Through His Eyes

by

A Beautiful Storm

Maxwell woke with a start when he hears the knock on the door. He had dozed off again. Ever since....ever since Sara, Max had had little tolerance for anything, least of all his kids. So, he had withdrawn from his family and friends, and buried himself in work and brandy. It must be C.C., he told himself, and I am not in the mood to deal with another argument. Little did he know, that knock on the door would change his life.

"Sir, the nanny agency has sent us another nanny." Niles said, peeking in through a crack in the door. Ever since Sara had passed on, his employer had denied any companionship. So instead of their normal chats, Niles realized it was all strictly business.

"Yes, yes, of course Niles. I don't have time for this. What's your opinion on this one?" Maxwell replied listlessly. Niles had to restrain himself from smacking his employer across the face. They were his children! He should care.

"My opinion on this one, sir, is that you should certainly meet her. She seems like a wonderful young woman, I think you would like her." Niles said, mocking the word ‘sir’. How Maxwell became the renowned Broadway producer, and he became a subservient slave, he’d never know. Maxwell rolled his eyes.

"Alright Niles. I’ll be right out." Maxwell replied, taking off his glasses, and dismissing the butler with a wave of his hand. Max spent extra time meandering through the office. He really didn’t want to socialize with this aforementioned ‘wonderful young woman that he would like’. He knew Niles was wise in his own way, but he was just so confusing at times. Why was this nanny so special? As he stepped out into the living area, he thought his heart stopped.

Standing next to the door was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her hair was of the darkest auburn imaginable, and her eyes matched. Ah, her eyes. They were beautiful, shining with an unfathomable intensity. And that body! He sighed, how could he be thinking this about a stranger!? Another woman was bad enough, but a stranger? But he couldn’t ignore his reaction. As he neared her he felt his palms begin to sweat, and his knees were weak.

After Miss Fine was hired, and had left to retrieve her stuff, Maxwell sat in his office reflecting. Miss Fine was definitely beautiful. And witty. Not to mention charming, funny, intelligent, and—oh god, what was he thinking? Miss Fine was the help! Not his Cinderella, this isn’t a fairy tale! Slamming his pencil down on the table, he began to pace the office.

Sara was his love, his only true match. There was no one else for him. And even if there was, it could never be a nanny! And he never would—or could have—for that matter, have fallen for her so quickly.

But she did love the children. And they seemed to already adore her. Niles and Miss Fine seemed to be instant friends, and C.C., well; at least his family adored her. At least HE—he what? What did he think of Miss Fine? She certainly was an original young woman, maybe a bit unorthodox, but she had a good heart.

Maxwell walked out into the living room, and sat down with Niles and the children, to watch some TV. Something he hadn’t done in a long while. Putting his hand around Margaret’s shoulder—watching her stunned reaction, made him realize what he had been missing. Maybe he should just let things progress naturally.
