Over breakfast, the family discusses that Maggie is going to her first Sweet Sixteen party and Fran is taking her to get her hair done for the occasion.

Later that morning, Maxwell and C.C. are holding auditions at the the house for their latest show and Mary Ruth is one of the aspiring show girls.

The audition doesn't go well, however, and she is desperate for a job, any job. Fran takes her with them to Maggie's hair appointment because she heard the salon was hiring.

Down at the salon, Sylvia and Yetta enjoy Mr. Anthony's attentions.

Mary Ruth gets the shampoo girl job instead of Sylvia, who had also applied.

Mr. Anthony's son makes friends with Mary Ruth. She finds out that he has been missing his mother and tries to get Mr. Anthony to be more understanding.

Mr. Sheffield objects to the wig that Fran let Maggie get for the party because it makes her look too old.
Max: Come on Margaret, no boy in his right mind would be attracted to that ridiculous wig.

Max: Oh Miss Fine..... look at you!!
But when Fran wears it, it is a different story, and they go out for ice cream and a movie!

[This episode was the pilot for a spin off series that was not bought.]

(Gerome Ragni and James Rado)

Gimme head with hair
Long beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming,
Streaming, flaxen, waxen

Give me down to there hair
Shoulder length or longer
Here baby, there mama
Everywhere daddy daddy

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair

Let it fly in the breeze
And get caught in the trees
Give a home to the fleas in my hair
A home for fleas
A hive for bees
A nest for birds
There ain't no words
For the beauty, the splendor, the wonder
Of my...

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair

I want it long, straight, curly, fuzzy
Snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty
Oily, greasy, fleecy
Shining, gleaming, streaming
Flaxen, waxen
Knotted, polka-dotted
Twisted, beaded, braided
Powdered, flowered, and confettied
Bangled, tangled, spangled, and spaghettied!
