Fran is gossiping with Val about Niles and C.C.'s affair. She tells Val that Niles had to go to London for a family reunion and C.C. went with him to the airport to pick up some duty free "L'air du Temps."

A moment later, Michael is telling Maggie that he got a modeling job in Japan and he has to leave in five days.
Michael: So Maggie, will you marry me?
Fran: Yes!   Max: No!

Fran: Miss Babcock, did Niles get off okay?
C.C.: Yes.

Maggie: Excuse me, but this is a very important moment in my life, could we have some privacy?
Max: No!   Fran: Yes.
Maggie: Fine. I love you Michael and I would love to marry you.

Fran is thrilled, but Maxwell thinks Maggie is entirely too young to consider getting married. However, he is going against the tide of the female half of the family and has a hard time getting his point across. They all exit, Max still objecting.

Everyone piles in Val's car on the way to Queens with the plan-making in full swing, despite Maxwell's misgivings.
Max: Now I've had enough. I am the head of this household and as such I have a say in the future of my eldest daughter. This will not be rushed into, there will be no wedding, end of discussion.

Picking out a dress at Danny's Parisian Brides for Less, Maggie is worried about her father's reaction. Fran reassures her it will be okay.
Mags: Fran what are we gonna do about Daddy? He was so upset when Val dropped him off at the theater.
Fran: Oh sweetie, it's been my experience with your father that he just needs time to think about it, and then he changes his mind. Fathers are always devastated when their little girls get married.

Later that day, Fran joins Maxwell on the stoop.
Max: It just doesn't seem right to me. She's not ready.
Fran: Well it seems right to her and if you would stop yelling at her and try listening to her, I think that you would know what it feels like.

When Maggie comes out, Daddy is ready to listen.
Maggie: But I don't think you really understand how Michael and I feel about each other.

Max: You're really in love aren't you?
Maggie: So much. You know I love you too Daddy.
Max: And I love you sweetheart. And you're going to make a beautiful bride.

Five days later, it's almost time for the wedding. Yetta lets it slip to CC that everyone knows about her "activities."
Yetta: Frannie and her husband walked in on them when they were doing the horizontal hora.
C.C.: Where? Kitchen, closet, stairway, limo? Walmart?

Michael arrives for the ceremony and Fran is looking at the place cards. She discovers one that reads "Mr. and Mrs. James Brolin."
Fran: Oh my God, my daughter is marrying a boy who's cousin is married to Barbra.

At the hospital, it turns out to have been a false alarm, but they want her to stay for observation anyway. Maxwell reassures her that the guests are enjoying the dinner, Barbra is entertaining the crowd with a number or two, and that they will postpone the wedding till tomorrow.

However, just at that moment, she goes into labor and Maxwell hustles her out of the house to the hospital.

As soon as the doctor is gone, Fran tries to convince Max that they should make a break for it.

But Max won't let her, insisting she stay in bed. She agrees, reluctantly.
Fran: I'm sorry, I know I'm acting childish. I'll spend the night here like they want me to.

Since neither of them have eaten since that morning, Maxwell goes out to get them Chinese. As soon as he is gone, she is outta there, making tracks for home and Barbra.

When she gets there though, the house is empty.
Fran: Barbra?? Barbra can you hear me?
The phone rings, it's Max.
Fran: Are you mad at me because I ran out?

Max: Not half as mad as your going to be with yourself. Because when I called home I arranged a little surprise for you.

The next day, Maggie is married.

The mother and father of the bride.

Evergreen
(Words by Paul Williams; Music by Barbra Streisand)

Love, soft as an easy chair
Love, fresh as the morning air
One love that is shared by two
I have found with you.

Like a rose under the April snow
I was always certain love would grow
Love, ageless and evergreen
Seldom seen by two.

You and I will make each night a first
Every day a beginning
Spirits rise and their dance is unrehearsed
They warm and excite us
'Cause we have the brightest love
Two lights that shine as one
Morning glory and the midnight sun.

Time won't let us sail above
Time won't change the meaning of
one love,
Ageless and ever,
Evergreen.
