In the morning.... Fran comes for breakfast..
Fran: Morning, everyone. So tell me, Mr. Sheffield, are you excited because
of the opening night on Friday?
Max: Yes, really. The production goes well and the critics seem to be on our
side.
Fran: Kids, you’re running late for school.
Maggie: You’re right. We have to go...
Fran goes with them to the front door...
Fran: Okay, Maggie, good luck for the Math test, Brighton, don’t torture
your teachers, and Gracie, have fun on your trip to the Empire State
Building. Bye, kids.
Kids: Bye, Fran!!!
Back at the breakfast table...
Max: Miss Fine, are you free on Friday night?
Fran: Yes... Why?
Max: I want you to look for the children while I’m at the opening night with
C.C..
Fran: You’re going with Miss Babcock?
Max: Yes, what did you think?
Fran: Nothing... (leaves the room)
Max: Niles, did I something wrong?
Niles: You know this woman for four years now and you really ask me if you
did something wrong?
Max: Do you think that Miss Fine wanted to go to the opening night?
Niles: Boy, you got it. By the way, you’d be more impressive on the critics
with having a young, elegant woman on your side instead of that old witch.
Max: Niles, you’re talking about C.C.
Niles: So?
Max: This is business and not a personal event.
Niles: Think about it, Sir.
In the afternoon.......
Maggie: (enters) Hi Fran!
Fran: Hi Maggie. How was your test?
Maggie: I think it was okay. Do you know where Dad is?
Fran: He’s at the theater. Maybe I can help you...
Maggie: I want to spend the weekend with my friends in Atlantic City.
Fran: Oy. I don’t think he’d allow you this. You know your father, don’t ya?
Maggie: Yes, but you’ll help me...right? (smiles at her)
Fran: Maggie, I don’t think this is a good idea. I mean, alone in Atlantic
City? How do you wanna get there?
Maggie: Andrea will drive us. She has her driver’s license for three years
now. Please, Fran. Help me convincing Daddy. Remember when you’ve been in my
age...
Fran: Okay. But I tell ya, this is not gonna be an easy thing. The best
would be if we go to the theater for asking him.
Maggie: Why don’t calling him on the cell phone?
Fran: If you’re standing towards him and look him straight into his eyes, it
would be harder for him to say no... Got it?
Maggie: You’re great.
Fran: Okay, let’s go...
At the theater....
Fran: [to dancer] Excuse me, do you know where Mr. Sheffield is?
Dancer: He went away for business things. You must be the new leading
actress. You’re really made for show business.
Fran: Oh, thank you. But have to disappoint ya. I’m just the nanny.
Meanwhile, near the stage....
Joey: Hi.
Maggie: Hi.
Joey: Sheffield’s daughter, right?
Maggie: Where do you know?
Joey: Saw the pics in his office. You’re more beautiful personal than on the
photos.
Maggie: Thank you.
He touches her butt...
Maggie: Stop that!
Joey: C’mon, baby. I know you like this.
Maggie: Wrong, I don’t like that.
Fran’s still talking to the dancer when she hears Maggie scream...
Maggie: I said, leave your hands of me!!!
Fran: (comes over) Maggie, what happened?
Maggie: This guy touched me although I told him to stop this.
Joey: [to Maggie] Hey, baby, don’t act like that. I know you’re keen on me.
Fran: Hey, you little bastard, she told you to stop this. Leave your hands
of her.
Joey: Who are you? Who allowed you to call me a bastard?
Fran: First, I’m the nanny of this girl and I’m allowed to do because I’m in
charge of her and if such a little bastard as you touches her, something
very bad will happen to you!
Joey: You’re threatening me? I’m really shakin’! But maybe you’re just
jealous. Maybe I should touch you....?
Fran: Do it and you’’ll get hurt.
Joey: Oh, baby, you’re such a turn on. (touches her)
Fran: I warned you.
She boxes his ears and kicks him in his stomach. He goes down on his knees
and can’t move himself anymore.
Maggie: Fran, you knocked him K.O.
Fran: I know.
Dancer: Someone shall call an ambulance!
Maggie: [to Fran] You were great. Where did you learned that?
Fran: Honey, I’m from Flushing. It’s the first thing you get taught in
school. Are you okay?
Maggie: Yes, thank you. I was so afraid when he touched me.
Fran: (hugs her) It’s okay to be afraid. Come on, we go home.
Minutes later an ambulance arrived at the exit of the theater and Joey gets
rolled along Fran and Maggie.
Joey: [to Fran] You’ll regret this. You’ll hear from my attorney.
Fran: I’m really looking forward to it...
They don’t care any longer and go home...
In the evening.... Maggie enters Maxwell’s office..
Maggie: Hi Daddy.
Max: Hello sweetheart. Can I help you?
Maggie: I thought you’d like to have some ice cream...
Max: Oh, thanks. (she smiles at him) Okay, what do you want?
Maggie: Why do you think I want something from you?
Max: Margaret! Please, I’m very busy. Just tell me.
Maggie: Okay. Daddy, can I go to Atlantic City for the weekend? We are a
group of five. Andrea is the driver and has her license since three years
without any accidents.
Max: I don’t know. Without any adults?
Maggie: Yes.
Max: No!
Maggie: What? But Daddy, I....
Max: No. You’re too young.
Maggie: I’m seventeen years old.
Max: You got it. Margaret, no.
Maggie: Why do you always say no, when I want to go away with my friends?
Max: I just say no when you want to leave for spending the whole weekend in
another city. Now, go to your room!
Maggie: You’re so mean! (storms out)
Fran enters...
Fran: Why are you all screaming here? What happened?
Max: Maggie wants to spend the weekend in Atlantic City. I said no and now,
she hates me for that.
Fran: She already told me. Well, on the one hand I can understand her.
Max: What?
Fran: Mister Sheffield, she’s young. She doesn’t want to waste her youth in
this house. You know, when I’ve been in her age I often spend the weekend
away from home. I got more self-confidence and I wasn’t that dependent from
my parents any longer.
Max: Miss Fine, Margaret is my daughter and I’ll not allow her to spend the
weekend away from home. Now, I don’t want to discuss this any longer. So,
why did you came?
Fran: Oh, I just came to say "Hello" and because of your fight with Maggie.
Max: Good night, Miss Fine.
Fran: All right already, I’m going.
Two days later, in the afternoon... Fran’s sitting in the kitchen with the
kids and Niles. Suddenly they hear Maxwell yelling through the Intercom....
Max: Miss Fine, in my office, right now!!!!!
Fran enters the office...
Fran: You yelled, Mister Sheffield?
Max: Close the door! You know, I got a call from my attorney.
Fran: Oy. Why?
Max: Well, he told me a story about an actor who got knocked out by a
special nanny.
Fran: Who could have been that?
Max: MISS FINE!!!
Fran: All right, all right. You know, he really deserved.
Max: He’s in the hospital with a broken rip and a blue eye.
Fran: So?
Max: So? I’ll tell you, the opening night is tomorrow and I have no leading
actor. Now, I shall go in front of the audience and tell it our play can’t
take place?
Fran: Mister Sheffield, I’m so very sorry but...
Max: Being sorry isn’t enough. That’s it. This time, you’re gone too far.
Fran: Mister Sheffield, I...
Max: I don’t want to hear anything, you’re fired.
Fran: Fired?
Max: Yes!
Fran: But that guy touched...
Max: I don’t want to hear anything! Pack your things and OUT!!!
Fran: [looks straight into his eyes; nearly crying] Fine....
Fran storms out of the office up into her room for packing her things...
The kids and Niles who heard everything through the Intercom enter...
They all sit on the bed...
Maggie: Oh, Fran, I’m so very sorry. This wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t
wanted you to go with me into the theater.
Fran: Don’t blame yourself. It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have had that
overreaction.
Maggie: You protected me and yourself of that bastard. You’ve done the
right.
Fran: I thought, I would have done the right but your father has another
point of view.
Maggie: But he wasn’t listening to you. If he would have, he’d know you’ve
done the right.
Fran: Maybe...
Grace: Do you really have to leave?
Fran: Oh, angel, c’mere. (takes her into her arms) You heard what your
father said. I have to go, but don’t worry, we’ll see us as much as
possible.
Grace: Promised?
Fran: Promised, baby. I’ll rent an apartment and you can come whenever you
want to come. We’ll find a way.
Brighton: I don’t want you to leave, we all don’t want you to leave.
Fran: (tears come into her eyes) I also don’t wanna leave but I have to....
Niles: Come on, kids. We’ll give Miss Fine some privacy while she packs her
things.
Fran: [whispering to Niles] Thank you.
Niles hugs her, then the four leave Fran alone... Two hours later she comes
down the steps, in her hands her bags, in her face the tears...
Niles: Oh, Miss Fine, let me take this. [takes her bags] Mister Sheffield
ordered a cab for you.
Fran: He’d pay every price for getting me out of the house, eh?
Niles: Miss Fine... I hope he’ll regret the worst mistake he ever made.
Fran: You’re sweet. I’m really gonna miss ya, Niles. You became a very good
friend.
Niles: If you need something, just call.
Fran: (hugs him for a long time; he gives her a tissue) Thanks for
everything.
Maggie: Oh, Fran. I’m gonna miss you. Please, don’t forget us.
Fran: How could I, you’re like my own kids. I love you, sweetie. If you need
some advice or have trouble with your father...I’m there for you.
Grace: Fran, es tut mir vai seeing you leave.
Fran: Oh, Gracie, ... [to Niles] That’s the Jewish heritage. [to Grace] Come
here, baby. (hugs her, Gracie cries) Oh, angel, just let it out.
Shhhh...(she passes her hand over Gracie’s back to calm her down)
Grace: Can’t I come with you?
Fran: No, baby, I’m sorry. (she cleans Gracie’s face from the tears) I love
you. [to Brighton] Please, be nice to your sisters. Don’t play any games
with them. You are a family.
Brighton: Okay, Fran. I’ve got a picture from our family for you so that you
think of us whenever you are sad or anything else.
Fran: That’s sweet and I’ll think a lot of you even without the pics. I love
you, B.
Brighton: I love you, too, Fran. You’ve ever been like a real mom to us.
Niles: I’m sorry, but the cab’s waiting.
Fran: Sure,... bye kids, bye Niles. I’ll miss ya. (they give each other a
huge hug)
All: Bye...
Fran leaves the house. Before going into the cab she turns around and sees
how Gracie wants to break away from Maggie’s arms for running into Fran’s...
She can’t hold back the tears, throws her bags into the cab, asks the driver
to wait some more seconds, goes back to the door and hugs Gracie who can’t
calm down for a long time....
The next days are hard for Fran, Niles, and the kids. The kids ain’t talking
to Max and even Niles speaks hardly a word with him....
In the office....
Max: Niles, did the nanny-agency send someone new?
Niles: I decided to care for the kids by myself, Sir.
Max: And who gave you the right to do that?
Niles: The kids, Sir. They don’t want a new nanny.
C.C.: Boy, Niles, first the duster, now the dust cleaning nanny. What a
raise...
He just looks at her and leaves the room and goes into the living room where
the kids are sitting on the couch, looking at pics of their Caribbean Cruise
with Fran.
Niles: You have to go to bed, kids.
Grace: We can’t sleep.
Niles: I know, but please try it. I know, it’s very hard for you. I miss
her, too. Now, go upstairs, I’ll make some hot milk for you and bring it
into your rooms, okay?
Brighton: Why doesn’t Dad ask her to come back? Isn’t he missing Fran?
Maggie: Enough! I’ll go and tell him the whole story. He wasn’t listening to
Fran but he’ll listen to me. (she runs into Max’ office)
Dad, we have to talk!
C.C.: Don’t you have to sleep already?
Maggie: Shut up, old witch!
C.C.: What?
Max: Margaret, you’ll apologize to her, right now, or ...
Maggie: No! Dad, listen. You don’t know the whole story of what have
happened in the theater. You don’t know the reason why Fran did that. You
didn’t listen to her but you’ll listen to me!
Max: There’s nothing that could make up for something like this. Don’t try
to cover for her. She’s gone too far.
Maggie: Dad, Fran protected me... and herself from that bastard.
Max: What?
Maggie: The guy touched me on my butt. I told him to stop but he didn’t and
then Fran came and helped me. Then, he stopped touching me but started
touching her though she beat him.
Max: Is this really the way it happened?
Maggie: I swear! (they leave the office and go into the living room)
Max: I can’t believe it. Why didn’t she told me?
Maggie: Maybe because you didn’t listen to her?
Max: Oh, my god. I have to find Miss Fine to get her back. Niles, do you
have any idea where she is?
Niles: She has a little apartment in Queens. She didn’t want to move in to
her parents, again if the kids need her. I’ll drive you to her.
Maggie: We’ll come with you!
At Fran’s apartment....A knock...
Fran: I’m coming! (opens the door) Kids, what are you doing here? It’s very
late already! Come in. (hugs every of them) Does your father know where you
are? (when she wants to close the door, Niles and Max are standing in front
of her) Hi Niles, how are you? Come in.
Max: May I enter, too?
Fran: Go to hell!
Max: [enters] Miss Fine, I...[to the others]
Niles: Come on kids, we go into the kitchen.
Max: Miss Fine, I’m sorry for what have happened. Maggie told me the whole
story and I want to apologize for not listening to you...
Fran: Maybe I overreacted but if it’s about the kids I’d kill to protect
them. After all those years you really should know me better.
Max: I know, I realized this first after Maggie told me the story.... I want
you to come back. I can’t even look into the kids’ face anymore. They don’t
talk, they don’t eat and the worst of all they don’t laugh anymore. It’s so
very quite in the house.
Fran: Mister Sheffield, I’m thankful that you tell me all this. Do you wanna
make me feel guilty? I mean, it sounds as if you think it’s still all my
fault.
Max: Miss Fine, you know that this isn’t true. I told you that I’m sorry so
why are you still angry?
Fran: Do you have any idea how hard it has been for me leaving the persons I
love about everything? I’ve never thought you would hurt me so very much.
Why do you think do your apologies would make up for that?
Max: Well, do you have any idea what it’s like seeing the kids in that mood
when it’s all my fault? I fired the person who’d been like a mother to them.
And in Grace’s case a mother she never had. Please, come back. They can’t
live without you any longer, they need you... I need you.
Fran: Mister Sheffield, you’re right. I don’t want the kids to be unhappy. I
come back, under these conditions: That guy has to apologize to Maggie and
you’ll don’t work at the weekends anymore because you’ll spend more time
with your children. Clear?
Max: Okay. Welcome back, Miss Fine.
Fran: Thank you, Mister Sheffield. (they give each other a hug)
Max: Come on kids, we go home.
Maggie: We heard everything. Good to have you back.
Fran: Thanks, Maggie. (after hugging her, B. and Niles) Wait, there’s
someone missing...Where is Gracie?
Niles: I’ll show you. Follow me!
They go into Fran’s bedroom where Grace’s sleeping peacefully....
Max: [whispering] I’ll carry her down into the limousine.
Fran: [whispering] No, that would wake her up. She can stay here, tonight. I
’ll bring her in the morning when I’m coming to work.
Brighton: Will you move in again?
Maggie: Please!
Max: Yes, move back.
Fran: All right, I haven’t packed out everything, yet though packing
wouldn't last long.
Max: Okay, we gotta go. (at the door) Thank you for forgiving me. I know I
hurt your feelings. Please give me a chance to make everything good, again.
Fran: I will. Now, go home. Maggie and Brighton are very tired.
She smiles at him and closes the door. After packing some few things she
goes into the bedroom for sleeping. She lies next to Gracie...
Grace: Are you coming back?
Fran: Yes, baby, I am.
The End
