| Sara's parents are coming to visit and Max wants Fran to make a good impression since, in their minds, Fran is essentially replacing their daughter. Max: Now they'll be here any minute and I want you to make a good impression, so please, get out of that robe. Fran: Alright, what do you think they'll think of this? | Max: I don't know, why don't you ask them. |
| | |
| So the first impression isn't that great, but Fran figures taking them out to dinner for ribs will win them over. Max thinks a more sedate dinner would be better; he wants to make sure Fran's charm and warmth come through before he breaks it to them that Fran is going to be adopting the kids. | Taking the first step to being the perfect wife and mother, Fran makes breakfast for the entire family---the "Fran" way. |
| At breakfast, Fran continues to impress Roberta and Ernest (Bert and Ernie to Fran). Even the suggestion of visiting the Whitney Museum confuses her. Fran: She's got a museum? Oh I wonder it they are going to have that metallic outfit that she wore in "The Bodyguard." |
| The museum doesn't go real well either, so Fran and the kids try a karaoke bar to dazzle them. Fran thinks "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" is going pretty well and chooses to tell them in song about the adoption. Roberta: Over my dead body! | They contest the adoption on the grounds that Fran is an unfit mother. C.C. points out to Fran that Sara's parents will dig up all kinds of dirt from her past in order to prove it. |
| Sylvia advises Fran not to fight them so that Max won't find out about her less than stellar past. | Fran decides to spill to Max about her past, but he had run an FBI background check on her when he hired her and knew all about that stuff anyway. Fran: Everything? Even my age? Max: Actually, that was the one thing even the FBI couldn't verify. Closest they could get was 31. Fran: 31? Well, I guess the truth is out! |
| Fran and the kids discuss the situation. Fran says that it is just a piece of paper and won't change how they feel, but Mags points out that if something happened to Max, Fran could lose the two younger kids. |
| Fran: Oh Roberta, I don't mean to seem insensitive. I understand that the kids are your link to Sara. But my adopting them is never going to change that. Roberta: Well, I'm sorry, but I worry that they don't even think about their mother anymore. | Maggie: That's not true Grandma, we think about Mom all the time. And sometimes when we really miss her, Fran puts in old video tapes of her and watches them with us. Brighton: And every year on Mom's birthday, Fran has us light a Yarzseit candle for her. Roberta: A what? Brighton: Well, it's a Jewish tradition, it sorta lights the way to a happy afterlife. |
| Later, Fran is talking to Niles. Fran: Take pity on her, she's old, she's lonely, she's losing her mind. It's just one night, one dinner. How's it going to kill ya? Niles: Oh all right, but I'm only doing this for you. Fran: Thank you. | Niles: Come on Babcock, I'll let you buy me dinner. |
Ain't No Mountain High Enough
|
Listen, baby Ain't no mountain high Ain't no valley low Ain't no river wide enough, baby If you need me, call me No matter where you are No matter how far Just call my name I'll be there in a hurry You don't have to worry 'Cause baby, There ain't no mountain high enough Ain't no valley low enough Ain't no river wide enough To keep me from getting to you Remember the day I set you free I told you You could always count on me From that day on I made a vow I'll be there when you want me Some way, some how |
'Cause baby, There ain't no mountain high enough Ain't no valley low enough Ain't no river wide enough To keep me from getting to you No wind, no rain My love is alive Way down in my heart Although we are miles apart If you ever need a helping hand I'll be there on the double As fast as I can Don't you know that There ain't no mountain high enough Ain't no valley low enough Ain't no river wide enough To keep me from getting to you Don't you know that There ain't no mountain high enough Ain't no valley low enough Ain't no river wide enough |
