Normally Fran was up an hour before everybody else. She had make up to do. She had to look good for everybody. But not today. She had finally given up. She couldn't take it any more. How could she be around the man she loved all day, knowing that it would take forever for him to love her? But how could she leave the family she loved and was practically everything to her? This was an impossible situation. She was so depressed. What was she going do? Maxwell and the kids were already up.
She wished she didn't love him so much. That she didn't come here in the first place. Then she wouldn't have this horrible problem. She just wanted to crawl in a corner and hide from all these problems.
Maxwell came to her door to see if she was all right. He was a little worried because she didn't show up for breakfast that morning. Maybe it had to do something with him. Why did he hurt her so much? He didn't know what to feel. He was sure that felt something. But it couldn't be love. Love was a once in a lifetime thing that he had felt for Sarah. He felt like he was betraying his late wife. But he couldn't deny what he felt. He did love her. And he was hurting her. But he was afraid to get hurt. What if she didn't really love him? What if he would lose her? And he wasn't sure if he did really love her. There were just many doubts. He couldn't do it.
She made up an excuse to get him away. But he could hear the tears in her voice. He wondered why. But he knew. He knew she finally had enough. He left guiltily for his office.
Fran wondered why everything had to be so complicated. Why wasn't she happily married with kids? Why did the only man she loved had to be afraid of love?
Niles came up to check up on her. He wondered why she didn't come down for breakfast. When he saw Maxwell's sad face when he came back down stairs, he became truly worried. Maybe Maxwell and Fran had a fight. He had to know. He went up stairs and knocked on Fran's door. First he heard nothing, but when he knocked again he heard a muffled 'come in'. He went in and was a little taken back by what he saw. She had been crying. There was something very wrong, he could see it her eyes.
"Miss Fine, what's wrong? You don't look all right." He said while he closed the door behind him.
"I don't know Niles, I just don't know. I love him so much. But it hurts. And then I wanna leave. But I can't. 'Cause I love you all. But I can't take it anymore. Why won't he love me? Is he to good for me? Is he afraid I will go after his money?" She put her arms around him and started to sob on his shoulder. He felt sorry for her. He could feel her hurt. He cursed his boss for hurting this beautiful woman so much. Couldn't he see her love? He knew that Maxwell loved her too. Why was it so hard for him to admit something that the whole household all ready knew? He shook his head.
"There, there Miss Fine. I'll go down stairs and talk to him. I can't take it to see you suffer like this. Now will you please go and get dressed?" He forced a smile and she smiled too. Niles left to find Maxwell. He was really pissed at him. Niles always respected his feelings. But he loved like a sister, and he wouldn't let her get hurt anymore. Even if meant losing his job.
Niles went to Maxwell's office. He entered and found a very disturbed Maxwell. Maxwell had been fighting with his feelings all morning. He didn't want to get hurt again. But he knew he would get hurt when she left. What was he supposed to do? He looked up to see Niles. A Niles he had never seen before. He looked real angry. Even a bit hurt.
"Yes Niles." He said carefully.
"I don't know what you did or didn't do to Miss Fine, but I do know that she's a nervous wreck. You are the boss and she's the nanny, but I can't take it to see her this hurt. Why can't you just tell her what everybody already knows? That you love her. She wants to leave us, did you know that? But she won't 'cause she loves us too much and we're practically all she has. She's really a good girl. And if you continue to hurt her, I will quit and I will take her to a better place. She doesn't deserve this. Maybe people will think that you're to good for her, but I think she's to good for you. I know that if she didn't love you this much she would have left after the first time you hurt her. Now if you please excuse me, I have shopping to do." Niles left. Maxwell had never seen Niles this way. He knew the kids loved her, but Niles loved her too. And he loved her too. He couldn't hide it anymore. Look at what he did to the people around him. He just had to tell her. But what if she wouldn't take it anymore? What if she turned him away? Enough of these doubts. It was now or never. He would march himself right upstairs to ask her if she please would please take him back. He left to go up stairs.
Fran slowly got dressed after Niles left. She didn't want him to go to Maxwell, but she didn't have the strength to stop him. Maybe Niles would knock some sense into that thick British head of him. Niles seemed real angry at him. He was almost like a real brother. He really wanted them to get together. She heard a knock on the door. She half hoped it was Maxwell, but she didn't want to see him. He would make up an excuse and everything would go back to normal. But it couldn't go back to normal. She opened the door a little but immediately slammed it shut when she saw Maxwell.
"Fran, please listen to me." She wouldn't listen to his excuses anymore.
"No, I will not listen anymore. Now please leave me alone with my thoughts. Maybe later." Maxwell got sad and left for his office. It seemed that she didn't want to be around him anymore. And he didn't blame her. But he wouldn't let her turn him away this easily. He just needed one more chance. He knew what he had to do. But he had to get her to listen to him. Maybe a letter would do the trick. He sat down to write his letter.
Please read this letter. After that you can do what you want, but please give me a chance. First I want to apologize. I'm so sorry for everything I've done to you. If you weren't such a good person, you would have left after the first time I hurt you. But you didn't and I thank you for that. And I know it seems just like another excuse, but I was afraid. What if you would leave after I admitted that I love you? I can not take that pain again. But if you would leave and I didn't tell you how I feel, I'd feel so guilty. Because I love you. And I know it was wrong to deny something so right. You must never think that I don't love you because people think you're not good enough for me. Nothing is too good for you. I'm not good enough for you. I don't deserve you. You were the one who made me a human again. You were the one who made the kids kids again. You are the most wonderful person on the face of earth. So will you please give me a chance to prove myself to you? I promise I'll never hurt you again. I'm going to sit outside your room and wait for your answer.
Love Always,Fran heard another knock on the door. She wanted to ignore it, when she saw an envelope coming under door. She heard a very silent 'I love you'. She took the letter and opened it. When she saw whom it was from she wanted to throw it away but she started to read it. She had tears in her eyes. Not from sadness but from happiness. He finally wrote it. He admitted it. Finally. She quietly stood up and opened the door. He kept his promise. He sat against the wall besides her room.
Maxwell waited outside her room. It seemed like an hour but it was only a few minutes. When he heard the door open he looked up into a smiling face. He stood.
"So what's your answer?" He carefully asked.
"Yes, I will give you another chance. But I'm not going to forget everything. You have try hard." She took his hand and led him into her room. They sat and talked all evening. They decided to start dating. Fran was still afraid that he didn't want it. But everything was going to be all right.
The End
