Grace is applying to the East Side School for the Gifted. Fran and Grace plan on impressing the headmistress by inviting her to a fancy-schmancy music appreciation day at the house.

Meanwhile, Maxwell is excited that his old friend from college, Rodney, is in town.

The next day at the music appreciation party, Fran tells the headmistress about her fond memories of school with Tootie, Blair and Natalie. The head mistress seems suitably impressed until...

Max arrives toasted.
Max: Where's my little coochy coo? Hey sexy, come on, move those beautiful legs over here and come say hello to Rodney.
Fran: [to the headmistress]Pardon doll.

He introduces Fran to Rodney.
Rodney: Max, she's breathtaking. How the devil could you have waited five years to propose to her you perfect fool?
Fran: Oh thank you Rodney.
Rodney: And she does funny voices!

Fran tries to hustle them away but they go right through the party into the office. Maxwell tells Fran they have to discuss the big 'hush-hush' deal Rodney has going that Maxwell wants to invest in.

Niles receives some good news in the mail. He inherited a royal title from an uncle and is excited at the thought that he might be rich.

The next day, Max is called away for emergency business meeting in London and has to leave immediately.

Rodney arrives and asks Fran to write the check for the investment since Max had to leave before he could give it to him. C.C. objects, but Fran insists that Max would want her to.
Fran: This is a private investment made by Max and myself.
CC: Well I am in charge of that too because... you're stupid.
Fran: Now Miss Babcock, my husband wants in on this deal and I'm just doing what he would want.

They fight over the checkbook but Fran wins. She writes out a check for a million dollars and hands it over to Rodney, who then leaves.

Jocelyn arrives, saying she could really go for Rodney if only he weren't broke and looking for new victims.
Fran: Ohhhhh... [to C.C.] Oh Maxwell is going to fire you when he hears you let me write that check.

Fran tries to stop the check but can't. She and C.C. talk it over in a donut shop where Val now works.
C.C.: Here's to you Nanny Fine, it was just a matter of time till you screwed up with Maxwell.
Fran: I know.....
Why am I such a loser?
C.C.: You got cocky. That'll bring you down every time.
Val convinces Fran that she should talk to Rodney about it and at least try to get the money back.

She arrives at Rodney's place and he promptly offers to write her a check. He explains that he was just looking for second chance and would never steer Max wrong.

Fran talks to herself in the mirror and realizes that she has lied sometimes in the past too and that he deserves his second chance.

Back at the house, Max arrives home relieved that he didn't invest with Rodney, having discovered while he was in London the true state of Rodney's finances.
Max: Well I've got something to tell you sweetheart. Rodney is flat broke.
Fran: Really?
Max: I learned all about him in London, it appears he's up to his neck in hock. Thank goodness I left before I invested any money with him. So what did you want to tell me sweetheart?

Fran is a little reluctant to tell Max about what she has done.
Fran: Rodney came over to the house, and I wrote him out a check for the million dollars that you just said you're glad you never gave him.
Max: And?
Fran: And the worst part of it is, he offered to give it back to me and I still didn't take it.
Max: No sweetheart, the worst part of it is that that door doesn't lock from your side.
Fran: Oh, okay. Bye.

They go to Rodney's together but when they arrive the room has been clean out. He is still there though and explains that the deal has gone wonderfully and Maxwell has made a bundle.

Fran's reflections convinces her she should come clean with the school headmistress about her lies. She does, but it turns out the school won't be taking Grace anyway even if Fran is classless because they already have too many kids from privileged backgrounds.

Niles is depressed to discover that his estate is worthless. He has to take a second job just to pay off his credit cards for all the new clothes he had purchased. Welcome to the ranks of Krispy Kream employees!

Man In The Mirror

I'm gonna make a change, for once in my life
It's gonna feel real good,
Gonna make a difference, gonna make it right.

As I turn up the collar on my favorite winter coat
This wind is blowing my mind
I see the kids in the streets, with not enough to eat
Who am I to be blind?
Pretending not to see their needs

A summer disregard, a broken bottle top
And a one man soul
They follow each other on the wind ya' know
'Cause they got nowhere to go
That's why I want you to know

I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself, and then make a change

I've been a victim of a selfish kind of love
It's time that I realize
That there are some with no home, not a nickel to loan
Could it be really me, pretending that they're not alone?

A willow deeply scarred, somebody's broken heart
And a washed-out dream
They follow the pattern of the wind ya' see
'Cause they got no place to be
That's why I'm starting with me
I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself, and then make a change

I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make that..
CHANGE!

I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
No message could have been any clearer
Take a look at yourself and then make the change
You gotta get it right, while you got the time
'Cause when you close your heart
You can't close your... your mind!

That man, with the man in the mirror
That man
I'm asking him to change his ways
You know...
No message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make the change

I'm gonna make a change, it's gonna feel real good!
Just lift yourself, you've got to stop it,
No message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make the change
