Maxwell was sitting in his office distressed. His hair was a mess, and his eyes were red and swollen, obviously from crying. In his hand, tightly clutched was Fran’s engagement ring.

"Hey dad, where’s Fran?" Brighton said as he entered his father’s office, along with his two sisters. They were use to their nanny meeting them at the door when they arrived home from school. The phone rang and Maxwell picked it up.

"Hello," he said quickly. He was wishing it was Fran. He said hello again, but there wasn’t an answer. "Must have been the wrong number," he said aloud and hung up the phone.

"So where’s Fran?" Maggie said.

"She stepped out a while and will be back soon," he said, not telling the truth. He was praying that Fran would be back soon. He didn’t want the kids to know the truth and didn’t want them to be hurt. They might have possibly lost another mother.

"Daddy, you don’t look so good," Grace said.

"I’m fine," he said, even though he wasn’t.

The kids left and C.C. entered. She noticed how horrible Maxwell looked. Earlier he had told her what happened. She understood what he was going through, since she felt the same way.

"C.C., what am I going to do? Niles and I have this wonderful evening planned for tonight. He’ll be back shortly with the plans underway and Fran’s not here."

"How am I suppose to know. She’s the one whose trying to get Niles and I back together… did you say Niles is coming back?"

The phone rang again. Maxwell picked it up, but again, there was no answer.

"Why did I have to pause? I could have told her an infinite number of reasons why I love her. I’m going to get a drink."

The Fine’s Apartment

"Who do you keep calling and hanging up on?" Sylvia said.

"No one, Ma," said Fran.

"Why are you here anyway?" Sylvia said. Fran didn’t know what to tell her mother. Usually she would open up to her mother, but this time was different. She knew that her mother wouldn’t understand her reason for leaving Maxwell. She kept her left hand hidden from sight.

"I just came to visit you," she said quickly. She picked up the phone and dialed the Sheffield home again, when her mother left the room. She was calling C.C., not Maxwell. Fran didn’t want to talk to him at all. He had truly hurt her.

"Hello," C.C said.

"Good you answered the phone," Fran said.

"Nanny Fine?"

"Yeah."

"Oh my God, Maxwell is worried about you. He looks terrible. Where are you?"

"He is… I’m at Ma’s, don’t tell him where I am."

"Okay I won’t… Niles is coming back tonight."

"He is? I would come over there but I don’t want to see Maxwell. I have to rework my plan of getting you two back together. We’ll have to meet somewhere else."

"Maxwell won’t be here, he’s taking the children out at seven."

"Okay, then I will come. I have to get my things anyway. Bye."

"Bye."

C.C. lied on purpose. She knew that Maxwell would be there. She also knew that Fran and Maxwell belong together just as she and Niles. She had a plan of her own to bring Fran and Maxwell back together.
