Max and Fran are out looking in an Art Gallery window when Maxwell notices his father inside the gallery.

To avoid his father seeing him, he grabs Fran and kisses her. It doesn't work and James comes over to talk.

Max and his Dad quarrel and Max stomps off. Fran can't stand to see them angry at each other so she invites James for dinner.

Maxwell is furious with Fran and threatens to fire her.
Fran: You can't leave now, my mother is coming over. She's going to think we're having problems.
Max: We are. You're about to be found floating in the river and I'm about to be pulled in for questioning.

Niles takes advantage of the situation to make a buck or two.
C.C.: Ooohh, this is fabulous!
Niles: Relive the magic at home, $19.95.

Maxwell can't forgive his dad for abandoning him as a child.
Fran: Why don't you give your father a chance to make up for lost time? I'm sure you'd find you have a lot in common.
Max: Unlike my father, I am not about to abandon my responsibilities for sexual gratification with some cheap floozy who works for me.

When they arrive for dinner, Fran and the 'cheap floozy' hit it off immediately.

Dinner is awkward at best. Max is barely speaking, so Joan and Fran carry on the bulk of the conversation. They have a lot in common and get along great.

Then they find out that James and Joan are married, not just having an affair. That news sends Fran over the edge.
Fran: You're married?? Isn't that delightful!
And Max reacts to the news by leaving the table.

The next day, Fran is sorry she ever got involved. Joan arrives to try to help smooth things over.

Joan tells Fran it took James 10 years to make his move, and what finally did it was a sexy little midriff top.

Fran decides to give the midriff top idea a shot and goes in to see Mr. Sheffield appropriately attired.

Max: Maybe I should just face the fact that my father fell in love with his secretary.
Fran: And your sister fell in love with her chauffeur.
Max: And my grandfather married his maid.
Fran: No sense breaking tradition.
Max: None that I can see.

And it works!
Max: I've always resented my father for his total lack of concern for anyone's feelings but his own. He always lived solely for his own pleasure. Maybe that ain't so bad! I mean, I'm a man, I have needs too.

The family arrives interrupting the moment. James shows his selfish stripes again and Max changes his mind about living like his dad.

Max: What was I thinking? I was actually trying to be more like you. Now I remember how much pain your selfishness causes other people. I'm sorry Miss Fine. Sorry for what almost happened here. Well that's bloody over with now.
Fran: Alrighty then.

Max and Fran are out shopping at that gallery again when Fran thinks she spies James and they grab each other for a kiss.
Max: Miss Fine, that was not my father.
Fran: Oh, my mistake.

Me and Mrs. Jones
Written by Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff and Cary Gilbert

Me and Mrs. Jones, we got a thing going on,
We both know that it's wrong
But it's much too strong to let it cool down now.
We meet ev'ry day at the same cafe,
Six-thirty I know she'll be there,
Holding hands, making all kinds of plans
While the jukebox plays our favorite song.
Me and Mrs., Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Jones,
Mrs. Jones got a thing going on,
We both know that it's wrong,
But it's much too strong to let it cool down now.
We gotta be extra careful that we don't build our hopes too high
Cause she's got her own obligations and so do I,
Me, me and Mrs., Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Jones,
Mrs. Jones got a thing going on,
We both know that it's wrong,
But it's much too strong to let it cool down now.
Well, it's time for us to be leaving,
It hurts so much, it hurts so much inside,
Now she'll go her way and I'll go mine,
But tomorrow we'll meet the same place, the same time.
Me and Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Jones.
