Fran Sheffield woke up after a restful night’s sleep. She looked at her husband, Maxwell, sleeping peacefully next to her. It was just a normal, average day in Beverly Hills. She decided to go and check on her children, Eve and Jonah. They were sound asleep in their cribs. She also checked on her husband’s daughter, Gracie. She was also asleep. Seeing that she was the only one up, she decided to go back to sleep herself. Just then she heard someone banging on the door. Since no one else was awake, she went to go check to see whom it was. “Give me all your money”, the man at the door said. “Excuse me Mr., but this is not a bank. It’s not like I got a case load of money I could give to you, although…” Before Fran could utter another word the mysterious man at the door pulled out a 45mm. handgun. “I said give me your money!” “Ok, wait right here.”
The man continued to follow Fran up the stairs. “I told you to wait downstairs”, Fran said in a shaky voice. “I want to make sure you don’t go anywhere!” the strange man yelled in her face. Fran went into her bedroom to tell Maxwell about the stranger. “My money’s in this room.” Fran said to the man. “Just wait out here.” After closing her bedroom door, she ran to her sleeping husband. “Maxwell, we’re being held up!!” “Yea, Niles will help you with that, darling.” Fran began to shake her husband who was still half asleep. “No seriously there is a man outside our door that’s trying to hold us up.” “ What, OH MY GOD!” Maxwell quickly grabbed the lamp beside his bed. “Alright you scum, get out of my house before I kill you!” At that exact moment, the stranger burst open the bedroom door and began to shoot at the couple. “I told you just to get the money, bitch!!” the robber yelled as he continued to shoot. Throughout the beginning of the shooting Maxwell protected his wife by deflecting the bullets with the lamp he held in his hands. Since his shots were unsuccessful the stranger began to move closer and closer toward his victims. “Max, I’m scared!” Fran screamed. “Don’t worry darling, I’ll protect you! OWWWWWWWWWWWW OH GOD!” Max screamed as he fell to the floor. The stranger finally succeeded. Maxwell had been shot in the leg. “Now, its your turn.” he said looking at Fran. “Please, don’t hurt me.” she pleaded with the robber. “Sorry, baby, should’ve listened to me before!” “Please, stop! OWWWWWWWWWWW!” The robber shot her in the stomach.
As the couple screamed and bled the stranger proceeded to ransack their room. Just then, Gracie awoke. “What’s that noise?” she thought to herself. She decided to go and investigate. Once the thief heard Gracie’s footsteps he took everything he had stolen so far and jumped out the window. As she looked into her parents’ bedroom she saw her father and Fran writhing in pain on the floor. “OH MY GOD!” she yelled. “What happened in here?” “Gracie just call an ambulance, please!” begged Fran. Gracie flew to the phone and began to call 9-1-1. “Hello,” she said to the person on the other end of the phone, “My name is Grace Sheffield and my parents have just been shot.”
The ambulance, accompanied by a police car, arrived almost immediately. They burst through the front door and ran upstairs to Max and Fran’s bedroom. The paramedics started tending to Fran and Max, while the police dragged Gracie out of the room. “Come with us,” said one of the police officers, “We need ask you a few questions.” They took Gracie into her bedroom and locked the door behind them. “First of all are there any other people in the house besides you and your parents?” “Well, my brother and sister are in the room down the hall.” “ Now, where were you when your parents were shot?” said the other police officer. “I was in my room sleeping.” Gracie responded. “I see, now do you have any inkling as to who shot your parents?” “No, no I don’t. But it wasn’t me if that’s what your thinking. I love my father and Fran and would never do anything to harm them!” “Still, we’re going to need to take you in to custody.” “But, I didn’t do anything!!” The second police officer began placing handcuffs on her. “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law…” As her parents we’re being taken away in the ambulance, Grace Sheffield was being escorted to the police car parked outside. “We’re going to need back-up here at the Sheffield place,” said the first police officer into his walkie-talkie as they approached the car. “The mother and father were shot and there seems to be no presence of a gun. There are still people in the house. We’re going to need you guys to come and check the house out while we take the kid to the station for more questioning.”
As the car began to drive by the house they saw a man passed out in the driveway of another home. He had a trash bag filled with money and jewelry and had a gun lying next to him. All of a sudden the police car came to a halt. “Maybe I should go check this guy out. You stay here and watch the girl,” said the first police officer. “Yes, Jack.” Ten minutes later the police officer came back to the car. “Let the girl go, we’ve got our man right over there!”
Gracie was taken back to the house with a police escort. The man who robbed the Sheffield family was eventually sentenced to 15 years in prison. Both Max and Fran made it out of the ordeal alive, although Max would walk with a limp for the rest of his life. Also, because of that day whenever someone would knock on the door in the early morning hours, no one would open the door.
