Fran walked down the stairs of Maxwell’s mansion. She sighed, thinking to herself. Someday, I’ll have something like this that’s mine. A man that’s mine. Children that are mine. She’d been working for this man for three years already. They flirted and played stupid games, and there was those few times when something took over them both and they kissed. She had to face the facts though, nothing was going to happen between them.
She reached the dining room and the kids’ faces all lit up. "Fran!" They were always happy to see her. Maxwell glanced over at her. "You look lovely this morning Miss Fine. Where’s that gaudy robe and matching slippers?" She glared over at him. "I’m going shopping with Val as soon as I’m done seeing the kids off to school." He frowned. Shopping with Val means going around picking up men that obviously are way to low for her. She should stay home with me, but how. "That’s a pity Miss Fine. I was hoping you could join me for lunch today while I’m on break at the theater."
Niles was in the kitchen, but he hears all. He gasped. Mr. Sheffield is finally asking her out. I knew it would happen sooner or later. He walked out into the dining room as Maxwell finished.
"You know, Just a quick ‘nosh’, is it, before I have to get back to work." Fran stood speechless. "Sure, a nosh. Sounds great, I’ll come by the theater at one." Niles was ecstatic. Finally. And I didn’t even have to push. Maxwell grinned. "Val won’t be too crushed, will she Miss Fine?"
"Val? Oh right. No, I’ll just call her and tell her something came up." Fran sat down and stared at her food. She wasn’t hungry for some reason now. She began to daydream about what they would do. Maybe a walk in the park, we’ll eat somewhere nice, of coarse. Ah, I can’t believe it finally happened. I wish it wasn’t such a dreary day or I’d make a picnic. I’ve never cooked for him before. I wonder if he knows I can cook? I...
Maxwell interrupted her thought. "Miss Fine..?" He had said her name multiple times. "Are you okay to go? You seem a little off." Niles grinned. Duh.. "Huh, I’m fine. I’ll see you at one."
She left the table and ran up the stairs to her room. She picked up her phone and called Val. Val sleepily pick up the phone.
"Val, Val! Mr. Sheffield asked me out. We are going to lunch. Can you believe it? I know, I know, three long years, but hell, it finally happened. Yeah, we’ll go shopping Saturday, promise."
She floated around her room for hours trying to pick out the perfect outfit. After an hour, she finally had it. The next two hours were spent on her hair. She did it up like normal, but today, it just seemed to take longer since she wanted to look perfect.
Noon finally rolled around. Niles had been thinking on it all day. He remembered what had happened last Valentines day with that stupid card. Fran walked down the stairs gracefully.
"Lovely, as always, Miss Fine, but, may I talk to you, as a friend?" She looked a little worried. "Of coarse Niles, any time." He hesitated. "Just be careful Miss Fine. You know how he can be." "I know Niles. I’m ready."
The entire world probably knew how Maxwell was with his feelings. He would think he was being funny, but it would be downright mean.
"I just didn’t want you to be hurt Miss Fine." "Thanks Niles, You’re a good friend."
She left for the theater her thoughts were a mess now. He probably will just do something heartless and hurt me.. Again. I hate how he does that. He pretends like he wants to commit, but it’s like he changes his mind. Oh well, I’ll go and have a good time anyway. We’ll let it roll and see what happens.
Fran got out of her car and saw Maxwell waiting for her by the door to the theater. He was holding flowers. She walked up to him and he didn’t look happy.
"What’s wrong Mr. Sheffield?" He handed her the flowers. "We’ll talk at the restaurant."
They pulled up to a fancy restaurant and got out of the limo. He escorted her in and held doors like a gentlemen. He pulled her chair out and she sat down. Neither of them had said a word since they got into the limo. Fran looked very worried.
"What’s going on Mr. Sheffield?"
He looked into her eyes, he still had an upset look on his face. "Fran, I’m really sorry to do this to you, but my children, they’re really getting to old for a nanny." Fran gasped and Max choked on his words. This was too, mean even for his standards. She sighed. "I understand." She began to stand up. "Fran, we all love you very much, and I would be very happy if you would marry me." Her heart skipped a few beats and she sat back down. Tears began to roll out of her eyes. "Of course I’ll marry you Mr. Sheffield." "I have a first name, darling." She laughed. He’s a mean one, but I love him. Romance is overrated anyway, I guess.
The End
So, this was short, I think. It was my first time writing something like this. Obviously the characters are copyrighted and all that good stuff. I really would like some comments on my writing so I can see if I should try this again. My email is Baywonderhorse@yahoo.com. I'm not easily offended, so anything is welcome, good or bad.
