In the office... Fran enters..

Max: Darling, my mother called and wanted me to come to London for some

days. The problem is that I’ve got an important business dinner to go to. I

wanted to ask you if you maybe could go...?

Fran: What did she want? Have something happened?

Max: You will not believe it: She wants to remarry again.

Fran: What? Who?

Max: It’s the Earl of Kent.

Fran: That sounds wonderful.

Max: Maybe. So, could you fly to help her with the preparations? She wants

to marry in five weeks, together with the whole family. Maybe you can help

her with the wedding arrangements.

Fran: Sure. When goes the flight?

Max: Tomorrow evening.

Fran: Okay. I’ll tell the kids and Ma. Are you home for dinner tonight?

Max: Yes. Okay, I have to work again. I see you. (gives her a kiss)

In the evening, after the dinner... Fran brings the twins into their beds...

Fran: Okay, babies, sleeping-time.

Eve: Mommy, do you really have to go away?

Fran: Sweetie, it’s just for four days, I’m back on Tuesday. I’m going

tomorrow evening and you two have daddy and Gracie. Maybe Maggie and Grandma

will come along. You’ll be not alone in here.

Jonah: Will you call to say goodnight?

Fran: Sure, baby. Now, don’t worry any longer and close your eyes, the both

of you. I love you.

Jonah&Eve: Night mommy.

Fran: Night.

She switches off the light and closes the door... Then she goes

downstairs...

Grace: Mom, I’m at Bobbie’s. We want to watch some videos.

Fran: Stop! Before you leave I wanna talk to you.

Grace: Did I anything wrong?

Fran: No. When I’m absent the upcoming four days, I want you to help your

father with the house and the twins. He has a lot of business to do. I’ll

buy some groceries, tomorrow. Maybe you can cook the meals. If you need any

help just call Grandma. She’ll come over.

Grace: Okay. Can I go, now?

Fran: Sure, have fun... but not too much!

Grace: Bye!

Fran sits on the couch in the living room when Maxwell enters....

Max: Hi, darling. What are you doing?

Fran: Hi, sweetie. (they share a kiss) Watching TV.

He gets a seat next to Fran and lays his arm around her; she lays her head

on his chest...

Max: What’s the matter?

Fran: Nothing.

Max: Come on, what’s bothering you? You seem to be so far away.

Fran: Oh, I just thought about the trip to London. (a minute of silence) I’m

gonna miss you and the kids.

Max: They’ll miss you, too. And me, too. But maybe it’s not bad for you

having a bit time for yourself between the preparations. You have so much to

do with the household and raising the kids. You earned some free time,

honestly.

Fran: Maybe you’re right. Do you think your mother thinks, it’s okay when I’

m coming instead of you?

Max: Sure, she’ll be happy to have you on her side. You know so much more

about those things... I’m really tired. What about you?

Fran: Yes. It’s very late already. I have to get up early in the morning. I’

ve got a hundred things to do before I can leave.

They go to bed... The next evening comes fast...

Max: Okay, kids, say goodbye to your mom.

Grace: Bye, mom. Have a good flight.

Fran: Thanks. And help your father with doing the household and caring for

the twins tonight because your father has his business dinner this evening.

Grandma will come along tomorrow. She wants to look after the twins, so you

can go out.

Grace: Okay. Thank you. (they give each other a hug)

Fran: [to Eve&Jonah] And you’ll obey your sister. Be good kids! Come here...

(takes them into her arms) I love you...

Max: Okay, Fran, we gotta drive to the airport.

Fran: Yes. Bye kids.

Kids: Bye!

At the airport....

Fran: Don’t work the whole weekend. Spend some time with the kids, okay?

Max: Sure. I just have my business dinner tonight and my meeting in the

morning.

Fran: You’ll get along?

Max: Fran, I’m experienced in raising kids. Remember? And if I need help, I’

ll call Sylvia. Don’t worry, we’ll get along... You have to go into the

plane.

Fran: Okay.

Max: Come here. (they give each other a long hug and a long kiss) Call me

when you’re in London. I’ll be awake.

Fran: I’ll do. I love you, Max.

Max: I love you more. Now, go!

The plane starts and Max drives to the restaurant for his dinner with the

directors and writers.

Twelve hours later, Fran’s plane lands in London Heathrow where Elizabeth is

already waiting and still thinking her son’s coming. She’s surprised...

Elizabeth: Fran, what are you doing here? Where’s Maxwell?

Fran: Hi, Elizabeth. Maxwell asked me to come because he has to work. I want

to help you with the preparations for the wedding.

Elizabeth: I think, that wouldn’t be good.

Fran: But why?

Elizabeth: Well, don’t worry. I’ll book you the next flight back to Los

Angeles.

Fran: No! Max asked me to come to you and I’ll help you. Can we go now?

Elizabeth: All right. Along there...

In the evening, Maxwell calls Fran but before he talks to her, her talks to

his mother... Fran goes along the floor and comes to the room where

Elizabeth complains about Fran on the phone...

Elizabeth: Maxwell, how could you have sent me this woman? You know that I

dislike her. How could you have married her? She’s loud and vulgar! (Maxwell

replies) Yes, I’ll get her on the phone.

Fran!

Fran who heard everything, cleans her face from the tears and enters the

room...

Fran: Yes?

Elizabeth: It’s Maxwell on the phone. He wants to talk to you.

Fran: Thanks. I get it in my room. (goes into the guestroom and talks to

Max) Hello Max.

Max: I talked to mother and she told me how much she appreciates your stay

in London.

Fran: Maxwell, don’t lie. I heard everything she told you on the phone. She

hates me and I can’t understand why. I thought, during the preparations we

could get closer but now, I... I wanna come home.

Max: Don’t give up. I know how wonderful you are and I know that you can get

her on your side. Give it two days and she’ll change. You’re the wife of her

son and the mother of her grandchildren. Try to use this knowledge.

Fran: Why does she hate me? I didn’t do anything to her. I think she wants

you to leave me. I know that. I heard her talking to her finance about me.

Max: She’ll never could make me doing this. I love you about everything, no

matter what she wants. I had no idea that this stay would be such a torture

for you. I’m so very sorry. Oh, I wish I could take you in my arms. Please,

if you can’t bear it any longer, I’ll book you a flight back.

Fran: Don’t worry, that would your mother do. She wanted to send me back

right after I came out of the plane. I’ll talk to her and when it doesn’t

help, I’ll come home. I want to go to bed now. The jetlag sets in. Please,

tell the kids that I love ‘em.

Max: I’ll do. Good night. I love you, my darling.

Fran: I love you. Night.

The next days are hard for Elizabeth and Fran. Elizabeth avoids any

conversation with Fran and Fran doesn’t know how to get her talk to her. But

one night they’re meeting each other in the kitchen. Elizabeth enters....

Fran: Oh, Elizabeth, I didn’t heard you coming.

Elizabeth: What are you doing?

Fran: I wanted to have a little snack.

Elizabeth: I’m talking about my son. In former times, he called every week,

he came to my birthdays with the kids and now, it’s the opposite.

Fran: Why do you think it’s my fault?

Elizabeth: It all started when you came into his life.

Fran: I’m sorry but you have no idea. Maybe I’m not that what you wished him

to get but he’s happy. The kids are happy. Isn’t that the most important?

Elizabeth: Kitten, I’m worried about his reputation. The people talk about

how he could have married someone who isn’t his status.

Fran: No, they talk about his good character. He’s not as superficial as his

mother. Be honest, you ain’t worried about his reputation, you’re worried

about yours. You never cared for him or the kids.

Elizabeth: That’s not true! I always cared for my family.

Fran: Come on, you don’t even know what a family is. You sent Max away to

boarding school at the age of four. Afterwards you hired a nanny for caring

for him. Family, no, you don’t nothing about those things.

Elizabeth: Who do you think you are? I know those family things. I’ve always

been there for my family.

Fran: Where have you been at their birthdays? Where have you been when Max

got mugged? Where have you been at our wedding? Where have you been when

Maggie got married?

Fact is, the kids hardly know you. The twins haven’t even met you.

Elizabeth: Who do you think you are? I had my reasons for not being there.

Fran: Yeah, I know. Elizabeth, I know you abhors me. Fact is, I don’t care.

You know, I’d never could get along with someone who is more interested in

her social status that in her family.

Elizabeth: Fine, I couldn’t get along with someone who marries someone just

because she's keen on his money.

Fran: I married Max because I love him and the kids. I know, that’s

something you don’t know a shit about: Caring for other people, get to know

the character instead of the status of someone. Max always thought you’d

change your mind but I see, you’ll never change. (a minute of silence) I’m

flying back, tomorrow.

Elizabeth: Finally! Just by the way, you’re not invited for the wedding.

Fran: Fine, I don’t wanna come anymore.

She leaves the kitchen and calls the airport for booking the next flight

back to the US.

Twelve hours later in L.A.....She enters the mansion but nobody’s there. She

calls Sylvia for telling her that she’s back. Sylvia tells her that Max and

the kids are on the beach for a picnic... The jetlag sets in and Fran

decides to take a bath before going to bed....

In the late evening, she gets woken up by Jonah who storms in the bedroom...

Jonah: Mommy, mommy!

Fran: Hi, my darling child. Come here and gimme a hug. (she pulls him on the

bed) How was your picnic. Did you have fun?

Jonah: It was funny. Daddy played soccer with us.

Fran: That sounds wonderful. Where is daddy anyway?

Jonah: He brings Eve and Gracie into bed.

Fran: That means you have to go to bed, too, young man.

Jonah: I just wanted to look if you are already at home.

Fran: That’s sweet, but now, go to bed. We talk tomorrow, okay? I love you,

baby.

Jonah: Night, mommy! (storms out of the room into his bed)

Fran closes her eyes again and falls asleep again. Some minutes later,

Maxwell enters the bedroom.... He gets a seat on the bed....

Max: Welcome home, Fran. You’re earlier than planned. What happened?

Fran: Oh, hi, sweetie. (she gives him a kiss) It’s good to be home, again.

Well, I had a horrible fight with your mother. I’m not welcomed anymore.

Max: What? Why?

Fran: I told her the true things of family life. I told her that I know what

she had said to you on the phone and I told her that she shouldn’t try to

punish you or the kids for hating me or I’ll come to her and forget myself.

It’s just a never-ending battle.

Max: I’m sorry, you had so much trouble. I’ll call mother in the morning and

tell her that we’ll not come if you’re not allowed to come.

Fran: Oh, sweetie, I love you. Jonah had a lot of fun. He said you played

soccer with him and the girls.

Max: Yes, it was funny. But they missed their mommy. And I missed you much

more. What about a picnic tomorrow?

Fran: That would be wonderful. I’m so very angry with your mother. Who does

she think she is?

Max: I know it’s hard for you but just forget it. I think, she’ll never

change her mind.

Fran: I’m so very tired of it all. Why can’t she accept that I just want to

be a good mom to our kids?

Max: Come here. (he lays his arms around her while she leans on his chest)

It’s late already. Don’t be angry anymore... Just relax and close your

eyes... If my mother doesn’t want it the other way she has to learn to live

without us... (he looks down to Fran and recognizes that she fell asleep)
