Background story

Fran Fine, 29, single mother, was living in an apartment across from her

parents, Morty and Sylvia Fine. If it was not for her parents help and her

cousin Toddy, to a lot of people he is more known as Todd Oldham, Fran would

not be where she is. When Fran was 18 she moved in with her boyfriend Danny

Imperiali. After two years Danny proposed to Fran because she told him that

if they did not get engaged soon that she was moving out. Danny did not want

that so he asked. Go ahead another two years Fran and Danny finally set a

wedding date because Fran told Danny that if they did not get married that

it was over. Well one day Fran was not feeling herself so her best friend

Val took her to the doctors. The doctor gave Fran some wonderful news. She

was pregnant. So Val rushed Fran home so she could tell Danny. Well when

Fran and Val walked in they saw Danny on the sofa with Heather Biblow. Danny

told Fran he wanted to see other people and Heather needed a job and a place

to live.

Fran- Are you firing me and kicking me out?!?

Danny- Yeah!

Fran- You can’t fire me or kick me out, one thing I quit and I choose to

move out! NO! You fired me so I can collect unemployment!

Fran ran to their bedroom and Val ran after her to help her pack.

Val- Fran you know what I quit. I don’t want to work with the bimbo and that

shmegege.

Fran- Val you need this job and don’t quit because of me.

Val- You are my best friend.

Fran- I Know but I can easily find a new job, Cousin Toddy said he has one

waiting for me if I ever needed a new one. Plus it pays more and this money

will be more important to me now since there is a baby on the way.

Val- Are ya goin to tell Danny?

Fran- I can’t, he already hurt me, I don’t need to be hurt anymore. I saw

that because Danny won’t believe it is his anyways.

Val-That’s true!

Fran and Val finished packing went out to the living room where Danny and

Heather were making out. Fran gave them a dirty look and threw the

engagement ring and the apartment key right at the back of his head. Then

Fran called him a couple bad words and Heather and Danny gave her some looks

and then Fran and Val left.

Before Fran knew it her and Val were at Fran’s parents apartment. By this

time Fran was in tears. She rang the door bell and Sylvia opened the door

and took Fran into her arms.

Sylvia- Tell me what happen, but first you and Val come in here and sit

down.

A very upset Fran and an angry Val came in and sat on the plastic covered

sofa. Then Fran braced herself to tell her mother.

Sylvia- Alright Frannie tell me the whole story.

Fran- Alright Ma, first thing is first, I need a place to stay until I get

back on my feet.

Sylvia- Already done, you can stay her my Frannie.

Fran- Thank ya Ma. Okay here is the whole story, but if I break down crying

Val will finish the story for me.

Val-YEP!

Fran- MA! I’m pregnant!

Sylvia-WHA!!

Fran- You heard me I’m pregnant, and I don’t know how long but Danny has

been cheating on me with Heather Biblow, and he fired me too.

Sylvia-That SHMUCH!!! I’ll kill him! Oh my Frannie, it will be ok.

Fran is once again in tears because she just realized a lot of things.

Fran- How can everything be ok? MA, I am homeless, jobless, and I am going

to be a single mother.

Sylvia- Fran calm down. You are not homeless, you are staying with me and

Daddy until you find your own place. And Frannie...

Fran- Yeah Ma!

Sylvia- Lot of good women are single moms and you are going to be great at

it, and you never know Mr. Right can come along. Just hopefully he is a

doctor or a lawer.

Fran-MA!

Fran slapped her mom on the arm and smiled then they gave each other a big

huge. That night Morty went over to Danny’s and got the rest of Fran’s

stuff, since Fran dealt with him enough already.

So Fran moved in with her parents, and they helped her as much as possible.

They told her she could live with them until the baby was born and she did.

Then one day, after a couple days living with she parents, called her Cousin

Toddy and gave her a job as his associate

Seven months later Fran was a week over due with the baby. Then one night

while Fran was sleeping she had a contraction and before she knew it her

water broke and went into labor. She yelled for her parents and they were on

there way to the hospital. That night Fran had a little girl and named her

Sara Valerie Fine.

Present time

Now Fran almost in her thirties is very happy of herself. She has her own

place that her and Sara have been living for the past 6 years. She could not

ask for a better job. Todd took her under his wing and now she helps him

design his cloths. As for Sara, Fran could not be happier of being her

mother. Sara looks exactly like her when Fran was her age. Sara is very

smart and just started kindergarten. Sara also has a comic side to her just

like Fran. Fran and Sara have a really close relationship and are best

friends. But one thing Fran wish could come true is to give Sara a father

but nobody has worked out for the two of them. But Fran knows deep down Mr.

Right is still out there and there is no way she is letting Danny be part of

Sara’s life.

SCENE- Fran’s apartment. Fran is getting ready for work while Sara is eating

her breakfast before Sylvia comes over and takes Sara to school.

Bathroom-where Fran is getting ready

Fran-Hey Sara!

Kitchen- where Sara is finishing eating

Sara- Yeah MA!

Bathroom-

Fran-Are ya done yet, ya need ta hurry up before Grandma Syl comes and get

ya!

Kitchen-

Sara- I’m almost done Ma! I’ll be in the bathroom soon! Oh Ma, is it alright

I take a couple of Barbie Dolls to school so I have something to play with!

Bathroom-

Fran- I don’t care Doll, Mach Shnel, hurry up!

Kitchen-

Sara- ALRIGHT!!

Sara hurries up and gets in the bathroom where she starts brushing her

teeth. Fran comes behind Sara and starts doing her hair just like her

mothers, nice and big.

Before they knew it Sylvia was waiting for Sara and Fran had to leave for

work. So they said their goodbyes and gave each other hugs and kisses.

SCENE- Todd’s studio, Fran’s work. As Fran walked into Todd’s designer

studio, his secretary told Fran that Todd needed to see her right away with

some news.

Fran entered to Todd’s office and prepared for the news, good or bad.

Todd- Fran, I am glad you are here.

Fran- Jenny told me to come in here because you have some news for me.

Todd- Well sit down first.

Fran- Alright, but it better be good news.

Todd- Oh, it is, Now sit.

Todd said with a smile and Fran took a sit across from Todd’s desk.

Fran- So what’s the news Toddy?

Todd- Well as you know I had a very big dinner meeting last night with a

very important client.

Fran-Yes I know.

Todd- Well he is a very wealthy client and he needs my help.

Fran- Well who is he?

Todd- He is a Broadway Producer, maybe you heard of him, Maxwell Sheffield?

Fran- Oh yeah he was in Esquire Magazine for one of the top ten most

eligible millionaire widowers.

Todd- You read Esquire?

Fran- Yeah when they list the most eligible widowers, I do.

Todd- You’re a riot Fran, but I love ya!

Fran- I love ya too Toddy, now tell me about this meeting.

Todd- Oh yes, well he needs a designer to design his costumers for his next

play and is willing to pay half a million dollars to the designer and the

company.

Fran- WOW, that is great Toddy, so he picked you right?

Todd-Yes he did, but I turned him down.

Fran- What are you, a Shmegege?

Fran couldn’t believe what her cousin just told her, she was about to have a

heart attack that her turned down a really good offer.

Todd- Now Frannie, claim down, I told him that I was to busy planning the

new Winter Clothing Line, but I did recommend someone to him.

Fran- Who?!?

Todd-Well who do you think, you of course.

Fran-WHA!!!!

Todd- Yes you, Fran you are wonderful at what you do. You could open your

own clothing line if you wanted to. But you have stuck with me for six and a

half years now and well it is time you go out on your own for once.

Fran- But Toddy, what if you need my help, what if I need yours.

Todd- Don’t worry about it, if I need your help I will ask for it. Same with

you, if you need my help, I am willing and I am just a phone call away.

Fran- Oh Toddy you are the best, I could just plotz right here.

Fran got up and ran to Todd and gave him a huge hug and then sat back down.

Fran- So what did Mr. Sheffield say?

Todd- Well he wants to meet you for lunch at Le Pain Quotidien Bakery on

58th Street.

Fran- Alright that sounds wonderful, and Toddy...

Todd- Yes Frannie?

Fran- Your wonderful.

Todd- Anytime Frannie, and good luck. He is a wonderful man, you will have a

good time and don’t be nervous.

Fran- Thank you Toddy!

Fran got up and gave Todd another hug and ran to her office to get some of

her designs ready for Maxwell Sheffield. She couldn’t believe it, she was

going to meet and work for a handsome millionaire and have a job that she

was going to enjoy. Even though Todd told her not to be nervous, she sure

was.

As Fran arrived at this bakery, she didn’t know what to say to him. She knew

she would have to class it up. She was thankful her outfit was a little

decent for someone who had a little class but the outfit still said this is

me FRAN FINE. The outfit was a red and black plaid jacket and skirt that was

½ inch above her knees. On the jacket for the cufflinks was black fur. With

the outfit she wore black heels that Sara/Sylvia bought for her birthday.

Fran walked in the bakery and saw him. She recognized him from the magazine.

It was Maxwell Sheffield and he was sitting at a two person table drinking

coffee, while waiting for her. She slowly made her way over to him and

introduced herself.

Fran- Hello Mr. Sheffield, I’m Fran Fine

Max looked up and he could not believe it. His new employee was breathtaking

but that voice was so different. He stood up and just admire her. Then he

decided to introduce himself as well.

Max- Well hello Ms. Fine or is it Mrs?

Fran-No it’s Ms. and I can’t believe its true.

Max- Me too, I mean I am sorry that you are not married.

Fran- Oh, its alright, I am use to it. Even though my mother keeps praying

that I will get married to a doctor or a lawyer. By the way are ya going to

stop shaking my hand it is getting kinda tired.

Max- Oh I apologize, please sit down and have a cup of coffee with me. Our

food should be here soon.

Fran sat down and could not believe he already ordered for her. But she didn

’t care, it was food.

Fran- So, would you like to see my work.

Max- Not now, I want to get to know you first, so I know what kind of person

I will be working with.

Fran- Oh yeah of course.

Just then a waitress interrupted

Waitress- Miss what you like to drink?

Fran-Coffee, please and make it regular with no cream but I want sugar.

Waitress- Alright, I will be right back.

Fran- Thank you.

Then the waitress left to get Fran her coffee.

Fran- So Mr. Sheffield, what would you like to know about me.

Max- Well, how long have you been with Todd?

Fran-I have been with Todd for six and half years now. He is a wonderful

man, and a great family member.

Max- You are family?

Fran- Yes, my father and his mother are cousins, which would make my Grandma

Nettie and his grandfather sister and brother.

Max-Nettie, is that a nickname or something like that?

Fran- Nope that is her first name. I also have a Grandma Yetta, and yes that

is her first name too.

Max- Sounds like you have an interesting family.

Fran- Oh you have no idea. If you actually hire me, trust me you will meet

them.

Max- I don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing?

Fran did her signature laugh and slapped Max on the arm. Then Max gave her a

confused look with his face all wrinkled.

Fran-What’s that look for?

Max- Nothing you have and interesting laugh that is all with a very unique

voice.

Fran- What you don’t like my laugh or voice, gee !

Max- No, no not at all. I just have not heard anybody with that accent.

Fran- Well your British, so you probably are new to the Queens accent.

Max- Queens, what is that?

Fran- Just hang on here comes the waitress with my coffee and our food.

Max- Alright.

The waitress handed Fran her coffee, and put the sandwiches and soup on the

table.

Max- Thank you Miss.

Waitress- Your welcome, enjoy!

As the waitress left Fran just stared at the food.

Max- Well are you going to eat?

Fran- What’s the soup?

Max- Vegetable on the right and Chicken on the left. Then the two sandwiches

have everything on them. They have ham, turkey, and chicken, with tomatoes,

lettuce, and onions. What soup do you want?

Fran- I’ll have the Chicken unless you want it.

Max- No that is alright, I like both kinds of soup.

Max handed Fran her sandwich and bowl of soup and notice Fran was still

nervous. He noticed she was when she walked in and introduce herself.

Max- Fran, I’ve notice you are still nervous, why?

Fran- I don’t know, I have never been so nervous in my life. But when I do I

become a real Hok A Chainik..

Max- A Hok A What?

Fran- A person who talks to much, or a person who talks nonsense.

Max- Really, I never heard of that word before.

Fran- I know why, you are a gentile.

Max- Oh I see you are Jewish.

Fran- I hope you don’t have a problem with that.

Max- Oh not at all.

Fran- Well if you hear odd words coming out of my mouth it is just Yiddish.

Max- Okay, I have a feeling I will learn this Yiddish language of yours.

Fran- Why do you say that

Max- Well before I met you, thanks to you cousin, you have the job.

Fran- Really, Oh Mr. Sheffield, I promise you, you won’t regret this.

Fran got up, went to Max side and bent over and gave him a huge hug.

Max- What was that for?

Fran sat back down at her seat and took a sip of her coffee. The coffee

still didn’t have enough sugar in her coffee, so she grabbed two more sugar

packets and put them in her coffee.

Fran- Well, I gave you the hug because you gave me a job that I wouldn’t

have dreamed of in a life time. WHA!!

Max gave her a what are you doing look as Fran poured the sugar packets into

her coffee.

Max- Not enough sugar?

Fran- Nope, I have to have a lot of sugar in my coffee, I always have made

it that way.

All Max could do was give her a little chuckle

Max- You know Ms. Fine, I can tell you have a great sense of humor.

Fran- Really, thank you, but what about you British, how can we tell what

you are feeling. I mean it you are very unemotional. What do you all wear,

mood rings?

Max- Very funny Ms. Fine, I can not help it, it is how I was raised. But

when there is liquor involved, all kinds of emotions come out.

Fran- You British and your liquor.

Fran was shaking her head and laughing, while Max was just looking at her

and chuckling.

Fran- So, Mr. Sheffield, did your wife and you have any children?

Max- Yes we did, by the way how did you know I was once married?

Fran- Esquire.

Max- Oh that’s right, they put me on that one list, but yes we had three

children. First we had Margaret, she is 14 now she is real shy and is to

busy not being a teenager. She thinks since her mother is gone and she is

the oldest child that she has to be the mother figure to the youngest.

Fran- But in reality she is the one that needs that mother figure.

Max-Yes, so do my other children, but she is to grown up for her age and

needs to be a teenager. Then there is the trouble maker in the family.

Brighton, he just turned 11. Everytime we hire a new nanny, well they quit

the first day because of him. I just have not found the right nanny to keep

him in line. I would send him off to boarding school but my parents sent me

their and well I know how it is there.

Fran- And you don’t want him to go through what you did?

Max- Of course not but if he does not get in line soon, I will have to do

something rational.

Fran- Hopefully you won’t. I know he will stop soon, he is just going

through a phase. All boys do.

Max- You sure do know a lot about children.

Fran- Last summer Todd and I did a children’s fashion line and well I had to

watch all six of them. Three boys and three girls. While Todd was having a

meeting with their parents, and the boys were a pain in the tochas.

Max- Well I hope you are right.

Fran- I am, trust me he will come around.

Max- Oh, you want to know about my third child, Ah Grace, she will be

turning seven soon. She can be a angel and a devil at the same time. She is

smart as a whip and knows words that I don’t even know. The sad thing is I

had to put her in therapy when her mother died. So she has been there for

three years now. I try to help her remember Sara. Its just when I think

about Sarah I loose it and can’t come to words, so I hide out for a while.

Fran- Mr. Sheffield, that is so sad. I am so sorry.

Fran reached over and touched Max’s hand. To Max that was comforting. He has

not felt that kind of comfort for a long time. Max could tell Fran has a

heart of gold. She was comic side to her, she was comforting, she was sweet,

but he could tell something was missing.

Max-Fran, I know you are not married and I know you have worked with

children and are probably good with them, but do you have any of your own.

Fran- Yes I do, a little girl, she is six.

Max- Ah. Grace’s age. What does she look like?

Fran- Hang on I have a picture of her in my purse.

Fran grabbed her purse and pulled out a picture of Sara and handed it to

Max.

Max -Oh Wow, she looks just like her mother.

Fran- Is that good or bad?

Max- Very good, I hope when she grows up she looks like her mother still.

Fran- Oh Mr. Sheffield!

Fran couldn’t believe her ears. Was Max flirting with her and was she

blushing.

Max- Ms. Fine why are you so red.

Fran- Uh... I don’t know?

Max- Sure! But anyways what is your daughters name?

Fran- Well you might find this kinda freaky, I heard that your wife’s name

was Sara?

Max- Yes, why?

Fran- Well that is my daughter’s name.

Max couldn’t believe his ears now. Was she really telling the truth? Was

Fran’s daughter really named Sara.

Max- Really, you picked a beautiful name for her.

Fran- Thank you Mr. Sheffield, I am so proud to be her mother. Like how you

are proud to be Maggie’s, Brighton’s, and Gracie’s father.

Max- I am.

Well after they ate Fran showed Max her work and Max was even more

surprised. Once Max saw Fran’s work he knew he hired the right person. Now

what was his business partner, C. C. Babcock was going to think of her? Oh

well he didn’t care. He knew he made the right choice and he knew his

children would love her if they meet her.

They ended their meeting and got ready to leave. Max pulled out Fran’s chair

and took her hand and walked her out to her car.

Max- Fran I had a wonderful lunch with you.

Fran- I did too, and once again thank you for hiring me. I can not wait to

tell Todd.

Max- Don’t forget to tell Sara and your parents either.

Fran- Oh I won’t.

Max- Well I hate to say good bye, but I will see you tomorrow at the

theater.

Fran- What time do I need to be there?

Max- Is ten in the morning sound okay?

Fran- Yes it does, I can actually take Sara to school tomorrow.

Max- Alright then I will see you tomorrow.

Fran- Bye Mr. Sheffield.

Max- Bye Ms. Fine.

Max opened her car door for her and helped her get in. Once her knew she was

in he shut the door for her. They waved goodbye and went to their thoughts.

Max started walking towards his limo when he started to listen to is

thoughts

-Maxwell you old chap, you hired a wonderful woman. Hopefully we become

friends, wait I think we already are. She already knows a lot about me and I

already know a lot about her. She is just what I needed in a friend. The

children will love her when they meet her. Maybe she is what the family

needs. She is the kind of person to save a family like mine. You know what

Ms. Fran Fine you saved me.-

Fran was looking out her review mirror as she drove off. She watched Max

walk until he was not visible anymore. Then her thoughts came to her.- Fran

what are you thinking, he is way out of your league. But he would be perfect

for Sara. She would love him once she meets him. He is the kind of man I

really need. Well just a friend though. He is the kind of man to save a

family like mine. You know what Mr. Maxwell Sheffield you saved me.
