at her confession. He was really starting to panic now. Oh, god! He wanted to marry her? She really does...did love me, and now she's over me? She thinks fate sent Nigel back to her? He was trying to digest everything she had just told him. What the bloody hell should I do?

Fran looked at her watch. "Well, I have to go shopping, Mr. Sheffield. I accept your apology...no hard feelings," she said kissing him lightly on the cheek. She got up and left the office.

Max was stunned that she so could blithely leave him. He sat dejectedly on the love seat. I think I've really lost her this time!

Having heard the whole conversation on the intercom, Niles walked in just as Miss Fine left for Bloomingdale's. "Oh, Niles! I'm sure you heard everything. What are we going to do? I think she's starting to fall for my brother!" Max looked up at his butler and nervously ran all ten fingers through his thick hair.

Niles shrugged his shoulders. "What do you care, sir? You're not in love with her. Why don't you want her to be happy?" He looked smugly at his boss.

"Huh? What do you mean, old boy? Well, of course I love her!" he said angrily. "How could she do this to me?"

"Oh, you declared your love for her?" Niles acted surprised. "When did you do this? You actually committed yourself to her? Then she should be ashamed for carrying on with Nigel!" he said in mock disapproval.

"What? Oh, shut up Niles! I don't need your sarcasm. If you're not going to help then just leave!"

"Mr. Sheffield, why don't you just tell her the truth? What are you so bloody afraid of? You've loved her for years now...you've never been able to hide anything from me. I've known your feelings since that night you waited up for her when she went on that wretched date with Brock Storm. That was four years ago! All this time, you've done nothing about it."

Niles continued. "She's a normal young woman, what did you expect from her? And Nigel is a handsome young man. You better do something before something happens between them. How would you like it if they made love? You know Nigel has no trouble getting women into his bed." That should set a fire under him. Niles thought

Max's head snapped up in horror. "Don't even think that Niles!" The thought of his Fran and Nigel in bed together caused him to shiver. "You're right. I have to tell her my feelings before it's too late, if it's not already."

Niles smiled and was greatly relieved. "Do whatever you have to do, sir. Your family and I are counting on you," he said encouragingly.

Nigel got home early from his meeting and walked up the living room stairs. He went into his bedroom to retrieve that box from his drawer. He walked to Fran's room and knocked on the door.

"Oh, hello Nigel! You're home early." She smiled, standing aside to let him in her room.

"Fran, I have something important to ask you," He smiled a little nervously. "The reason I am here in New York because I've sold my nightclub to investors here. I was just signing the papers. I am going to move to New York!" He nervously awaited her reaction.

Fran was thrilled at the news. "How wonderful!" she exclaimed hugging him.

Relieved by her obvious joy, he settles down a bit. "Um, Fran...I have to tell you...I am in love with you. Would you do me the great honor of becoming my wife?" He slowly opened the box revealing a stunning six-carat princess cut diamond ring.

She gasped as he put it on her trembling finger. Oh my god! I don't believe it. He is the exact opposite of his brother. She thought tremulously, staring at the incredible ring in astonishment. "Oh, Nigel...yes, I will." She kissed him tenderly. I knew fate brought him to me. Well, I guess Maxwell Sheffield really wasn't my destiny. At least I will be part of the family now. She fought off a feeling of sadness and focused on the man in front of her.

"Oh, darling! You don't know how happy you've made me! I'm sailing tomorrow for London, again. This time you must come with me! We can have the wedding in New York when we get back, or wherever you want! You're the boss!" he said twirling her around the room.

"I'd love to go with you! Oh, it's getting late, we better get ready for dinner! We can tell your brother at dinner together! I hate to leave him on this short of notice, but, the kids are so grown up...they don't really need a nanny anymore, especially Brighton and Maggie. Besides, now they are getting a new aunt. Since we'll be living in New York, I'll see them all the time!" She was starting to really feel more comfortable with her impetuous decision.

"Well, luv...I'm taking you to the ship personally tomorrow evening. They'll be no missing it this time! Pack all warm clothes, it's no Caribbean Cruise, you know," he says smiling. I'm going to call Cunard and book another suite, that is unless you want to stay in mine." He looked at her hopefully hugging her close to him.

"Oh, Nigel...I think it's a little too soon for that, if you don't mind. I think, for now, I would feel more comfortable with my own cabin," she said a little shyly.

"No problem, whatsoever!" He kissed her tenderly and left to make the travel arrangements.

Fran sat on her bed and looked down at the beautiful ring. "I've made the right decision. Mr. Sheffield doesn't love me...well the other Mr. Sheffield. Why do I feel a little sad...I guess I'm not quite as over him as I thought I was," she whispered ruefully. Well, I could certainly do worse than Nigel! Now, Fran, be happy! She ordered herself as she took a deep breath and stood up. She ran a hot bath and got ready to face her boss with the news.

Max didn’t notice the sparkling rock on Fran's left hand as the three of them got into the waiting limo. They arrived at the Rainbow Room and made small talk over cocktails. As the orchestra started playing Just The Way You Look Tonight. Nigel grabbed Fran and escorted her to the dance floor.

Max could only watch in despair as they stared lovingly into each other's eyes. He was crazy with jealousy at how closely Nigel was holding her. The song ended and they walked back to the table.

"Well, Max!" Nigel said. "Congratulate us, we're getting married!" He put his arm around Fran as she looked down at the floor a little nervously, anticipating Mr. Sheffield's reaction. She looked up as Max yelped.

"What? Married! Max stared at Fran...a look of betrayal in his eyes. Suddenly he composed himself. "I mean...congratulations old boy. He looked at Fran's hand. "I must say that is a brilliant ring." He took Fran's hand and admired the ring, not wanting them to see the emotion in his eyes or the fact that his heart was pounding through his chest.

"Isn't it gorgeous?" She smiled relieved that he seems to be taking the news well. "I'm sorry I can't give you two weeks notice, Mr. Sheffield, but we're sailing tomorrow night to London on the Queen Elizabeth II. We're going to get married here in New York when we return. He's taking this so well, I guess I was wrong about him being jealous!

"I'd like you to be my best man, Max." Nigel said beaming at his brother.

"I consider it an honor," he said through clenched teeth, never taking his gaze away from Miss Fine. He stared straight into her eyes until she could stand it no longer and cast her eyes down. Only then did he look at his brother.

"So, this calls for champagne!" He called the waiter over and ordered a bottle of Dom Perignon. How the bloody hell am I going to get through this evening...I'm going to make an excuse, I can't stand seeing them together. "By the way, I'm going to have to cut the evening short...problems at the theatre. I'll leave you the limo and take a taxi home, after I see to things there.

He stood up to make a toast. "To my brother and friend. And to the most wonderful woman I have ever met. I will be eternally grateful for what you've done for me and my family." He looked deeply into Fran's eyes. "You will be greatly missed."

His voice slightly cracked at the last word. Miss Fine noticed and it caused tears to burn her eyes. Max took a sip of his wine and shook Nigel's hand. Then he tenderly took Fran's hand and softly kissed the back of it. "I must run...you two have fun."

Max walked away from the table and out the restaurant. As soon as he was safely in the elevator his trembling knees gave way. He grabbed the rail to keep from collapsing to the floor. "Oh my god," he whispered. "That's it...it's really finally happened, she's gone for good." He slowly composed himself and headed to the lobby. Outside he hailed a taxi to take him away from this wretched place.

************

Fran and Nigel had their suitcases gathered at the front door of the Sheffield mansion. The QE2 didn’t sail for six hours but Nigel was taking no chances this time. He wanted to board in plenty of time. Maggie, Brighton and Gracie sat glumly in the living room. Fran had explained everything earlier to them. They understood why she was leaving. They were old enough to be happy for her, but were devastated at losing her. All three were furious with their father...knowing he blew it. At least Fran would be their aunt and part of the family. She said that they would be living nearby. That really cushioned the blow for the kids...of course; it didn't help Max at all. If anything, it made this whole dire situation worse.

Maxwell walked numbly to his bedroom. He sat on the sofa in front of the fireplace. Oh dear god! I never thought I would feel this blasted lousy again. Max got up and decided he had to see her one last time before she left. He was inexplicably drawn to her. He walked out the door to the top of the stairs and headed down to the living room. He was stunned at the sight of Fran and C.C. in each other's arms tearfully saying goodbye. Since Max had obviously been in love with Fran, C.C. finally admitted to herself that he was not for her. And, she was inexplicably drawn to another man…though she was loath to admit it. Now that Niles was in her heart, she had no reason to be jealous of Nanny Fine.

The fact was that C.C. felt quite badly for Fran. She knew that Fran was in love with Max, and had a feeling that she was just marrying Nigel on the rebound. She was actually going to miss her. Like Maxwell, C.C. was really good hearted, though it was buried very deeply. "Goodbye, Fran. I'll visit you in London." She helped Val take Fran's belongings to the car. C.C. suddenly remembered how Fran had given up Barbra tickets just so C.C. could go to the concert with her father.

The children have now converged on Fran all at once. Despite themselves, they clutched her tightly and sobbed uncontrollably. Gracie was nearly hysterical, begging her not to go. They were clinging to her as if for dear life. Fran collapsed to her knees and took all three in her arms at once, sobbing desperately. Niles wasn't faring much better. He was standing next to the sad group dabbing his eyes with his handkerchief.

Max was horrified as he witnessed the abject sorrow that he his repressed emotions have caused his family. He had only been thinking of himself. He hadn’t even considered the loss to his family. Oh my god! He put his hand on the banister to steady himself. His heart was pounding through his chest and he was actually having trouble breathing. The sight of his dear children and nanny in so much pain was making him physically nauseous.

Niles spotted him. He was stunned to see the sick expression on Max's face. He rushed up the stairs to assist Mr. Sheffield down. Niles was truly afraid that Max is about to faint. He managed to lead him to the landing.

"Miss Fine. How can you leave me…I mean the children like this?” Max cried rushing over to her. The children couldn't believe their ears and let out a yelp.

Fran just looked sadly down at them. "I'm sorry my loves...I have to go." She looked at Max. Even now he couldn’t say it.

Max looked at Fran and their eyes locked. Niles wasn’t unaware of the look they gave each other. Anyone could see that they loved each other. Fran gave Max one last sad smile and turned around. She walked out the door and out of their lives as suddenly as she had walked into it.

At her departure Maggie and Brighton raced upstairs to their room. They have begun sobbing uncontrollably again. C.C. actually had to carry Gracie as she had collapsed in a heap at C.C.'s feet. She was suddenly harboring tender feelings for the kids. Seeing their tremendous grief has shocked and saddened C.C. Perhaps because she knew somewhat how they were feeling. Niles watched her ascend the staircase with Gracie in her arms in amazement before he turned his full attention to his boss.

Maxwell had dragged himself over to the couch. He was sitting up with is head resting on the back looking straight up, not seeing a thing. Niles sat next to him. "You know she loves you, don't you?" Max nodded, almost imperceptivity "You know that you love her...don't you?" Max's heart skipped a beat as he heard it said out loud. He didn’t move an inch but as Niles watched him he was stunned to witness a stream of tears appear and run down the side of Max's face.

"Niles, what am I going to do? She’s marrying my brother. He sat up and wiped his eyes with his handkerchief. He looked hopelessly at Niles. "What do I do?" He said desperately.

"Oh sir, it's your life! You know what you have to do." Niles said a glimmer of hope forming that they haven't seen the last of their nanny.

Maxwell realized of course that Niles is right. How could I not tell her I love her before she left? Was I insane?

In the kitchen Niles mind went back to last night. Mr. Sheffield had come home from having dinner with Fran and Nigel and had retreated to his office with a large bottle of scotch. After about two hours, Niles became worried about him and entered the office. "I've lost her Niles...she's marrying my brother." Niles almost passed out when he saw that Mr. Sheffield was sobbing. He hadn’t seen him cry since his wife died nine years ago. He was now very drunk and a little incoherent. Niles led him up to his room, undressed him and put him to bed.

Suddenly Max hugged him like a child and wailed. "Oh god, Niles...what have I done!? He buried his head into Niles chest, his body shaking uncontrollably. Niles just rocked him like he had when he was a child. His heart broke for him, even though he brought it on himself. Eventually, he had cried himself out and he fell into a drunken sleep. With tears in his own eyes Niles covered his boss up, shut out the lights and quietly closed the door.

Fran's heart was breaking. She was, for the first time, starting to wonder if she was making the right decision. Leaving them all is so hard! I love them...they're my family! She thought desperately. How could Mr. Sheffield not admit his feelings? Well, I guess that just proves how much he cares! She found new resolve in that and walked over to Nigel. Actually, she was hurt to the core Max didn’t say he loved her. She turned and waved as they walk out of the mansion.

"What's the matter, luv...you seem sad. Are you having second thoughts?" Nigel asked slightly worriedly. He put his arm around her as the limo drove to the pier.

"Oh, Nigel...I'm such a horrible person. I think I am still in love with your brother! I just can't get him out of my mind," she said soft tears suddenly falling.

"I know that, luv...that's why I wanted to get you away from there. I figured I could win your heart on this cruise." He gently nuzzled her neck. "If you aren't comfortable with me, you know I would never hold you to anything you didn't want," he said smiling sadly down at her.

She looked up at him gratefully. "Thank you Nigel. "The last thing I would ever want to do is hurt you. You know how long I have been in love with your brother...I don't think it's going to be easy to forget him. I just want to be totally honest with you."

"Darling...I just want you to be happy." He hugged her tightly.

The limo took them to New York Harbor. They pulled up the passenger boarding area. Nigel helped Fran out of the back seat and then turned to the driver to get the luggage.

Fran looked at the magnificent ship. Her mind raced back to what should have been with Mr. Sheffield. She swallowed, took a deep breath and was determined to forget him. She looked misty eyed at the happy passengers and wondered if she would ever be that happy again. She already missed the Sheffield’s tremendously. She knew it would never be the same with them again, even if she became their aunt. She was stunned that her future wouldn’t include Maxwell Sheffield.

She took a handkerchief out of her purse and discreetly patted her eyes dry. She looked sadly at the passengers boarding the ship. Suddenly parting the crowd of people waiting to board, walking straight towards her was a man wearing a black overcoat with a black turtleneck and pants. As he purposely walked closer her unbelieving heart starting pounding and her trembling legs lead her slowly towards him. She was close enough now to see the gray streak in his beautiful black hair, and the tears that were in his green eyes. They never broke stride as they found each other's arms. He hugged her tightly to him, his body trembling with emotion.

"I love you more than life itself. Please don't leave me," he sobbed, burying his head into her hair. He clutched her as if his life depended on it. His heart was now pounding through his chest.

"Oh, Mr. Sheffield...Max," she sobbed hanging on to him. "I can't leave you. I love you too!"

Nigel witnessed the passionate scene and sadly shook his head. He knew that he couldn’t take Fran away from his brother. I really have no right to her. She will always belong to him…and him to her.

He loaded her bags back into the limo and walked to them. He embraced them both in their embrace. "I love you both...be happy," he whispered. He took the ring that Fran had taken off her finger and discreetly slipped it to him.

Maxwell had no intention of letting Fran go, With his face still buried in her hair, Max touched Nigel on the shoulder with his left hand. He was beyond grateful that his brother was so understanding.

Nigel gently patted his brother on the shoulder. With a bittersweet smile he walked slowly to the ship, never looking back.
