| It's their first night at home and Fran has kept Max waiting 45 minutes before she finally emerges from the bathroom. | But Fran's enthusiasm gets a "shush" from Max. Fran: "Shush?" Max: I'm sorry darling but you were getting a little too loud. Fran: I'm too loud and now is the time you chose to bring it up? |
| They argue and Fran takes off for her Mother's. Sylvia recommends that she compromise. (And stick a Hostess Snowball in her mouth to plug up the sound!) | Max is getting advise from his muse too. Niles: Marriage is a compromise. Max: Yes I know, I know. And she's passionate, aggressive, exciting and I'm..... Niles: Not. | The next morning, Fran sneaks in the house, but the kids catch her. They heard the fight the night before. Fran: But I don't want you kids to worry about it at all. I mean just because I spent the night at Ma's doesn't mean that we're going to be getting a divorce. Grace: Then why did Daddy call his attorney? Fran: What??? Grace: Kidding. |
| Fran finds Max out on the terrace. Fran promises to try to be more demure, and Max promises to be more "loosy goosy." | Max: I have a wonderful idea. What do you say we make arrangements for the children tonight, to have the whole house to ourselves. That way when we come back from the business dinner, we can party hearty. |
| That night, Fran has to work hard to get rid of everybody. Maggie: Oh I get it, you want everybody out of the house so you and dad can..... uck. | Then she confronts C.C., who is surprised that Fran is going to the business dinner. Fran: Miss Babcock, you know now that Max and I are married, I think it would be much better for your health if you would just go out and get a life! Make friends, meet people, move on.... C.C.: No. I want him, he's mine and nobody's going to take him from me. |
| Niles manages to finagle a night at the Waldorf Astoria out of the situation. |
| At the party, Max has sold himself to the writer of a hot new play and he has agreed to let Max produce it for him. | Max needs to use the facilities and Fran says she will wait for him. But Max just can't bring himself to do it in front of her. Max: Get out! I can't do it, I can't do it. All right, I admit I'm uptight. Now please, I had two very large martini's, go. Fran: All right, I hear you. Marriage is all about compromise. This will just be something you'll have to get used to gradually. Max: No, never. There are certain intimacies that should never be shared. But when she tries to leave, the doorknob comes off in her hand and they are trapped. |
| Fran runs into the bathroom after Max to celebrate his success. |
| Max still refuses to go, so Fran goes out on the ledge while she waits for him. She gets excited looking in the other windows of the mansion and falls off. | Her fall was broken by the writer Max had been courting and he was crushed to death. At the funeral, Fran tries to get Max to see the bright side, but he can't find it. Fran: I'm sorry I crushed your writer. It was a freak accident, these things happen. | They decide they better accept each other the way they are or more innocent people will die. |
| Later, Max is in the office reading the play that he lost the rights to and laughing hysterically. When he calls for Fran to read it, she tries to run. Fran: Tell him I'm working. Niles: No, no, no, you're his wife now. | But it turns out that Fran saved the day again. Max: This play is hysterical. Fran: You're happy? Why? Max: Cause it's a drama! I'd have lost my shirt if you hadn't fallen on Wendell. |

|
I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden along with the sunshine there's got to be a little rain sometimes when you take you got to give so live and let live or let go I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden. I could promise you things like big diamond rings but you don't find roses growing on stocks of clover so better think it over well if sweet talking you would make it come true I'd give you the world right now on a silver platter but what would it matter so smile for a while and let's be jolly love shouldn't be so melancholy come along and share the good times while we can. |
I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden along with the sunshine there's got to be a little rain sometimes. I could sing you a tune and promise you the moon but if that's what it takes to hold you I'd just as soon let you go but there's one thing I want you to know you better look before you leap still water runs deep and there won't always be someone there to pull you out and you know what I'm talkin' about so smile for a while and let's be jolly love shouldn't be so melancholy come on and share the good times while we can. I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden along with the sunshine there's got to be a little rain sometimes. |
