Why do you always yell at me? Do you think it solves anything, Fran cried as she ran out the door. She hailed a cab and that was the end of this argument.
Later that night Maxwell was sitting at his desk when his friend Niles walked in, "Sir dinner is ready. Are you going to come to the table or do you want to sit in here?"
"No old man I think I’d rather sit in here and think. Are the children even home?"
"No Sir they went out tonight…I brought you this tape though it might soothe your aching soul. I am sure you’ll know what to do." Maxwell just stares blankly at the tape placed on his desk as Niles leaves the room quietly. Niles had heard the blow out from early this morning. He wasn’t sure what to make of it. Usually Maxwell does yell and scream at her, but today it was different. Maybe it was all of her dates or maybe it was just the sexual tension.
Maxwell pulls out the tape deck and plays the song…
When you feel in your body somebody who makes you changes your ways like working late on plays…
Said you act like your ready, but you don’t really know…And everything in your past you want let it go
I’ve been there done it messed around hurt you but after all of this I found that nobody really wants to be alone
If you’re touched by the words in this song then maybe
You got it you got it bad
when your fighting and you want to take it all back
Then you got it you got it bad…
Maxwell thinks of all the things he’s done to Fran and a tear reaches his eyes…He relives all of the fights and arguments that they’ve had over the years and he can hardly bare the pictures he sees in front of his mind's eye…
Fran: Why do you act this way? You say you love me then you take it back I mean how much of this do you seriously expect me too take?
Max: Do you know what the most important thing in any relationship is Miss Fine?
Fran: Forgiveness?
Max: No Trust and I can see that we don’t have that…so I don’t think I could ever have a relationship with you…
Max sees another picture of things that happened, but this time it’s a picture of them together. Walking in Paris just enjoying their time together…
Fran: Oh Mr. Sheffield thank you for the beautiful time…I love y…I love it…
Max: It is my pleasure Miss Fine…
If you miss a day without your friend your whole life’s off track
You know you got it bad when you’re stuck in the house
You don’t want leave
You don’t want to have fun because all your thinking about is somebody else
You got it you got it bad…
He thinks about all of the dances they’ve shared over the years. How he’s felt like they were matched in every way. Remembering the dance they shared at her reunion how happy she was to be in his arms. How happy he was. He can remember the smile on her face every morning when she breezes down the stairs. He looks at the pictures on his desk one of Sarah and him, and the other of Fran and him…he begins to talk to Sarah…
Max: My dearest Sarah what am I to do? I think I am in love, but every time I start to talk we argue? I can’t imagine life without her. The time we share is the most precious. I feel free in here arms, but every time I gather the courage to say anything I feel like I am going to lose the nerve. I know the kids love her, and she makes the family whole, but then I want to hold her touch her kiss her… just being with her but then I feel I am cheating on you. I can’t stand it anymore…why can’t I be happy? What about the kids…I don’t want to hurt you, but I am hurting her too…
Sara’s Ghost: Oh Maxwell, I can see that you don’t understand…I sent her to you! I want you to move on. Don’t be alone your whole life! You can love many people and not forget your first love. Listen to me carefully my mother taught me this poem when I was a child and I think its time you heard it, it is called, "If Tomorrow Never Comes:"
If I knew that it would be the last time
That I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
And pray the Lord, your soul to keep.
If I knew that it would be the last time
That I'd see you walk out the door,
I would give you a kiss
And call you back for one more.
If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
So I could play them back day after day.
If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute or two
I would stop and say I love you,
Instead of assuming you KNOW I do.
If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
Well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
So I can let just this one slip away.
For surely there's always tomorrow
To make up for an oversight,
And we always get a second chance
To make everything right.
There will always be another day
To say our love you's and certainly
There’s time to say our "Anything I can do's?"
But just in case I might be wrong,
And today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
And hope we never forget.
Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
Young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance you get
To hold your loved one tight.
So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
Why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
You'll surely regret the day.
That you didn't take that extra time
For a smile, a hug, or a kiss
And you were too busy to grant someone
What turned out to be their one last wish?
So hold your loved ones close today,
Whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
And that you'll always hold them dear.
Take time to say, "I'm sorry, please forgive me,"
"Thank you" or "it's okay."
And if tomorrow never comes,
You'll have no regrets today.
Maxwell I haven’t much time left with you, but remember this do not assume people know anything. Even though the sun always rises and sets people are not always here. Think about this, would she know you loved her if she died tomorrow? Max I know your loving and gentle show this too her…she needs it and you need her (the last part was a quiet whisper…)
Maxwell after hearing the quiet whisper decides to finally make his move. The song plays again on the cassette tape. Sitting at his desk he sees more of his fights with Miss. Fine this one in particular he remembers very clearly…
MISS FINE! Maxwell screamed and he every right this time she’d gone too far messed up this deal with an important backer. He just didn’t understand how she had the ability to ruin every deal without fail. First it was the Pearls and then it is this. A package that all she had to do was deliver after she dropped Grace off at ballet.
Fran: Yes Mr. Sheffield what did I do this time? (She was so sick of being accused of things she didn’t do. Everyday her butt was in the line of fire. I mean what am I supposed to do with this man?)
Max: Where is that important package I asked you too mail to Mr. Biggs almost five and half weeks ago?
Fran: Oh I gave it too ma so I could take Maggie too the doctor…oy she must’ve forgotten I am so sorry what was in the package anyhow?
Max: Just a contract that needed to be signed for five million dollars for my next PLAY!
Fran: Oy Mr. Sheffield I am so sorry…
Max: You know Miss. Fine please leave I need to be alone for a while.
Once again she ruined a deal what am I going to do with this woman?
Max: You know what Miss Fine I can’t believe that you did. Did I ask you too take the package not your mother (he says raising his voice)
Fran: Oy I am so sorry what can I do?
Max: Nothing I need to be alone…
This flashback makes Maxwell shutter as he learns another thing he blamed Miss. Fine for he sees the picture of her hurt look after he dismissed her. There is a moment where he wished he could just shout from the roof tops how much he really loved her as he thinks a little more the song plays louder…
When you say that you love 'em
And you really know
Everything that used to matter, don't matter no more
Like my money, all my cars (You can have it all back) Flowers, cards and candy
Said I'm fortunate to have you I want you to know I really adore you
All my people (the kids, C.C., Niles,) who know what's going on
You got you got it bad when all you want to do is think about the person over and over again…
This verse really hits him hard…everyone really does know how he already feels so why is he hiding it? I love her…why am I hiding it? He thinks…he sees another flashback at the beach…
Max: Thank you for suggesting this trip Miss. Fine this is exactly what I needed…
Fran: Well sometimes you got to spoil yourself…
He leans into kiss her when the kids run up and ask them to play a game of volleyball. The play until late and all go home as a family.
The song ends with the last verse of You got it bad…
You got it bad when all you think about is her…
You got it bad when all you want to do is hold her…
You got it bad when all you do is see her every day and night…
You got it you got it bad…
The tape ends and Maxwell jumps up with a new plan in his heart…all he knows is he must go get her at all costs.
Max snaps back to reality and walks out of the office he sees Niles pretending to dust. He bumps into Niles to start a little conversation about the whereabouts of his missing Nanny…
Max: Niles do not lie to me or your Christmas bonus is gone, where is Miss. Fine…
Niles: Sir, what makes you think I know where she may be?
Max: C’mon on Niles you are the biggest Yenta in this house…
Niles: Sir I will tell you this she is either at her mother’s or Val’s house take your pick…
Maxwell looks at his watch and decides on this night it is too late to go looking for his beloved Nanny, but there is always tomorrow…Questions float through his mind though, will she want me back? What should I do when I see her? Should I grab her and kiss her? I know have to pull out the big show to win her heart…back at least…What am I going to do about her mother? Maybe bring food…before he turns in for the night that song plays a little again…
You got it you got it bad
when your fighting and you want to take it all back
Then you got it you got it bad
After a restless night Maxwell decides to go to Fran and try to show her how precious she is to him. He calls Fran’s mother’s apartment, but on whim decided that an earful was not really what he needed before he proclaimed love again to Fran. So he hung up… and as he left the townhouse he felt the rain that was now softly falling. He stopped for a moment and then as if acting on intuition made his way towards Central Park. As he walked he soaked up the rain feeling it washing away all the bad times he had experienced since Sarah's death. It was a cleansing experience that reached right through to his soul. As he entered the park he made a silent prayer of thanks to Sarah for loving him and for sending Fran to him. As he finished the rain also left. It left a rainbow stretching across the sky and as Maxwell looked at it he realized it lead him to something much more precious than the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Sitting on a bench was Fran, her jacket pulled tightly around her and deep in thought.
Maxwell walked over to her and knelt in front of her forcing her head up by placing his finger under her chin. She raised her eyes and in them he saw tears and her deep love for him. "I'm sorry Fran. I know now that I can't deny my feelings any longer. I love you Fran."
Fran smiled, "I love you too Maxwell" she simply replied before they shared a tender kiss. The rest of the day was spent drying off and enjoying their new relationship in a pleasantly deserted townhouse. After a long hot shower together they happily informed their family of the happy events that were soon to occur. That night as Sylvia began making plans for her daughter's wedding, Fran and Maxwell slept in each other’s arms as they dreamt of their future together.
The End
Well, that's it for now probably I mean it took me so long to get them together I don't know if I could muster another part. I will if there are enough people who would like one. I would like to thank Tracey for the editing and helping me right a suitable ending. Thanks for the support…
