Season Four

This episode was filmed in the spring of 1996 to accommodate the filming schedule of Beautician and the Beast that summer. But in June, an airliner going to Paris went down killing all aboard. The similarities to the scheduled season opener were just a little bit too close for comfort so the opening scene of "The Tart With Heart" was changed. The script for that "lost scene" has been on the page for quite some time, but I thought some of you might enjoying seeing a Real Video of the cut section. This was a production tape, and so it isn't entirely finished. The scene of the announcer on the TV set had yet to be dubbed in, so the screen you see is black. Also, you can see the film counters in the corners. But still, you can see what it would have been like had not the real life tragedy occurred. After this scene and then the opening credits, the show continued with the scene on the steps of the Sheffield Mansion. Or you can read the "lost scene", though the finished version is a bit different than the script.
![]() Mr. Sheffield and Fran are arriving home from Paris. Maxwell stops them before they go in the door. Max: You know how it is when you're facing death and you sometimes say things without thinking? Fran: No. | ![]() Max: Ah. Miss Fine, I thought we were spending our last moments on earth together up there and so that's why I said, you know, the thing. Fran: The thing? Max: You know. That I felt that way at that time, in that place. Fran: Oh my God. You're taking back the thing? |
![]() Grace is writing a report for school on a woman with an interesting career. She chooses C.C., hurting Fran's feelings a little. | ![]() Meanwhile, Maxwell is anxious to make up to Fran in any way possible but she is not having any of it. Max: Oh Miss Fine, how long are you going to torture me with this? Fran: I'm not going to torture you about it. That's why I came in here, to tell you that I'm over it. Max: Oh really? Fran: No, took it back. How's it feel? |
![]() C.C. rubs it in that Fran is only a pretty face with no skills. |
![]() Looking to reassure herself that Mr. Sheffield doesn't just see her as a pretty face, Fran asks him why he hired her in the first place. Max thinks he has a surefire way off the hook of the thing. Fran: When you hired me, did you think I was just attractive? Max: Absolutely not, I thought you beautiful, stunning, drop dead gorgeous. Fran: How dare you! Why do you keep trying to hurt me like this? | ![]() Fran and Val go out to drown her sorrows in the nearest bar. |
![]() Jack (Jason Alexander) tries to pick Fran up. She decides to go out with him because he is blind and not interested in her because of her looks. |
![]() Max is still trying to make up to Fran. I want to order the diamond earrings on page 12. And Niles is trying to figure out just exactly what is going on.... | ![]() Max's jealousy kicks in immediately. Max: Well, you certainly bounced back awfully quickly. Fran: Would you mind if we discussed this later? Max: Fine. What time do you think you will you be home? Fran: Well, I think you lost the right to know that when you took back "the thing."

![]() Jack arrives to take Fran out on their date. |
![]() Off on their date, Jack points out Fran's obsession when she just can't stop talking about Mr. Sheffield. | ![]() Fran goes to visit Ma. Sylvia: You're taking it pretty well being dumped by a blind guy. Fran: Don't you see, he has no idea what I look like, he dumped me for who I really am. | ![]() Sylvia flirts with the butcher to get a better cut of meat and Fran reprimands her for using her looks to get her way. |
![]() But Sylvia points out to Fran the real reason Maxwell took it back. Sylvia: He took it back because he's a basket case. We don't have the market on guilt you know. Guilt over the late wife, guilt over the kids, guilt over marrying out of his class... Fran: Gee Ma, ya know I think you're right. It isn't me, it's him! I never realized how tortured and unhappy he is. This makes me feel so much better! | ![]() Later that night, Fran finds Max sitting alone on the front steps. She sits down and they talk. Max: You know, Miss Fine? You're right, I am afraid. That's why I took it back. Fran: I know. Max: I've only really been in love once in my life and when my wife died... well, I'm just afraid to go through that pain again. What if it didn't work out between us? What about the children? Fran: Well, it would be hard at first, but we'd let you come visit us on weekends. |
![]() Maxwell: Oh Miss Fine, what if something happened between us, it could ruin everything we have. Fran: Or it could add a whole other dimension that wouldn't be entirely unpleasant. Or it could ruin it. It's happened before. Max: So, we agree then? Friends? | ![]() Fran and Max: Friends. |
![]() Fran: Friends. |

This thing called love, I just can't handle it This thing called love, I must get 'round to it I ain't ready Crazy little thing called love This thing (this thing) called love (called love) It cries (like a baby) in a cradle all night It swings (woo-ooo), it jives (woo-woo) It shakes all over like a jelly fish I kinda like it Crazy little thing called love There goes my baby She knows how to rock and roll She drives me crazy She gives me hot and cold fever Then she leaves me in a cool, cool sweat I gotta be cool, relax Get hip, get on my tracks Take a back seat, hitch-hike |
And take a long ride on my motor bike Until I'm ready Crazy little thing called love I gotta be cool relax Get hip and get on my tracks Take a back seat, hitch-hike And take a long ride on my motor bike Until I'm ready Crazy little thing called love This thing called love, I just can't handle it This thing called love, I must get 'round to it I ain't ready Crazy little thing called love Crazy little thing called love, yeah, yeah Crazy little thing called love, yeah, yeah Crazy little thing called love, yeah, yeah Crazy little thing called love, yeah, yeah Crazy little thing called love, yeah, yeah |
